省委党校在职研究生英语考试作文类型全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1My Favorite TeacherHi there! My name is Lily and I'm a fifth-grader at Sunny Side Elementary School. Today I want to tell you all about my favorite teacher ever, Mrs. Applegate. She's simply the best!Mrs. Applegate has been my teacher for two years now, since fourth grade. From the very first day of class, I could tell she was going to be really special. She has a warm, friendly smile that lights up the whole room. And her bright red curly hair is just the coolest! But it's not just how she looks that makes her awesome. Mrs. Applegate has a heart of gold. She is the kindest, most patient lady you'll ever meet. She never yells or gets frustrated, even when kids are being a little rowdy. Instead, she just gently reminds us of the rules in her soft, calming voice.I'll never forget the time last year when Billy Johnson had an accident and wet his pants during class. Some of the mean kidsstarted snickering, but not Mrs. Applegate. She quickly but quietly took him out into the hallway to help him get cleaned up, never embarrassing him in front of everyone. When they came back, she acted like nothing had happened. That's the kind of caring person she is.Another thing I love about Mrs. Applegate is how fun and creative she makes learning. Reading lessons are never boring because she does entertaining voices for all the characters. During math, she has us play games and sing silly songs to help remember concepts. And you should see the amazing science experiments she plans!Just last month, we did this neat one where we made little rubber egg creatures. We dipped them in a special solution and they grew six times their original size overnight! It was like magic. Mrs. Applegate definitely has a knack for bringing the subjects to life in a hands-on, engaging way.She also makes an effort to get to know each student individually and what interests us. Like how she knows I'm obsessed with cats and whenever we have free reading time, she recommends me books about felines. Or how she encouraged Michael, who loves basketball, to write a whole report on thehistory of the NBA. It's the little things like that which show how much she cares. To be honest, I wasn't always such a model student. There was a point in third grade where I was going through a rough time at home and my behavior started slipping. I got in trouble a lot for acting out and disrupting class. My grades were dropping and I just didn't care about anything anymore. That's when Mrs. Applegate stepped in. She pulled me aside one day after school and spent over an hour just listening to me vent about what was going on. She didn't judge me at all. She simply lent an ear and gave me a safe space to open up. From then on, she worked closely with me, boosting my confidence and reigniting my love of learning through encouragement and praise.Piece by piece, Mrs. Applegate helped put me back together again. If it wasn't for her believing in me when I didn't believe in myself, there's no telling where I'd be today. I'm so grateful to have had her guidance and support. She's helped mold me into the respectful, hardworking student I am now.More than just an educator, Mrs. Applegate is a role model and a true friend. She has a special way of connecting with kids and bringing out the best in each of us. I'll never forget the wiseadvice she gave when I was having issues with a bully. Instead of letting me stoop to their level, she said: "killing them with kindness is always the better path forward."Those words really resonated with me and helped shape the strong values I now live by. Whenever I'm facing conflict or adversity, I just think - what would Mrs. Applegate do? She's taught me to meet negativity with positivity, to believe in myself, and to treat others how I wish to be treated.I have so much respect and admiration for Mrs. Applegate. She makes the world a kinder, brighter place just by being her amazingly compassionate self. Even outside of school, she's always looking for ways to give back and spread joy to others. Like how she volunteers at the local animal shelter on weekends, or organized that huge book drive for the children's hospital over the holidays.篇2My Life as a Little KidHi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 8 years old. I'm in 3rd grade at Sunshine Elementary School. Today I want to tell you all about my life as a little kid. It's pretty fun being a kid, but also kind of hard sometimes. Let me explain!First off, being a kid means you have to go to school every day. My school day starts really early - I have to get up at 6:30am! My mom comes into my room and wakes me up. She says "Time to rise and shine Xiaoming! A new day has begun." I don't like getting up that early, but I know I have to listen to my mom. After I get dressed in my uniform, I eat breakfast. My favorite is rice porridge with pickled vegetables. Yum! Then I put on my backpack full of books and head out the door. The school bus picks me up at 7:15am. I like looking out the window and watching the city wake up as we drive. At school, my first few classes are the hardest - Chinese, math, and English. I'm pretty good at Chinese and okay at math. But English is super hard for me! All the vocabulary and grammar rules make my head spin. My English teacher is very strict too. If I don't pay attention, she'll rap my knuckles with a ruler. Ouch!Luckily, after those tough classes, we get to have fun classes like art, music, and P.E. In art, we learn how to paint and draw. I love painting pictures with bright colors. In music, we sing folk songs and learn instruments like the erhu and dizi. For P.E., we play games outside like jump rope, handball, and run relay races. Playing outside is my favorite part of the school day for sure.At noon, it's lunchtime in the cafeteria. They serve pretty good food, like stir-fried vegetables, meat and rice dishes, and soup. After lunch, we get a chance to play outside for recess if the weather is nice. Me and my friends love chasing each other around and playing make-believe games. In the afternoon, we have more classes like science, history, and geography. Those can be kind of boring sometimes. The teachers just lecture at us for hours! At least we get homework assignments and worksheets to work on during class. That breaks up the monotony. Finally, at 4pm, school is over for the day! I grab my backpack and wait for the bus to take me home. As soon as I walk through the door, I kick off my shoes and drop my backpack. Ahhh, sweet freedom! I spend the rest of the evening playing inside or running around outside if it's nice out.My mom cooks dinner for us - usually meat and veggie dishes. After dinner, I have to do my homework for a couple hours. Reading comprehension, writing paragraphs, solving math problems...it never ends! Once I'm done though, I get to watch some TV, read comics, or play video games until bedtime at 9pm.On weekends, I don't have to go to school, which is awesome! I love sleeping in late. My parents usually take me places on Saturdays, like to the park, the zoo, a museum, or just shopping. Sundays are more low-key family time at home.Being a kid definitely has its ups and downs. School can be really hard and stressful with all the homework and strict teachers. But we also get to have lots of fun - playing games, creating art, and just being kids! I try not to take life too seriously at this age. There's plenty of time for that when I'm an adult. For now, I'll just enjoy my childhood while it lasts!Well, that's my life as an 8-year-old kid. It's a pretty good deal if you ask me! Thanks for reading my essay. OK, time for me to go play some video games. Bye!