From the tone of his voice and the expression on his face, it's obvious he's enjoying this moment. He says, "Honey, I've got a surprise for you. I know we've been married for 20 years, but I want a divorce."The wife says nothing, but slowly increases the speed to 70 mph.He then says, "I don't want you to try to talk me out of it because I don't love you any more."Again the wife stays quiet, but speeds up as her rage increases."I want the house," he insists, pressing his luck. The wife speeds up to 80 mph.He says, "I want the car, too," but she just drives faster and faster.By now she's up to 90 mph."All right," the man says, "I want the bank accounts, and all the creditcards, too."The wife slowly starts to veer toward a bridge. This makes him a bit nervous, so he says, "Isn't there anything you want?" The wife says, "No, I've got everything I need.""Oh, really," he says, "So what have you got?"Seconds before they slam into the bridge at a speed of 100 mph, the wife smiles and says, "The airbag."Some people think single parents can never remarry happily, but I disagree. They have to learn the art of blending. A happy remarriage is possible with preparation, patience and prayer. Here are some tips for you.Firstly, slow down. Do not rush your children into trying to like someone.A person you're dating should not even be introduced to your children unless you are sure he or she can get along well with your kids. Your children won't understand the concept of "we're just friends", so they will see every date as a potential replacement for mom or dad.Secondly, you should seek advice. Talk to your close friends or a psychiatrist. After listening to their advice, you may see some new light and act in a more sensible way.Thirdly, you should expect difficulties. Understand that your children have the dream of reuniting their original family. They must be sad about their losses. Surprisingly, older children need even more time to overcome their sadness than younger children. Just as it takes time to heal, it also takes time to build and rebuild relationships. Although you'd expect that most readjustments would need to be made by the stepparent, the biological parent has adjustments of his or her own, including issues of authority within the new household as well as communication with the other parent. Finally, proceed with caution. Although it is not impossible to have a happy and satisfying stepfamily, you should know that there will be some difficult days ahead. Don't impose friendship on the kids who are not yet ready toaccept it.。

Also (S2) known as a virtual business, the SOHO has not evolved beyond the idea of an (S3) independent business person who has a few support stall members. Business (S4)enterprises that are large are often called Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. Before the19th century and the (S5)spread of the industrial revolution around the globe, (S6) nearly all offices were small offices or home offices, with only a few exceptions. Most businesses were small, and (S7) so was the amount of paperwork that went with their business activities. At the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, the term ―Small or Home Office‖ and (S8) the acronym SOHO have been used t to great extent by companies that sell products to large number of small business with a small-sized office. Some products are often designed specifically for the SOHO market. (S9) Many books are written and sold specifically for this type of office to tell people how to equip a small office.Nowadays many consultants, lawyers, and real estate agents in small and medium- sized towns operate from such home offices.(S10) In the field of software development, engineers often have to work 20 hours or more at a stretch, so they can hardly adapt to normal office hours. They often work in small offices to have more freedom.Task3: The Role of Job DescriptionsScriptPeople who don’t understand what their employers expect them to do may be headed for one of the most common and yet most avoidable career traps. If your boss doesn’t take the time to explain properly what you are expected to do in your position. Then keep asking questions until you know precisely what it is. Don’t limit your questions to matter of everyday routine. Lee Colby, a management consultant based in Minneapolis, offers his advice. He says you can ask more significant questions like,―What a re our departmwnt’s goals? How does my work fit in with the overall objective of the company?‖That method helped Lisa James, an assistant manager at an electronics company. When James was transferred to a new department seven years ago, she found herself not only working for the manager of quality control, but assisting three other managers. Because the job was both demanding and ill-defined, James had to put in ten-hour days as well as take work home. To clarify what was expected of her and what she hoped to get from her job in terms of career department, she drafted a list of goals in collaboration with her principal boss. The list proved so well though out that her boss used it as the basis for her annual performance reviews. Shortly afterwards, she was given a raise for her efficient work.If your boss is vague about what your goals should be, try this technique suggested by Atkin Simon, director of a Boston-based management-consulting firm: Read your position description, which most large