Reading Comprehension (20%)Read the following passages and mark the best answer to each of the following questions.Passage OneA wise man once said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. So, as a police officer, I have some urgent things to say to good people.Day after day my men and I struggle to hold back a tidal wave of crime. Something has gone terribly wrong with our once-proud American way of life. It has happened in the area of values. A key ingredient is disappearing and I think I know what it is: accountability.Accountability isn’t hard to define. It means that every person is responsible for his or her actions and liable for their consequences.Of the many values that hold civilization together——honesty, kindness, and so on——accountability may be the most important of all. Without it, there can be no respect, no trust, no law——and, ultimately, no society. My job as a police officer is to impose accountability on people who refuse, or have never learned, to impose it on themselves. But as every policeman knows, external controls on people’s behavior are far less effective than internal restraints such as sense of guilt, shame and embarrassment.Fortunately there are still communities——small towns, usually——where schools maintain disciplines and where parents hold up standards that proclaim: “In this family certain things are not tolerated——they simply are not done!”Yet more and more, especially in our larger cities and suburbs, these inner restraints are loosening. Your typical robber has none. He considers your property his property; he takes what he wants, including your life if you enrage him.The main cause of this breakdown is a radical shift in attitudes. Thirty years ago, if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now, in a shocking reversal, it’s the criminal who is considered victimized: by his under-privileged upbringing, by the school that didn’t teach him to read, by the church that failed to teach him with moral guidance, by the parents who didn’t provide a stable home. I don’t believe it. Many others in equally disadvantaged circumstances choose not to engage in criminal activities. If we free the criminal, even partly, from accountability, we become a society of endless excuses where no one accepts responsibility for anything. We in America desperately need more people who believe that the person who commits a crime is the one responsible for it.1.We can learn from the first paragraph that it isA.certain that evil will prevail if good men do nothing about it.B.Natural for virtue to defeat evilC.Unnecessary for good people to do anything in face of evilD.Desirable for good men to keep away from evil2.According to the author, if a person is found guilty of a crimeA.modern civilization is responsible for itB.the standards of living should be improvedC.the criminal himself should bear the blameD.society is to be held responsiblepared with those in small towns, people in large cities haveA. less self-disciplineB. less effective governmentC. more mutual respectD. better sense of discipline4.The writer is sorry to have noticed thatA.people in large cities tend to excuse criminalsB.today’s society lacks sympathy for people in difficulty.C.People in disadvantaged circumstances are engaged in criminal activities.D.People in small towns still stick to old disciplines and standards.5.What is the main idea of the passage?A.more good examples should be set for people to follow.B.Stricter discipline should be maintained in schools and families.C.More restrictions should be imposed on people’s behavior.D.It is necessary for more people to accept the value of responsibility in order to defeatevil.Passage TwoYou have to have lived in the 1950s and 1960s to have experienced a good economy. In the period between 1950 and 1970 it was the rule——rather than the exception ——that an ordinary family, without higher education, could sustain itself decently on the income of a single breadwinner. In 1955, when I was 19 and living in Brooklyn, N.Y., my father, who had a sixth-grade education, maintained our family of five on a wage of $82 a week as a bookbinder. My mother taught us fairness and compassion; my father, discipline and enterprise. The U.S. economy in those years are good. Then where did this good economy go? It was inflated away. The price of gold, which I take as a proxy for the prices of all goods, was $35 an ounce in those years. It is at roughly ten times that price today. There is another answer, though: inflation caused the entire work force to be moved into higher tax groups, thus reducing after-tax purchasing power. That is, my father’s bindery job in 1954 paid $82 a week, with $80 after deductions; today, at $820 per week the net would be $662.To ordinary people, the economy doesn’t look very good at all. After-tax incomes continue to decrease in purchasing power. The jobs offered in the employment ads pay only a little more than the minimum wage. Maybe $5 an hour, which, after payroll deductions, yields $4 an hour. Compare that with minimum wage jobs of the early 1950s, when 75 cents was worth today’s $7.50 before and after taxes.6.In the author’s opinion, a good economy, to ordinary people can be expressed in terms ofA. the amount of wageB. after-tax incomeC. the actual purchasing powerD. the minimum wage per hour7.The worsening of a bookbinder’s livelihood results fromA.his low education and the amount of wageB.the high-taxation and the income deductionsC.the high taxation and cost of livingD.the low wage and higher prices8.The passage implies that while the cost of living is getting higherA.the value of labor actually is shrinkingB.the minimum wage level is increasing likewiseC.the income tax rate is rising alongD.the employment ads naturally offer a higher minimum wage9.The author’s tone in writing the article isA. ironicalB. subjectiveC. high-soundingD. convincing10.The article aims toA.help control the rapidly increasing pricesB.give some advice to the policy-makerC.impress the younger generation with some basic factsD.call upon the society’s attention against inflationⅤ. Translation (20%)Translate the following into Chinese (12%)1.But the silence which hung about the place filled me with apprehension, and when we walkedin the back door which hung open, we saw people standing in the kitchen.2.He spoke abruptly so as to give the impression of a strength he did not possess.3.The old head lifted; two points of light quivered in the old eyes.4.Their budget, too, is small, for they are no longer permitted to undertake large projects.

(The seller,on the other hand....customer)4、磙轴的一端与一根立柱相连,使石磙可以绕立柱作旋转运动,另一端则套在一头蒙着眼罩的骆驼身上,通过骆驼不停地绕圈子走动来带动石磙旋转(The pole is attached..wheel)5、这套装置是由一个人操作的。

(And secondly,because........the crime)2、出人意料的是,刚到广岛车站时袭扰着我的那种异样的忧伤情绪竟在这时重新袭上心头,我的心情又难受起来,因为我又一次意识到自己置身于曾遭受第一颗原子弹轰击的现场。