篇3My Big English Test AdventureHi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I just had the craziest experience taking a really important English test for grown-ups! You see, my mom is a teacher and she's working on getting her master's degree from the Provincial Party School while still teaching during the day. As part of her program, she had to take this huge English exam to test how good her Englishskills are. Well, a few days before the test, my mom got really sick with a bad flu. She was so worried she wouldn't be able to take the test after working so hard to prepare. That's when I had a brilliant idea!I walked up to my mom while she was laying on the couch looking miserable and I said "Mom, don't worry, I'll take the test for you!" She looked at me like I was crazy at first, but then she saw how determined I was. After thinking it over, she decided to let me try! I was so excited. The next few days, I studied harder than I ever had before. I read all my mom's textbooks and did practice tests over and over again until I felt like I knew everything there was to know about grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing essays. The night before the test, I could barely sleep I was so nervous and anxious. What if I messed up? What if the test was too hard? I didn't want to disappoint my mom.The big day finally arrived. My dad drove me to the test center bright and early. There were so many adults there, I felt so small! I got a few weird looks from people, probably wondering why a kid was there. I just smiled and tried to act confident. After getting my test materials, I took a deep breath and opened the first section - it was listening comprehension. The recordingssounded so fast and there were tons of new vocabulary words I didn't recognize. I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate as hard as I could, writing down anything I could understand.Next up was reading. I'm actually a really fast reader, so I was able to fly through the passages and answer the questions pretty quickly. Phew! Then we moved on to writing - there were two essay prompts we had to write on. One was "What are the benefits and drawbacks of technology in education?" and the other was "Should countries prioritize environmental protection or economic growth?" Those topics seemed SO boring to me, but I didn't have a choice. I decided to try making them a little more fun by using examples from my favorite movies, video games, and books. Hey, at least it made it a tiny bit more interesting! After what felt like an entire day, the test was finally over. I was so relieved but also exhausted. I couldn't wait to go home and just veg out. On the ride home, I started thinking about how grown-ups have it so rough sometimes. Having to take huge tests that could impact your whole career or education? No thanks! I'll stick to kid tests.A couple of weeks later, my mom got her test results in the mail. She opened the envelope slowly, her hands shaking a little.I held my breath, waiting for her reaction...and then she turned to me with the biggest smile! She passed! Not only did she pass, but she scored really high - way higher than she thought she would. She gave me the tightest hug and thanked me over and over. I felt so proud in that moment, like maybe taking that test for her made me a little bit grown-up too. From that crazy day, I learned that if you try your best and never give up, you can achieve anything - even if it seems impossible at first. And getting help from others, like how my mom let me take her place, can make a huge difference. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is asking for help when you need it. I also got to experience what it's like being an adult for a day, which was pretty intense! I don't know if I'm ready for that full time just yet. For now, I'm happy being a kid who loves learning almost as much as video games. Maybe one day when I'm older I'll take on another grown-up challenge...or maybe not! We'll have to see where life takes me. But whatever happens, this test adventure will definitely be a story I'll never forget.篇4My Bestest Writing TipsHi there! My name is Timmy and I'm 8 years old. I'm in 3rd grade and I just love writing stories and essays. My teacher Mrs. Garcia says I'm a really good writer for my age. She even sent one of my stories to a kids' writing contest! I didn't win but I was super proud.Anyways, I wanted to share my very best tips for writing amazing essays. I learned a lot of this stuff from watching my older brother Jerry. He's in college studying to be a teacher, and he has to write essays all the time for his classes. I listen carefully when he talks about the different types of essays he has to do.One kind Jerry talks about a lot is the argument essay. This is where you pick a side on an issue and use evidence to convince the reader why you're right. Jerry says you have to have a really clear thesis statement that lays out your main point. Then each body paragraph should have examples and facts that support your argument. It's really important to address the opposing view too and explain why the other side is wrong.Another common type is the expository essay. This is all about explaining a topic in a clear, logical way. You can't just state your own opinions here. Everything has to be objective facts from reliable sources. Jerry says topics for expository essays are usually concepts, processes, events, or definitions. You haveto go step-by-step and use transition words a lot so it all flows nicely. Now descriptive essays are my personal favorite kind to write! With these, you use vivid sensory details to help the reader picture something in their mind. You can describe a person, place, object, experience - anything at all. I once wrote an awesome descriptive essay about my family's camping trip last summer. I painted such a picture with words that my reader could practically smell the campfire!Sometimes in English class we also have to write persuasive essays. These are kind of like argument essays, but the goal is to convince the reader to think or act a certain way. Like persuading them to recycle more or be kinder to animals. For these, you have to consider your audience a lot and think about what will motivate and appeal to them best.Oh oh, I can't forget about narrative essays! I love these because you get to tell a true story from your own life. The most important parts are having a clear sequence of events, using descriptive language, including your thoughts and feelings, and trying to teach the reader some overall lesson or insight from your experience. The last type I'll mention is the compare and contrast essay. As the name implies, you take two or more things and analyze their similarities and differences. Like you could compare two sports, two books, two countries, etc. You'd put the ways they are alike in one section, and the ways they are different in another section.I hope these tips help all you awesome writers out there! Remember, the most important keys to great writing are using lots of juicy details, following a clear structure, and most of all, having fun with it. Writing is an art, so make it creative and make it yours.Okay, time for me to go play some video games now. Happy writing everyone!篇5My Wonderful School LifeHi there! My name is Lily and I'm 8 years old. I'm in 3rd grade at Sunshine Elementary School. Today, I want to tell you all about my amazing school life. Get ready for a fun ride!School is the best place ever! I love going there every day (except for the weekends, of course). I wake up super early at 6AM because I'm just too excited to sleep in. My mom makes me a yummy breakfast like pancakes or oatmeal to give me lots of energy. Then I put on my cute school uniform - it's a white shirt with a red skirt. I really like the uniform because it makes me feel like a true student. The best part of my day is when I get to meet up with my best friends, Emma and Jack. We've been besties since kindergarten! We always walk to school together and talk about all kinds of silly stuff. Sometimes we even make up fun games to play on our way there. Once, we pretended the sidewalk was hot lava and we had to jump from square to square. It was really hard not to step on the "lava"!When we get to school, we head straight to our classroom. Our teacher, Mrs. Roberts, is the nicest ever. She always has a big smile on her face and gives us high-fives as we walk in. The classroom is so colorful and bright, with lots of posters and student artwork hanging on the walls. My favorite area is the reading corner - it has tons of fun books and cozy bean bags to sit on.My favorite subjects are math and art. I find math really easy and fun, especially when we get to play games that involve counting or adding numbers. Art class is awesome because weget to do all sorts of crafty projects like painting, sculpting with clay, and making collages. I'm a pretty good artist if I do say so myself!Recess is definitely the highlight of my day. I get so excited when the bell rings because that means we get to go out and play! The playground has so many cool things like swings, seesaws, monkey bars, and my absolute favorite - the massive sandbox. Emma, Jack, and I love digging around and building sandcastles. Sometimes we even bury each other and pretend to be sphinxes guarding an ancient tomb. Our imaginations run wild during recess! After recess, we have lunch in the cafeteria. The food isn't as good as what my mom makes, but it's still pretty tasty. My favorite meals are pizza day on Fridays and taco day on Tuesdays.I always get seconds of those! Emma, Jack, and I like to play fun games during lunch too, like having staring contests or seeing who can whistle the longest. In the afternoon, we sometimes have special classes like music, gym, or computer lab. Those are really fun becausethey're a nice break from the usual reading, writing, and math lessons. In music, we learn how to play instruments like xylophones and recorders. Gym class is the best because we getto run around and play games like dodgeball or tag. And in computer lab, we practice typing skills and get to play educational games on the computers.Once school is over for the day, Emma, Jack, and I walk home together again. We like to take a different route sometimes and explore new areas. One time, we found this really cool tree that was perfect for climbing, so now we call it "Our Tree." We've made a secret hideout up there with snacks and toys stashed away. It's our super special clubhouse! When I get home, I have a snack like an apple or some crackers, and then I start my homework. It's not too difficult, maybe just a couple of worksheets or reading a few pages from a book. Once I'm done, I get to relax and play for the rest of the evening. Sometimes Emma and Jack come over and we play make-believe games or have indoor campouts. Other times, I just watch a movie or read with my parents. Before bed, we always have a family dinner together where we talk about our days. Then it's Bath time, story time, and zzzz off to dreamland!School days are just the best. I have so much fun learning new things, playing with my friends, making cool art projects, and just being a kid. Sunshine Elementary is like a second home to me. I feel so lucky to go to such an amazing school with thenicest teachers and buddies. I can't wait to see what other adventures await me in the years to come. Being a student totally rocks!