A.They make peoplerun over the past days.B.They are the best books to be read before people sleep.C.They are extremely popular with young people.D.They make people feel relaxed and happy.25.What can we know from the text?A.Oor Wullie an d The Broons are the author’s favorite books.B.A comfortable blanket makes people go to sleep easily.C.The author sometimes reads something about inspiration.D.Reading something stimulating at night helps get a peaceful sleep.26.What is Paragraph 6 mainly about? A.What material brings us laughter. B.How laughter affects our health. C.What benefits laughter brings to us. D.Why laughter is good for us.27.What’s the main purpose of the text?A.To show the importance of reading before sleeping.B.To prove the importance of a good mood before sleeping.C.To tell us how to make ourselves stay relaxed before sleeping.D.To explain how to choose a book worthy to be read before sleeping.CSometimes people call each other “scared-cat”.But have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense and there are changes in the chemicals in itsbloodstream.Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will protect itself,or it will run away as fast as it can.Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry or scared by other feelings, our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We,too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face.If we give way to our feelings and let them take over,we can get into trouble.Have you ever said something in anger or hit somebody and regretted it later?Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely,or said you were inlove, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut?It isn’t always clever to express your feelings freely.Does this mean that it’s smarter to always hide our feelings? No!If you keep feelings of anger or sadnesshidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense.Physical illness can develop, and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actually be bad for your health. It isn’t good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don’t just go away. It’s as if you bought some bananas and put them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you’d smell them. And if you opened thecupboard, chances are th at you’d see little fruit flies flying all over them. They are bad.You can try to treat feelings as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you’ll have to deal with them, just like those bananas. 28.When people and animals are aroused by fear, . A.they feel veryregretful immediatelyB.their muscles get neither tense nor relaxedC.their hearts beat either faster or slowerD.they may get ready to attack or run away29.Why do human beings get into trouble according to the passage? A.They are usually not as alert as animals.B.They sometimes can’t control their feelings.C.They always do something wrong to other people.D.They don’t pay attention to the ir physical changes.30.What can we infer from the passage?A.Holding in your feelings may lead to unpleasant results.B.Bananas stay fresh longer when they are in a cupboard.C.Feelings will gradually disappear when you hold them in.D.It’s good for y our health to keep pleasant feelings inside. 31.What is the purpose of this passage?A.To tell us that people’s feelings are like bananas in a cupboard.B.To give us some advice on how to express our feelings.C.To help us deal with feelings in a wise and proper way.D.To prove that it isn’t always wise to express our feelings freely.DSome people are so rude!Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you”?Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you?Who asks for a fact easily found on Google?Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication. In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello.E-mail,too,is slower than a text.Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect. My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listenedto.Exasperated,he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls.“Why are you leaving him voice mail?” my sister asked.“Just text him.”In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about:the weather forecast,a business’s phone number,or directions to a house,a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.How to handle these differing standards?Easy.Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message.Others, likeme, want no reply. The anthropologist (人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learnt from the old.But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here’s hoping that politeness never goes out o f fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do.32.What does the underlined word “Exasperated” mean in the fifth paragraph? A.Worried. B.Surprised. C.Annoyed. D.Tired. 33.Why didn’t the writer reply to his father? A.He liked text messages better.B.He enjoyed checking his voice mail.C.He didn’t receive any voice mail messages.D.He didn’t want to talk with his father.34.Which of the following does the writer agree to?A.People needn’t learn from one another in traditional so cieties.B.Dealing with voice mail should vary with each individual.C.People needn’t turn to Google for help when in trouble.D.Declaring who you are or saying hello in texts is necessary. 35.What’s the best title of this passage?A.Nowadays:what should we do with text messages?B.Nowadays:do you like leaving others a voice message?C.Nowadays:what means should we use in communication?D.Nowadays:do you need a thank-you message? 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Dancing changes the way we feel and think, and increases self-worth.As a dance psychologist and teacher, I have witnessed the ways dancing has changed the lives of hundreds of people. Then I set up the Dance Psychology Lab so that I could combine my knowledge in psychology with dance, using science to study the relationship between movement and the brain. What I found was extraordinary: people with Parkinson's disease(帕金森病)and dementia(痴呆)getting a new chance to live longer;an increase in the self-worth of teenagers;reductions in sadness and anxiety in adults;increases in social bonding between people;and fundamental changes in the way people think and solve problems. All because of dancing.Dancing stimulates the link between the body and the brain. The emotional high we get from dancing is due to dopamine(多巴胺).This brain chemical plays a role in how we feel, and low levels are associated with feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, pain and mood swings. Dancing is a great way to overcome these negative feelings because the exercise and our emotional responsesto the music we're hearing can increase the release of dopamine in different parts of the brain. As dopamine levels go up, we can shake off some of those negative feelings and float into an excited state.Scientists suggest that the best time to learn a dance routine is before you go to sleep. This is because the brain builds new knowledge structures while we sleep, and it is these structures thatstrengthen our ability to learn and remember information. In our lab experiments, we found that people who did 20 minutes of improvised(即兴的)dancing became more creative when answering creative-thinking tasks. For example, before dancing, participants could generate about four or five alternative uses for a common object such as a brick or a newspaper, but after dancing they could generate seven or eight.4.Why does the author build the Dance Psychology Lab?A.To change how people think and feel. B.To help people increase their self-worth. C.To find out different social relationships. A storm was coming, and they were anxious to get off the mountain. When they approached a rocky drop of a couple of feet, Wedelstedt decided to jump over it. She landed on her left leg. Then she heard the snap (咔嚓声).Every step after that was great pain. Before long, she had to stop. As one friend ran down to get help, a number of other hikers, all strangers, attempted to help Wedelstedt down the narrow path by walking on either side of her to support her