Will it make you work harder and face the difficulties more bravely because you know your ability, or will it make you become l azier because you know you’re already ahead? In a series of studies, Dweck and her team made experiment on 400 fifth graders from different parts of the United States.First, participants(参加者)were given a series of puzzles to test their IQ. After they finished their test, they were told their scores and praised in different ways. One group of participants were praised for their intelligence and were told -You got X number correct. That’s really good score. You must be very smart at this. Another group of pa rticipants were told, "You must have worked really hard." The students were then given a choice as to what kind of test they would take next. They could either take one that’s harder than the first one, or one that’s just as easy. A majority of the childre n who were praised for their intelligence chose to take the easy test whereas, 90% of those praised for their efforts chose to do the harder puzzles. While Dweck’s series of studies centered on children, it’s important to notice how having a particular mindset(心态)can influence you at any age. As someone with a fixed (固执的)mindset, you believe basic qualities—like-intelligence—are unchangeable. Since you are often praised for your intelligence, you want to continue remaining intelligent in the eyes of others so you shy away from challenges. However, as someone with a growth mindset you believe the harder you try, the more you’ll improve. You are not afraid of taking risks, even if there’s a big chance that you’ll all flat on your face along the way. More and more researches support the growth mindset," Dweck wrote in the journal Educational Leadership.“Basic aspects of intelligence can be strengthened through learning and adventures, and efforts and persistence in the face of challenges are key ingredients in o utstanding achievements.”Dweck’s studies teach us an important lesson about success. A person’s intelligence can only take him or her to certain distance. The rest of the way is paved by bravery and determination.37.What do Dweck and her team want to find out?A.The influence of praise on people. B.The IQ of each participant.C.The best way to achieve success. D.The positive influence of difficulties. 38.What can we learn from Paragnph 2 and 3?A.Participant received three experiments in total.B.Kids praised for their efforts later chose easier tests.C.One group of participants was smarter than the other group.D.Kids praised for their IQ later became afraid to fail.39.According to Paragraph 4, a man with a growth mindset ________.A.will go through much more failures B.is more likely to meet with difficulties C.is willing to challenge himself D.is more likely to become an educational leader40.The main purpose of the passage is to ________.A.give the reasons for the studies B.show the findings of the studies C.describe the weak points of the studies D.introduce the methods of the studies三、补全短文5选5The past years have shown we need to prepare for the worst earthquakes. My daughter Julianna told me that she got the job she had applied for. She had just turned 14 and decided to spend this summer vacation on work. The things she wants are both long-term and immediate. She wants to freely buy things from Forever21 and save money for the famous college she’s decided to get into.Several weeks before her birthday, Julianna asked me whether I’d allow her to work. Some of her friends’parents wouldn’t let their kids work, wanting them to focus on their studies and enjoy the last childhood freedom for as long as possible. I understood those parents. But I wanted her to spend less time on her electronic devices in her room and more time in the outside world. The day after her birthday, Julianna immediately applied to an amusement park, which hires teens during busy summer months. I’d never seen Julianna so active. The day before the interview, we went over possible questions, including why she wanted to work at the amusement park, its most famous attraction, and what her previous work and volunteering experiences were. She seldom talked about anything else until the interview was over.I never worked as a young teen. My husband, though, worked as a young teen at an amusement park. He shared some funny stories about his time working there. More importantly, the work contributed to his strong work ethic (道德准则) today. Studies also show that work can contribute to healthy development and that teens who work at times are more likely to attendfour-year colleges and get degrees quickly.Julianna used to be so careful about new experiences, but now she is doing something new.I realize it’s time to put aside my doubts and worries and believe she can learn the skills she needs to take care of herself.26.What was the writer’s expectation of her daughter?A.She could do better in her studies.B.She could pay much attention to her health.C.She could actively experience the real world.D.She could spend her free time in a relaxing way.27.What can we infer about Julianna from Paragraph 3?A.She took the interview very seriously.B.She wanted to improve the amusement park.C.She wished to work together with her