篇6My Big Important English TestHi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I just took a really big English test and I wanted to tell you all about it. It was for the grown-ups who want to go to the fancy Party School to learn more after they're already done with regular school. But even though I'm just a kid, they still made me take the test too! I think they wanted to see how good my English is compared to the grown-ups.The test had a bunch of different sections. First there was listening where we had to listen to recordings and answer questions about what we heard. That part was kind of hard because the recordings went pretty fast and had some big words I didn't know. But I tried my best to understand the main ideas. Then there was reading. We had to read some passages and answer comprehension questions. I've gotten pretty good at reading English books for kids my age, but some of those passages used very advanced vocabulary that even my teacherwould have struggled with! I had to try to guess meanings from context clues.Next up was the writing section. We had to write an essay responding to a prompt about an important issue. The prompt I got was: "What is the biggest challenge facing the world today and what should be done to address it?" Yikes! That's a really deep question, even for a grown-up. I wrote about how I think climate change and pollution are huge problems, and that we all need to reduce our waste, conserve energy, and protect the environment more. I tried to use lots of examples and reasons to support my points, just like my teacher says. But by far the hardest section for me was the speaking portion at the end. I had to have an entire conversation in English with a test grader about a random topic. The topic I got was "innovative technologies changing the modern workplace." How is a 10-year-old supposed to discuss that?! I barely know what most of those words mean. I just tried to nod, smile, and give simple responses based on the limited vocabulary I do know about things like computers and smartphones.Overall, I think I probably didn't do too well on the test compared to the grown-ups. But I still tried my absolute hardest and I'm proud of myself just for getting through such achallenging English exam at my age. And who knows, maybe one day when I'm all grown up I'll take the test again to get into the fancy Party School myself! But for now, I'm just happy to be a regular kid.Phew, that's enough writing about tests for one day! I'm going to go play outside and not think about English for a little while. Thanks for listening to me talk about my experience. Study hard, but also remember to have fun!。

It for ces you to think about your death, a subject many prefernot to confront. But there’s a single, overriding reason to buy life insurance: to provide an income for your dependents should you die.D on’t depend solely on an agent to figure your li fe-insurance needs. Rule-of-thumb estimates such as five or eight times your income are guesses; they may produce too little or too much insurance. Carry too little insurance and you may not provide a reasonable standard of living for your family after your death; carry too much and you may not enjoy a reasonable standard of living while you are alive.M ost people who have life insurance don’t have enough. The median amount of coverage for all adults with life insurance was only ©†15,000 in 1984. That’s obvi ously not enough to sustain a family with young children for very long. Nationwide Insurance found that married men in its 1984 survey carried an average of about ©†101,880 in life insurance; they need about ©†100,706 more. Married women carried about ©†43,516 worth insurance but needed some ©†98,507 more.H ow do you determine the amount of life insurance you would need to maintain yourfamily’s current life-style if the breadwinner died? First, what your family expenses would be if you died tomorrow. Then analyze your assets and the sources of income that you can use to cover the expenses. Finally, subtract the assets from the needs. The result is the amount of additional insurance that you’ll need to buy.1.The passage intends to tell you.A.life insurance isn’t fun to buyB.life insurance is most important in maintaining your family’s current life-styleC.l ife insurance is the result of amount of additional insurance you’ll need to buyD.how to determine the amount of life insurance you would need2.Why is life insurance not fun to buy?A.Because many people prefer not to talk about the subject.B.Because life insurance can be very expensive.C.Because it reminds you that you may die one day.D.Because it forces you to think.3.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A.Estimates such as five or eight times your income are not reliable.B.Those agents can produce too much insurance.C.You must not rely on agents only to tell you how much life insurance youneed.D.You should believe in neither your agent nor those empirical estimates.4.If you carry too little or too much insurance .A.either you or your family will sufferB.you may not provide a reasonable standard of living for your family afteryour deathC.y ou may not enjoy a reasonable standard of living while you’re aliveD.you will know in the end that they are just wild guesses5.How do you determine the amount of life insurance you would need?A.Analyze your assets and sources of income.B.E stimates your family’s expenses.C.Take away the assets from the expensesD.All of the above参考答案1.D2. Their answer is the bicycle , or “bike”.In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In new York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines. For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. 党校研究生英语复习资料完形填空Tourism has become a very big business. For Spain, Italy and Greece it is the largest resource of foreign exchange, and even for Britain, it is t he fourth. Faced with this huge new income, no government can afford to look down on the business. Questions of hotel bath rooms, beach umbrell as and ice-cream sales are now discussed by ministers of tourism with sol emn expertise. Before the Second World War the tourist industry was wid ely regarded as being unmanly and stupid. But tourism has become a ne w industry, as trade business used to do. In Spain, Italy, Greece and much of Eastern Europe, new road systems of Eastern Europe, new road syste ms have opened up in the country, first to tourists, and then to industry an d locals. All of tourism is a nationalized industry, a minor part of national pla nning. In a place west of Marseilles ,the French government is killing mosquitoes and built six big vacationg placesto pull nearly a million tourists. In Eastern Europe, a whole new seaside civilization has sprung u p over the last few years. The governments have greatly benefited when t ourism from the West multiplied from half a million four years ago to ne arly two million last year.Thousands of years ago in Egypt, kings built the pyramids. They used to build them as their tombs. The kings thought the pyramids would help them find life after death. They also wanted the world to remember them as important people. Some pyramids were for queens. But they are less interesting because they are not as big. The oldest pyramid that we know today is the pyramid near Sahara in Egypt. It is about 5,000 years old. Thereare many pyramids along the Nile River. The largest is the pyramid of Khufu. It is made of two million three hundred thousand huge stones, most of them higher than a person. It is about 144 meters high. Inside the pyramid are the burial rooms for the king and queen and long passage ways to these rooms. The rest of the pyramid is solid stone. We know there were