firms provide, and identify the two or three most important tasks it mentions. Then meet with your boss, point out the tasks you’ve chosen and ask if they accurately reflect what your boss considers important.1.If your boss does not describe your job responsibility clearly, what can you do?2.What kind of questions can you ask about your job?3.When James was transferred to a new department, how many managers did shehave to work for?4.With whom did James draft a list of goals?5. Great! Thanks. Bye.V. Let’s TalkScriptLillian: Mr. Baxter, you have worked in the company for five years, and you manage everything here smoothly, like a clock. Could you tell us the secret of your successful career?Baxter: Just as the golden rule of real estate is location, location, location, the golden rule of work is relationships, relationships, relationships. Unfortunately, many workers focus so hard on the job at hand that they never develop useful relationships with people in other parts of their organization. Worse, when they do interact with colleagues in other departments, they may not treat then with respect.Lillian: Could you give more details?Baxter: Let’s take Wendy as an example. She switched jobs several months ago in the company. In her first position, as a marketing manager, she frequently found herself in conflict with the financial department over her staff’s expenses. Her argument for more funds usually ended in vain. Then in her new job as training administrator, she wanted to launch an on-the-job training project. She needed the financial department to support her request for a budget. How did she convince them this time?Although the financial department’s offices were located in another city, Wendy decided to visit them in their offices and try to establish closer relationships. She believed she must first of all understand their mission and their own training needs. Then she found an ally in the company’s chief financial officer, who saw how her group could help develop his staff. So the two forged a long-tern=m alliance, which led to a training program so successful that it has since been picked up by the company’s offices in Germany and Japan.Winning allies throughout your organization has an additional benefit. These days, it’s far too risky to expect your work to speak for itself. Having allies who speak well of you increases your reputation with the top management.VI. Further Listening and SpeakingTask1: A small misstep can become a big career trap.ScriptGeorge Adams, a market researcher at a Midwestern firm, finally printed his marketing report. After months of research, hundreds of surveys, and several boring drafts, his report was complete, and just in time. He was going away for the weekend, and he wanted to relax knowing his report was a success. He carefully proofread his document and then delivered copies to all the executives on his distribution list. When he returned to his desk, he discovered his boss, the department manager, was livid. At first he did not realize he had accidentally gone over his head. Anyway, she had given him the contribution list in the first place. So he thought he was just following orders. But the boss was furious that she hadn’t seen the final document. The boss asked Adams to get back the copies, but it was too late. When Adams got to the CEO’s office, he was already reading the report.Adams had felt friction with his boss before. She was overbearing and tended to find fault with his work after he’d broken his back to meet deadlines. In this instance, however, he realized he had made a serious error. His boss was extremely upset, for his mistake made her look as though she wasn’t in control of her department. From the boss’s point of view, Adams was usurping her authority. The result was simple and natural: Adams left his job soon afterward.Adams’s story illustrates a fundamental truth about the workplace: small, seemingly innocent missteps can sometimes become a big career trap.1.To whom did Adams deliver copies of the report?2.What did Adams discover after he delivered the copies?3.What happened when the boss asked Adams to get back the copies of the report?4.According to the passage, why was his boss extremely upset?5. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?Keys: 1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.CTask 2: The boss is angry!ScriptSam: Tell me: Does this place look like a nursing home?Sally: No. Why?Sam: Do I look like a male nurse?Sally: Not at all.Sam: Then why do my employees act as though this were a nursing home instead of a work place?Sally: You’re obviously upset. What’s wrong? Tell me.Sam: You’re right. I’m upset about a lot of things.Sally: Can you tell me what the problems are?Sam: First of all I’m upset because so many of the staff have been showing up late for work.Sally: It’s true. A lot of people have been coming in late. They probably think you don’t mind. You know there’s a pretty relaxed atmosphere here.Sam: Maybe it’s because I hang out with a lot of them outside the office.Sally: They must see you more as a buddy than a boss. It’s because you’re so friendly. Sam: You’re right. They don’t view me as an authority figure anymore. I’m afraid they don’t respect me as a bossSally: So what are you going to do about it?Sam: I’m going to change. No more Mr. Nice Guy. I’m going to start cracking the whip.Sally: When do you want this change to take