weight, but that proved slow and dangerous. Finally, one hiker, Matt, asked her, “How do you feel about a fireman’s carry?” Before she knew it, he had lifted her over his shoulder. “Now, I’m not tiny,” says We delstedt, a former college basketball star. Matt clearly couldn’t carry her all the way down by himself. So six hikers and one of her friends took turns carrying her while she tried to make light of a difficult situation. Three hours and two rock-strewn (遍布) miles later, this human conveyor belt finally met the doctors, who took Wedelstedt to the hospital. She has mostly recovered from her hike, but Wedelstedt knows she’ll never shake one thing from that d ay: the memory of the band of strangers who came to her rescue. “I am still in awe.” says Wedelstedt.8.What happened to Wedelstedt while climbing down the mountain?A.She was caught in a heavy storm. I know I lack the necessary DIY skills, but luckily there are numerous books and online videos that will hopefully give me the information I need. Publications that help us to help ourselves are nothing new, but the range of them is increasing with advice being given far beyond practical tasks around the house.Bookshops these days are full of titles which claim to boost your self-confidence, your wealth, your love life or your career. Some claim to improve your life within seven days! It's big business and it's thought that the self-help industry is worth $10bn in the US alone. The first self-help book called 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' was published in 1936, and has since sold 30 million copies and is still popular now. It includes guidance on how to make people like you and how to make your life happier. It might seem strange to think that we need a book to tell us how to live our lives but self-help books remain a go to remedy for those of us looking for enlightenment. There are, of course, trends in what we need help with. Emma Marshall, who works at British bookshop Waterstones, says “at the moment we're in the tidying up, getting rid of things trend... I think the trend right now is about slowing down in your life." It seems there is always something we need help with, and reading about it can be very therapeutic - it makes us feel good, even if we don't do anything about it.Of course, the internet has become the place to go to for salvation. We've got used to searching for solutions online, and now these solutions even include howto fix or improve our lives. Interestingly, psychologist Caroline Beaton, says people called 'millennials' are self-critical — they are aware of their own faults — which also means they're more likely to spend time and money on self-help. There's also a theory that the self-help industry does well during a recession — people are perhaps even more likely to reach for self-help to improve their situation.Whatever the reason for the continued interest in self-help, it's good to know help is at hand when we need it. The alternative to finding a happier life is just to come to terms with yourself as you are -I know, I read about it in a book! Do you believe in self-help books?4. Where else can you get self-help advice apart from books?A.From teachersB.From friendsC.From the InternetD.From parents5.What do you know about self-books?A.They may offer you some keys to success.B.They hasn't gained great popularity.C.All of us enjoy them very much.D.They can certainly improve your life within seven days.6. Why do millennials spend more money on self-help books according to Caroline Beaton?A.They are stuck in a recession.B.They realize they are not perfect.C.They are more likely to have access to books.D.They haven't got used to searching for solutions online.7. What can we infer from the passage?A.People don't have interest in self-help books.B.Accepting yourself as you are makes you happier.C.The self-help industry makes little difference during a recession.D.The current trend in self-help books is about rushing around and taking things easier.CIt used to be mostly the military that used small, unpiloted aircraft, called “drones”. The little planes were very costly. But as they hav e dropped in price more people have begun to use them. Rescue workers and farmers are among the new users. The fast rate of the development of computer technology, image sensing devices, satellite navigation (卫星导航) and smartphones has led to lower-priced drones. Researchers and developers have learned how to build smaller and less-costly drones. Moviemakers are using drones to film from the sky. Historians use them when they explore ancient buildings. Rescue workers use them to look for people. And now farmers are using them to monitor their crops.Romain Faroux is a French businessman who starts companies. His father was a farmer. He believed drones could help farmers. He helped create a company that developed a small drone that could be controlled by people on the ground. They called it “Agridrone”. It uses a special “optical sensor (光学传感器)” to examine crops. The technology used is similar to that used by smartphones—except it has wings.A computer program directs the drone to fly over the crops. The sensor on the drone records four different-colored “bands”of sunlight that are reflected off the crops.Jean-Baptiste Bruggeman is a farmer. He says the drone flies over his crops at different times of the season. This provides a lot of information about his crops. The drone pictures show him the exact amount of fertilizer the crops need. It also shows exactly where the fertilizer is needed.Romain Faroux says farmers use information collected by the Agridrone to place fertilizer only in areas where it is needed. This saves money and reduces pollution. Before they used the drones, farmers would put the same amount of fertilizer everywhere. Drones also save time because farmers can examine up to three hectare (公顷) in about a minute.8.Why do rescue workers and farmers begin to use drones?A.Drones can monitor their cattle.B.Drones’ prices have dropped.C.Drones can help them get more business.D.Drones’ sizes become smaller.9.What can the drones developed by Romain Farour’s company do?A.Explore ancient buildings.B.Put fertilizer on the crops.C.Help farmers examine their crops.D.Help rescue workers look for people.10.What can the sensor on the drone do?A.Help the sunlight shine on the crops.B.Direct the plane to fly over the crops.C.Examine the different colors of the crops.D.Record the sunlight reflected off the crops.11.According to the text, the use of the drone is __________.A.environment-friendlyB.wastefulC.costlyD.safeDScientists often compare coral reefs(珊瑚礁) to underwater rainforests, yet unlike the leafy plant base of a forest, corals are animals. The soft creatures are naturally half-transparent and get their brilliant color from algae(藻类) living inside them. When corals experience stress from hot temperatures or pollution, they halt the interdependent relationship with algae, typically pushing them out and turning white. Corals are still alive when they are white, but they're at risk and many eventually die, turning dark brown.Scientists around the world are looking for means to protect and maybe increase corals. One common option is to create more protected areas —essentially national parks in the ocean. Beyond nature preserves, some conservationists are looking to more hands-on methods. One research center in the Florida Keys is exploring a form of natural selection to keep corals remaining. The reef system in the Keys has been hit hard by climate change and pollution, which is especially tough, because corals there help support fisheries worth $ 100 million every year.To keep the wild ecosystem alive, Erinn Muller, the center's director, and her team are harvesting samples of the corals that survived the environmental stress naturally, keeping them to make them reproduce, and then reattaching them to the reef. They have 46,000 corals on plastic frames under the sea. So far, the center has regrown over 70,000 corals from five different species on damaged reefs. In The Bahamas, Ross Cunning, a research biologist