The school’s annual Animal Day performance is coming. How much happiness will it bring to the teachers and students? Jamie wandered. As a lively and humorous student, Jamie often makes his classmates burst into laughter with his humor, sometimes even in class. But now, he sat in his English class, mindlessly doodling (涂鸦) on his notebook, when suddenly a notice came from the loudspeaker of the classroom.“Jamie Turner, please report to the head master’s office immediately.”Jamie’s heart sank, not knowing what it was for. When he reached the headmaster’s office he took a deep breath and prepared himself for the worst. But what he found was far beyond his expectations. The headmaster, Mr. Harrison was wearing a giant yellow chicken hat on his head. The hat had red combs, white feathers, and wings that covered his ears. Jamie’s mouth fell open at the sight, too shocked to speak.Mr. Harrison glanced at Jamie over his reading glasses, “I’ve called you here because we’ve been having some complaints about your behavior.”“Complaints?” Jamie repeated, trying to keep his voice steady.“Yes,” he said, nodding seriously. “You’ve been…too funny.”He leaned forward, “You see, we’re getting reports from your classmates that you’re constantly making them laugh in class. They can’t focus on learning.”Jamie’s jaw dropped further. Was that really the reason he was called to the headmaster’s office? The principal continued, his tone serious “Now, we take our education very seriously here, and while we appreciate a good sense of humor, we have to draw the line somewhere. We cannot have students spoiling the learning environment with their…their humor. Well, just …just make sure you keep your jokes to a minimum during class time, okay?”Jamie nodded promising he would try to be less funny in class. “Um, Mr. Harrison, why are you wearing a chicken hat?” Jamie asked, unable to contain his curiosity. Mr. Harrison told Jamie that he would play the part of a chicken at the school’s Animal Day performance. Jamie grinned, imagining the sight of his normally serious principal acting like a chicken.

Canada is a vast and rough land. From north to south it covers more than half the Northern Hemisphere. From east to west it spreads almost 4 700 miles (7 560 kilometers) across six time zones. It is the second largest country in the world, but it has only 0.5% of the world's population.Canada features black-blue lakes, numerous rivers, splendid western mountains, rolling central plains, and forested eastern valleys. The Canadian Shield, a hilly region of lakes and swamps, spreads across northern Canada and has some of the oldest rocks on earth. Canada's far north lies in the frozen grip of the Arctic, where ice, snow, and glaciers control the landscape. Few trees grow here, and farming is not practical. Native Canadians, called First Nations people, live in this region by hunting and fishing. In some ways Canada is many nations in one. Descendants of British and French immigrants, who kept up many English and French traditions, make up about half the population. They were followed by other European and Asian immigrants. First Nations peoples make up about four percent of the population. Inuit people live mosdy in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Many Native Canadians live on their traditional lands, but many others have moved to cities across Canada. First Nations artwork is widely recognized and is seen as a symbol of Canadian culture.Canada's remote north and extensive forests are home to wildlife, from bears, wolves, beavers, and bighorn sheep to smaller animals like raccoons, otters, and rabbits. The country's lakes and rivers, which contain about 20 percent of all fresh water on earth, are full of fish such as trout and salmon. Canadians work hard to protect the native wildlife. Canada has 41 national parks and three marine conservation areas. Nevertheless, species like wolves, lynx, and Atlantic fish have been overhunted and overfished.1.What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?A. Canada covers the Northern Hemisphere.B. Canada has the second largest population.C. Canada has abundant natural resources.D. Canada has the oldest rocks on earth.2.Who makes up about four percent of the population?A. British and French immigrants.B. Native Canadians.C. Other European and Asian immigrants.D. Inuit people.3. What does the underlined word "Descendants" probably mean in Paragraph 3?A. Later generations.B. Relatives.C. Family members.D. Friends.4. What is special about Native Canadians?A.They take up hunting and fishing as their hobbies.B.Their artwork might represent Canadian culture.C.They have moved to cities across Canadian areas.D.Their ancestors depended on farming in cold weather.■文章语言点学习重点词汇和短语1 .Descendants of British and French immigrants, who kept up many English and French traditions,主句主语关系代词谓语宾语make up about half the population.(第三段第二句)谓语宾语【功能注释】本句是一个主从复合句。

In a story that fits a Hollywood script (剧本), two strange neighbors connected through music and formed an unusual bond by playing the piano together through a wall.Giorgio Lo Porto is an Italian living in London, England. While he’s never met his neighbor, he knows his new neighbor is a pianist. His curiosity sets off a series of online videos recording their growing friendship.Lo Porto then says that he’s left a note telling his neighbor that he loved his music and included a request: Could you play “My Heart Will Go On?” As music starts playing in the background, he posts “I guess it’s a yes.”In the next v ideo, not only does Lo Porto play the piano, he’s also invited his neighbor to a duet (二重奏). Although he hasn’t played for a while, it appears that his relationship with his neighbor lights up his lost passion forthe instrument (乐器).In another video, Lo Porto begins playing “River Flows Through You,” and stops. At the very moment, his neighbor picks up where he left off.And just like that, the two started a weekly duet “meet up,” as they played back and forth through the wall. With every note, Lo Porto’s curiosity about his neighbor’s identity (身份) increased, until one day he took the leap to meet him. With much expectation and thousands of fascinated online users, Lo Porto revealed (透漏) that he finally met his melodic neighbor.“Well, today I have met my neighbor. It was better than expected. His name is Emil...” Lo Porto posted. It turns out that Emil is a 87-year-old native of Poland who recently lost his wife to COVID.He was in between homes as he waited for his house to be sold.As Lo Porto explained, Emil played the piano at 2 PM every weekend “because his wife loved it.” Playing it “keeps him closer to his wife and away from the painful reminder” of her absence. Lo Porto promised Emil that he would continue their duets till he moved out.

