1. "The Legend of Jack-O-Lantern"Long ago, in a small village, there lived a mischievous man named Jack. Known for his sly tricks, Jack was notorious among the villagers. One fateful Halloween night, as Jack was roaming the village, he encountered the devil himself. Terrified, Jack convinced the devil to turn himself into a silver coin, promising to set him free in the morning.Seeing the opportunity, Jack quickly pocketed the coin and put it next to a silver cross, preventing the devil from returning to his original form. Jack made a deal with the devil that he would only set him free if the devil agreed never to claim his soul.Years passed, and Jack's wickedness continued to escalate. Upon his death, Jack found himself unable to enter heaven due to his sinful nature. Desperate, he went to the gates of hell, only to discover that the devil had held up his end of the bargain and refused to accept Jack's soul.Stranded between heaven and hell, Jack was left with only a burning coal, which he placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to act as a lantern. He became cursed to wander the earth for eternity, known as Jack of the Lantern, or Jack-O-Lantern.To this day, on Halloween night, people carve scary faces into pumpkins and place them outside their homes to ward off evil spirits, just as Jack once roamed the earth with his lantern.2. "The Haunted House"In a sleepy town on the outskirts of New England, there stood an old, abandoned house. Locals referred to it as "The Haunted House," as it was rumored to be inhabited by restless spirits. Legend had it that on every Halloween, the house came alive with eerie screams and mysterious lights.Curious and brave, a group of friends decided to explore the haunted house one Halloween night. Armed with flashlights and trembling with excitement, they cautiously entered the creaking front door. The air was heavy with a musty smell, and the sound of their footsteps echoed through the empty halls. As they ventured deeper into the house, they came across old portraits that seemed to follow their every move and dusty cobwebs that clung to their arms. Suddenly, a door slammed shut behind them, trapping them inside. Panic set in as they struggled to find an escape.Whispers echoed through the darkness, and ghostly apparitions appeared before their eyes. Their hearts pounded with fear, but they refused to let the spirits intimidate them. With courage, they called out for help and worked together to solve the house's mysteries. After what seemed like an eternity, they discovered a hidden passage that led them out of the haunted house. As they emerged into the moonlit night, they rejoiced at their survival and shared stories of their harrowing adventure. From that night on, the haunted house became a place of fascination, as thrill-seekers from far and wide dared to visit its eerie halls on Halloween. Though the spirits within may have scared many away, the friends carriedwith them a newfound bravery and a tale of their encounter with the supernatural.3. "The Witch's Potion"Deep in the heart of an enchanting forest, nestled between towering trees and secret glades, lived a wise old witch named Esmeralda. Known for her mysterious potions, many sought her guidance for supernatural remedies and magical elixirs. One Halloween night, a young boy named Ethan stumbled upon Esmeralda's cottage as he was lost in the woods. Intrigued by the whispers of her magical powers, he decided to enter her cottage and seek her help.Esmeralda welcomed Ethan with a warm smile and listened to his tale of being separated from his family. Determined to assist him, she brewed a special potion that would lead him back home. The ingredients she used were rare, collected from the depths of the forest and imbued with the essence of Halloween magic. As the potion simmered, the room filled with a mesmerizing aroma. Esmeralda cautioned Ethan about the dangers of the forest and the importance of appreciating the wonders of nature. She emphasized that despite her mystical powers, harmony with the natural world should always be nurtured.Taking a sip of the potion, Ethan felt his senses sharpen and a tingling warmth spread through his body. With newfound confidence, he bid farewell to Esmeralda and ventured back into the forest, guided by the magic of the potion. As he made his way through the forest, Ethan marveled at the beauty around him and developed a deep respect for nature's delicate balance. Finally, he came across a familiar path that led him back to his family, who had been anxiously searching for him.Grateful for Esmeralda's potion and the lessons she had taught him, Ethan realized the importance of connecting with nature and cherishing the wonders of the world. From that day forward, he vowed to protect the environment and spread awareness of its majestic powers to others. And so, the tale of Ethan and the witch's potion serves as a reminder of the magic that lies within the natural world and the lessons we can learn when we open our hearts to its enchantment.。