place?Sam: Starting today, I’m going to lay down the law. From now on, everyone in the company must follow regulations to the latter.Sally: I’ll post a notice as soon as possible. What should it say?Sam: No more punching in late. No more clocking out early. No more calling in sick without a goof reason or without a doctor’s note.Sally: Anything else?Sam: No more personal phone calls or e-mails on company time!Sally: All right, I’ll get right on it!Keys: FTFTFTask3: Three EnvelopesScriptAfter a high –level firing at Supertech, the top executives gathered for lunch to welcome the new Chief Executive Officer, Carl Martin, and say good-bye to the departing CEO, Dick Jackson.Lunch was pretty well over when Jackson took his replacement aside and said: ―Carl, it’s a jungle out there in the business world. If we graduate of Harvard Business School don’t stick up for one anther, who will? Nobody, that’s who.‖Jackson explained that a tradition the company’s CEOs had. The departing CEO left three numbered envelopes for the new CEO. He handed Martin three envelopes. ―Open one if there’s a problem you can’t solve.‖Things went smoothly for Martin at first, but six months later sales took a downturn, and he was catching a lot of heat. At his wit’s end, he remembered the envelopes. He took from his desk the first envelope. The message read, ―Blame your predecessor.‖Martin held a press conference and tactfully laid the blame at the feet of the previous CEO. The press—and Wall Street—reacted positively, sales picked up, and the problem was soon behind him.A year later, the company was again experiencing a dip in sales, combined with serious product problems. The CEO opened the second envelope. The message read, ―Recognize.‖This he did, and the company quickly rebounded. After several consecutive profitable quarters, the company once again fell on difficult times. The CEO went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope. The meager read, ―Prepare three envelopes.‖For Reference1.They gathered for lunch to welcome the new Chief Executive Officer, Carl Martin, and say good-bye to the departing CEO, Dick Jackson.2.The departing CEO left three numbered envelopes for the new CEO3.The message read, ―Blame your predecessor.‖So, the new CEO held a pressconference and tactfully laid the blame at the feet of the previous CEO.4.The message read, ―Recognize.‖ The new CEO did it, and the company quicklyrebounded.5. The meager said, ―Prepare three envelopes.‖ It implied that it was time for Martin to leave and give three similar envelopes to the next CEO.News ReportA Wearable TranslatorScriptThe inability to communicate in a foreign language is a problem that many international travelers face. But now, a Minnesota company is developing a system that would make this a problem of the past.Minneapolis-based Via is the company behind the ―Mobile Language Translation System‖, or MLTS. But they are not the only company trying to develop real-time computer translation. IBM is promoting a new high-speed text translation system, and NEC is working on software that provides rapid voice translations from English to Japanese and vice versa. But Via CEO Ed McConaghay says that the biggest difficulty in developing MLTS hs been to combine existing technology with bidirectional capability and portable packaging.[SOUND BITE]A translator demonstrates just how MLTS works. The translations take about five seconds and are not always perfect. However, the text translation on the screen can help users get the general idea of a conversation. [SOUND BITE]In the future, MLTS may be able to assist military personnel in communicating with foreign language speakers in the field. This system may also be of help to border patrol officers, airport personnel, and local law enforcement.Eventually, though, the device will be available to travelers or anyone in the general public who would like to communicate with a foreign friend.。

It is a holiday of love and romance usually by exchanging valentines or love tokens between lovers. There are different origins regarding the festival. One legend goes that the Romans put a priest named Saint Valentine into prison for refusing to believe in the Roman gods. On February 14, Valentine was put to death not only because he was Christian, but also because he had cured the jailer's daughter of blindness. The night before he was executed he wrote her a farewell letter signed "From your Valentine". Later, February 14 became a holiday for people to show affection for their loved ones. Today, people celebrate Valentine's Day in different ways, sending greeting cards and flowers, giving chocolate or other gifts, or joining in romantic dinners. The holiday has now become popular all over the world. In China the festival is also becoming increasingly popular with young people.美洲和欧洲各国都会庆祝2月14日的情人节。

