Shortly after he achieved freedom Henson became intent on assisting fugitive sl aves. He secretly returned to the United States from Canada several times to he lp others to travel the Underground Railroad to freedom. Once some slave catche rs closed in on the escaping slaves and Henson when they were on the run. He d isguised them and successfully avoided capture. Later he built a small settleme nt in Dresden in Canada for escaped slaves, setting up a chapel and a school. H e held to the conviction that slavery would be abolished, and the day was bound to come when racial discrimination no longer existed.人们It is almost impossible to keep a determined burglar out. They have forgotten that only through persistent effort can one achieve success.1997Dolly the sheep resulted from a cloning experiment by a group of Scottish scien tists in 1997. A fierce debate on human cloning has ever since been going on. T his contentious issue has focused on ethical and social implications of the tec hnology:what the technology might do to the very meaning of human reproduction, child rearing, individuality, etc.The majority of scientists are adamantly opposed to reproductive cloning and su pport therapeutic cloning for treating diseases. The reason is that therapeutic cloning does not involve any type of relief of suffering in human beings. Scie ntists believe that with politics and monitoring in place to ensure that therap eutic cloning is used safely, we can all benefit from this procedure. The Underground Railroad was forged by the rfforts of those who were prepared to fight against slavery and stand up for the long-suffering Southern black Americans. Some of those who helped to transport slaves to the north and freedom were former slaves themselves.Others felt compelled to take part because of their deeply held comvictionsEor many of those involved, liberating the slaves from those who exploned them became a mission. While their eventual goal was to abolish slavery completely,in the meantime they were intent on helping to free as many slaves aspossible, offen at considerable risk.In the eyes of slave owners, they were dangerous enemies and frequently received death threats.Statistics show that crime in rural areas is now rising faster than in the cities.the era when the countryside stood for safety and security has long gone. No longer is it safe anywhere to go out leaving the door on the latch. We all feel Vulnerableand seek to strengthen the barrier we use to hold criminals at bay. These can range from old fashioned bolts and bars to the latest electric devices.A moment’s reflection, however is enough to being us face to face with the following pizzle:we may have lockedthe evils out,but in doing so we have locked ourselves in.Thishhardlu seems a civilized way of life.I had only know Johnsy a few months when she fell vicim to the disease. We had met in May and finding ourselves so much in tune, had set up hometogether. Then,inNovember, she became ill.Scarcely able to speak in a whisper, she seemed unable to cling to life,It was such a change. Before she had always been so lively and merry. Now she just sat up in bed staring out of the window. She had this strange belief that once the last leaf on thevine outside fell, she would die.I told her it was all nonsense, but to no effect. It was our downstairsneighbor,Mr.Behrman, who came to her rescue. When he hered of Johnsy’s strange fancy he flew into a fierce temper, regarding it as a sin that one so young should give up life so easily. Thanks to Behrman, the last leaf never did fall. Late at night he had climbed up and painted the leaf in the wall. It was his long-promised masterpiece. In his interview, Samuel Wood discusses the issue of human cloning. It is, he freely admits, a contentious one. He personally does not approve of producing human clones for reproductivepurposes, as he believes this has great potential to provide new means to fight disease. Nonetheless, there are those who condemn human cloning in this area also. Partly this stems from misconception about what is involved, but partly the opposition comes from differences in deeply held values. Wood names the Pope and President Bush as two notable opponents of his work. Wood’s own commitment to his research result from the promise he made to himself to look for a cure to the disease from which his mother died. It was a promise that was later to lead him to come forward in public as the first man to clone himself. This he did by transplanting one of his own cells into a clonated egg from which the genetic material had been removed。