at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, focuses on corals with genes that could make them natural candidates for restoration projects. He published a study of two Bahamian reefs, one that survived an extreme 2015 heat wave, and one that didn't. "We think their ability to deal with these higher temperatures is built into their genes," says Cunning. There's evidence of corals evolving more quickly to resist rapidly warming climate. The big question scientists need investigate, adds Gunning, is how much more heat corals can adapt to.12. What does the underlined word "halt" in the first paragraph mean?A. End.B. Develop.C. Strengthen.D. Weaken.13. What do Muller and her team do to save corals?A. Restore the damaged reefs.B. Grow corals by hand underwater.C. Create more protected areas.D. Move corals to unpolluted areas.14. What do Cunning's words suggest?A. Many corals have been genetically improved.B. Cooling down the waters is key to rescuing corals.C. Reasons for corals surviving heat waves are shocking.D. The highest temperature corals can survive is unclear.15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?A. Relationship between corals and algaeB. Efforts made to save coralsC. Impact of climate warming on coralsD. Survival crisis faced by coral reefs第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Now a new study_________on the effect of this so-called incubation(潜伏期)by using sound cues to focus the sleeping mind on a targeted problem. When humans sleep, parts of the brain replay certain memories, strengthening and transforming them. About a decade ago researchers developed a technique, called targeted memory reactivation(TMR), aimed at further enhancing_________memories: when a sound becomes associated with a memory and is later played during sleep, that memory gets_________. In a study published last November in Psychological Science, scientists tested whether_________the memory of a puzzle during sleep might also improve problem-solving.About 60 participants visited the laboratory before and after a night of_________. First, they_________spatial, verbal and conceptual puzzles, with a distinct music clip repeating in the background for each, until they had worked on six puzzles they could not solve. I confess I hesitated when the editor in chief of The New York Times Magazine told me in late 2014 that I would be editing a new front-of-book column called Letter of Recommendation, about stuff people really like. The column was the brainchild of our staff writer, Sam Anderson, he explained. Sam figured that there was no shortage of places to find out what writers hate but few spaces for writers to talk about what they love. We would push against this trend, 900 words a week, 40-something times per year. The reason for my hesitation was a simple, unfortunate fact about writing. Writing about things you hate is easy: not just fun, but generative. The criticism tends to entertain, even if you disagree, but the ode doesn't. The writerly tone is well-suited to our age, but it's hard not to see it as a collective defense mechanism—as if revealing your true feelings exposes your unmentionable secrets to the public. Obsessions(喜欢), meanwhile, are inseparable from our peculiarities as people—we come to love things for often weird reasons. When the column really works, it's as revealing about the author as it is its subject. One writer, a man in his late 30s, for example, recommended Pedialyte, which he drinks to balance theeffects of both drinking and exercise, and to cheat his way back to youth.I probably see somewhere between three and five Letter of Recommendation pitches a day. It's a great spot for trying out new writers in the magazine, so I try my best to keep up with all the email, but I often fail.(I feel genuinely terrible about this every day of my life.) Determining which to assign involves seeing how it meets the various criteria we've settled on over the years. We don't like the column to be timely—everything else in the world is timely. But on the other hand, we need to put a headline on the thing that people might reasonably recognize, stop and read about. There should be a personal angle to the recommendation, but also some universally recommendable aspect. But then again, it shouldn't be too recommendable; this isn't a column for lifehacks. The recommendation itself should be attractively unexpected—"sideways," as editors are perhaps too fond of saying—but really, it's just an excuse to cut brilliant writers loose to amuse or inspire us.【小题1】Sam Anderson proposed a column called Letter of Recommendation because he found ________.A.the fashion trend was not easy to push againstB.there was a shortage of good quality columnsC.writers could hardly find a place to share their likesD.his brainchild could sometimes increase readership【小题2】The word "ode"(in paragraph 2)is closest in meaning to________.A.praise B.blame C.hesitation D.determination 【小题3】Why is the writer in his late 30s mentioned in paragraph 2? A.To give an example of the writerly tone.B.To highlight the way that the column selects writers.C.To show how a collective defense mechanism works.D.To illustrate how writers reveal themselves in the column.【小题4】The writer hopes that in the column, ________.A.the recommended items are quite familiar to readersB.the recommended items should follow the latest trendC.readers can learn about life skills from the recommendations D.readers will find the recommendations beyond their expectation5. LilyStudying abroad is an area that is becoming increasingly interesting for researchers, as more students are choosing to do a semester, a year or even a degree in another country. In my research, I set out to establish whether young people attending a course abroad acquire more global awareness than students enrolled on similar courses in their home country, Using a comparative study of 50 Canadian undergraduates, half of whom studied abroad for varying lengths of time, there were shown to be considering gains in global awareness and these were not only noted by the students themselves but also their tutors.ThomasMy research project asked ten students starting a year of study abroad to keep a daily record of their experiences. Having begun the diary a month before leaving home they continued it for a month after they returned. The primary reason for studying abroad in all cases was to polish their language skill. The students were allowed towrite as freely as they wished by were asked to include comments on their language learning experience as well as on the strategies they used to cope with living in a new culture. Analysing the diaries, we found remarkably similar patterns. All the participants demonstrate a gradual recognition and acceptance of difference in other cultures and a new objectivity about their own culture as a result of their experience.JasmineThis paper reports on some research carried out last year into why students choose a period of study abroad, their reasons for selecting a specific destination, their behaviour when abroad and the extent to which the experience matches their expectations. Having administered a questionnaire to 1,000 international students studying at a number of universities in Australia, we got 696 responses. An initial analysis of the responses has revealed some interesting data suggesting that the key factor affecting all the areas we were investigating was the individual's personality and study interests. Country of origin and 'gender proved less significant than expected.JimmyThis research looked at the career paths of 35 young business people who had spent part of their university course at a foreign educational institution in order to ascertain whether those people had acquired greater cross-cultural perspectives through their experience of study abroad. Concerned about the lack of cultural awareness of their staff, a group of US business corporations proposed the research. The results are less conclusive than expected, but they do suggest that a period of study in a foreign country may help students to develop the cross-cultural awareness that US employers currently seek.