Unit fourComprehension of the Text1. Because they suffered from low wages and oppressive working conditions.2. To the first generation of immigrants, work had great virtues. First of all, it ensured their own survival. Secondly, it made it possible for them to provide a better life and education for their children, which meantan improvement in their social status. Last but not least, it was the very hard work that gave their labors a fierce dignity, which served as a driving force in their own life.3. Generally speaking, it's because the way people view work is much changed. Specifically, there are four causes. The first is that today's younger workers have little idea about the poverty and suffering of the Depression and, therefore, don't know what work meant to those who survived the Depression. The second cause is that unemployment no longer means personal ruin and shame thanks to elaborate financial cushions. Thirdly, the loss of a job now carries less personal shame, as it can be blamed on the wild and notorious behavior of the economy. And finally, work no longer just serves as a means of existence in a society where expectations are getting higher with rising educational levels.4. To explain the attitude to work of those who suffered the extreme poverty during the Depression, and to contrast this with the attitudes of today's younger workers.5. According to Maslow, work meets human needs in the following hierarchy: first, it provides such basic means as food and shelter; second, it can provide security; third, it satisfies the need for friendship and connection with others; fourth, it can help gain respect; and finally, it can satisfy the desire forself-fulfillment.6. Maslow's scheme is quoted to explain workers' expectations change with social andeconomic development. Because of these changes, work has different meanings to different groups insociety as they are positioned at different stages in the work hierarchy.7. The women's rights movement has made it possible for women to pursue careers, not just work for mere survival. That is to say, they are working at the level of "fulfilling themselves", which is the highest in Maslow's work hierarchy.8. Conditions for some US workers, such as those on assembly lines, may be considered terrible. However, the medieval workers suffered much more misery than those working on the modern assembly line. A poor Indian rubbish collector lives a more miserable life than a "poor" American car worker. The average peasantin South America works harder than most ofAmericans.9. The author is cautioning that it is important to have a proper sense of perspective about work, before making judgments on particular situations.10. Work is the most thorough and profound organizing principle in American life in that it helps people connect with others in a work community and, therefore, satisfy their need for friendship and social relations.V ocabulary1. esteemed2. stunned3. notorious4. conferred5. aspiration6. diluted7. hierarchy8. foremost9. asserted 10. arrogant 11. dreadful 12. recyclingExercises on CD and web course only: 13. intrinsic 14. destructive 15. gossiping1. wind up2. merge with3. dying off4. laid off5. closed down6. degenerated into7. in effect8. apart from海之子论坛、中国海洋大学贴吧专用119. irrespective of 10. prone to11. takes a certain amount of people's interest out of 12.kicked aroundExercises on CD and web course only: 13. conferred upon 14. in much the same way that 15.concentrated uponColocationI. stories 2. messages 3, weight 4. meanings5. honor6. disease7. electricity 8, traditionExercises on CD and web course only: 9. interest 10. oxygenTranslationI. Those who lead a miserable life often fail to recognize the inherent virtue of work in earning and sustaining their dignity.2. With the life bettered and levels of education higher, the work ethic is diluted now.3. The young generation has much difficulty understanding why their ancestors had to focus their minds upon work as the central concern of existence.4. According to Maslow, different classes and ethnic groups are positioned at different stages in the work hierarchy.5. In developing countries, many talented young intellectuals flock in droves to America, which forms theso-called "brain drain".6. If a country is prone to high inflation, then its currency will have to be devalued to maintain the price competitiveness of its exports.7. One expert in sociology believes that work is a means for people to build relationships. In that sense, the workplace performs the function of a community.8. The desire to "fulfill themselves", a harmless and even worthy enterprise, may sometimes degenerate into a selfish discontent.9. To most Americans today, the blow of being laid off seldom carries the life-and-death implications it once had.10. Modem workers may have a lot of complaints. But they will feel better when they know that their predecessors did work under a far more brutal condition during the early stage of the Industrial Revolution.Work is not only a means of sustaining life. More importantly, it is the way through which people displaytheir talent, realize their ambitions, build relationships and establish social status. If you understand thisintrinsic value of work, then however dull or hard work may be, it becomes bearable if it helps build up a reputation, whether in the world at large or only in one's own circle. Updating one's aim is one of the most essential elements of self-fulfillment in the long run, and for most people this comes chiefly through their work.In that sense, work is the most vigorous, vivid sign of life --in individuals and in civilizations.1.对于那些勉强维持生活的人来说,劳动有其固有价值这一观点显得荒唐可笑。