wonderful treasures in the pyramids. Robbers broke into the pyramids and took many of these treasures. Today some of the treasures are in museums ever. How did the people of ancient days build the pyramids? How did they carry and lift the huge stones? Each stone lifts so well and they didn't have our modern machines. Scientists have studied the pyramids but nobody can say just how they did it. Someday if you can, you ought to go to see the pyramids. I assure you that they would be amazing.Broadly speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, reserved person who is fully relaxed only among people he knows well.In the presence of strangers or foreigners he often seams inhibited, otherwise embarrassed. You have only to take a commuter train any morning or evening to see the truth of this. Serious looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or dozing in a corner; no one speaks. In fact, to do so would seem most unusual.Practically, there is here an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior. Which, if broken, makes the person immediately the object of attention. It is a well-known fact that the English have a passion for the discussion of their weather and that, given half a chance, they will talk about it at length. Some people argue that it is because English weather violates forecast and hence is a source of interest to everyone. This may be so.Fundamentally Englishmen cannot have much faith in the weathermen, who, after promising fine, sunny weather fo r the following day, are of- ten proved wrong when a cloud o ver the Atlantic brings rainy weather to all districts! The man in the street seems to be as accurate —or as inaccurate — as the weathermen in his predictions. The overseas visitors may be excused for showing surprise at the number of references to weather that the English make to each other in the course of a single day. Very often conversational greetings are conducted by comments on the weather. "Nice day, isn't it?" "Beautiful!" may well be heard insteadof "Good morning, how are you?" Although the foreigner may consider this exaggerated and comic, it is worthwhile pointing out that it could be used to his advantage. If he wants to start a conversation with an Englishman but is at a loss to know where to begin, he could do well to mention the state of the weather. It is a safe subject which will stimulate an answer from even the most reserved of Englishmen. It had been a tiring day and I was looking forward to a quiet evening. My husband wouldn’t come back until late and I had decided to sit down in a comfortable armchair in the living room and read a good book. I put the children to bed early and fixed a cold supper and some coffee. Soon I was settled comfortably with my book in front of me and a sandwich and cup of coffee on a tray beside me.I was just beginning to eat when the telephone rang. I dropped my book and hurried to answer it. By the time I got back to the living room, my coffee was cold. I ate the sandwich and began sipping cold coffee with my book still open to the first page. Suddenly there was a loud knock at the front door. It startled me so muchthat I spilled some coffee on my skirt. The man at the door was looking for a certain address and wantedme to give him directions. It took me a long time to get rid of him. After that, I sat down again and managed to read a whole pagewithout further interruption—until the baby woke up. He started screaming at the top of his lungs, so I rushed upstairs. He was still awake at 11 o′clock when my hu sband came home, I could have thrown something at him when he asked me if I had spent a pleasant evening.完型句子The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. They have stood for nearly 5,000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them scattered along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the "Step" pyramid and the "Bent" pyramid. Some of the pyramids still look much the same as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to preserve the pyramids, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last for ever.It is practically certain that plans were made for the building of thepyramids because the plans of other large works have fortunately been preserved. However, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. Consequently, we are only able to guess atthe methods used. Nevertheless, by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, archaeologists have formed a fairly clear picture of them. One thing is certain: there must have been months of careful planning before they could begin to build. The first thing they had to do was to choose a suitable place. You may think this would have been easy with miles and miles of empty desert around, but a pyramid could not be built just anywhere. Certain rules had to be followed, and certain problems had to b overcome. The step pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile, the side on which the sun sets. This was for religious reasons. It also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however,as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point.Water transport was,of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base which was not likely to crack under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally,it had to be near the capital,or better still, near the king’s palace so that he could visit it easily and personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body. From good reading we can derive pleasure, companionship, exp erience, and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time being we forget our surroundings and even our identity. Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasu res in life. It increases our contentment when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should never fail t o give us enjoyment and satisfaction. With a good book in our hands we need never be lonely. Whe ther the characters portrayed are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our companions and friends. In the pa ges of books we can walk with the wise and the good of all lands and all times. The people we meet in books may delight us either because they resemble human friends whom we hold dear or beca use they present unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances. Our human friends sometimes may bore us, bu t the friends we make in books need never weary us with their com pany. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear o f hurting their feelings. When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy, and encouragem ent.One of the most valuable gifts bestowed by books is experienc e. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of e xperiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realiti es of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can. To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no airship or ocean liner o r stream-lined train to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our heart's desire. Through books we may get the thrill of hazardo us adventure without danger. We can climb lofty mountains, brave t he perils of an Antarctic winter, or cross the scorching sands of th e desert, all without hardship. In books we may visit the studios of Hollywood; we may mingle with the gay throngs of the Paris bou levards; we may join the picturesque peasants in an Alpine village or the kindly natives on a South Sea island. Indeed, through book s the whole world is ours for the asking. The possibilities of our lit erary experiencesare almost unlimited. The beauties of nature, the enjoyment of music, the treasures of art, the triumphs of architectur e, the marvels of engineering, are all open to the wonder and enjo yment of those who read.