be a new boy starting school tomorrow. He comes from the circus and he’ll be with us for a while.”Immediately there was whispering around the classroom.I heard remarks like “Those are dirty people”;“They eat raw meat”,and “Watch out for your bags”.The teacher must have heard them because she sto pped the talking and said in a very serious voice,“Jake is our guest for as long as he stays here.Make sure you treat him well.I don’t want to hear any complaints about your behaviour to him.”I was curious because it was the first time I had met someone from a circus.Fortunately for me,the next morning, after being introduced to the class he sat in the only spare seat next to me.Of course I didn’t want to be nosy (好管闲事的) but I couldn’t help looking at him sideways as I began my mathematics task.I noticed Jake was smaller than me and had dirty finger nails. His shirt was clean but had been repaired in many places and his trousers were helped up by a wide, leather belt.As he seemed to have no handkerchief and was sniffing loudly,I passed him one of mine.Immediately the boys began to whisper “What did you do that for?Leave him be!” I concentrated on my work. From my left a slight movement showed that Jake must have heard the remarks, too. He seemed to be having great difficulty with his work and was struggling to hold his pen correctly. He looked around as if for help.I looked around too.The teacher was busy so I leaned over and offered to explain the problems to him.As he listened, his mouth split into a smile. His eyes lit up as if a light had been turned on and he returned to the exercises with enthusiasm. He finished them quickly and proudly presented them to the teacher.“Well done,Jake,” she approved.Jake smiled and was soon busy sorting out information and adding more of his own.I thought about how Jake’s life would be.I remembered seeing the campsite and thinking how poor the facilities (设施) were.So I decided to help.As it was my turn to suggest a project for our grade,I put forward this idea. Our head teacher accepted it and so we began to prepare our plans to improve the campsite.Hope you will join us.1.Why did the students dislike Jake even before they saw him?A.They must have heard bad stories about people in a circus.B.They always judged a person by what he looked like.C.The teacher hadn’t introduced Jake to them beforehand.D.A newcomer was not welcome at that time.2.What’s the author’s attitude towards Jake?A.He copied the other boys’ behavior.B.He was distant about what Jake’s life was like.C.He couldn’t ignore what other people said about Jake.D.He had sympath y for the poor and disadvantaged.3.The author mentions how Jake did maths to show that________.A.the teacher was helpful and friendlyB.the maths problem was too hard for himC.Jake was courageous and determinedD.the author was better at maths4.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A.To argue people should be treated fairly.B.To ask the reader to join in their project.C.To call on more people to help Jake.D.To show what is in need for a circus.Ⅳ.信息匹配(2021·陕西省咸阳市高考模拟二)A.Set up a meeting.B.Make a shopping list.C.Think in silence.D.Write to your parents.E.Answer useful emails.F.Do things as planned. ,In these early days of 2021,it’s more important than ever to emphasize just how much of a difference the next 15 minutes can make in your day. Then, you perhaps make your new year a perfect future.1.Write a letter or an email of gratitude to your parents. At first, this might sound a little strange, particularly if you don’t have the best relationship with your parents, but write a letter or an email simply thanking your parents for having you.Even if you’ve lost them, even if you don’t know them, even if they aren’t great parents, you can still write this letter.None of us would be here if our parents had not given birth to us,and that’s a unique bond that should not be ignored. You don’t even have to send it if you don’t want to,and the process will be great.2.Make a list of five immediate actions that need to be done in order for progress to be made on the big project(s) on which you are currently working. They don’t have to be big targets, but what you know to be absolute “musts”.T ake massive action on them without hesitation or fear.3.Answer that email you need to get to.You know which one I’m talking about:that email you know is crying out for a response.Maybe it’s workrelated;maybe it’s personal;it doesn’t matter.Respond immediately and clear it from your mind—your focus is needed elsewhere.4.Schedule a meeting that will move you forward.I’m talking about getting together with someone who has information that will be beneficial to you. This doesn’t have to be formal;in fact,it doesn’t even have to be related to your study at all.It can be dinner with a friend from whom you want some advice, for example.Just get that person on the phone, and then get that meeting on the calendar.5.Do absolutely nothing for 15 minutes straight.Yes,choosing to do nothing is,in fact, doing something.Spend 15 minutes in silence, giving your mind and spirit a chance to refresh and regroup.I promise that when the 15 minutes are up you will be able to return to whatever you’re working on with a new perspective.Ⅴ.短文改错(2021·陕西省重点中学二模)A man in Hamburg,Germany, kept getti ng phone, but when he picked up a receiver there was no one on 人教版高中英语选修六课后阅读训练1.【Unit 1 Period 1 Word】及答案解析
