Have you ever watched American sitcoms, such as the Friends or The big bang theory? Do you know the common element in those programs? In my view, they are all full of laughter, because you may be easily tickled by some scenes or words. But when it comes to British television series, it’s hard to hear your laughter. A huge number of people may hold the point that British are serious and rigid, they don’t have much humor. In fact, only think actor’s dialogues again and again can you seize the British humor.Today I want to share you with one episode about the British language humor in Downtown Abbey which focuses on the heir of the manor in the early 19 century. The episode occurs between Mrs. Isobel Crawley (the heroine lady Mary’s mother-in-law) and elder lady Grantham (Lady Mary’s granny) ——she is my favorite actress, her real name is Maggie Smith. If you have watched the highly successful Harry Potter film series, you must know her well. She acted as the stern Professor Minerva McGonagall in the movies. In spite of her 79-year-old age, the honorary countess Violet’s wisecracks let you know she is having the time of her life. In Downtown Abbey, as long as Mrs. Isobel Crawley and elder lady Grantham appear together, rivalries can’t be avoided. Here we go.(The eighth episode in series four: just recovered from a heavy disease, elder lady Grantham started a new round combat against Mrs.Isobel Crawley.)After knocked at the door, Isobel directly went into lady Grantham’s room and said, “It’s only me.” Only three syllables, showing her existence and emphasis she is the only person to look in the lady Grantham as usual. In terms of their background and relationship, I guess Isobel’s words may contain some unspoken meanings, such as “though you lady Grantham look down upon me used to be a nurse, but this time you got ill I’m glad to look after you and I even saved your life through my professional nursing care. I think we may be friends now.”However, as a wife of earl, elder lady Grantham thought she was offended. How dare someone forget to greet her instead of saying “it’s only me.”? Even though you saved my life, our relationship won’t be closer, and our status remains the same, more importantly my dignity can’t be insulted. Therefore, she said quietly with sitting in a chair, “I always feel that greeting betrays such a lack of self worth.”Can you see how witty the granny is? Though she wanted Mrs. Isobel to greet her, she used an impassive word, “betray”, as if she was by Isobel’s side. What a satire? Besides, she criticized Mrs. Isobel’s impoliteness with the phrase “a lack of self worth”, and also gave Isobel’s always saying “to realize self worth” a beautiful hit. Then Mrs. Isobel had to give in and followed elder lady Grantham’s remarks with a lively voice,“How are we today?”Yet, our imperious elder lady Grantham was not satisfied. She said, “My dear, please stop talking to me, as if I were a child past hope.” You see, she kept nagging at Mrs. Isobel’s tone.Mrs. Isobel couldn’t win the ague as usual, thus, she said, “Very well. How are you feeling?”“Like Doctor Manette. If I don’t get out of this house soon, I shall remember nothing but my number.”, finally elder lady Grantham seemed to have a chance to pour out her woes. What a lovely granny! Each time when I recall lady Grantham’s classic expression and her clever remarks, I can’t help bursting into laughter.。

Downton Abbey," a British television drama series set in the early 20th century, tells a story of the Grantham family and their servants at the eponymous estate. Sinceits premiere in 2010, it has captured the hearts ofmillions with its intricate plotting, rich characters, and exquisite period detail. The show not only showcases the glamour and grandeur of the Edwardian era but also explores themes of class, love, and family. What I found most captivating about "Downton Abbey" is its ability to transport the viewer to another time and place. The estate, with its elaborate architecture and vast grounds, seems like a character itself, embodying the grandeur and dignity of the era. The costumes, hairstyles, and dialogues all contribute to the immersive experience, making it feel like one is stepping into a different world. The story, centered around the Crawley family and their servants, is both compelling and emotional. The Crawleys, despite their wealth and status, face their own challenges and trials, just like any other family. The servants, on the other hand, while living in a different world withinthe estate, also have their own dreams, aspirations, and struggles. The intricate web of relationships and conflicts among them creates a compelling narrative that keeps the viewer hooked. One of the themes that "Downton Abbey" explores is the class divide. The Crawley family, as representatives of the upper class, live a life of luxury and privilege, while the servants, many of whom are poor and uneducated, struggle to make ends meet. However, the show also highlights the humanity that transcends class boundaries. Despite their differences, the Crawleys and their servants form meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and affection. This theme is particularly poignant in an era where social divides are becoming increasingly apparent.Another theme that resonates with me is the importance of family. In "Downton Abbey," family is not just a biological connection but a bond of love and loyalty. The Crawleys, despite their flaws and differences, always come together in times of crisis, showing each other unwavering support. This portrayal of family reminds us of theimportance of cherishing our own families and the role they play in shaping our lives. The characters in "Downton Abbey" are also wonderfully crafted. From the stoic and dignified Robert Crawley to the charming and intelligent Mary Crawley, each character has their own unique personality and story. The servants, too, are not just stereotypes but fully realized characters with their own dreams and aspirations. The actors, with their出色表演, bring these characters to life, making them relatable and memorable. The music and cinematography of "Downton Abbey" are also noteworthy. The period music complements the story perfectly, adding emotional depth to the scenes. The cinematography, with its attention to detail and beautiful visuals, creates a visual feast for the eyes.In conclusion, "Downton Abbey" is not just a period drama but a timeless tale of love, family, and class. It captivates the viewer with its intricate plotting, rich characters, and exquisite period detail. The show's ability to transport us to another time and place, combined withits themes of class, love, and family, makes it a must-watch for anyone interested in British history and culture or simply in searching for a heartfelt and engaging story.