【小题1】The passage is mainly about four researchers' findings on________.A.the reasons for young students to study abroadB.the impact and effects of studying in another countryC.the trend of more students furthering their study abroadD.the interest of students who once studied in another country【小题2】________used the subjects' personal account as the research material.A.Lily B.Thomas C.Jasmine D.Jimmy【小题3】According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.Most of the researchers found the students global awareness increased.B.All of the researchers took a reserved attitude towards studying abroad.C.None of the researchers thought gender played a role in students' choice.D.Only one of the researchers did research on the subjects' career development.6. When antibiotics(抗生素)first became available, farmers used them freely. Now scientists know that the overuse of antibiotics can cultivate drug-resistant bacteria that are dangerousto human health. Among debates over what kinds of restrictions should be put in place, figuring out how antibiotic-resistant bacteriaevolve and make their way to humans remains an area of intense interest.Jo Handelsman is tracing one such pathway that, as she puts it, travels from "farm to table."Handelsman, a microbiologist who is now associate director for science at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, looked into dairy cows, which are oftentreated with antibiotics and produce manure(排泄物)that farmers use on their crops. In addition to nutrients, that fertilizer may harbor antibiotic-resistant bacteria—a problem because the bacteria can come into contact with plants that are finally shipped to supermarkets and sometimes eaten raw.To find out how those antibiotic-resistant bacteria come to exist, Handelsman and her colleagues at Yale University added manure from a nearby Connecticut farm to raised beds of soil in 2013. In this case, the manure specifically came from cows that were not treated with antibiotics. The researchers unexpectedly found that there were more soil bacteria carrying antibiotic-resistant genes when they were grown with the manure than when they were grown with syntheticnitrogen-based fertilizer—even though the cows were drug-free.Previous research has found that manure from pigs treated with antibiotics contains resistant bacteria, but the cow-pie results suggest there are more factors promoting resistance besidesantibiotic use. Something about manure itself may encourage naturally resistant bacteria to increase. The findings should not, however, give the impression that resistance is everywhere, notes Lance Price, a microbiologist at George Washington University(who was not involved in the study). "We can control this. There's very clear evidence that when we turnoff the antibiotic tap, we bring down drug-resistant bacteria," says Lance.Next on the farm-to-table schedule, Handelsman will test whether radishes grown in soil treated with cow manure are capable of taking up resistant genes from bacteria through their vascular system(循环系统). "They have veins(血管)just like us," she says. Washing the dishes can help you live longer in later yearsEven a small increase in light activity, such as washing dishesor a little gentle gardening, might help lower the risk of an early death among older adults, researchers say.“It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity activity, that just moving around and doinglight intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial,” said Ulf Ekelund, a professor and first author of the study at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. However, the study finds that there is more “bang for your buck” if you engage in intense activity compared with light activity. 【小题1】Published in the BMJ, the latest research involved a review of eight studies encompassing a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. Crucially, all of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers. 【小题2】For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent active, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, gender, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analysed together to give an overview. 【小题3】The resultsheld for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message “sit less and move more and more often.”【小题4】It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of theeffect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to engage in physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time.A.It is said that higher levels of any physical activity help keep off an early grave.B.The studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable.C.The latest study backs up previous research suggesting reducing time spent sitting still is beneficial.D.However, the study had limitations.E.A short period of intense activity is viewed as beneficial as much longer periods of lesser activity.F.The team found a greater volume of activity overall was linked to a lower risk of death.六、概要写作8. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible. The Useful BeanDo you know what the common factor in bee food, vinyl plastic, and tofu is? It is the soybean. Some part of the soybean is used in these products as well as many other edible(可以食用的)and nonedible products. The soybean is also considered to be one of the multipurpose and hardy plants. It can grow in low-quality soil. Throughout the life of the plant, a release of nutrients throughout plant roots makes soil more fertile. Soybeans are also very high in protein. With its hardiness, soil benefits, high-protein content, and various uses, some people believe the soybean will become the greatest weapon against world hunger. There are three standard procedures taken from the soybean plant—oil, protein, and whole soybeans. Oil is used for edible purposes such as cooking oil and salad dressing. Industries make nonedible use of soybean oil by adding to antistatic sprays, printer ink, and shampoo. One significant nonedible use of soybean oil is the making of vinyl plastics. Vinyl is used to make everything fromcredit cards and garden hoses to computer parts.Protein from the soybean is also used in edible and nonedible products. Edible uses for the protein include baby foods and hypoallergenic milk. Even animals benefit: bee food and fish food contain protein from the soybean. Some industries use the protein for nonedible purposes such as cosmetics, adhesives, yarn, and water-based paints.Items made using whole soybeans are the most commonly recognized product of the soybean plant. Whole soybeans are used to make foodfor people and animals. Grocery stores carry a variety of foods made with whole soybeans. Some of these items are pancake flour, coffee, soymilk, soy sauce and tofu.As the versatility(多用途)and hardiness of this bean gains popularity, more uses of soybean products will certainly be discovered._____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________七、汉译英(整句)9. 在他看来,值得投资的是体验,而不是物品。