阅读理解Demands for stronger protection for wildlife in Britain sometimes hide the fact that similar needs are felt in the rest of Europe. Studies by the Council of Europe, of which 21 counties are members, have shown that 45 per cent of reptile species and 24 per cent of butterflies are in danger of dying out.European concern for wildlife was outlined by Dr Peter Baum, an expert in the environment and natural resources division of the council, when he spoke at a conference arranged by the administrators of a British national park. The park is one of the few areas in Europe to hold the council's diploma for nature reserves of the highest quality, and Dr Peter Baum had come to present it to the park once again. He was afraid that public opinion was turning against national parks, and that those set up in the 1960s and 1970s could not be set up today. But Dr Baum clearly remained a strong supporter of the view that natural environments needed to be allowed to survive in peace in their own right."No area could be expected to survive both as a true nature reserve and as a tourist attraction," he went on. The short-sighted view that reserves had to serve immediate human demands for outdoor recreation should be replaced by full acceptance of their importance as places to preserve nature for the future."We forget that they are the guarantee of life systems, on which anybuilt-up area ultimately depends," Dr Baum went on. "Wecould manage without most industrial products, but we could not manage without nature. However, our natural environment areas, which are the original parts of our countryside, have shrunk to become mere islands in a spoiled and highly polluted land mass."1. Recent studies by the council of Europe show thatA) it is only in Britain that wildlife needs more protectionB) certain species of reptiles an butterflies in Europe need protectingC) there are fewer species of reptiles and butterflies in Europe than else whereD) all species of wildlife in Europe are in danger of dying out2. Dr Baum,a representative of the Council, visited one particular British national park becauseA) he was presenting the park with a diploma for its achievementsB) he was concerned about its managementC) it was the only national park of its kind in Europe.D) it was the only park which had ever received a diploma from the Council.3. Although it is difficult nowadays to convince the public of the importance of nature reserves,Dr.Baum felt that _____________A) People would support moves to create mere environment areasB) People would carry on supporting those national parks in existenceC) existing national parks would need to be more independent to surviveD) certain areas of our countryside should be left undisturbed by man4. In Dr Baum's opinion, a true nature reserveA) could never survive in a modern ageB) should provide buildings for human activitiesC) should be regarded as a place where nature is protectedD) could provide special areas for tourists to enjoy5. Although we all depend on the resources of nature for our survival,A) industrial products are replacing all our natural resourcesB) We have allowed areas of countryside to be spoilt by industrial developmentC) we have forgotten what our original countryside looked likeD) it is only on islands that nature survivesThe word "conservation" has a thrifty (节俭)meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave what we ourselves enjoy in such good condition so that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials;most of them, even until very recently, had this foolish ideathat the treasures were "limitless" and"inexhaustible". Most of the citizens or earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicatedand delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthycondition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry (林地) was a newidea: timber (木材) was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands;soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied longterm climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word "conservation" hadnothing of the meaning that it has for us today. For the sake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about repairing the mistakes of our forefathers.Conservation should, therefore, be made a part of everyone's daily life.Toknow about the water table (地下水位) in the ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the basic mathematic formulas. We need to know why all watersheds need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and river must be made to yield their full benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea.We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them.We need to know the importance of big, mature trees, because living space for most of man's fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surfacebut also in cubic volume above the earth. In brief, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.1. The author's attitude towards the present situation in the use of natural resources is ________.A. criticalB. neutralC. positiveD. suspicious2. According to the author, the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that ________.A. they did not know the importance of nature studyB. they had no idea about scientific forestryC. they had little or no sense of environmental protectionD. they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials3. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that earlier generationgs didn’t realizeA. the importance of proper use of landB. the value of the beauty of natureC. the harmfulness of soil destruction and river floodsD. the interdependence of water, soil, and living things4. To avoid the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that ________A. we plant more treesB. we return to natureC. natural science be taught to everybodyD. environmental education be directed toward everyone5. What does the author imply by saying "living space...above the earth" in the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?A. We need to take some measures to protect spaceB. Our living space should measured in cubic volumeC. Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smallerD. We must create better living conditions for both birds and animalsThe long years of food shortage in this country have suddenly given way to apparentabundance. Stores and shops are choked with food. Ratio ning (定量供应) is virtually suspended, and overseas suppliers have been asked to hold back deliverie s. Yet, instead ofjoy, there is widespread uneasiness and confusion. Why d o food prices keep on rising, whenthere seems to be so much more food a bout? Is the abundance only temporary, or has itcome to stay? Does it me an that we need to think less now about producing more food athome? No one knows what to expect. The recent growth of export surpluses on the world foodmarket has certai nly beenunexpectedly great, partly because a strange sequence of two suc cessful grain harvests.North America is now being followed by a third. M ost of Britain’s overseas suppliers of meat, too, are offering more this year and home production has also risen. But the effect of all this on the food situation in this country has been ma de worse by asimultaneous rise in food prices, due chiefly to the gradual c utting down of governmentsupport for food. The shops are overstocked w ith food not only because there is more foodavailable, but also because pe ople, frightened by high prices, are buying less of it.Moreover, the rise in domestic prices has come at a time when world pric es have begun to fall, with the result that imported food, with the exceptio n of grain, is often cheaper than thehome-produced variety. And now grai n prices, too, are falling. Consumers are beginning to askwhy they should not be enabled to benefit from this trend. The significance of these developments is not lost on farmers. The older g eneration have seen itall happen before. Despite the present price and mar ket guarantees, farmers fear they areabout to be squeezed between cheap f ood imports and a shrinking home market. Presentproduction is running a t 51 per cent above pre-war levels, and the government has called for ane xpansion to 60 per cent by 1956; but repeated Ministerial advice is carryi ng little weight andthe expansion programme is not working very well.1. Why is there “wide-spread uneasiness and confusion about the food situation in Britain?”A) The abundant food supply is not expected to last.B) Britain is importing less food.C) Despite the abundance, food prices keep rising.D) Britain will cut back on its production of food.2. The main reason for the rise in food prices is that ________.A) people are buying less foodB) the government is providing less support for agriculture productsC) domestic food production has decreasedD) imported food is driving prices higher3. Why didn’t the government’s expansion programme work very wel l?A) Because the farmers were uncertain about the financial support the go vernmentguaranteedB) Because the farmers were uncertain about the benefits of expanding pr oductionC) Because the farmers were uncertain about whether foreign markets co uld be found for theirproduceD) Because the older generation of farmers were strongly against the prog rammer4. The decrease in world food price was a result of ________.A) a sharp fall in the purchasing power of the consumersB) a sharp fall in the cost of food productionC) the overproduction of food in the food-importing countriesD) the overproduction on the part of the main food-exporting countries5. What did the fut ure look like for Britain’s food production at the ti me this articlewas written?A) The fall in world food prices would benefit British food producers.B) An expansion of food production was at hand.C) British food producers would receive more government financial supp ort.D) It looks depressing despite government guarantees.Let us ask what were the preparation and training Abraham Lincoln had for oratory, whether political or forensic.Born in rude and abject poverty, he never had any education, except what he gave himself, till he was approaching manhood. Not