mom.D.She had great confidence in getting the job.28.What does the writer stress by referring to her husband’s experience and the studies?A.The reason for her husband’s success.B.The joy of working at an amusement park.C.The relationship between work and education.D.The positive influence of early work experience.29.What is the best title for this passage?A.How my daughter developed a new hobbyB.How I accepted my daughter’s journey of growthC.How I guided my daughter through her life troublesD.How my daughter achieved freedom and independenceWilliam Butler Yeats, was an Irish poet and dramatist and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. He was born in Dublin on June 13,1865, His childhood lacked the harmony (和睦) that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.Yeats had strong faith in coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments however were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’s poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.Yeats is considered one of the few writers whose greatest works were completed after being awarded the Nobel Prize, which he won in 1923. He continued writing almost to the end of his life, producing his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, as there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between these ages. Such works include The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1929).After suffering from a variety of illnesses for several years, Yeats died in Menton, 1939. The last poem he wrote was the The Black Tower. After Yeats’s death, W. H. Auden wrote, among others, the falling liners:Earth, receive an honoured guest:William Yeats is laid to rest.Let the Irish vessel (船) lieEmptied of its poetry.30.What can you learn about Yeats’s family according to Paragraph 1?A.It was a happy family.B.It was shocked by Yeats’s choice.C.It was a typically wealthy family.D.It had an artistic atmosphere.31.What does the underlined word “inherited” (in paragraph 1) probably mean?A.failed to B.succeeded to C.gave up D.worried about 32.In what order did the following happen in Yeats’s life?a. However, according to a study conducted by the photo-sharing app Flashgap, millennials (千禧一代) are so addicted to social media that their real-time relationships are affected. The results have been confirmed by later studies. The study found that 87% of millennials are so busy surfing the Internet that they have completely missed out on face-to-face conversations. 54% worry that they will be left out if they don’t check theInternet quite often. And 76% of females check their social media accounts at least10 times while socializing with their friends.A study conducted this year shows that 42% of those who use social media admit to feeling jealous (妒忌的) when their blog posts don’t receive as many “likes” as their friends’. Posts and reactions to them can also make people feel less confident. Earlier this year, a number of millennials came together and discussed the influence of social media on their lives. Tedi Gilmartin, one of them, reported feeling really sad about her life because she saw her friends travelling and thought she should be doing that too.But for all the negative effects on people’s emotional well-being and relationships, there are some benefits. Gesell, for one, found that visiting social media sites inspired him to lose weight. All in all, different people have different views about social media. Some think they’re able to communicate with more people now than ever. Others think even with emojis, posts cannot convey some subtle (微妙的) ge stural clues that can be found in face-to-face conversations. These misunderstandings can lead to negative reactions and even the end of some relationships. There is obviously a healthy balance, but as social media takes over more and more of our lives, its more negative effects may appear.34.Why does the writer mention Flashgap at the beginning of the passage?A.To sell a kind of social software.B.To prove the popularity of social media.C.To stress the importance of social media.D.To present social media’s negative effects.35.What does the writer want to show by the numbers in Paragraph 2?A.Females like surfing the Internet more than males.B.Social media is making millennials less social.C.Millennials keep track of news updates every day.D.Chatting online is more convenient than chatting face to face.36.What effect of social media is stressed in Paragraph 3?A.Leading to negative emotions and mind.B.Enabling people to forget upsetting things.C.Recording interesting stories during journeys.D.Causing misunderstandings between friends.37.What’s the writer’s attitude towards social media?A.Critical.B.Positive.C.Worried.D.Uncertain.Being stuck at home doesn’t mean that learning stops. and the30or so others like it were exactly what Della was looking for.To celebrate her53rd,the long-time social service professional had put out a call on her blog. She wanted to commit53random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed information on people who could use one. When she got the note about the Smith family, she sent a wind chime(风铃)with the message“Listen to the wind and know that I am near”written on it.It now hangs