Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked a. B. C. and D. You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneAdam Smith, writing in the 1770s, was the first person to see the importance of the division of labor and to explain part of its advantages. He gives as an example the process by which pins were made in England.“One man draws out the wire, another strengthens it, a third cuts it, a fourth points it, a fifth grinds it at the top to prepare it to receive the head. To make the head requires two or three different operations. To put it on is a separate operation, to polish the pins is another. It is even a trade by itself to put them into the paper. And the important business of making pins is, in this manner, divided into about eighteen operations, which in some factories are all performed by different people, though in others the same man will sometimes perform two or three of them. Ten men, Smith said, in this way, turned out twelve pounds of pins a day or about 4,800 pins apiece. But if all of them had worked separately and independently without division of labour, they certainly could not each of them have made twenty pins in a day and perhaps not even one. There can be no doubt that division of labour, provided that it is not taken too far, is an efficient way of organizing work. Fewer people can make more pins. Adam Smith saw this but he also took it for granted that division of labour is in itself responsible for economic growth and development and that it accounts for the difference between expanding economies and those that stand still. But division of labour adds nothing new; it only enables people to produce more f what they already have.1. According to the passage, Adam Smith was the first person to ________.A. take advantage of the division of labourB. introduce the division of labour into EnglandC. understand the effects of the division of labourD. explain the causes of the division of labour2. A man in a Paris hospital who needs blood, a woman in Mexico who was injured in an earthquake, and family in India that lost their home in a storm may all be aided by the Red Cross. The Red Cross exists in almost every country around the globe. The world Red Cross organizations are sometimes called the Red Crescent, the Red Mogen David, the Sun, and the Red Lion. All of these agencies share a common goal of trying to help people in need. The idea of forming an organization to help the sick and wounded during a war started with Jean Henri Dunant. In 1859, he observed how people were suffering on a battlefield in Italy. He wanted to help all the wounded people regardless of which side they were fighting for. The most important result of his work was an international treaty called the Geneva Convention. It protects prisoners of war, the sick and wounded, and other citizens during a war.The American Red Cross was set up by Clara Barton in 1881. Mogen DavidPassage ThreeFootball is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to one of the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other. To a stranger one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams, he has pictures of them and knows the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you whom he expects will win such and such a match and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age. Most schools in England take football seriously much more seriously than nearly allEuropean schools, where lessons are all important, and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy‟s mind with facts in the character is by means of games, especially team games, instead of working for himself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its pupils. Football is a good team game, it is good both for the body and the mind. That is why it is very school‟s game in England.11. At football matches, people often _______ one team or the other by shouting.A. watchB. win overC. laugh atD. support12. In England school boys seem ________ football games.A. to know a great deal aboutB. not to know much aboutC. to know a little aboutD. to know nothing about13. Football games are very popular among _____________.A. all peopleB. adultsC. boys and girlsD. boys onlyPassage FourInsects‟ lives are very short and they have many enemies, but they must survive long enough to breed and perpetuate their kind. The less insect like they look, the better their chance of survival. To look “inedible” by resembling or imitating plants or objects that hold no interest or their enemies is a deception widely practiced by insects. Mammals rarely use this type of camouflage, but many fish and invertebrates do.The stick caterpillar is well named. It is hardly distinguishable from a brown or green twig. This caterpillar is quite common and can be found almost anywhere in North America. It is also called “measuring worm” or “inchworm”. It walks by arching its body, then stretching out and grasping the branch with its front feet, then looping its body again to bring the hind feet forward. When danger threatens, the stick caterpillar stretches its body away from the branch at an angle and remains rigid and still, like a twig, until the danger has passed.Walking sticks, or stick insects, do not have to assume a rigid, twig like pose to find protection; they look like inedible twigs in any position. There are many kinds of walking sticks, ranging in size from the few inches of the North American variety to some tropical species that may be over a foot long. When at rest their front legs are stretched out, heightening their camouflage. Some 9f the tropical species are adorned with spines or ridges, imitating the thorny bushes or trees in wh9ch they live.。