Ladies and gentlemen,Today, I would like to share with you a collection of humorous English stories that I have compiled over the years. These stories have brought laughter and joy to countless people, and I hope they will do the same for you.First, I would like to start with a classic British joke. A man walks into a library and asks the librarian, "Do you have any books on paranoia?" The librarian whispers back, "They're right behind you."Next, let me share with you a story about a Texan and a New Yorker. The Texan boasts to the New Yorker about the size of his ranch, saying, "I can get in my car and drive all day and still not reach the end of my property." The New Yorker replies, "I used to have a car like that."Now, let's move on to a story that illustrates the dangers of not reading the fine print. A man buys a ticket to attend a magic show, but he doesn't bother to read the small print on the back of the ticket. As he enters the theater, he is shocked to find that he has actually volunteered to be part of the show. The magician proceeds to saw him in half, but miraculously, the man survives. Afterwards, the man is approached by the magician, who asks himhow he managed to survive. The man replies, "I saw the drill on the table next to me and figured I had better hold my breath."Moving on, I have a story that highlights the importance of taking breaks. A man is working in his office, and his boss walks in and says, "You've been working so hard, you deserve a break." The man replies, "Great, I'll take next Thursday off."Now, let me share with you a story about a blonde who decided to go to college. On her first day, the professor asks the class, "What is the opposite of joy?" The blonde immediately raises her hand and says, "Sadness." The professor then asks, "And the opposite of depression?" The blonde quickly responds, "Elevation."Finally, I would like to end with a story that illustrates the perils of making assumptions. A man walks into a pet store and asks the clerk, "Do you have any parrots?" The clerk replies, "Yes, we have several, but they all speak Spanish." The man, not knowing Spanish, decides to take a chance and buys one of the parrots. He takes it home and tries to have a conversation with it, but the parrot just looks at him blankly. Frustrated, the man takes the parrot back to the store and demands a refund. The clerk asks, "Did you try talking to it in Spanish?" The man replies, "No, I assumed it would understand English."In conclusion, I hope these stories have brought some humor and joy to your day. Remember, laughter is the best medicine, and in times of stress and hardship, it's important to take a step back and find humor in the world around us. Thank you.。

As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story. /chuzhong/chusan/ 65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure. In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth. He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 2002, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. Hereceived a warm welcome. When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have thecourage to admit and correct one’s error. Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. Title: The Quirky Joys of British HumourBritish humour, often described as dry, sarcastic, and sometimes dark, is a unique and cherished aspect of the British identity. It is a form of comedy that requires a certain level of intelligence and wit to appreciate, and once you understand it, you can't help but admire its cleverness. One of the defining features of British humour is its ability to find comedy in everyday situations. Whether it's queuing up at the post office or navigating the complexities of the London Underground, Brits have a knack for turning the mundane into the hilarious. Take, for example, the beloved sitcom \'The Office.\' This show takes a mundane workplace and transforms it into a goldmine of awkward moments and sharp one-liners.Irony and sarcasm are also key components of British humour. Instead of stating something directly, Brits often say the opposite to convey their true feelings. This can be confusing for outsiders, but once you catch on, it adds a layer of depth and cleverness to everyday conversations. For instance, if a Brit says, \'Lovely weather we're having,\' on a rainy day, they're actually commenting on the less-than-ideal conditions.British humour is not afraid to venture into the dark or controversial. Comedians like Ricky Gervais and Frankie Boyle push boundaries, making audiences laugh at things they might otherwise find taboo. This darknesscan be off-putting to some, but it also creates a sense of relief and camaraderie, as it shows that we can find humour even in life's most challenging moments.Another aspect of British humour is the love of self-deprecation. Brits are not afraid to make fun of themselves, which can be endearing and relatable. This is evident in shows like \' Miranda\' and \'Catastrophe,\' where the protagonists often find themselves in embarrassing situations but manage to laugh at their own shortcomings. The charm of British humour lies in its subtlety and intelligence. It requires an understanding of cultural nuances and a willingness to embrace the absurdity of life. Once you immerse yourself in it, you'll find that British comedy is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking and insightful. In conclusion, British humour is a delightful and distinctive aspect of the nation's culture. From the sharp wit of a stand-up comedian to the clever dialogue in a sitcom, it offers a unique perspective on life that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. So, the next time you find yourself scratching your head at a British joke, take a moment to appreciate the quirky joys of British humour. You might just find yourself chuckling along.。