Robert Bridges - A School PortraitI had not visited Eton for many years, when one day passing from the Fellow’s Library into the Gallery I caught sight of the portrait of my school-friend Digby Dolben hanging just without the door among our most distinguished contemporaries. I was wholly arrested, and as I stood gazing on it, my companion asked me if I knew who it was. I was thinking that, beyond a few whom I could name, I must be almost the only person who would know. Far memories of my boyhood were crowding freshly upon me: he was standing again beside me in the eager promise of his youth; I could hear his voice; nothing of him was changed; while I, wrap from him in a confused mist of time, was wondering what he would think, could he know that at this actual moment he would have been dead thirty years, and that his memory would be thus preserved and honored in the beloved school, where his delicate spirit had been so strangely troubled. This portrait-gallery of old Etonians is very select: preeminent distinction of birth or merit may win you aplace there, or again official connection with the school, which right loves to keep up an unbroken panorama of its teachers, and to vivify its annals with the faces and figures of the personalities who carried on its traditions. But how came Dolben there? It was because he was a poet, --that I knew;--and yet his poems were not known they were jealously guarded by his family and a few friends: indeed such of his poems as could have come to the eyes of the authorities who sanctioned this memorial would not justify it. There was another reason; and the portrait bears its won credentials; for though you might not perhaps divine the poet in it, you can see the saint, the soul rapt in contemplation, the habit of stainless life, of devotion, of enthusiasm for high ideals. Such a being must have stood out conspicuously among his fellows; the facts of his life would have been the ground of the faith in his genius; and when his early death endeared and sanctified his memory, loving grief would generously grant him the laurels which he had never worn.

It was really nice, not one of those mass produced plastic things, it was made of wood and had intricate carvings all around its base, like moons and stars and other cosmic stuff, I don't really remember it that well except they were very detailed and looked hand carved. We didn't think much of it at the time because we were black widow hunting (not one of our smarter ideas, but it was a rush when we found one). I'd also like to say that we don't drink, do drugs, or anything that wouldmess with your mind like that. Day turned to night and we had given up our hunt and started playing X-Box. We got bored shortly after. So one of my friends decided to go the board.