It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can be missed out when the state system is obviously socomplete. It is obvious, for instance, that many children from less wealthy homes reach university or do well in other ways.Unfortunately we now have plenty of proofs that many children of every level of ability do much less well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the intelligence of all male 18 – to – 20 – year –olds. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two highest ability groups had left school at 15.It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to univer Omsity is almost the same now as it was in 1939. One study of 5,000 children from birth to 21 years old shows that up to half the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but far more boys than girls stay in education after 16.It is clear from this and many other proofs that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes—money, social respectability, and interesting jobs—which higher education gives. It is clear too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social background. Their parents often need the extra money another money-earner would bring in; they don‘t value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, ―it‘s up to you‖.16.It is hoped that ROSLA will give all children .A.a more enjoyable time at school B.the same chances in societyC.the right to a better school D.higher scores in intelligence tests 17.People would like to think that .A.equal numbers of poor and wealthy children reach universityB.those with the least money get the best educationC.intelligent children are always selected by the systemD.only really clever children do well18.Working class children are thought to be at a disadvantage because . A.many of the clever ones leave school earlyB.fewer go to university than ever beforeC.more than half leave school when they are 16D.fewer boys than girls stay at school after 1619.Many children leave school early because .A.their social background makes them unhappyB.they have to give something to their family‘s incomeC.their school is a dull and unhappy placeD.their parents don‘t allow them to make their own decisions20.This article shows that equal opportunity in education .A.is a thing of the past B.has not yet been achievedC.is there for those who deserve it D.has greatly improved our society Key:BCABBQuestions 26—30 are based on the following passageYou Are What You GiveWhat you give your relatives and friends can help you know yourself better. Also, what they give you can tell you something about their personality. Most gift-giving (and getting) shows nothing more than the spirit of love and friendship. But it is possible to form some associations between the kinds of things brought and the people who buy them. Here is a guide to who gives what ─and why.The clothes you wear tell something about your personality. They tell the world not only how you want to be seen but how you see yourself as well. When someone gives you something to wear that agrees with your self-image, they‘re saying, ―I agre e with you. I like you the way you are.‖ Such a gift should be taken as a form of compliment (赞美). On the other hand, a gift of clothing that doesn‘t match your personality could be an insult (侮辱) to your character.Making something by hand has become the exception in many countries today. If you receive a homemade gift, you‘re lucky. It may not be made perfectly, but it will show a certain quality of love. They‘ve given time and emotion, two important characteristics of being creative.A person who thinks of food when thinking of gift is good example of what human warmth means. If you happen to receive a large, heavy book, its giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they actually are. Yet surprisingly, love has been the subject of less scientific research than other emotions, such as anger and fear. The reason for this may be twofold. First, love is a very complex emotion, difficult to describe and measure. Secondly, unlike many radical emotions, radical love is generally not a problem; thus less medical attention has been paid to it.What is love? This is a complex question and requires a complex answer. Love is a strong, positive attraction and feeling for another person or thing. But it is more than this. It also involves feelings of caring, protection, excitement, and tenderness. When two people are in love they feel drawn to one another, they greatly enjoy each other's company, and they may be sexually attracted to one another.Sometimes it is easier to think in terms of different kinds of love: romantic love, brotherly love, and so forth. Though they are different in some respects, they share one important characteristic: a strong positive feeling toward another. Our feelings toward other people are often complex. We may love someone and, at the same time, be angry with him. Or we may love someone, even though we are jealous of him. We might even love someone and, at the same time, hate him for the same precise reason.Hate is a strong negative emotion toward someone, and is due to anger, jealousy, or some other factors. Like love, hate can be a very strong emotion. It can also be very dangerous. The question is often asked, "Is it bad to hate?" The best answer is probably "Sometimes yes and sometimes no." Usually hate does not help us; it makes us feel unhappy and makes us do things that may hurt others. However, sometimes it may be necessary to hate and hurt someone in order to protect loved ones.36. We might need hate, because it can help us ________.A. be strongB. protect ourselvesC. defend othersD. understand love for others37. Which characteristic is shared by different kinds of love?A strong respectful feeling toward another.A strong negative emotion toward someone.A strong jealous feeling toward someone.A strong positive feeling toward another.38. Why doesn't scientific research pay attention to love?A. Because love is very rare.B. Because love is very complex.C. Because radical love is dangerous.D. Because love is not important.39. According to the passage, hate is caused by ________.A. fear, danger and hurtB. caring, protection, excitement and tendernessC. anger, jealousy or some other factorsD. complex, strong positive emotions40. Love is a feeling that is the opposite of ________.A. angerB. hateC. fearD. jealousyKey: CABCBPart V.

