Population ChangeWhy is the world’s population growing? The answer is not what you might think. The reason for the explosion is not that people have been reproducing like rabbits, but that people have stopped dropping dead like flies. In 1900, people died at the average age of 30. By 2000 the average age was 65. But while increasing health was a typical feature of the 20th century, declining birth rate could be a defining one of the 21st.Statistics show that the average number of births per woman has fallen from 4.9 in the early 1960s to 2.5 nowadays. Furthermore, around 50% of the world’s population live in regions where the figure is now below the replacement level (i.e. 2.1 births per woman) and almost all developed nations are experiencing sub-replacement birth rate. You might think that developing nations would make up the loss (especially since 80% of the world’s people now l ive in such nations), but you’d be wrong. Declining birth rate is a major problem in many developing regions too, which might cause catastrophic global shortages of work force within a few decades.A great decline in young work force is likely to occur in China, for instance. What does it imply? First, China needs to undergo rapid economic development before a population zxxk decline hits the country. Second, if other factors such as technology remain constant, economic growth and material expectations will fall well below recent standards and this could invite trouble.Russia is another country with population problems that could break its economic promise. Since 1992 the number of people dying has been bigger than that of those being born by a massive 50%. Indeed official figures suggest the country has shrunk by 5% since 1993 and people in Russia live a shorter life now than those in 1961. Why is this occurring? Nobody is quite sure, but poor diet and above all long-time alcoholism have much to do with it. If current trends don’t bend, Russia’s population will be about the size of Yemen’s bythe year 2050.In the north of India, the population is booming due to high birth rates, but in the south, where most economic development is taking place, birth rate is falling rapidly. In a further twist, birth rate is highest in poorly educated rural areas and lowest in highly educated urban areas. In total, 25% of India’s working-age population has no education. In 2030, a sixth of the country’s potential work forc e could be totally uneducated. One solution is obviously to import foreign workers via immigration. As for the USA, it is almost unique among developed nations in having a population that is expected to grow by 20% from 2010—2030. Moreover, the USA has a track record of successfully accepting immigrants. As a result it’s likely to see a rise in the size of its working-age population and to witness strong economic growth over the longer term.Population Change71. 【答案】lower【解析】根据"declining birth rate could be a defining one of the 21st"可知,21世纪的出生率比20世纪低,且much/ even/far/a lot/ a little等修饰比较级,故填lower。

According to McLean, “When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try.”Her students agree. One young man with a patent for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of McLean McLean’’s statement. “If I h ad not heard the story of the windshield wiperhad not heard the story of the windshield wiper ’s invention,” said Tommy Lee, a senior physics major, “I “I“I never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into s never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into s so constructive.” Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent to an umbrella producer. Unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills (see picture) ) to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put themThe project, called Hywind, is the world’s first large -scale deepwater wind turbine (涡轮发电机涡轮发电机涡轮发电机). ). Although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton 2.3-megawatt turbine, Hywind represents totally new technology. The turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar (see picture ),), a technology Hywind’s creator, the Norwegian company StatoilHydro, has developed recently. The steel spar, which is fil stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables; these will keep the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves. Hywind’s stability in in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for If all goes according to plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the southwestern Norway as early as September. To produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind farm will have to use bigger tu Hywind does, but it’s difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating middle of the ocean. To make that turbine heavier, th e whole spar’s centre of gravity must be moved much closer to the ocean ’s surface. To do that, the company plans to design a new kind of wind turwhose gearbox (变速箱变速箱变速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades () sits at sea level rather than behind the blades (see picture ).). Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large. Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. 试卷五(江苏省盐城中学2017届高三下学期开学考试)As adult learners, our very motivation for learning English can sometimes discourage our progress because we are focusing too much on the end result。

But the informal way in which children learn English—through music, games and fun activities-offers an environment in which they can learn and practise without worrying about the importance of it all. In turn, this relaxed attitude gives them confidence in learning English, setting them up for more opportunities in their academic pursuits and career options further down the line. Research has shown the positive impact bilingualism(双语能力) has on a child's cognitive(认知的) development and Catherine Ford, head teacher of Moreton First Prep School, says that children should begin learning as young as age three:“before children become self conscious they can try out their newly acquired languages without fear of embarrassment”。

Furthermore, around 50% of the world‟s population live in regions where the figure is now below the replacement level (i.e. 2.1 births per woman) and almost all developed nations are experiencing sub-replacement birth rate. You might think that developing nations would make up the loss(especially since 80% of the world‟s people now live in such nations), but you‟d be wrong. Declining birth rate is a major problem in many developing regions too, which might cause catastrophic global shortages of work force within a few decades. A great decline inyoung work force is likely to occur in China, for instance. What does it imply? First, China needs to undergo rapid economic development before a population zxxk decline hits the country. Second, if other factors such as technology remain constant, economic growth and material expectations will fall well below recent standards and this could invite trouble. Russia is another country with population problems that could break its economic promise. If current trends don‟t bend, Russia‟s population will be about the size of Yemen‟s by the year 2050. In the north of India, the population is booming due to high birth rates, but in the south, where most economic development is taking place, birth rate is falling rapidly. In a further twist, birth rate is highest in poorly educated rural areas and lowest in highly educated urban areas. In total, 25% of India‟s working-age population has no education. In 2030, a sixth of the country‟s potential work force could be totally uneducated. One solution is obviously to import foreign workers via immigration. As for the USA, it is almost unique among developed nations in having a population that is expected to grow by 20% from 2010—2030. Moreover, the USA has a track record of successfully accepting immigrants. As a result it‟s likely to see a rise in the size of its working-age population and to witness strong economic growth over the longer term. Population Change 71. 【答案】lower 【解析】根据"declining birthrate could be a defining one of the 21st"可知,21世纪的出生率比20世纪低,且much/ even/far/a lot/ a little等修饰比较级,故填lower。