AWatercolor is the oldest paints known. It dates back to the early cave men who discovered they could add lifelike qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the walls of caves by mixing thenatural colors found in the earth with water.Fresco(壁画),one of the greatest of all art forms,is done with watercolor. It is createdby mixing paints and water and applying these to wet plaster(灰泥).Of the thousands ofpeople who stand under Michelangelo’s heroic ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few know that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolor painting in the world. The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century made fresco painting go downhill, and for the next several centuries watercolor was used mainly for doing sketches(草图)or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters put back watercolor as a serious art form. The English have a widely-known love for outdoor and also small private pictures. The softness of watercolor had a remarkably strong attraction for them. The popularity of watercolor continued to grow until the twentieth century. The United States passed England as the center for watercolor, producing such well-known watercolor artists as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth.【语篇概述】本文主要介绍了水彩画的发展历程。

Some have a higher level of confidence than others do, but even those whose confidence is lacking can learn to build their level of confidence and reach their most important goals. Increasing self-confidence is one of the most common reasons people give for seeking the help of psychologists and other professionals. One of the many places where a greater level of confidence is useful is in the workplace. We all know how difficult it can be, for instance, to ask the boss for a raise. This process can be extremely difficult for those who lack confidence in their own abilities. After all, if you are unsure about your own abilities, how will you ever convince your boss that you deserve more money for the work you do?Even if you are not asking for that big raise, having plenty of confidence in your abilities is important to success. If you are certain of your abilities, chances are that those around you, whether they are your coworkers, your colleagues or your superiors(上级), will see that confidence, and that will help to assure them that you are the best at what you do.Being thought of as the person to go to, and being seen as an expert in your chosen field, is naturally very important to success on the job. If you can make yourself the person people go to for guidance and advice, you will help to protect yourself from the ever present danger of downsizing. After all, if you are a recognized expert at the office, you will be regarded as an indispensable member of the team.Having a high level of confidence, after all, does not mean overlooking the places where you could improve. Knowing what you do well and where you need help will help you enjoy increased success and confidence. 25.What is the passage mainly about?A.The influence of confidence on one‘s life.B.The importance of confidence to success.C.The difference of people‘s confidence.D.The judgment on one‘s confidence.26.Psychologists and other professionals can offer help to those _____.A.who think their goals are hard to reachB.who expect to give guidance to othersC.who want to ask the boss for a raiseD.who dream to be recognized experts27.What does the underlined word indispensable in Paragraph 5 probably mean? She won a gold medal at last. The decision to start training again wasn't easy. "I s truggled with that a lot," she told a newspaper. ―At the beginning I felt selfish,I felt like, ‗Well, I'm not supposed to be thinking of myself anymore. It's all supposed to be for my kid.‘‖She faced physical challenges of getting back into competition shape after giving birth, as well. When she started racing in the spring of 2011, she was still breast-feeding; she would nurse her son, then race, then breast-feed again after the race. Her days revolved around Lucas and training."I feel like I'm able to do what I love to do and still manage a family and have that balance," Armstrong said. "That you have a family or a child doesn't mean that you have to stop going after what you dream of individually.‖Armstrong makes balance look easy, whether it's on her bike or as an athlete-mom. But she points out that you can't have it all without making some sacrifices. For example, don't expect a neat home—her husband, Joe Savola, who she describes as her support system and her "protector", says he's had to give up on trying to keep everything orderly at home and just accept that their living room has become Lucas's playroom. For Armstrong, she's sacrificed time with friends who had kids around the same age—there just wasn't time. Now, she says, "That sounds like fun to me." Did you oversleep on a weekday and fear you‘d get into trouble at the office? In any case, you know what it feels like to feel fear. But one woman doesn‘t The woman, code-named ―UM‖, gave her first-ever interview after years of being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability to feel afraid.UM can‘t tell you what fear is because she‘s never experienced it. ―I wonder what it‘s like to actually be afraid of something,‖ she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach-Wieth disease, which is characterized by a hoarse(粗哑的)voice, small bumps around the eyes, and calcium deposits(钙沉积的)in the brain. In the case of UM,the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response to fear. In the interview, UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint, ―I was walking to the store, and I saw a man on a park bench. He said. ―Come here, please,‖ so I went over to him. He grabbed me by the shirt, put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him, ―Go ahead and cut me,‖ I wasn‘t afraid at all. We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wif e‘s sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog that my wife realized that we hadn‘t decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed t o be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn‘t find her.It was now one o‘clock, and the concert began at 2:30. ―Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall,‖ suggested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell. It was Joan; she had seen the Crown Jewels, had managed to get another ticket for concert, and had had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant near the hotel where she decided to stay for the night.