其它0-1题:包括助动词(如强调谓语动词的do,does,did ;构成部分倒装的do,does,did ;构成一般疑问句的do,does,did ),构成强调结构的it 或that ,连接性副词(before,ago,however,anyway ...)

Thus the triumph of English not only destroys the tongues of others; it also isolates native English-speakers from the literature, history and ideas of other peoples. Paraphrase: Therefore, the success of English not only defeats other languages, but separates native English speakers from the literature, history and ideas of other ethnic groups.Unit21. Sometimes it seems as if a tidal wave of the worst Western culture is creeping across the globe like a giant strawberry milkshake oozing over the planet, with a flavor that is distinctly sweet, sickly and manifestly homogenousParaphrase: Sometimes the Western culture seems to permeate the whole world like spilt milkshake, with a strong smell, sweet but obviously devoid of diversity.2. Production and consumption of cultural goods and services have become commodities, along with the essentials of social life (marriage and family life, religion, work and leisure), that are the crucibles of cultural creation.Paraphrase: Cultural creation is facing great challenge posed by the commercialization of culture.3. Obviously, it would be an excessive form of cultural fundamentalism to suggest that Africans should try to keep everything exactly as it is, rather than allowing culture to develop. Paraphrase: Obviously, it would be too culturally radical to suggest that Africans should conduct rigid adherence to their current life and refuse to allow culture to develop.4. Justified initially as a civilizing mission and subsequently dubbed modernization, in practice it was wholesale Westernization with very little room for any viable middle ground.Paraphrase: In the beginning it justified itself as a civilizing mission and later on it honored itself as modernization. However, in fact it was a process of extensive and complete Westernization which left other countries no other choice.5. Such a radical undermining of people's existing values and cultures has a corrosive impact on their sense of who they are, what they want and what they respect.Paraphrase: The severe damage of people's existing values and cultures has a destructive effect. It makes those people confused about who they are, what they want and what they respect.6. One major reason is the structural change in the world economy: globalization and the flood of goods dumped in poor countries that are marketed by mass seductive advertising which is blatantly superficial but nonetheless successful in creating fresh desires in peoples of traditional societies. Paraphrase: One major reason of this fast and large-scale westernization is the change of overall structure in the world economy. Because of globalization, western countries use marketing strategies such as advertising to create fresh desires in consumers from less developed countries and get rid of products by selling them at a low price.7. However, there is genuine cause for concern about the rate at which cultures (African andnon-African) are being undermined in a world that is bound together by ever-stronger economic ties.Paraphrase: However, people indeed have a reason to worry that African and non-African cultures are gradually encroached by western culture due to the ever-growing strong interdependence of trade and business among countries.8. More importantly, colonialism paved the way for today's cultural globalization by leaving the colonized in a state of cultural disorientation and consequently vulnerable to continuing cultural invasion.Paraphrase: More importantly, colonialism provided the necessary condition for today's cultural globalization since it left the colonized countries unable to recognize its own cultural heritage. As a result, these countries are easily susceptible to long-lasting cultural invasion.Unit31.The task of a university is to weld together imagination and experience. Paraphrase: A university should aim at joining or integrating imagination and experience of the teachers and students into a single, meaningful whole.2. We need not flinch from the assertion that the main function of such a school is to produce men with a greater zest for business.Paraphrase: There is no shame in claiming/declaring that the function of such a school is to produce business people with great enthusiasm.3. It requires an imaginative grasp of the interlocking interests of great organizations, and of the reactions of the whole complex to any change in one of its elements. Paraphrase: Today in order to run a business successfully, one has to develop a good understanding of the adaptations made by the large corporation as a whole to meet the new conditions in one of its branches.4. It requires that discipline of character which can say "yes" and "no" to other men, not by reason of blind obstinacy, but with firmness derived from a conscious evaluation of relevant alternatives.Paraphrase: There is a need for character training so that when they make decisions, they have determination and strong