in the four-year-old's bedroom, where his older brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants. This is not the first time that Della has decided to water levels for protection from enemies.Dams also slow water's flow while blocking sediment(沉积物)that would otherwise flow downstream. The resulting wetlands often attract wildlife diversity where none had existed. There are challenges, though.Beaver dams sometimes cause flooding, and most people prefer trees alive and upright.Communities face a delicate balancing act, learning to coexist with st winter, many people enjoying Winston Path became beaver fans as one furry family transformed Swallow Pond into an oasis for birds, frogs, turtles and deer.Yet such activity caused concern. As beavers worked, they raised water levels about five feet. The increased depth allows beavers to survive underwater if the pond ices over. But county officials were concerned about how higher water would affect the soil bank supporting Winston Path.To find a good balance between protecting the path and the beavers, the county introduced a“beaver baffle”—a pond leveler.Beavers often rush to fill holes in their dams.Baffles stabilize water levels by creating a hidden exit for high water to escape through the dam, unnoticed by the beavers.People love the beavers but they also love the mature trees.Recently,Catherine Jones,18, organized a tree-caging event—putting wire cloth around large tree trunks to discourage beavers from biting them.It also protects people from injury due to random trees falling.“We cover the trees we don't want them to eat, while planting periodically others they like,"said Jones.“We need-to learn to give up a little of our wants to share the Earth's resources.”Swallow Pond's2023project will restore proper water depth and improve wildlife habitatwithout creating problems for the path. The balancing act continues.28.What is the first paragraph mainly about?A.Where beavers'favorite surroundings are.B.What effects beavers have on their habitat.C.Why beavers are called nature's engineers.D.How beavers help attract wildlife diversity.29.Why did underlined words“beaver baffle”refer to in paragraph4?A.A block to keep beavers away.B.A tool to fix holes in the dams.C.A device to maintain water level.D.A material to protect the soil bank.31.What is the theme of Swallow Pond's2023project?A.Biological diversity.B.Harmonious coexistence.C.Prevention of natural disasters.D.Preservation of wildlife habitat.DSome bacteria(细菌)have a superpower that scientists would love to use. These bacteria gain energy from light, just as plants do.Scientists have wanted to use cyanobacteria(蓝藻菌)to make electricity. But in previous research, they didn't survive long on artificial surfaces.Researchers have now moved them to a living surface—a mushroom.Their creation is the first mushroom to make electricity.Applied Physicist Simon Jackson and his team turned that mushroom into a mini energy farm. This bionic(生物电子的)mushroom combines3D printing, conductive ink and bacteria to generate electricity. Its design could lead to new ways of combining nature with electronics. Like plants, cyanobacteria make their own food from sunlight, releasing electrons(电子). When enough electrons build up in one place, they can create an electric current. The researchers needed to bring a lot of these bacteria together. They decided to use3D printing to place them precisely onto a surface.Jackson's team chose mushrooms for that surface. After all, they realized, mushrooms naturally host communities of bacteria and other microbes.Finding test subjects for their tests was easy.Jackson simply went to the grocery store and picked up white button mushrooms.Printing on those mushrooms, though, turned out to be a real challenge.3D printers have been designed to print on flat surfaces, but mushroom caps are curved. The researchers spent months writing computer code to solve the problem.Eventually, they came up with a program to3D print their ink onto the curved mushroom tops. The researchers printed two“inks”onto their mushrooms. One was a green ink made of cyanobacteria. They used this to make a spiral pattern on the cap. They ed a black ink made of graphene, which is great at conducting electricity. They printed this ink in a branching pattern across the mushroom top. Then it was time to shine.“Cyanobacteria are the real heroes here,”says Jackson. When his team shone light on the mushrooms, the bacteria gave out electrons. Those electrons flowed into the graphene and created an electric current.32.What was the problem in previous research?A.Cyanobacteria didn't produce electrons.B.Cyanobacteria couldn't get enough light.C.The researchers chose the wrong bacteria.D.No suitable home was made for cyanobacteria.33.Why were mushrooms finally chosen as test subjects?A.They are convenient to find.B.They can produce electric currents.C.They are where bacteria can naturally grow.D.They can be easily combined with3D printing.34.What is the major function of the black ink in this test?A.To feed bacteria.B.To deliver electrons.C.To produce electricity.D.To reshape mushroom tops.35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A.Who are the real heroes?B.New application of3D printingC.Nature combined with electronsD.Bionic mushroom makes electricity第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