Tom was so scared that he couldn't speak But then he gathered his courage and said, "I I was just trickortreating"The old woman laughed a creepy laugh and said, "Well, since you're here, I have a treat for you" She reached into a drawer and pulled out a strangelooking box She handed it to Tom and said, "Take this, but be careful"Tom took the box and thanked the old woman He quickly ran out of the house and met up with his friends They all went home, excited about their adventures and the mysterious boxWhen Tom got home, he opened the box Inside, there was a small golden key He had no idea was as if it had never existedTom was puzzled, but he kept the key as a reminder of his unforgettable Halloween adventure From that day on, every Halloween, Tom would think of that strange old woman and the mysterious keyYears passed, and Tom grew up One day, when he was cleaning out his old room, he found the key again He suddenly remembered the abandoned house and the old womanTom decided to do some research to try and find out more about the place He went to the local library and looked through old records and mapsAfter hours of searching, he finally found something It turned out that the discovered the hidden treasure It was a chest filled with gold coins and precious jewelsTom knew that this was a special gift from his Halloween adventure He used the treasure to help his family and the people in the town And every Halloween, he would tell the story of his adventure to the children, making their Halloween nights even more magicalSo, that's the story of Tom's Halloween adventure towards themSuddenly, the lights went out and there was a lot of screaming When the lights came back on, the man was goneLily and Amy decided to leave the party right away They never found out who the strange man was, but that Halloween night left a lasting impression on LilyIn yet another part of town, there was a group of teenagers who decided to have a Halloween scavenger hunt They divided into teams and were given a list of items to findOne of the teams included a boy named Jake and his friends They were running around the neighborhood, looking for the items on the listAs they were searching, they came across an old cemetery The gates were open, and they decided to go in and look for one of the items on their list a black roseThey walked among the tombstones, feeling a little uneasy Suddenly, Jake heard a voice whispering his name He turned around, but no one was thereHis friends were getting scared and wanted to leave, but Jake was determined to find the black rose Just as they were about to give up, Jake saw a single black rose growing by a tombstoneHe reached out to pick it, but as he did, the ground started to shake They all ran out of the cemetery as fast as they couldWhen they got back to the starting point, they were shaking and out of breath They decided that maybe some places were too spooky to explore on HalloweenThese are just a few of the many Halloween 【Symbols of Halloween】Halloween originated as a celebration connected with evil spirits. Witches flying on broomsticks with ghosts, goblins and skeletons have all evolved as symbols of Halloween. Bats, owls and other nocturnal animals are also popular symbols of Halloween. They were originally feared because people believed that these creatures could communicate with the spirits of the dead.Black cats are also symbols of Halloween and have religious origins as well. Black cats were considered to be reincarnated beings with the ability to divine the future. During the Middle Ages it was believed that witches could turn themselves into black cats. Thus when such a cat was seen, it was considered to be a witch in disguise. All these are popular trick-or-treat costumes and decorations for greeting cards and windows.Black is one of the traditional Halloween colors, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions took place at night.Pumpkins are also a symbol of Halloween. The pumpkin is an orange-colored squash, and orange has become the other traditional Halloween color. Carving pumpkins into jack- o'-lanterns is a Halloween custom also dating back to Ireland.A legend grew up about a man named Jack who was so stingy that he was not allowed into heaven when he died, because he was a miser. He couldn't enter hell either because he had played jokes on the devil. As a result, Jack had to walk on the earth with his lantern until Judgement Day. So Jack and his lantern became the symbol of a lost or damned soul.To scare these souls away on Halloween, the Irish people carved scary faces out of turnips, beets or potatoes representing "Jack of the Lantern," or Jack-o-lantern.When the Irish brought their customs to the United States, they carved faces on pumpkins because in the autumn they were more plentiful than turnips.Today jack-o-lanterns in the windows of a house on Halloween night let costumed children know that there are goodies waiting if they knock and say "Trick or Treat!"

Halloween is the one of the oldest holidays still celebrated today. It's one of the most popular holidays, second only to Christmas. While millions of people celebrate Halloween without knowing its origins and myths, the history and facts of Halloween make the holiday more fascinating. Some people view Halloween as a time for fun, putting on costumes, trick-or-treating, and having theme parties. Others view it as a time of superstitions, ghosts, goblins and evil spirits that should be avoided at all costs. As the Christian debate goes on, celebrating Halloween is a preference that is not always viewed as participating in an evil holiday. Halloween is often celebrated with no reference to pagan rituals or the occult.

Ancient Origins of Halloween

Ancient Origins of Halloween

Ancient Origins of Halloween The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginningof the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associatedwith human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. Fora people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell eachother's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with thetraditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples thatis practiced today on Halloween.By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the churchwould make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, anddressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.。

halloween
one story about jack, an irishman, who was not allowed into heaven because he was stingy with his money. so he was sent to hell. but down there he played tricks on the devil (satan), so he was kicked out of hell and made to walk the earth forever carrying a lantern.
well, irish children made jack's lanterns on october 31st from a large potato or turnip, hollowed out with the sides

the sky on the back of the witch's broom.
afterwards we would go home and count who got the most candy. one popular teen-agers' halloween trick was to unroll a roll of toilet paper and throw it high into a tree again and again until the tree was all wrapped in the white paper. the paper would often stay in the tree for weeks until a heavy snow or rain washed it off. no real harm done, but it made a big mess of both the tree and the yard under it. one kind of halloween mischief.
注释:
1. was stingy with:对……

2. carrying a lantern:

3. neighbors' houses:

4. come to the door:应门。

“走到门前面”自然就是要来开门看看是哪些小调皮在捣乱啦!
5. unroll a roll of toilet paper:打开一卷纸。

这么多roll,可别怵!roll是“卷、卷起”的意思,a roll of toilet paper是一卷手纸;unroll则是roll(卷起)的反义词“打开”的意思,所以就是“打开一卷手纸”了!