belief which come from a sober consideration of related choices and possibilities, and they are not giving consent or negation simply out of unreasonable stubbornness.5. The conduct of business now requires intellectual imagination of the same type as that which in former times has mainly passed into those other occupations Paraphrase: The management of a modern business demands its employees to acquire the capacity to apply their knowledge imaginatively, which used to be the ability cultivated in other professions.6. There is one great difficulty which hampers all the higher types of human endeavor. Paraphrase: One great difficulty can restrict human beings from making progress, or achievements.7. There can be no criticism of the custom, but there may be an unfortunate effect — prolonged routine work dulls the imagination.Paraphrase: The continuing usual or normal way of working in a corporation tends to blunt, or suffocate the imaginative power / make the imagination less sharp and clear.Unit41. The modern variation reads: "Man is born free and is everywhere in chain stores," and perfectly sums up the negative light in which supermarkets are seen by the community, environmental and "small is beautiful" campsParaphrase: The modified sentence in modern times describes perfectly the negative attitude towards supermarkets held by the public, environmentalists and those who advocate "small is beautiful".2. And while supermarkets have been accused by the Competition Commission of loss-leading and squeezing suppliers, such behaviour is bullish rather than illegal Paraphrase: The Competition Commission accused supermarkets of adopting low pricing to gain competitive edge and minimizing profits of suppliers, but these strategies are boosting their own profit and are not illegal competition means.3. The key to delivering both low prices and high quality as well as thriving and sustainable communities is to ensure that retail activity is present in all communities of any size that want it, and for it to be present in sufficient numbers for there to be a degree of competition.Paraphrase: In order to make sure goods are of high quality and are sold at low prices, and in order to maintain a well-developed and sustainable community, the important element is to provide retail services to all the communities in need, whether large or small. To realize this, a sufficient number of retail shops should be open so that there is some competition.4. In poor areas, environmental improvements and security measures can help level the playing field with wealthier areas, while avoiding direct subsidy to firms. Paraphrase: In poor areas, there are measures to improve their environment and security so that they are more or less the same as the wealthier areas to attract customers. However, the shops do not receive any fund to aid their competition with those in wealthier neighbourhoods.5. In the poorest areas, it may not be that people don't value having a local shop, but rather that they simply cannot afford to ignore the lower prices available through a short bus ride to a supermarket.Paraphrase: In the poorest areas, people prefer supermarket to local shop not because they don't value having a local shop, but because their financial situation makes them choose the lower prices available through a short bus ride to a supermarket.6. Tesco is promising bespoke shop fronts for new Express convenience stores and to step up its efforts to consult communities about new outlets.Paraphrase: Tesco is promising bespoke shop fronts for new Express convenience stores and to take more efforts to consult communities about new outlets.Unit51. The Renaissance "... went from Columbus to Copernicus, from Copernicus to Galileo, from the discovery of the earth to that of the heavens. Man re-found himself", according to Michelet. Paraphrase: According to Michelet, the Renaissance went from the European exploration into the unknown world — the American Continent, Africa, and Asia — to the scientific finding that the earth was not the center of the world.2. For Burckhardt, the Renaissance was a specifically Italian phenomenon, nurtured in thecity-states of the 15th century, where the artistic talents of the likes of Leonardo, Botticelli, Mantegna and Brunelleschi flourished.Paraphrase: For Burckhardt, the Renaissance was a historical event occurred in Italy in particular, during which many talented people such as Leonardo, Botticelli, Mantegna and Brunelleschi became successful.3. Until very recently, this invention of the European Renaissance has remained a powerful and seductive myth, which has ignored much of what was truly revolutionary about this extraordinary period in European history.Paraphrase: Till now, the idea that the European Renaissance was mostly a "rebirth" of the classical Greek and Roman values of literary purity and aesthetic beauty, remained so influential and attractive that people have long taken it for granted, ignoring that it was actually trade and finance that brought the great revolution