From 1 a.m.to 7 a.m., shop lights are being turned off, and lights inside office buildings must beextinguished within an hour of workers leaving the premises. The lighting on France’sbuilding facades (正面) cannot be turned on before sunset. Over the next two years, regulations restricting lighting on billboards will go into effect. These rules aredesigned to eventually cut carbon dioxide emissions by 250,000 tons per year, savethe equivalent of the annual energy consumption of 750,000 households, and reducethe country’s overall energy bill by 200 million Euros ($266 million).B) But no less a moti vation, says France’s Environment Ministry, is to “reduce the print of artificial lighting on the nocturnal (夜间的) environment” – a powerful acknowledgement that excessive use of lighting in many parts of the world is endangering our health and the health of the ecosystems on which we rely. The good news, however, is that light pollution is readily within our grasp to control.C) Until recently, efforts to restrain our use of light have been primarily in response to the serious light pollution erasing starry nights. But researchers are increasingly focusing on the impacts of so-called ecological light pollution, warning that disrupting these natural patterns of light and dark, and thus the structures and functions of ecosystems, is having profound impacts.D) The problem is worsening as India, Brazil, and numerous other countries are becoming increasingly affluent and urbanized. Satellite views of the earth at night show vast areas of North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia glowing white, with only the world’s remotest regions –Siberia, the Tibetan plateau, the Sahara Desert, the Amazon, and the Australian outback –still hidden in darkness. Some countries, such as Britain, and some US states –including Connecticut and California – have enacted regulations to reduce light pollution, but most nations and cities still do little to dial down the excessive use of light.E) Technological advances such as LEDs, or light-emitting diodes (二极管), can improve our ability to reduce and better regulate lighting, but these same new lights may actually make things worse because they contain heavy doses of a “blue-rich” white light that is especially disruptive to circadian (昼夜的) rhythms.F) Scientists are investigating new ways to provide society with the lighting it demands for security, commerce, and aesthetics, while greatly reducing the flood of light that is increasingly interfering with human health and the ability of many creatures to function. One research group funded by the German government –Verlust der Nacht, or Loss of Night –is coordinating numerous studies on light pollution, ranging from research into the socio-political challenges of cutting light pollution in the Berlin metropolitan area to the effects of light pollution on nocturnal mammals.G) Every flip of a light switch contributes to altering ancient patterns of mating, migration, and feeding, with no time for species to adapt. On the Caribbean island of Tobago, a 2012 study of leatherback turtles – a species that has been on earth for 150 million years –found that “artificial lighting of the nesting beaches is the biggest threat to survival of newly-hatched turtles and a major factor in declining leatherback turtle populations.” Evolved to follow the reflected light of the stars a nd moon from the beach to the ocean, baby turtles now instead follow the light of hotels andstreetlights, with the result that they die of dehydration (脱水), are eaten by predators, or run over by cars.H) Many migrating birds, drawn off-course by artificial light, join the breathtaking number –between 100 million and one billion, we don’t really know – killed each year by collision with human-made structures. Recent studies show that for bats – whose natural pest control benefits US agriculture alone by billions of dollars annually, according to a 2011 study in Science– artificial light disrupts patterns of travel and feeding since many bat species avoid illuminated areas. Recent articles on a menagerie of species reflect a new awareness of artificial l ight’s effects on ecology.I) Of course, “humans are animals as well,” explains Steven Lockley of Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine, “and so when light / dark cycles mess up seasonal patterns of trees or breeding cycles of amphibians (两栖动物), there’s no reason to think it’s not doing the same to us.”J) As recently as 1980, humans were thought to be immune to the effects of artificial light at night. But continuing research has shown that nocturnal light disrupts our sleep, confuses our circadian rhythms –those 24-hour biological processes that regulate our body’s functions –and impedes the production of the hormone melatonin at much lower levels than previously thought possible.K) Researchers and dark-sky advocates are seeking to reduce the harmful effects of new lighting technologies and devise solutions to the flood of light that erases the night in many parts of the world. The International Dark-Sky Association and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America have together designed the Model Lighting Ordinance, which communities of any size can adopt. The MLO recommends limits for the amount of light in five different zones of lighting intensity. The regulation also recommends banning unshielded lighting in all zones.L) In the Journal of Applied Ecology, researchers have identified numerous practical steps to reduce light pollution: changing the spectral (光谱的) composition of lighting (especially LEDs), limiting the duration of lighting, reducing the “trespass” of lighti ng into areas not intended to be