I was finishing up the first year of an MFA program in poetry. I was tired and puzzled. "Was I good enough to be in the program?" When a professor asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn't want to appear idle(闲散的). "Gardening," I responded immediately. Actually I knew nothing about plants! My professor nodded, saying, "What a good idea, Mari! Emily Dickinson loved gardening." Emily Dickinson had lived in the countryside, studying plants as a child. I was in my late twenties, living in the city without gardening experience.A few days later, I bought a jalapeño seedling(青辣椒秧苗). At least I could say I'd tried gardening. I watered and changed the dirt for my little plant. I even talked to it. And over the summer, it grew bigger and bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn't have a black thumb after all.I started the second year of my MFA, and then it was almost December and my jalapeño was suffering. It was brown in some places; many of its leaves had fallen off. Would my little guy make it? I prayed, "Please be okay." As if its survival were closely linked to mine.I worked hard in school. Spring came. My jalapeño plant came back to life. It grew bigger, with new leaves. And then it flowered. I handed in my graduate paper--a book of poems--in May. "Your poems are strong," my professor said.A huge weight lifted. I'd done it! At that time, I found the flowers on my jalapeño plant were gone. I watchedcloser. Where a flower had been, a tiny green fruit pushed through. I smiled. I had succeeded in my MFA program, and my jalapeño plant had grown right beside me, and I successfully did things I hadn't thought possible.4.Why did the author begin gardening?A.Just by accident.B.For the love for gardening.C.To express fancy for Emily Dickinson.D.Because of the reminding of a professor.5.When did the author begin her first gardening?A.In her childhood.B.In one of her summer breaks.C.In her teens.D.In her first year of MFA program.6.What does the underlined phrase "a black thumb" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.A talent to grow plants.B.A dirty finger to touch plants.C.A good fortune to do everything.D.An inability to do gardening.7.Which proverb can best describe the story above?A.Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.B.Easier said than done.C.It's never too old to learn.D.Do not teach fish to swim.CCreated in the 1920s by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect who designed Waterloo Bridge, red public telephone boxes, which can be seen all over the UK, are regarded as one of the most typical symbols of this country. However, public phones have had their day despite their lovely housings. While coin-operated and card-operated telephones are on the edge of extinction, mobile phones are playing a significant role in people's lives. Though they are more portable, flexible and extensively used, mobile phones have their weakness: battery life. Instead of trashing the phone booths, a project was then promoted to recycle and reuse them. To be consistent with the environment-friendly preference, people are allowed to rent and repurpose the red phone boxes. In this way, they are making an unusual come back. When you take a walk down Tottenham Court Road in London and find low-battery condition, there happens to be a green option for you. The abandoned the red phone boxes are beingused as free charging stations powered by solar energy.Inside the booths, which are newly painted green, there are various adaptors that can be connected to different brands and models of mobile phones. Just walk in, plug your phone in, and charge it up whenever it needs to be supplied with power. Most people would stay inside the boxes while they charge. Fully aware of this when launching the project, Solarbox can now reach a large quantity of audience by displaying ads on solid equipment. Its advertisers include well-known companies like Uber. Yet 30% of advertising space is reserved for local community projects.Apart from converting phone booths into solar-powered charging stations, other forms of transformation can be found in and outside the UK. For example, there is medical equipment or minilibraries adapted from phone booths, while in America, thousands of phone booths have been transformed into wi-fi hot spots.8.What do you know about the public phones boxes?A.The public phones were abandoned.B.The public phones have been replaced by mobile phones.C.The public phones played a significant role in people's lives.D.The public phones are regarded as typical symbols of this country.9.What does the underlined word "repurpose" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Adapt.B.Produce.C.Unite. It starts as early as kindergarten. By the time students reach college, women graduate at a higher rate than men. But there’s an exception. Boys match the grades of girls in elementary school, a new study has found. For them, the gender achievement gap doesn’t appear until adolescence — at which point they start doing worse as a group than girls.More and more studies have shown that boys’ under-performance is not because of any internal reasons. Instead, it seems, it’s largely because of something external: their school environments and peer influences. Thenew study offers a clue about how much school environments affect boys’ academic achievement. Ms. Hsin found that the gender gap for boys in high school was smaller in schools that were less sports-focused, and where boys did better over all. Other studies have also stressed the importance of the school and social environments, especially for boys. For boys, these influences change in adolescence, Ms. Hsin found, a time when children become more aware of their gender identity and are more influenced by peers. One working paper found that the best-performing students had a combination of behaviors typically considered male and female. It used nationally representative survey data about gender standard for about 12,000 high school students. The most traditionally girls and the most boys had the lowest grades.Researchers have other suggestions. Show them role models who got where they are by doing well in school. Emphasize the importance of hard work and daily practice, and encourage both boys and girls to embrace a full range of fields, and not to feel limited by gender roles. Place high expectations on children, and give them opportunities to meet them.12.When do the boys perform as well as the girl?A.In college. B.In kindergarten.C.In elementary school. D.In senior high school.13.What makes the boys perform worse than the girl?A.Their behaviors.B.Their characteristics.C.Their family influences.D.Their school environments.14.What did Ms. Hsin find in his study?A.The boys did better over girls.B.The children are more influenced by peers.C.Social environments influenced boys more.D.The gender gap for girls in high school was smaller in schools.15.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.Children will benefit from role models.B.Children can perform well by working hard.C.Children should be limited by gender roles.D.Children traditionally have the lowest grades in school.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

FoodCMedia Selection for AdvertisementsAfter determining the target audience for a product or service, advertising agencies must select the appropriate media for the advertisement. We discuss here the major types of media used in advertising. We focus our attention on seven types of advertising: television, newspapers, radio, magazines, out-of-home. Internet, and direct mail.TelevisionTelevision is an attractive medium for advertising because it delivers mass audiences to advertisers. When you consider that nearly three out of four Americans have seen the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? you can understand the power of television to communicate with a large audience. When advertisers create a brand, for example, they want to impress consumers with the brand and its image. Television provides an ideal vehicle for this type of communication. But television is an expensive medium, and not all advertisers can afford to use it.Television's influence on advertising is fourfold. First, narrowcasting means that television channels are seen by an increasingly narrow segment of the audience. The Golf Channel, for instance.is watched by people who play golf. Home and Garden Television is seen by those interested in household improvement projects. Thus, audiences are smaller and more homogeneous(具有共同特点的) than they have been in the past. Second, there is an increase in the number of television channels available to viewers, and thus, advertisers. This has also resulted in an increase in the sheer number of advertisements to which audiences are exposed. Third, digital recording devices allow audience members more control over which commercials they watch. Fourth, control over programming is being passed from the networks to local cable operators and satellite programmers.Newspaper? After television, the medium attracting the next largest annual ad revenue is newspapers. The New York Times, which reaches a national audience, accounts for $1 billion in ad revenue annually, ii m increased its national circulation (发行量) by 40% and is now available for home delivery in ion ciues. Locally, newspapers are the largest advertising medium.Newspapers are a less expensive advertising medium than television and provide a way for advertisers to communicate a longer. more detailed message to their audience than they can through 48 hours, meaning newspapers are also a quick way of getting the massage out.Newspapers are ofen the most important form of news for a local community, and they develop a high degree of loyalty from local reader.RadioAdvertisin g on radio continues to grow Radio is often used in conjunction with outdoor bill-boards (广告牌) and ihe Internet to reach even more customers than television. Advertisers are likely to use radio because it is a less expensive medium than television, which means advertisers can afford to repeal their ads often. Internet companies are also turning 10 radio advertising. Radio provides a way for advertisers to communicate with audience members at all times of the day.Consumers listen to radio on their way to school or work, at work, on the way home, and in the evening hours. Two major changes—satellite and Internet radio—will force radio advertisers to adapt their methods. Both of these radio forms allow listeners to tune in stations that are more distant than thelocal stations they could receive in the past. As a result, radio will increasingly attract target audiences who live many miles apart.MagazinesNewsweeklies, women’s titles, and business magazines have all seen increases in advertising because they attract the high-end market, magazines are popular with advertisers because of the narrow market that they deliver. A broadcast medium such as network television attracts all types of audience members, but magazine audiences are more homogeneous, if you read sports illustrated, for example, you have much in common with the magazine’s other readers. Advertisers see magazines as an efficient way of reaching target audience members.Advertiser using the print media-magazines and newspapers-will need to adapt to two main changes. First, the internet willbring larger audiences to local newspapers, these second. Advertisers will have to understand how to use an increasing number of magazines for their tar get audiences. Although some magazines will maintain national audiences, a large number of magazines will entertain narrower audiences.Out-of-home advertisingOut-of-home advertising. Also called place-based advertising, has become an increasingly effective wa y of reaching consumers, who are more active than ever before. Many consumers today do not sit at home and watch television. Using billboards, newsstands, and bus shelters for advertising is an effective way of reaching these on-th e-go consumers. More consumers travel longer distances to and from work, which also makes out-of-home advertising effective, technology has changed the nature of the billboard business, making it a more effective medium than in the past.Using digital printing, billboard companies can print a billboard in 2 hours, compared with 6 days previously. This allows advertisers more variety in the types of messages they create because they. Can change their messages more quickly.InternetAs consumers become more comfortable with online shopping, advertisers will seek to reach this market As consumers get more of their news and information from the Internet, the ability of television and radio to get the word out to consumers will decrease. The challenge to Internet advertisers Is to create ads that audience members remember.Internet advertising will play a more prominent role in organizations' advertising in the near ftuture. Internet audiences tend to be quite homogeneous, but small. Advertisers will have to adjust their methods to reach these audiences and will have to adapt their persuasive strategies to the online medium as well.Direct mailA final advertising medium is direct mail, which uses mailings to consumers to communicate a client's message Direct mail includes newsletters. postcards and special promotions. Direct mail is an effective way to build relationships with consumers. For many businesses.direct mail is the most effective from of advertising.28. With the increase in the number of TV channels_________.A. the cost of TV advertising has decreasedB. the nuiflber of TV viewers has increasedC. advertisers' interest in other media has decreasedD. the number of TV ads people can see has increasedpared with television, newspapers as an advertising medium_________________.A. earn a larger annual ad revenueB. convey more detailed messagesC. use more production techniquesD. get messages out more effectively30.Advertising on radio continues to grow because ___________.A. more local radio stations have been set upB. modern technology makes it more entertainingC. it provides easy access to consumersD. it has been revolutionized by Internet radio.31.Magazines are seen by advertisers as an efficient way to___________.A. reach target audiencesB. modern technology makes it more entertainingC. appeal to educated people.D. convey all kinds of messagesDUniversities Branch OutAs never before in their long history, universities have become instruments of national competition as well as instruments of peace. They are the place of the scientific discoveries that move economies forward, and the primary means of educating the talent required to obtain and maintain competitive advantage. But at the same time, the opening of national borders to the flow of goods, services, information and especially people has made universities a powerful force for global integration, mutual understanding and geopolitical stability. In response to the same forces that have driven the world economy, universities have become more self-consciously global: seeking students from around the world who represent the entire range of cultures and values, sending their own students abroad to prepare them for global careers, offering courses of study that address the challenges of an interconnected world and collaborative (合作的) research programs to advance science for the benefit of all humanity.Of the forces shaping higher education none is more sweeping than the movement across borders.Over the past three decades the number of students leaving home each year to study abroad has grown at an annual rate of 3.9 percent, from 800 000 in 1975 to 2.5 million in 2021. Most travel from one developed nation to another, but the flow from developing to developed countries is growing rapidly. The reverse flow, from developed to developing countries, is on the rise, too.Today foreign students earn 30 percent of the doctoral degrees awarded in the United States and 38 percent of those in the United Kingdom. And the number crossing borders for undergraduate study is growing as well, to 8 percent of the undergraduates at America's best institutions and 10 percent of all undergrad uates in the UK. In the United States, 20 percent of the newly hired professors in science and engineering are foreign-born, and in China many newly hired faculty members at the top research universities received their graduate education abroad.Universities are also encouraging students to spend some of their undergraduate years in another country. In Europe, more than 140 000 students participate in the Erasmus program each year, taking courses for credit in one of 2 200 participating institutions across the continent. And in the United States, institutions are helping place students in summer internships (实习) abroad to prepare them for global careers. Yale and Harvard have led the way, offering every undergraduate at least one international study or internship opportunity—and providing the financial resources to make it possible.Globalization is also reshaping the way research is done. One new trend involves sourcing portions of a research program to another country. Yale professor and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Tian Xu directs a research centre focused on the genetics of human d isease at Shanghai's FudanUniversity, in collaboration with faculty colleagues from both