in this extraordinary period in European history.4. What underpinned all the great artistic, literary and architectural achievements that we now see as quintessentially "Renaissance" was an equally momentous revolution in trade and finance. Paraphrase: The commercial and financial developments during the Renaissance laid the foundation for the cultural accomplishments in this period and they have brought about as equally significant changes to the European society as the arts did.5. Only now, in our more complex and interdependent global world, has it become possible to piece together a much more complex and dynamic picture of what really drove the cultural accomplishments of this remarkable period.Paraphrase: As the contemporary world becomes more globalized and complex, it is now possible to form a comprehensive and vivid view of the driving force of the cultural developments during the Renaissance.6. Neither of these writers explored how trade, finance, science and exchange with other cultures decisively shaped what they saw as the cultural flowering of the European Renaissance. Paraphrase: Both of these writers neglected the fact that trade, finance, science and exchange with other cultures had significantly influenced the cultural development of the European Renaissance.7. The result of this increasingly international trade revolutionised taste in Europe. Paraphrase: The result of this increasingly international trade caused fundamental changes in the cultural style in Europe.8. What we're left with is a vision of the Renaissance as a much dirtier, more worldly place than Michelet and Burckhardt believed, but this only adds to its singular importance in the history of western cultural life.Paraphrase: Quite different from what Michelet and Burckhardt believed, we are now presented with a more materialistic, less idealized vision of the Renaissance, but this realization makes it all the more important in the western cultural history.Unit81. Ticket scalping has been very good to Kevin Thomas, and he makes no apologies. Paraphrase: He considers scalping a decent way to make a living, so there is no need to feel guilty about selling at higher prices.2. Undercover officers are enforcing new restrictions on reselling tickets at marked-up prices, and the attorneys general of the two states are pressing well-publicized cases against more than a dozen ticket brokers.Paraphrase: Police in plain clothes are now implementing the new rules to restrict selling tickets at higher prices than the face value. The court of the two states, New York (where New York City is located) and New Jersey, are undergoing legal proceedings against more than 12 ticket brokers. The cases are much reported by the media.3. It's always good politics to pose as the defender of the poor by declaring high prices illegal.Paraphrase: It is always a wise political strategy to declare selling at higher prices illegal with the excuse of defending the poor people.4. But the owners have profited by finding a new clientele for tickets that would have gone unsold, an illustration of the free-market tenet that both buyers and sellers ultimately benefit when price is adjusted to meet demand.Paraphrase: The box-office owners benefited from the suggestion by Dr. Baumol because those tickets won't get stuck in their hands. This is a good example to show the buyers and sellers are able to adjust their preferences so that each will satisfy their own needs.5. The restrictions, which were strengthened last year, have sent most scalpers to two refuges: the black market and the suburbs beyond the state line.Paraphrase: The regulation implemented last year caused most scalpers to seek two ways to secure their profit: one is to sell tickets in the black market; the other is to sell them outside the state border where scalping is not prohibited.6. And as much as scalpers would like to inflate prices, only a limited number of people are willing to pay $100 a ticket.Paraphrase: Even though the scalpers would like to raise the prices, not many people are ready to pay as much as $100 for a ticket.Unit61. We also know that otherwise beneficial technologies can open up troubling ethical questions. Paraphrase: Certain uses of technologies may give rise to ethical questions that causes people a lot of worries, even though the technologies can benefit humanities in many other aspects.2. If the debasement of the arts and sciences to purposes of wickedness, luxury, and the like, be made a ground of objection, … let no one be moved thereby, for the same may be said of all earthly goods; of wit, courage, strength, beauty, wealth, light itself and the rest.Paraphrase: If it is considered an argument against their further development that the arts and sciences may be used for purposes of wickedness, luxury as well as some other similarly bad intentions, then progress should not be pursued in any other good and valuable things on the earth either, including wit, courage, strength, beauty, wealth, and even light itself, because any of them