However, despite numerous efforts, scientists had been unable to determine the source of folium, a popular blue dye used to color1 manuscripts (手稿) in Europe during the middle ages — from the 5th to the 15th century. Now, a team of researchers fromPortugalhas finally uncovered the mysterious ingredient responsible for the gorgeous blueish-purple color1 that helped bring ancient illustrations and texts to life. The research team began byporing overinstructions penned by European dye makers from the 12th, 14th, and 15th centuries. They found what they were seeking in a 15th-century text entitledThe Book on How to Make All the Color Paints for Illuminating Books. However, translating the instructions was no easy task. It was written in the now extinct Judaeo-Portuguese language, and though the source of the dye was traced back to a plant, no name was mentioned. However, by piecing together suggestions from the text, the scientists were able to determine that the dye was made from the bluish-green berries of the chrozophora tinctoria plant. After an extensive search, the team found a few varieties of the plant growing along the roadside near the town ofMonsarazin southPortugal. The detailed instructions gave the researchers critical clues — including the best time to pick the berries. “You need to squeeze the fruits, being careful not to break the seeds, and then to put them on linen (亚麻).” The scientist says the detail was important since broken seeds polluted the pigment, producing an inferior quality ink. The dyed linen, which was left to dry, was an efficient way to store and transport the pigment during ancient times. When needed, the artist would simply cut off a piece of the cloth and dip it with water to squeeze out the blue color1 .Once the key ingredient had been identified, the researchers began to determine the dye’s molecular structure. To their surprise, they found that folium was not like any other known permanent blue dyes — it was an entirely new class of color1 , one they named chrozophoridin. “Chrozophoridin was used in ancient times to make a beautiful blue dye for painting.” the team wrote in the study. “Thus, we believe that this will not be our final word on this amazing plant and its story and that further discoveries will follow soon.”8. The primary purpose of the study is to ________.A. restore and conserve ancient precious artworksB. determine the substance making up the foliumC. prove the ancient dye-making technique was organicD. identify which class of color1 folium belongs to9. The underlined phrase “poring over”in the second paragraph means ________.A. discussing publiclyB. testing repeatedlyC. passing directlyD. reading carefully10. What can be learned about the blue dye folium?A. It was essentially an inferior type of ink.B. It was the only kind made from wild berries.C. It could be carried and used easily.D. It was carefully squeezed from broken seeds.11. The article is mainly about _________.A. how the mystery ofa thousand-year-old blue dye was solvedB. why the researchers took the trouble to recreate the dyeC. what needs to be done to make an organic dye from a plantD. when and where the discovery of the dye was madeDBrown cows may not actually make chocolate milk, but pink silkworms(蚕)do produce pink silk, a team of scientists has discovered. To see if they could produce pre-dyed silk-silk that comes color1 ed, straight from the source-the team fed ordinary silkworms mulberry(桑树)leaves that had been sprayed(喷洒)with fabric(织物)dyes(染色剂). Out of seven tested dyes, only one worked, producing a thread that reminded me of pink-dyed hair. And yes, the worms themselves take on some color1 before they produce silk. Their color1 ful diets did not affect their growth, the team, which included engineers and biologists from the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory in India, reports in the journalACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. (The researchers didn't look too deeply into how the dyes affected the silkworms' health. After all, silkworms die when people harvest their silk.)The team made dyeing silk this way because color1 ing fabric normally uses large amounts of fresh water. The water gets polluted with dangerous chemicals in the process, requiring costly treatment before factories can send it back into waterways. Dyeing silk directly by feeding silkworms would avoid those water-washing steps. Scientists are just starting to study this idea. However, it remains to be seen if it's commercially successful. In this experiment, the Indian team tested seven dyes, which are cheap and popular in the industry. The scientists found different dyes moved through silkworms' bodies differently. Some never made it into the worms' silk at all. Others color1 ed the worms and their silk but the color1 disappears before the silk is turned into fabric. Only one dye, named "direct acid fast red", showed up in the final, washed silk threads. By the time it made it there, it was a pleasant, light pink.12. The text is most probably a(n) ________.A. science reportB. tourist guideC. animal experimentD. fashion advertisement13. Silkworms can produce pink silk because ________.A. they are born pinkB. they are dyed pinkC. they grow in pink waterD. they are fed dyed food14. Where is the experiment carried out?A. In America.B. In India.C. In Israel.D. In China.15. How many dyes have been proved successful in the experiment?A. One.B. Three.C. Five.D. Seven.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