schools. The Shanghai centre has 95 employees and graduate students working in a 4 300-square-meter laboratory facility. Yale faculty, postdoctors and graduate students visit regularly and attend videoconference seminars with scientists from both campuses. The arrangement benefits both countries; Xu's Yale lab is more productive, thanks to the lower costs of conducting research in China, and Chinese graduate students, postdoctors and faculty get on-the-job training from a world-class scientist and his US team.As a result of its strength in science, the United States has consistently led the world in the commercialization of major newtechnologies, from the mainframe computer and the integrated circuit of the 1960s to the Internet infrastructure (基础设施) and applications software of the 1990s. The link between university-based science and industrial application is often indirect but sometimes highly visible: Silicon Valley was intentionally created by Stanford University, and Route 128 outside Boston has long housed companies spun off from MIT and Harvard. Around the world, governments have encouraged copying of this model, perhaps most successfully in Cambridge, England, where Microsoft and scores of other leading software and biotechnology companies have set up shop around the university. For all its success, the United States remains deeply hesitant about sustaining the research-university model. Most politicians recognize the link between investment in science and national economic strength, but support for research funding has been unsteady. The budget of the National Institutes of Health doubled between 1998 and 2021, but has risen more slowly than inflation since then. Support for the physical sciences and engineering barely kept pace with inflation during that same period. The attempt to make up lost ground is welcome, but the nation would be better served by steady, predictable increases in science funding at the rate of long-term GDP growth, which is on the order of inflation plus 3 percent per year.American politicians have great difficulty recognizing that admitting more foreign students can greatly promote the national interest by increasing international understanding. Adjusted for inflation, public funding for international exchanges and foreign-language study is well below the levels of 40 years ago. In the wake of September 11, changes in the visa process caused a dramatic decline in the number of foreign students seeking admission to US universities, and a corresponding surge in enrollments in Australia, Singapore and the UK. Objections from American university and business leaders led to improvements in the process and a reversal of the decline, but the United States is still seen by many as unwelcoming to international students. Most Americans recognize that universities contribute to the nation's well-being through their scientific research, but many fear that foreign students threaten American competitiveness by taking their knowledge and skills back home. They fail to grasp that welcoming foreign students to the United States has two important positive effects: first, the very best of them stay in the States and—like immigrants throughout history—strengthen the nation; and second, foreign students who study in the United States become ambassadors for many of its most cherished (珍视) values when they return home. Or at least they understand them better. In America as elsewhere, few instruments of foreign policy are as effective in promoting peace and stability as welcoming international university students.32. In the United States, how m any of the newly hired professors in science and engineering are foreign-born?A. 10%.B. 20%.C. 30%.D. 38%.33. How do Yale and Harvard prepare their undergraduates for global careers?A. They organize a series of seminars on world economy.B. They offer them various courses in international politics.C. AFeeling down? Why not visit one of these four websites? This site was created in1999and gets about seven million visitors per month. Two of its videos have been chosen as winners for the Webby Awards:Pixar Intro Parody and Web Site Story.Other funny videos to look out for include a debate on the advantages and disadvantages of going to college. This site has lots of really funny videos. And as the name suggests, users vote on videos, choosing the options“funny”or“die”.If the video receives too many“die”votes,it’s sent to the site’s“crypt”. But if it gets enough“funny”votes,it goes into the Hall of Fame. The site was created in2006by comedians Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.The site’s first video,The Landlord, has had over70million views.Videos to watch out for include Just a Tip:Taxi, with some valuable advice on how to catch a taxi, and Over Analyzing Texts, with some tips on how to respond to text messages.Founded in2005, is a social news and entertainment website.Registered users put funny content in the form of the video link or texts on the website.Other users then vote these things “up”or“down”.The most recent and wellliked content appears at the top on the front page of the site.First appearing as a satirical newspaper in1988, has hundred of videos and articles on news and current affairs, and receives an average of7.5million visitors a month. It’s famous for its amusing items, such as Michelle Obama Seen Outside Walking Family Rhinoceros or Dad Can’t1.If you want to watch videos ever winning the Webby Awards, you can visit________.A. B.C. D.2.Videos on the website are________.A.watched over70million times.B.voted by their users.C.based on newspaper stories.D.created by users.3.What do and have in common?A.They include funny videos.B.They include valuable advice.C.They include debates on education.D.They provide satirical news.BOn a cool morning,Wilson Kasaine heads out along a dirt path in southern Kenya. His calmness makes it easy to forget that he’s tracking one of the most dangerous animals in the world.Kasaine is tracking lions—especially one lion called Marti, who is the reallife Lion King of Selenkay Conservancy.Tracking lions on foot may sound like a death wish, but Kasaine has been doing it for most of his life.Born into a traditional Maasai family,he quickly grew to understand the beauty and danger of wildlife.Living with big wild animals forces him to develop a good sense of where they have been and where they may be going.During his12kilometer walks to and from school,he learned how to tell the paw prints(爪印)of a lion from those of other animals.Growing up,Kasaine knew that improving his tracking abilities would help him avoid surprise meetings with dangerous animals. For many Maasai, tracking is mainly a matter of selfprotection. But Kasaine is tracking lions to meet them and to protect them.He leads a small group of wideeyed tourists over the red sandy path, searching for the lion that has left upon it his prints. Each year, thousands of tourists crowd Kenya’s national parks to try to have a look at the“big five”:elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffaloes and lions. The international draw of these animals matters a lot because the nation’s economy is tied to the protection of its wildlife. If Kenya’s wildlife disappears,so does its secondlargest source of income.Wildlife protection efforts in Kenya meant marking off land exclusively(专门地)for animals. But it also meant that the people who had originally lived in the area were forced to leave their land and into smaller surrounding areas. They are also finding it increasingly hard to keep a traditional Maasai lifestyle. But people are glad that it really makes a difference to wildlife protection.4.How did Kasaine track lions?A.By working together with tourists.B.By running after them all the time.C.By going to school every day.D.By studying their paw prints.5.What can we learn from Paragraph4?A.Maasai people are born animal lovers.B.Tourism is a big threat to Kenya’s wildlife.C.Kenya benefits a lot from its wildlife protection.6.What does the underlined word“it”in the last paragraph refer to?A.Kenya’s economic development.B.People’s leaving their original homes.C.Kenya’s secondlargest income source.D.Kenyan people’s traditional Maasai lifestyle. 