even books wherewith to inform and train his mind were within his reach. No school, no university, no legal faculty had any part in training his powers. When h e became a lawyer and a politician, the years most favorable to continuou s study had already passed, and the opportunities he found for reading we re very scanty. He knew but few authors in general literature, though he k new those few thoroughly. He taught himself a little mathematics, but he could read no language save his own, and can have had only the faintest a cquaintance with European history or with any branch of philosophy. The want of regular education was not made up for by the persons a mong whom his lot was cast. Till he was a grown man, he never moved in any society from which he could learn those things with which the mind of an orator to be stored. Even after he had gained some legal practice, th ere was for many years no one for him to mix with except the petty practi tioners of a petty town, men nearly all of whom knew little more than he did himself.Schools gave him nothing, and society gave him nothing. But he had a powerful intellect and a resolute will. Isolation fostered not only self-re liance but the habit of reflection, and indeed, of prolonged and intense ref lection. He made all that he knew apart of himself. His convictions were his own——clear and coherent. He was not positive or opinionated and h e did not deny that at certain moments he pondered and hesitated long bef ore he decided on his course. But though he could keep a policy in suspen se, waiting for events to guide him, he did not waver. He paused and reco nsidered, but it was never his way to go back on a decision once more or t o waste time in vain regrets that all he had expected had not been attained . He took advice readily and left many things to his ministers; but he did n ot lean on his advisers. Without vanity or ostentation, he was always inde pendent, self-contained, prepared to take full responsibility for his acts.1. It is implied in the second paragraph that Abraham LincolnA) was illiterateB) was never educatedC) was never provided with any regular educationD) behaved rudely when he was young2. We are also told that Abraham LincolnA) never cared much for readingB) did much reading when he was youngC) never had much chance to readD) became an enthusiastic reader when he was grown up3. It is said in the third paragraph that Abraham LincolnA) was anti-socialB) learned little from his friendsC) had few friendsD) knew very few doctors4. The habit of reflection helped LincolnA) to develop independenceB) to become more opinionatedC) to attain clear convictionsD) to become a hesitant person。

Passage Translation短文翻译(P41-46)1Researchers believe women with just one child have more spare time to earn money and have become an important source of family income that helps improve living standards and educate children. They have consequently improved women's status in both the family and society. The survey showed women with fewer children only spend 20 per cent of their time on household chores, compared t0 38 per cent for women with more children. The survey was carried out as part of national research on the result and benefit of family planning.2Astronomers can tell just how hot the surface of the moon gets. The side of the moon toward the sun gets two degrees hotter than boiling water. The night side reaches 243 degrees below zero.In an eclipse, the earth's shadow falls on the moon. Then the moon's temperature may drop 300 degrees in a very short time.A temperature change like this cannot happen on the earth. Why does it happen on the moon? Astronomers think that the surface of the moon is dust. On the earth, rocks store heat from the sun. When the sun goes down, the rocks stay warm. But the dust of the moon cannot store heat. So when the moon gets dark, the heat escapes quickly. The moon gets very cold.3But in 1991, under pressure from environmentalists around the world, Brazil reversed course. It ended tax favors that had encouraged clearing of the Amazon rain forest, and agreed to a plan to finance new forest protection projects.Cattle farmers, miners, and settlers have protested the move and continue to destroy the forests, although at a slower pace than before. The conflict enlarged last year when miners killed a group of Amazon Indians in order to seize their land. The government promises it will protect the region's native people, but questions remain as to its true level of commitment.4American cities are similar to other cities around the world. Cities contain the very best aspects of a society. They also contain the very worst parts of a society. American cities are changing, just as American society Js changing. After World War II, city people became wealthier. They had more children. They needed more space. They moved out of their apartments in the city to buy their own houses. They bought houses in the suburbs. During the 1950s the American "dream" was to have a house in the suburbs. Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in 1950s are now adults. They, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. Many of them are single; others are married, but often without children. A new class is moving into the city-a wealthier class.5Some new arrivals will come from cultures where it is considered impolite to work too quickly. Unless a certain amount of time is allowed to elapse, it seems in their eyes as if the task being considered were insignificant. not worthy of proper respect. Assignments are, consequently, felt to be given added weight by the passage of time. In the U.S., however, it is taken as a sign of skillfulness or being competent to solve a problem, or fulfill a job successfully, with speed. Usually, the more important a task is, the more capital, energy, and attention will be poured into it in order to "get it moving".6People who get to know the limit, I think, must have experienced what it is to overdo a thing. The limit can be found after one has gone to extremes. If you haven't had such experience, if you have never made mistakes, never cherished ideas of rebellion, you will never find it. If you behave too well, neither overdo anything nor make any mistakes, you will naturally fail to find what's most suitable to you.The offspring of American-Chinese follow the same course of life almost without exception. When they go to middle school they resent the Chinese way of education their parents have given them and look down upon their peers with the same Chinese background. During this period their parents are most nervous, quite at a loss, and then examine themselves of their failure in educating their children.7Various newspapers of late carry letters from readers reflecting social conditions or more often requesting solutions to knotty problems in life. I am fond of reading them because they mirror the life and thought of people of all descriptions. The same is true of foreign newspapers. Some of them have setup special columns with special columnists in charge of answering questions. An American woman journalist named Ann Landers was once put in charge of such correspondence for over 800 newspapers respectively.8Of course, there's a big difference between an "event" and a real national holiday. To that end, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of every June as Father's Day. And in 1972, Richard Nixon made Father's Day as a true national holiday-60 years after Mother's Day had been declared a national holiday!Father's Day is a day of commemoration and celebration of Dad. It is a day to not only honor your father, but all men who have acted as a father figure in your life-whether as Stepfathers, Uncles, Grandfathers, or "Big Brothers".9Many Americans find silence uncomfortable. They will say anything to fill any quietness if it extends for more than a moment. Students often study with their radios blaring; housewives leave televisions on for the 'companionship' of sound even though they may be working in some other room. lf you are silent for long periods, they will do their best to 'draw you out' or will ask if you feel all right or if there is anything they can do to help you. One aspect of silence can be confusing; however, if Americans disagree with what you are saying, Many of them will remain quiet. This may not indicate agreement; often it only means that they consider it impolite to argue further.1OSomeday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the website you've visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits. In fact, it's likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a girlfriend, a company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen.11Since before the dawn of history, man has been able to make his own heat. He has been able to release the sun's heat that is trapped in things such as wood, coal, and oil. And he has been able to use this heat.Heat has made civilization possible. With heat, man could melt metals. As man learned to use metals and fuels, industries grew. As a result, engines were invented. These are machines that change heat energy into mechanical energy. Engines can do the work of many men. Without engines industrial civilization is impossible.Yet when the first engines were built in the 17th century, men were still wondering about the nature of heat. 