can be reduced to evil purposes, just as the arts and sciences do.3. Science is inherently progressive, and so gives us the sense that all other means of understanding must strive to catch up.Paraphrase: Science, by nature, moves forward continuously, that is, it always knows more today than yesterday. This fact makes people believe that other means of understanding, such as philosophy and ethics, etc. should make every effort to progress in the same way and at the same pace so as to meet the ever developing need of science.4. The ethical framework we need to deal with the challenges (and to make the most of the promise) of science and technology need not be developed in light of the latest scientific journal article. Paraphrase: In developing the particular system of moral principles essential for dealing with the challenges of science and technology (and gaining the maximum potential benefit of them), we need not take into consideration the latest developments in science, which are reflected in articles published in the recent issues of scientific journals.5. Those other sources serve to ground our moral judgment, while science avoids or flattens moral questions …Paraphrase: The array of non-scientific wisdom (including philosophy, ethics and religion) provides a basis on which we judge whether a behavior is morally correct or not; science, in contrast, avoids questions related to moral issues or makes them seem less important…6. …we might describe the modern ascendancy of the scientific worldview as morally neutralizing, crowding out our means of moral reasoning and sources of moral authority …Paraphrase: The growing power of scientific worldview in modern society might be considered as replacing the influence of non-scientific wisdom on moral issues, by dominating our thoughts to the exclusion of traditional ways of moral reasoning and other modes of thinking that should be of supreme importance in moral judgments.7. …we allude to the "Brave New World" as shorthand for the inhuman technological dystopia …Paraphrase: We use "Brave New World" as a quick and simple way to indirectly refer to a futuristic world resulting from misapplications of technologies, in which the conditions of life are miserable.Unit11. 近年来,人们用精确的经济计量技术来计算需求弹性。

Art also allows an artist to leave a permanent(永久的) mark on time. A painting allows the artist to keep a moment that has long passed. When did art begin? Researchers have been working for many years to find the answer. Some have found drawings on rocks in South Africa that are 75,000 years old. They believe that these drawings are art. Other experts don't think that this finding is that impressive. They argue that theimages on the rocks don't show any meaningful message. They suggest that we look to walls, specifically cave walls, to find the origin of art. Some paintings from nearly 40,000 years ago have been found in caves in Europe and Asia. When cave art was first studied in Spain in 1880, researchers felt that it was the achievement of the earliest humans. They moved from Africa to Europe. In the 1950s, a 39,900yearold handprint was discovered on the wall of the Sulawesi cave in Indonesia. When researchers found these cave paintings, they noticed similarities(相似物) to those found in Europe. Other parents overindulge because they want their children to have everything they had while growing up, along with those things the parents yearned for but didn’t get. You may notice several superficial differences such as music, food, and clothing, and the fresh appeal of the new experience keeps you feeling interested and positive. When you stay in a newenvironment for a while, you move to stage two-the crisis stage-in which the shine wears off and day-to-day realities sink in. In relationship, you notice annoying habits; in a new country, you find barriers to establishing connections or to learning the language beyond a few polite phrases. If you stick with the experience and try to deal with it realistically, you will probably move to the third phase: recovery. In recovery, you learn the systems, procedures, language or nonverbal behaviors of the new environment so that you can cope with it on the basis of some mastery, competence, and comfort. Finally, when you feel that you function well and almost automatically in the new culture, you will move to the fourth phase: adjustment.L8 The Model Millionaire(II)Retell the story The Model Millionaire in about 150 words, concluding your retelling with a one-sentence comment.Hughie Erskine was a charming young man who was in love with a nice girl called Laura Merton. auras father made it clear to Hughie that he would not marry his daughter to him until Hughie had ten thousand pounds. One day, Hughie went to see his artist friend Alan Trevor in his studio. Then, she wrote the book Silent Spring to sound a startling warming to mankind and the book showed quite clearly that man was endangering himself and everything else on this planet by his indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides.