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and fellow humor enthusiasts,Today, I stand before you as a purveyor of laughter and a champion of all things funny. I believe that in our increasingly hectic and stressful world, humor is an essential ingredient to help us navigate through the ups and downs of life. So, if you're ready, let's embark on a journey filled with chuckles, giggles, and perhaps even a hearty belly laugh or two.First and foremost, let's talk about the power of a well-timed joke. Have you ever noticed how a well-placed pun or a clever one-liner can turn a dull and monotonous conversation into a vibrant and engaging exchange? Take, for example, the famous quote by Oscar Wilde: "I can resist everything except temptation." This witty play on words not only brings a smile to our faces but also invites us to reflect on our own struggles with self-control.In essence, humor has the ability to bring us closer together, transcending barriers and forging connections. Think about it – what better way to break the ice and alleviate tension than with a good-natured joke? Whether it's a lighthearted quip, a comical anecdote, or even a humorous meme, laughter knows no boundariesand can bridge gaps between cultures, age groups, and backgrounds. Now, let's dive into a few amusing scenarios that many of us can relate to. We've all been there –standing in line at the grocery store, waiting for what feels like an eternity as the person in front of us carefully examines every item before deciding whether or not it's worth the purchase. It's in those moments of frustration that humor can come to the rescue. Perhaps we can adopt the mindset of the comedian who said, "I always try to cheer myself up by singing when I get sad. Most of the time, it turns out that my voice is worse than my problems."Moreover, humor can also be a valuable coping mechanism in tough times. Life inevitably throws us curveballs, and when faced with challenges, a dash of laughter can bring much-needed relief. Remember the story of the man who lost his job? Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he decided to become a professional banana peeler, stating, "Why let a jobless situation go to waste? Peel it back and find some appeal!" While this may seem silly at first, it encourages us to find silver linings even in our darkest moments. In addition to personal anecdotes, let's explore how humor permeates various aspects of our lives. Take, for instance, the world of politics. In the face of serious political debates and contentious issues, political satireoffers a playful way to shed light on the absurdities of our system. One cannot help but chuckle at the biting commentary of late-night talk show hosts or the witty cartoons that hilariously depict politicians with oversized ears or exaggerated facial expressions. Through satire, humor acts as a pressure release valve, allowing us to laugh at the follies of those in power.Furthermore, humor has the potential to positively impact our health and well-being. Laughter has been scientifically proven to reduce stress levels, boost the immune system, and even alleviate pain. So, the next time you're feeling under the weather, why not curl up with a funny movie or spend time with friends who havemastered the art of comedic timing? Remember, laughter is the best medicine – and it's free!In conclusion, the power of humor should never be underestimated. It has the ability to bring joy, unite communities, and add lightness to our daily lives. So, let's embrace our inner jokers, sprinkle humor into our conversations, and find laughter in the simplest of moments. As Charlie Chaplin once said, "A day without laughter is a day wasted."Thank you, and remember to laugh often and laugh wholeheartedly!。

In fact, only think actor’s dialogues again and again can you seize the British humor.
Today I want to share you with one episode about the British language humor in Downtown Abbey which focuses on the heir of the manor in the early 19 century.
Here we go.
(The eighth episode in series four: just recovered from a heavy disease, elder lady Grantham started a new round combat against Mrs.
Isobel Crawley.)
After knocked at the door, Isobel directly went into lady Grantham’s room and said, “It’s only me.” Only three syllables, showing her existence and emphasis she is the only person to look in the lady Grantham as usual. In terms of their background and relationship, I guess Isobel’s words may contain some unspoken meanings, such as “though you lady Grantham look down upon me used to be a nurse, but this time you got ill I’m glad to look after you and I even saved your life through my professional nursing care. I think we may be friends now.”
However, as a wife of earl, elder lady Grantham thought she was offended. How dare someone forget to greet her instead of saying “it’s only me.”? Even though you saved my life, our relationship won’t be closer, and our status remains the same, more importantly my dignity can’t be insulted. Therefore, she said quietly with sitting in a chair, “I always feel that greeting betrays such a lack of self worth.”
Can you see how witty the granny is? Though she wanted Mrs. Isobel to greet her, she used an impassive word, “betray”, as if she was by Isobel’s side. What a satire? Besides, she criticized Mrs. Isobel’s impoliteness with the phrase “a lack of self worth”, and also gave Isobel’s always saying “to realize self worth” a beautiful hit.
Then Mrs. Isobel had to give in and followed elder lady Grantham’s remarks with a lively voice,“How are we today?”
Yet, our imperious elder lady Grantham was not satisfied. She said, “My dear, please stop talking to me, as if I were a child past hope.” You see, she kept nagging at Mrs. Isobel’s tone.
Mrs. Isobel couldn’t win the ague as usual, thus, she said, “Very well. How are you feeling?”
“Like Doctor Manette.