'What is it?' they asked. Not until the early years of the 19th century did they find the right answer.12We communicate a great deal, researchers have found, with our bodies-----by the way we move, sit, stand and what we do with our hands and heads. Imagine a few people sitting in a waiting room: one is tapping his fingers on his briefcase, another keeps rubbing his hands together, another is biting his fingernails. These people aren't talking but they're "saying" a lot if you know the "body language" they're using.13Where is the best graffiti found? Who creates it, and why? Reisner reports that the best graffiti is often seen in large urban areas, particularly at universities and in the restrooms of coffeehouses and smart bars. Graffiti seems to be written predominantly by men; lately, however, women have become increasingly productive. The liveliest writing is often by students, hippies, and young business people. Graffiti is produced for a variety of reasons: to express an opinion, to voice an insult, to share a joke, to assert One's own individuality, to protest social and political conditions.14Ask the average American, "What is freedom?" You will probably hear, "It's being able to do what I want to do." When Americans think of freedom, they often think of individualism. They see themselves more as individuals than as members of a family or social group. American-style democracy tries to protect individual rights. It also promises each person the freedom to make choices. People in other cultures may not understand this emphasis on individuals. Stressing individual human rights seems strange to cultures where the rights of society are more important.Privacy is one good example of individual rights. Personal freedom in America often means the right to one's own space. In many American homes, each child has his or her own bedroom. Parents feel they should knock before entering. When Americans want to visit friends or relatives, they usually call first. They don't want to invade someone's privacy, even if they know the person quite well.15First and foremost, we can make protecting the environment easier. Programs that are time-consuming, hidden and expensive only discourage participation. Creating easy and low-cost opportunities for businesses and consumers to work together will strengthen our commitment to protecting the environment. Free global recycling and product recovery programs------where businesses take ownership over what they make and sell ------require little effort on the part of consumers and pay off.16Although most weddings follow long-held traditions, there's still room for American individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors in a scenic spot. A few even have the ceremony while sky-diving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears "something old, something new. Something borrowed and something blue". The groom wears a formal suit or tuxedo(无尾晚礼服)Several close friends participate in the ceremony as attendants, including the best man and the maid of honor.17After lunch Diane took her bike and sneaked quietly into the yard. She moved carefully to the plot of soil under the tree in back of the house as she checked to see that nobody watched her. She leaned her bicycle against the tree and bent down. All around, dark clouds rumbled noisily in the sky; a streak of yellow zigzagged far away, and she trembled. Digging swiftly in the hot earth she made a small hole and in a moment took a wrinkled ten-dollar bill from her pocket. After she slipped the money into the ground and covered it, she breathed deeply and smiled. She was glad that was over! Now no one would find it or know how she got it. Certainly it would be there later when she wanted it.18On Saturday morning Tom has to whitewash the fence, but manages to persuade his friends to help him finish the irksome job quickly. That afternoon he sees a new girl in Jeff Thatcher's garden and shows off in front of her; she gives him a flower. When he returns later that evening to try to see her again, he is chased off by a maidservant. Sunday is a difficult day for Tom. First he has to learn some verses from the Bible and then attend Sunday school. Here he again sees the new girl and learns that she is Jeff Thatcher's niece. To impress her he trades Bible-reading tickets with his classmates and claims the Bible that is awarded to students who have memorized 2,000 verses. The Bible is presented by Judge Thatcher, the girl's father; unfortunately the Judge also asks Tom some questions that expose his ignorance of the Scriptures.19For many people, the root of their stress is anger, and the trick is to find out where the anger is coming from. "Does the anger come from a feeling that everything must be perfect?" Eliot asks."That's very common in professional women. They feel they have to be all things to all people and do it all perfectly. They think, 'I should, I must, I have to'. Good enough is never good enough. Perfectionists cannot delegate. They get angry that they have to carry it all, and they blow their tops. Then they feel guilty and they start the whole cycle over again."20Spoiling a child also happens when parents are unable to stand up to their children's unreasonable demands. Such parents fluctuate between saying no and giving in -----but neither response seems satisfactory to them. If they refuse a request, they immediately feel a wave of regret for having been so strict or ungenerous. If they give in, they feel regret and resentment over having been too easy. This kind of variability not only loosens the parents' ability to set limits, it also sours the parent-child relationship to some degree, robbing parents and their children of some of the happiness and mutual respect that is present in healthy families.21Though your parents probably meant your name to last a lifetime, remember that when they picked it they'd hardly met you, and the hopes and dreams they valued when they chose it may not match yours. If your name no longer seems to fit you, don't despair; you aren't stuck with the label. Movie stars regularly change their names. And with some determination, you can, too.22A lot of people also think that all entertainment world makes a lot of money. Of course, there are a few film stars, pop stars and television personalities who make millions of pounds every time they open their mouths. There are also a few famous film directors who make a lot of money telling actors and actresses how to speak and where to stand. Some of the best stunt men and women arealso well-paid for jumping out of moving cars and off high buildings, and for all the other dangerous things that they have to do. However, there are also thousands and thousands of actors, actresses and singers who find it very difficult to get work acting and singing. Then, when they do find work, most of them earn very little money.23It is clear from this and much other evidence that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes-----money, social respectability. And interesting jobs, which higher education gives. It is clear too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social circumstances. Their parents often need the extra money another wage-owner can bring in; they do not value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, "It's up to you".24Education not only raises the quality of manpower, but also gives people hope for the future. To assure people's rights at the basic level is important not only in the political sense but also in the economic sense. To give everyone a chance to develop his personality which is realized only by education, is effective to activate society. Therefore the establishment of a compulsory education institution is the first urgent task of every developing country.。