7.What is the best title for the text?A.Wildlife Protection in Kenya B.Meeting a Dangerous AnimalC.Wilson Kasaine’s Wise Choice D.Learning to Live with LionsCFood storing is common in members of the crow family.A new study tested the birds outside this naturally occurring behaviour, which may have evolved specifically because it gives crows a survival advantage. Some crow species are known to naturally use tools to recover food.So the researchers tested whether the birds could store and recover a tool so they could get it at their food after a gap of 17hours—something we wouldn’t expect them to do naturally. But they were able to instantly select the tool out of a number of unnecessary items. In another experiment, the researchers taught crows to select a token(礼品券)from a number of items so that they could then exchange for food.Again, the birds then showed that they could plan for the future using this new behaviour. This is different from all of the previous studies in future planning, which have focused on naturally occurring behaviour. For example,we know that chimpanzees(黑猩猩)select, transport and save appropriate tools for future needs. These studies have shown that animals can plan for the future—but they left an important question open for debate. Are animals only able to plan to use abilities that have evolved to give them a specific advantage,or can they flexibly and intelligently apply planning behaviour across various actions? Most critics would say the former,as the animals were tested in naturally occurring behaviours. But the new research provides the first evidence that animal species can plan for the future using behaviour that doesn’t typically occur in nature. This supports the view that at least some recognitive abilities in animals don’t evolve just in response to specific problems.Instead,it suggests that animals can apply these behaviours flexibly across problems in a similar way to humans. We need to investigate how flexible behaviour evolved. Then we might be able to see how crows’ability to plan for the future fits in with their broader cognitive powers.8.What’s the new finding about some crows according to Paragraph1?A.They can store food.B.They can use tools to recover food.C.They can store and recover tools.D.They can select and store food.9.What are crows trained by scientists to do when given a token?A.Reject it casually.B.Exchange it for food.C.Save it as their food.D.Build a nest with it.10.What do scientists think of the studies that animals can plan for the future?A.They are controversial.B.They are disappointing.C.They are contradictory.D.They are convincing.11.What can be inferred about recognitive abilities in animals?A.They develop only with age.B.It is unclear how they’ve evolved now.DA billionaire has recently made one of the biggest charitable(慈善的)donations to a university in China’s history.Chen Tianqiao donated$115million to the California Institute of Technology(Caltech) to help advanced brain research. The donation will be spent deepening the understanding of how the brain works.Chen has been interested in brain research, believing it can shape the industries such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. However, this huge donation has caused heated discussions among Chinese scholars and Internet users alike. Many criticized him for choosing to give money to a foreign university rather than home institutes for brain research, which are developing fast and are on track to catch up with the US in just a few years.Rao Yi,a biologist at Peking University, even said the donation was a typical mistake.Others, however, support his choice. They believe Caltech is a more reasonable choice compared to Chinese research institutions.Caltech has a long history and has taken a leading position in biology, and therefore it produces more efficient results. In addition, the results of the research benefit not only the American people, but also the rest of the world.A similar controversial case started two years ago when Pan Shiyi, chairman of SOHO China, donated$15million to Harvard University to help disadvantaged Chinese students. Many believe that China is still behind in the management and use of donated money, and that as a result,Chinese charity donators are looking abroad. In comparison,Western countries like the US, which have a long history of donating money, have welldeveloped systems that use money efficiently. They can also provide full access for donors who want to track the use of the money. To get more donations,Chinese universities should be braver and more honest. They need selfreflection, rather than envy.12.Why did Chen’s donation draw criticism?A.It was not given to a Chinese university.B.It was one of the largest to Caltech.C.It was not used efficiently in the US.D.It was used in brain research.13.What is the reason for some people in favor of Chen’s choice?A.The Chinese are just too envious.B.The achievements will benefit the whole world.C.Caltech is a university with a longer history.D.The fund can help disadvantaged Chinese students.14.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Pan Shiyi in the passage?A.To suggest the enthusiasm of the billionaires.B.To show off generosity of the billionaires.C.To inform Chinese students are poor at academy.D.To stress the disagreement over donating abroad.15.What does the author think of the Chinese universities should do to get more fund?A.Explore artificial intelligence.B.Develop efficient systems.C.Grow fast and catch up with the US.D.Educate more honest graduates.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

BI am a putterer—a person spending a lot of time doing things people usually consider unimportant in a relaxed way. However, I don’t think puttering is wasting my time. It is a satisfying way of dealing with one’s domestic environment in a way one cannot do with the world at large. As a father, I’ve had a difficult time communicating this to my college-age son. Tom recently bought a used car.I was proud of him for negotiating a good deal. When I looked it over, I noticed a tiny spot of rust (锈). Like a superhero out to save the day, I rushed toward the imperfection with a piece of sandpaper and a small bottle of clear nail polish from my puttering resources. Tom watched as I sanded the spot and then coated it with the nail polish. He rolled his eyes. ''You'll understand someday,” I told him.As a rule, I do not usually conduct such public performances. Puttering is, in brief, a solitary(独自进行的) act, and putterers are modest people. They observe small things that most folks simply tolerate ---- a picture hung not in a straight position, a door not shutting well, a shaky table leg ... It doesn't take much effort or time to right such deficiencies. But once again, there is something in the sensibility of the putterer that makes correcting them deeply rewarding. All of this risks giving an impression of endless, and perhaps mindless activity. But nothing could be further from the truth. The beauty of puttering is that it is a symbol of having control over one’s time, responding to the needs of one’s home as one sees fit: If I don’t fix the shaky kitche n table today, I can do it tomorrow, or the next day, or not at all. Puttering, you might say, has set me free.4. Which of the following best describes Tom’s attitude toward his father’s puttering?A. Disapproval.B. Admiration.C. Gratitude.D. Embarrassment.5. What do we know about the author?A. He is extremely strict with his son.B. He shows interest in collecting old things.C. He has an observing eye for small things.D. He often overlooks others’ imperfections.6. Which of the following word is cl osest in meaning to the underlined word “deficiencies” in paragraph 3?A. Consequences.B. Obstacles.C. Inconveniences.D. Drawbacks.7. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. The Benefits of PutteringB. My Enjoyment of PutteringC. Puttering,Wasting TimeD. Puttering, My Daily Life【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. B【解析】这是一篇夹叙夹议的文章。