On October 5, Katmai National Park and Preserve in southern Alaska kicked off Fat Bear Week, when fans compare before and after photos of bears to vote for the one they think has gained the most weight before they bed down for the long freezing winter. Bear 747, also known as “Bear Force One”, took the first-place spot with 68, 105 votes. It weighed around 1, 400 pounds.Fat Bear Week started in 2014. At first, it was just Fat Bear Tuesday. Mike Fitz, a former park keeper at Katmai, noticed that live webcams showing the bears generated a lot of online comments, so he let people vote for their favorite fat bear on the Internet. The one-day event attracted 1, 700 votes. In 2015, it was extended to a week. Last year, nearly 800, 000 people got involved, turning it into a global campaign. The contest serves two main purposes. First, some of America's national parks are in remote and undeveloped areas, which are difficult or costly to reach. Fat Bear Week brings Alaska's wil-derness to fans' computer screens. “It's not limited to the fortunate few who can go to the river anymore. ” Fitz said.Second, Fat Bear Week brings attention to the bears and the ecosystems they live in. The 2, 200 bears of Katmai are strong for feeding on some of the healthiest salmon (三文鱼) in the world, said Sara Wolman, a former park keeper. Salmon in the Pacific Northwest are suffering from overfishing, dam construction and warming rivers due to climate change. Luckily, Brooks River, which Katmai's bears like to fish in, has been free from these threats so far.Fat Bear Week has spread like viruses. Fans and creators say it’s because it shows a conserva-tion success story. For one week, people don't have to focus on climate change or habitat loss. “ Maybe things aren't super great all the time in the world, " said Felicia Jimenez, who is a current Katmai keeper. “But there are some really fat bears in Alaska. ”24. Why was Bear 747 the winner?A. It was the heaviest.B. It was the most famous.C. It gained the most pounds.D. It presented the best photos.25. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?A. They bring tourists to the park.B. They have a stable food source.C. They remain difficult to be seen.D. They face a population decline.27. Which can be the best title for the text?A. Fat Bear Week: Conservation Is JoyfulB. Brown Bears: Winter Survival Is CrucialC. Bear 747: A Fat Yet Healthy ChampionD. Katmai's Bears: A Special Beauty ContestCA new study has found that a child's reading speed can be improved by simply increasing the space between letters within a piece of text. The research, led by Dr Steven Stagg of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), examined the benefits of letter spacing and coloured overlays (颜色标注)among children. Two groups of children, dyslexic (有阅读障碍的)and non-dyslexic children, were asked to read four texts with either standard or extra-large letter spacing, both with and without a coloured overlay. They were instructed to read the text out loud while being recorded. The recording was used to measure the number of errors they made - specifically missed words, added words, wrong words, and pronunciation - as well as the participants' reading time. The study discovered that text with increased space between letters provided a benefit for both groups. On average, the dyslexia group showed a 13% increase in reading speed, while the group of non-dyslexic children showed a 5% increase. In addition to improving reading speed, it also resulted in a significant decline in the number of words missed by the children with dyslexia. However, the study found that coloured overlays had no significant impact on reading speed or the reduction of errors for either group.Dr Stagg, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at ARU, said: “We believe extra-large letter spacing works by reducing what is known as the ‘crowding effect’, which can hamper the recognition of letters and red uce reading speed. ”“Our findings strongly suggest that teachers can be confident that all children would be helped by increased letter spacing in reading materials. ” Dr Stagg added. “While we found that coloured overlays provided little benefit, we suggest children should be encouraged to use overlays if they find these help their reading. Coloured overlays may not increase reading speeds, but they may extend reading stamina (持久力). Previous research suggests their benefits may not become ap-parent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the short reading duration of the tests in our study may have put coloured overlays at a disadvantage.28. Which of the following best describes the research process in paragraph 2?A. Illustrate, group and report.B. Read, instruct and measure.C. Question, assume and prove.D. Categorize, record and