They want to bring water to the deserts, so that people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. Even so, more and more of the earth is becoming deserts all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the deserts in time. Why is more and more land becoming deserts? Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth. Some places on the earth do not get very much rain. Yet, they still do not become deserts. This is because there are some green plants growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants help keep water in the earth. Plants do not let the wind blow the dirt away. When a little bit of rain falls, the plants hold water. Without plants, the land can becomea desert much more easily.A man decides to make a farm in a very dry place. He cuts down the trees. He digs in the earth and takes away the grass and plants that are already growing on the dry land. He makes a farm. He puts plants in rows. The sun is very hot. It makes the land even drier. When the rain comes, it runs between the rows of plants. It washes the good dirt away. When the wind comes, it blows between the rows of plants. It blows the good dirt away.Soon the land is not good enough for a farm any more. The man lets his animals eat all the plants on it. Now the land does not have any plants on it. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the littl e boy.“If you must know, I make $20.00 an hour.”“Oh,” the little boy replied, head bowed. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I borrow $10.00 please?”The father was furious. “If the only reason you wanted to know how much money I make is just so you can borrow some to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed.Think about why you’re being so selfish. I work long, hard hours every day and don’t have time for such childish games.”The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even madder about the little boy’s questioning. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money. After an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think he may have been a little hard on his son. Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10.00, and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked.“No daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy.“I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It’s been a long day and I took my aggravation out on you. Here’s that $10.00 you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, beaming.“Oh, thank you daddy!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled outsome more crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at the man. “Why did yo u want more money if you already had some?” the father grumbled.“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied. “Daddy, I have $20.00 now. People’s feet move when they dance. They keep on moving until the music stops.People have enjoyed dancing for a very long time. This story is of a different kind of dance. It is a dance without people or music. Yet this dance is one of the oldest in the world. It is the dance of bees.If you have ever watched bees, you know that they are very clever. They also work hard looking for food and bringing it back to their home. The home of bees is called a bee-hive. Here hundreds —even thousands —of bees live. They work day and night building small walls of wax. Here they make their honey. This is the same honey that we eat.Where does the honey come from? Bees live on food from flowers. Have you ever seen bees flying around a flower garden? When a bee rests on a flower, it tries to go to the center of it. There it takes in as much food as its body can hold. Then it carries the food back to the hive.At the hive, bees change this flower food into honey. Then they fly away for more food. How do bees know where to find the best food in the sweetest flowers? One bee acts as a guide. When it discovers good flowers, it flies back to the hive to tell the others. It does this by dancing for them. The bee dances on one side. This tells the other bees which way to go to find the flowers, but that is not all. The bee dances for some time, and the length of its dance tells the other bees how far they must fly to reach the flowers. When the other bees see the dance, they know where the flowers are. They fly away and return with more food for the hive.Sometimes we hear the music of bees as they fly around, but few people have ever seen them dance. We can learn a lot about what a person is thinking by watching his or her body language. Words are important, but the way a person stands, folds his or her arms, or moves his or her hands can also give us information about his or her feelings.Just like spoken language, body language varies from culture to culture. Making eye contact –looking directly into someone’s eyes –is in some counties a way to show interest. In other countries, however, eye contact is rude or disrespectful. The gesture of OK, making a circle with one’s thumb and index finger, has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, someone who sees another person making the gesture will think it means money. In France, a person seeing the same gesture will think it means zero. In Brazil and Germany, however, the gesture is rude. The thumbs-up gesture, meaning “great” or “good job” in the US, is rude in Nigeria, but in Germany and Japan it means the number one. The “crazy” gesture, moving the index finger in a circle in front of the ear, means “you have a phone call” in Brazil. While there are many different interpretations of our body language, some gestures seem to be universal. A good way of saying “I am full” is moving the hand in circles over the stomach after a meal. If a person pats his or her stomach before a meal, it usually means “I am hungry”.Perhaps the best example of universally understood body language is the smile. A smile can help us get through difficult situations and find friends in a world of strangers. A smile can open doors and tear down walls. It can be used to express almost any emotion. We can use a smile to apologize, to greet someone, to ask for help or to start a conversation. We can smile at ourselves inthe mirror to make ourselves feel happier and stronger. And if we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than to see the smiling face of a good friend.D31. We can get information about a person’s feelings from ________.A. his wordsB. the way he standsC. the way he folds his arms or move his handsD. both his words and his body languageD32. Eye contact ________.A. is a way to show interestB. is rude or disrespectfulC. has the same meaning in all the countriesD. has different meanings in different culturesA33. The gesture for OK, making a circle with one’s thumb and index finger, ________.A. has different meanings in different culturesB. means money in JapanC. means zero in FranceD. all of the above(8)A patient came to see me about the stress in her life. She described all the things she had to do – one was to make her bed – from the moment she woke up till she flew out the door for work.I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks. Two weeks later she breezed into my office beaming. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42 years –and nothing bad had happened. “And you know what,”she said, “I don’t dry my dishes any more, either.”This woman had made two major breakthroughs. One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was giving herself permission to be less than perfect. It was a watershed experience. This story illustrates an important principle about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade-offs. The problem is that many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves. They put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own. That’s fine if it’s occasional. It would even be okay if there was a balance. But most people living that way are wearing themselves out, feeling out of control. They stop exercising or start skipping meals; next they steal time from their sleep. Soon they get too busy to see friends; they stop reading or playing balls, and six months go by without a long walk. That’s not a great way to live. Fortunately, life doesn’t have to be like that.So what is the solution? In a word, prioritize. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, adequate sleep and time with your family. Exercise, leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life. The point is to do something for yourself every day. The choice is yours: Whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Take time to play the piano. Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. In short, fill more of your time with want-to-dos instead of have-to-dos.Add your name to the list of people you’re trying to make happy. Not “me first” or “me only” but “me, too.” Balance is the goal. Permission is the key. And the time to start is now.A36. What was the woman’s problem?A. She felt stress in her life.B. She had difficulty falling asleep.。

When a little bit ofrain falls, the plants hold water. What makes you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.“I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the littl e boy.“If you must know, I make $20.00 an hour.”“Oh,” the little bo y replied, head bowed. I work long, hard hours every day anddon’t have time for such childish games.”The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. Here’s that$10.00 you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, beaming.“Oh, thank you daddy!” he yelled. Yet without that dance we might never have sweet honey to eat.A 21.According to the passage, peop le don’t s top dancing until ________.A. the music stopsB. they are very tiredC. they want to go to bed。