lit, altering the intensity of lighting, and preventing areas from being artificially lit in the first place.M) The relatively simple act of shielding our lights –installing or retrofitting lamp fixtures (固定装置) that direct light downward to its intended target – represents our best chance to control light pollution. While we seldom leave our interior lights bare, most of our outdoor lighting remains unshielded, sending light straight into the sky, into our eyes, into our neighbors’ bedrooms. Until recently, consumers had fewbuying choices, but that is changing. Companies such as Lowe’s, the home-improvement chain, now offer lines of shielded lighting fixtures. Street lighting, stadium lighting, parking lot and gas station lighting – all can be shielded.N) The objection will be that we need all this light for safety and security, with the justification that light equals safety, and darkness danger. This common belief goes far to explain why many gas stations and parking lots are lit more than 10 times as brightly as they were just 20 years ago, and why light pollution continues to grow at up to 20 percent per year, depending on the region. In fact, the issue of light at night and safety is complex, with little convincing evidence to support common assumptions. For example, ever-brighter lights can actually diminish security by casting glare that impedes our vision and creates shadows where criminals can hide.O) Experts say it is far more important to use light effectively than abundantly.Explaining France’s new lighting rules, Delphine Batho, until recently France’s environment minister, described the government’s desire to “change the culture” to include responsible use of light. This change is to be applauded, for what increasing numbers of studies – as well as our own eyes – tell us is that we are using far more light than we need, and at tremendous cost.11)Some organizations that support dark sky have come up with suggestions on how to reduce the damaging effects of lighting. K12)Research done in 2012 has shown that the survival of one type of turtle species is now threatened by artificial light. G13)The French government has implemented new lighting rules recently to protect the environment and save energy use. A14)A comparatively easy way to reduce light pollution is to have lights outside buildingsshielded. M15)The patterns of travel and feeding of many migrating birds have also been disturbed by artificial light. H16)Prosperity and urbanization of many countries have made the ecological lightpollution severer. D17)In the last few decades, studies have revealed the negative effects of nocturnal lighton humans. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question.Creativity has been considered in terms of process, product or person and has beendefined as the interpersonal and intrapersonal process by means of which original, high quality, and genuinely significant products are developed. In dealing with youngchildren, the focus should be on the process, i.e., developing and generating originalideas, which is seen as the basis of creative potential. For a proper understanding of children’s creativity, one must distinguish creativityfrom intelligence and talent. Some experts expressed concern about whethercreativity in young children could be differentiated from other cognitive abilities. Morerecent studies have shown that components of creative potential can indeed bedistinguished from intelligence. The term “gifted” is often used to imply high intelligence. But some scientists have argued that intelligence and creativity are independent of each other, and a highly creative child may or may not be highly intelligent.Creativity goes beyond possession and use of artistic or musical talent. In this context, “talent” refers to the possession of a high degree of technical skill in a specialized area. Thus an artist may have wonderful technical skills, but may not succeed in evoking the emotional response that makes the viewer feel that a painting, for example, is unique. It is important to keep in mind that creativity is evidenced not only in music or art, but throughout the curriculum, in science, social studies and other areas. Most measures of children’s creativity have focused on ideational (构思的) fluency.Ideational fluency tasks require children to generate as many responses as they can to a particular stimulus, as is done in brainstorming. Ideational fluency is generally considered to be a critical feature of the creative process. For young children, the focus of creativity should remain on process: the generation of ideas. Adult acceptance of multiple ideas in a non-evaluative atmosphere will help children generate more ideas or move to the next stage of self-evaluation. As children develop the ability for self-evaluation, issues of quality and the generation of products become more important. The emphasis at this age should be on self-evaluation, for these children are exploring their abilities to generate and evaluate hypotheses, and revise their ideas based on that evaluation.21)What should be paid attention to in terms of young children’s creativity development?22)The main purpose of Paragraph 2 is to _________.23)How can an artist make the viewers feel that he is creative?24)What ability does “ideational fluency” (Para. 4) refer to?25)How should adults induce creativity in children?A. By teaching children to be able to evaluate their own ideas.B. By responding tochildren’s ideas in a non-judgmental way.C. By reminding children of the importance of others’ evaluations.D. By asking children to correct their ideas whenever they are wrong.