count.29. What can we learn about increased letter spacing from paragraph 3?A. It reduces reading errors.B. It sharpens reading skills.C. It arouses reading interest.D. It enhances reading comprehension.30. What does the underlined word “hamper” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A. Obtain.B. Prevent.C. Change.D. Involve.31. What can be inferred about coloured overlays from paragraph 5?A. They might not have been evaluated fairly.B. They might not be recommended by experts.C. They might work better in short reading.D. They might have some disadvantages.DLike any doctor, Jacques Fellay wants to give his patients the best care. Hidden inside our bodies are genetic (基因的)markers that can tell him which patients could probably have dis-eases such as AIDS and provide early treatments. However, there are worries for Fellay: they con-tain sensitive details that could lead to embarrassment, discrimination or even worse.A new kind of encryption, fully homomorphic encryption (FHE)(全同态加密),is mak-ing it possible for data users to run multiple operations on genetic data without seeing the contents. This can help end big data’s privacy problem, and Fellay’s patients can be some of the first to benefit. In 1978, the concept of homomorphic encryption (HE) was firstly proposed. According to it, one could encrypt and share data with others, who could analyze and perform calculations on the data with no idea what it means. After getting the data back, the data user could simply arrive at the result using the secret key and it will make total sense. In 2009, Craig Gentry firstly provided a workable FHE program. Like HE, it rests on a math-ematical idea called a homomorphism, which mostly relies on using algebra (代数)to map data from one form to another without changing its underlying structure. However, it supports mul-tiple operations on encrypted data, rather than only one calculation in HE.Later, Gentry went on to work at IBM, which now has complicated FHE tools to run encrypted data. In the medical field, for example, it detected signs of COVID-19 infection by applying FHE to analyze the encrypted CT scans of more than 1, 500 people's lungs. In a paper published in Oc-tober 2021, the team used FHE to collect data from multiple sources and predicted the effect of cancer treatments or the process of HIV infection, as in Fellay’s case.Workable, but still slow: calculations on the FHE-encrypted data could take millions of times longer than those on raw data. But, as Goldwasser says, “If you believe that security is not a plus, but it’s a must, ” she says, “then in some sense there is no overhead. ”32. What is Fellay concerned about?A. Serious diseases.B. Sensitive patients.C. The safety of personal data.D. The lack of genetic information.33. In what way is FHE different from HE?A. It speeds up the analyses.B. It allows more calculations.C. It prevents direct access to data.D. It depends on the use of algebra.34. What is Goldwasser’s attitude towards FHE?A. Contradictory.B. Unclear.C. Favorable.D. Intolerant.35. What is the main idea of the text?A. FHE protects privacy in the big data era.B. FHE opens a new world for medical workers.C. Gentry proposed a new encryption technology.D. Homomorphic encryption developed over time.第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

I'm going to tell you all about the different sections and some of the questions. Maybe it will help get you ready for the next test! The listening part was first, like always. I thought it was pretty tough. There were conversations between people ordering food, buying tickets, and making plans. You had to listen carefully and choose the right picture or answer the questions. One conversation was between a mom and dad deciding what activity to do with their kids on the weekend. I got tripped up on that one because the dad said he wanted to go to the science museum, but then the mom suggested going to the zoo instead. Tricky! Then there were some longer listening passages, like a teacher talking about school rules and a tour guide describing an historic building. Those were hard because there were so manydetails to remember. I tried writing down little notes as I listened to help me. The last listening篇22023 Guangzhou Mock Exam English Paper AnalysisHi everyone! I'm an elementary school student and I just took the 2023 Guangzhou Mock Exam for English. It was pretty tough but I'll share my thoughts on the different sections.ListeningThe listening part had some tricky questions this year. There were conversations between friends making plans, teachers giving instructions, and even a news report about a science event. You really had to pay close attention to get all the details right. One conversation was about two friends deciding where to go for summer vacation. The boy wanted to go camping but the girl preferred staying in a hotel near the beach. There were questions about what each person preferred and the reasons why. It was hard to remember all the reasons they gave!Another conversation involved a mom reminding her son about his chores and schedule for the upcoming week. Therewere a lot of specific details like days, times, and tasks to keep track of. I had to listen very carefully to get