Why I TeachPeter G. BeidlerWhy do you teach? My friend asked the question when I told him that I didn't want to be considered for an administrative position. He was puzzled that I did not want what was obviously a "step up" toward what all Americans are taught to want when they grow up: money and power.Certainly I don't teach because teaching is easy for me. Teaching is the most difficult of the various ways I have attempted to earn my living: mechanic, carpenter, writer. For me, teaching is a red-eye, sweaty-palm, sinking-stomach profession. Red-eye, because I never feel ready to teach no matter how late I stay up preparing. Sweaty-palm, because I'm always nervous before I enter the classroom, sure that I will be found out for the fool that I am. Sinking-stomach, because I leave the classroom an hour later convinced that I was even more boring than usual.Nor do I teach because I think I know answers, or because I have knowledge I feel compelled to share. Sometimes I am amazed that my students actually take notes on what I say in class! Why, then, do I teach?I teach because I like the pace of the academic calendar. June, July, and August offer an opportunity for reflection, research and writing.I teach because teaching is a profession built on change. When the material is the same, I change —— and, more important, my students change.I teach because I like the freedom to make my own mistakes, to learn my own lessons, to stimulate myself and my students. As a teacher, I'm my own boss. If I want my freshmen to learn to write by creating their own textbook, who is to say I can't? Such courses may be huge failures, but we can all learn from failures.I teach because I like to ask questions that students must struggle to answer. The world is full of right answers to bad questions. While teaching, I sometimes find good questions.I teach because I enjoy finding ways of getting myself and my students out of the ivory tower and into the real world. I once taught a course called "Self-Reliance in a Technological Society." My 15 students read Emerson, Thoreau, and Huxley. They kept diaries. They wrote term papers. But we also set up a corporation, borrowed money, purchased a run-down house and practiced self-reliance by renovating it. At the end of the semester, we would the house, repaid our loan, paid or taxes, and distributed the profits among the group. So teaching gives me pace, and variety, and challenge, and the opportunity to keep on learning.I have left out, however, the most important reasons why I teach. One is Vicky. My first doctoral student, Vicky was an energetic student who labored at her dissertation on a little-known 14th century poet. She wrote articles and sent them off to learned journals. She did it all herself, with an occasional nudge from me. But I was there when she finished her dissertation, learned that her articles were accepted, got a job and won a fellowship to Harvard working on a book developing ideas she'd first had as my student.Another reason is George, who started as an engineering student, then switched to English because he decided he liked people better than things. There is Jeanne, who left college, but was brought back by her classmates because they wanted her to see the end of the self-reliance house project. I was here when she came back. I was there when she told me that she later became interested in the urban poor and went on to become a civil rights lawyer. There is Jacqui, a cleaning woman who knows more by intuition than most of us learn by analysis. Jacqui has decided to finish high school and go to college. These are the real reasons I teach, these people who grow and change in front of me. Being a teacher is being present at the creation, when the clay begins to breathe.A "promotion" out of teaching would give me money and power. But I have money. I get paid to do what I enjoy: reading, talking with people, and asking question like, "What is the point of being rich?"And I have power. I have the power to nudge, to fan sparks, to suggest books, to point out a pathway. What other power matters? But teaching offers something besides money and power: it offers love. Not only the love of learning and of books and ideas, but also the love that a teacher feels for that rare student who walks into a teacher's life and begins to breathe. Perhaps love is the wrong word: magic might be better.I teach because, being around people who are beginning to breathe, I occasionally find myself catching my breath with them.。

Key to Exercises:Unit 1Exercise I:1.

7.Men are not always made thoughtful by books; but they are generally made thoughtful byassociation with men who thinks.8.Basic education is currently funded primarily by the state in most countries.9.The impact of globalization is not just on trade and production, it also has an important impacton education.10.A new challenge to teaching is the pressure to internationalize curriculum offerings. Exercise II:1. Translate the following passage from English into Chinese.

2.Translate the following passage from Chinese into English.I often hear university presidents say, "I treat my students as if they were my own children." And indeed they act just like strict but loving parents, telling the students that they should get at least eight hours of sleep, that everyone must get up for morning exercises at six a.m., that they aren't allowed to walk around campus in slippers.I have always considered university presidents to be visionary policymakers who set the course of academic research and education rather than mere nannies in charge of feeding steamed bread and porridge to infants. Some educators might say, "If these students had learned a bit of independence and self-discipline before they came to college, I wouldn't need to spoon-feed and discipline them like this. It is because they were not taught all these things in primary and secondary school that I, a university president, have to teach them now.”These remarks sound reasonable, yet in fact they are quite illogical. Since it is because the students have all along been taught in a spoon-fed manner that they haven't acquired independence and self-discipline after 12 years of schooling, wouldn't it merely result in an endless vicious circle if this sort of "babysitting" is continued at university level? Besides, what are the aims ofour university education? To turn out submissive and rule-abiding students, or students who are able to independently assess a situation, make decisions and pass judgments?Unit 2Exercise 1.

2. When talking about China-US trade, we should not overlook one fundamental fact, that is, in the past 25 years, two-way trade has experienced a tremendous expansion … Does such a huge increase benefit only one side at the expense of the other? … In fact, both countries have reaped tremendous benefits from the rapid expansion of China-US trade.… china is the world’s largest developing country with a huge market, fast development and a low cost of labor, but short in capital and relatively backward in technology and management. …such diversity and complementarity will remain for a long time, and are likely to feature more prominently in the ongoing economic globalization.Unit 3 Exercise 1.
