NSEFC Module 1, Unit 4: Earthquakes

Type:Warming up and reading (40 minutes)

Teaching objectives:

By the end of the class, students should be able to:

Skim the passage to find out the main idea and scan the passage to locate specific information;

To acquire more knowledge about the Great Tangshan Earthquake;Generate right attitudes towards how to survive from the earthquakes and treasure the most important things in life.

Teaching procedure:

Step 1 Warming up (8 mins)

Activity 1 Ask and answer (4 mins)

T: Good morning class. How are you today?

Ss: Good. Fine...

T: Do you know the meaning of natural disaster?

S: Yes…

T: Would you tell me some natural disasters?

S: Flood. / Sandstorm. / Typhoon…

T: Have you ever experienced any natural disaster?

S1.2: Yes.

T: Would you like to tell us your experience?

S1: …

S2: …

T: Thank you for your sharing.

T: Now please look at these pictures, class. Can you name all the disasters?

Ss: Volcanic eruption Hailstone Flood Sandstorm Typhoon.

Activity 2 Talk about your feelings (4 mins)

T: Are you familiar with this date?

S: Yes. / No.

T: That does not matter. Look at the next picture. Please guess what had happened there. Yes, there might be a terrible earthquake. The pictures were taken in Tangshan. They are about the Great Tangshan Earthquake. What can you see in the pictures?

Ss: The city was ruined and a lot people died or got hurt.…

T: I want you to talk about your feelings.

T: So the earthquake is quite terrible, right?