Doubts clouded my mind as I into that new world, Parsons School of Design. But fate had a plan, introducing me to Kathleen, who would become my guiding light.I remember feeling out of place on my first day at Parsons, questioning everything from my outfit to my abilities. As I walked in and scanned the classroom, my vision sharply stopped on one person. Wow. She looked cool. I plopped myself down next to her and introduced myself as Dorri, thrilled when she smiled and said, “Hi. I’m Kathleen.” That was all it took. What a difference Kathleen made in my school life! Her confidence, discipline, and responsibility were worlds away from my shaky, wild, and lazy nature. We became inseparable, signing up for the same classes, and I was always trying to earn her approval. One day the homework assignment was to create an exciting illustration based on a pair of shoes. Burstingwith ideas, I pulled out my favorite pair of antique thrift shop “old-lady shoes” and poured my heart into the project. Proud of my work, I rushed to Kathleen’s apartment to show her my creation, holding up my paper with glowing confidence. But Kathleen’s reaction was unexpected, crushing my pride with a single question: “Is that the only drawing you did?”“Well, yes,” I responded sheepishly, “Why?”“Come on,” she said. “Let’s go to Washington Square Park and really do some drawings.” I was puzzled, but when she led, I willingly followed, with my pad tucked under my arm.As we made our way to the park, Kathleen enthusiastically talked about form, content, and composition and stressed the significance of observing subjects closely. She described the shoes in my drawing as the kind worn by elderly women who frequent the park to feed pigeons. That moment, she taught me to look closely and recreate diligently.

American football can be pretty competitive. From old opponents to fan drama, it’s just another part of the game. There have even been all-out violent fights in the name of defending your team. However, one high school football player Mario Hoefer showed that his love for the sport didn’t take priority over helping a person in need. One afternoon in September, Charles City High School football team Mario was on faced nearby New Hampton in a Friday football game. Mario was captain of his team and Carter the quarterback of the opposing team.It was really foggy and awfully hot. Filled with excited audience in the stands, the stadium felt like a heated steamer. Every player was we win sweat even during the warm-ups. All this meant the game would be a tough one and a test or the mind and body of both teams.Soon the game began and for the first three quarters, each team seemed to have a chance to win and theytook the lead by turns. So exhausted was Mario running back and forth that he cramped (抽筋) up twice. Each time he got a cramp near the New Hampton sideline, his teammates came to his assistance and stretched his leg to ease the cramp. Though feeling uncomfortable and worn out, Mario soldiered on as Charles City protected a slim lead and New Hampton attempted a late comeback. In the fourth quarter, Mario saw his teammates across the field break up a crucial pass intended for Carter. Mario was about to cross over to the other side of the field to high five his teammates when he noticed that beside him, Carter fell onto the ground, screaming in pain, his eyes wide open and a look of panic on his face. Carter grabbed his left calf (小腿肚), trying to move his leg in different positions. Judging from Carter’s desperate expression, Mario realized Carter was possibly experiencing an unbearable cramp just as he himself had gone through minutes before. But the New Hampton players were farther away from the quarterback.

My husband, Robert Stone and I were enjoying a peaceful afternoon together in Barbados — our vacation destination. It was sunny and warm, and we decided it was the perfect time to go for an ocean dip. When we were floating around, I said, “What a nice holiday! Let’s swim out, not that far but enough to be out of our depth.” But we hadn’t considered just how strong the current was on that particular day. Although we had visited Barbados several times, we didn’t realize the specific area we floated to was known for its strong current.Noticing that we were floating in the direction of the neighboring beach, I decided to swim toward the beach we came from, against the current. I soon realized that my husband was falling behind and was suddenly too far away to even hear me. I attempted to swim to the shore to get help but struggled to push past the current. I just couldn’t get anywhere and began to scream out for a lifeguard. But no one came after a few minutes.Just then I saw two teenage girls boogie-boarding near the shore. “Help! Help!” I screamed. Hearing my cries for help, the girls swam toward me and helped pull me onto the boogie board. One girl told me to hold ontight and tied the boogie board tether (拴绳) to her wrist. The other girl was by her side for support. They managed to swim to the shore and brought me to safety.Grateful but still scared, I repeated that my husband was stuck farther out in the ocean. I asked for a lifeguard. The girls told me there wasn’t a lifeguard around, and they would go get him. “You can’t do that!” I told them, “Strong current!” The girls reassured me that they were in Barbados as part of a swimming camp and insisted that they were both experienced in the water.