参考答案:21) B 22) C 23) D 24) A 25) B∧收起解析Don’t ask whether the proposed $3 billion merger (兼并) of United Airlines and Continental will benefit you. It won’t. Because this isn’t about you. It’s about them.Specifically, it’s about the need for the airlines to raise fares and increase revenues after years of unreasonable discounting that led to billions in losses. “For the airlines, it’s a good thing,” says Matthew Smith, an airline analyst (分析师) at Majestic Research. “By not having as much supply, they can fly fuller planes, charge higher prices and operate more efficiently. For the customers, well, I don’t think they’re going to see planes that are only two-thirds full or bargain – basement prices from airlines desperate to fill seats.” In a joint press release, the new company promised “strong competitive pressure on fares,” but in reality that pressure has been coming from budget carriers such as Southwest and JetBlue. Those of us in the back of the bus may have to worry about employees who have lost some seniority (老资格) in a joined workforce. Labor issues might be a problem, says Perkins, contributing editor of . He remembers the strike of 1985 in United Airlines. “If and when they start making money,” says Perkins, “those unions could turn around and say, ‘We gave it up when you needed it. Where’s our share? ’” The potential for a strike worries him, si nce the new united company will hold 21 percent of the market and finding a replacement seat in the event of a strikecould be next to impossible. As for fares, there’s no place to go but up. After Delta merged with Northwest, fares on their combined routes rose at least 10 percent, according to George Hobica, founder of . But that’s no reason to panic. “The vast majority of leisure travel is optional,” he says. “When airlines raise fares, people stop flying. ScriptGeorge Adams, a market researcher at a Midwestern firm, finally printed his marketing report. When Adams got to the CEO’s office, he was already reading the report. Adams had felt friction with his boss before. The result was simple and natural: Adams left his job soon afterward. Adams’s story illustrates a fundamental truth about the workplace: small, seemingly innocent missteps can sometimes become a big career trap.13. To whom did Adams deliver copies of the report?14. What did Adams discover after he delivered the copies?15. What happened when the boss asked Adams to get back the copies ofthe report?16. According to the passage, why was his boss extremely upset?5. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?K eys: 1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.CTask 2: The boss is angry!ScriptSam: Tell me: Does this place look like a nursing home?Sally: No. It’s because you’re so friendly.Sam: You’re right. What should it say? Sam: No more punching in late. No more clocking out early. No more calling in sick without a goof reason or without a doctor’s note. Sally: Anything else?Sam: No more personal phone calls or e-mails on company time!Sally: All right, I’ll get right on it!K eys: FTFTFTask3: Three EnvelopesScriptAfter a high –level firing at Supertech, the top executives gathered for lunch to welcome the new Chief Executive Officer, Carl Martin, and say good-bye to the departing CEO, Dick Jackson.Lunch was pretty well over when Jackson took his replacement aside and said: “Carl, it’s a jungle out there in the business world. If we graduate of Harvard Business School don’t stick up for one anther, who will? Nobody, that’s who.”Jackson explained that a tradition the company’s CEOs had. The departing CEO left three numbered envelopes for the new CEO. He handed Martin three envelopes. “Open one if there’s a problem you can’t solve.”Things went smoothly for Martin at first, but six months later sales took a downturn, and he was catching a lot of heat. At his wit’s end, he remembered the envelopes. He took from his desk the first envelope. The message read, “Blame your predecessor.”Martin held a press conference and tactfully laid the blame at the feet of the previous CEO. The press—and Wall Street—reacted positively, sales picked up, and the problem was soon behind him.A year later, the company was again experiencing a dip in sales, combined with serious product problems. The CEO opened the second envelope. The message read, “Recognize.”This he did, and the company quickly rebounded. After several consecutive profitable quarters, the company once again fell on difficult times. The CEO went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope. The meager read, “Prepare three envelopes.”For Reference1.

Zheng He was the most famous maritime explorer in Chinese history. In 1405 AD, the ruler of the Ming Dynasty sent Zheng He on a voyage to the Western Seas in order to strengthen border defense and develop trade by sea. In the following 28 years, Zheng He led his fleet, made seven voyages to the Western Seas with over 100,000 crew members in total and visited more than 30 countries and regions. The fleet traveled far into South Asia and West Asia, and made all the way to the continent of Africa. Zheng He’s voyages to the Western Seas were a great feat in the world's navigation history.