those right. For the news report, it was about a new hands-on science museum opening in the city. They described some of the interactive exhibits and shows that would be available. The questions focused on the different areas of the museum and what visitors could experience there.Overall, the listening section required excellent concentration. You had to catch key details from different sources of information. Missing one small thing could lead to getting a question wrong.ReadingAs for the reading, there were some longer passages that took patience to get through carefully. One was about the history and modern Production of silk products in a certain country. It had interesting facts but a lot of descriptive paragraphs to follow.Another reading was more storytelling, a traditional folktale from a particular culture. While it had an engaging plotline, there were some idioms and expressions that could be confusing ifyou didn't recognize them from that culture's style of storytelling. There was also a one-page information sheet all about quirky laws in different places around the world. Some of those law examples were pretty funny but you still had to read closely to clearly understand what each law prohibited or required. The reading questions ranged from identifying specific details and facts to making inferences and determining the author's tone or purpose for certain sections. You really had to read actively and think critically to do well on this part.WritingFor the writing task, we had to write a short story based on some pictures that were provided. The pictures showed different scenes like a boy looking at trophies on a shelf, the same boy kicking a soccer ball, and a player receiving a medal. To build the narrative, we had to make assumptions about the meaning behind each picture and how they all connected in a logical sequence of events. We needed an engaging introduction, descriptive body paragraphs fleshing out the storyline, and a satisfying conclusion to wrap it all up.The challenging part was creating smooth transitions between the different moments depicted in the pictures. We also had to be sure to include sufficient relevant details, adjectives, and imagery to develop the story in a vivid, coherent way. This writing section definitely required strong skills in organizing ideas, using descriptive language, and developing a creative storyline from a set of visual prompts. It was not easy but good practice overall.SpeakingThen there was the speaking section which involved different tasks as well. One task showed a picture related to a certain topic and we had to speak about that topic using the picture as a starting point. For example, one picture showed kids volunteering to do community gardening, so the prompt was to speak about the importance of community service and how it benefits everyone involved. We had to logically organize and elaborate on our key points while directly referencing relevant details from the picture provided.Another speaking task gave us an opinion about something to consider, like "Playing individual sports is more beneficial forkids than team sports." We had to state whether we agreed or disagreed with that opinion, then provide convincing reasons and examples to justify our stance on the issue. The speaking required not just knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, but the ability to think critically, form coherent arguments, provide relevant details, and speak fluidly without too much pausingorfiller words.Overall ThoughtsPhew! That 2023 mock exam covered all the skills - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. There was a good mix of questions testing different abilities like comprehension, inference, analyzing evidence, explaining thoughts, and more. While some parts were pretty tricky, I feel good about the effort I gave and strategies I used, like underlining key words in the listening, reading passages extra carefully, planning out my writing thoroughly, and practicing my spoken responses a few times before recording.I'm sure I made some mistakes here and there, but trying my best is what counts. These mock exams are excellent practice to get me prepared for the real tests later on. I have a clearer sense now of which specific skills I need to continue improving.English is a journey andI'mexcited to keep working hard, learning new things, and having fun with the language alongthe way. Until next year's mock exam! Thanks for reading my thoughts!篇3The 2023 English Exam - A Kid's BreakdownHi everyone! I'm Xiao Ming, a 5th grader who just took the big Guangzhou mock English exam. Boy, was it tough! But I'll do my best to walk you through the whole thing. The exam had different sections testing different skills. Let's start with the listening part. There were recordings of conversations and passages that we had to answer questions about. One conversation was between two friends deciding what movie to watch. The questions asked stuff like what genre of movie they wanted and what showtime they picked. To answer correctly, you really had to pay close attention to all the details they mentioned. Then there were some longer recordings about topics like a school field trip and a kid's science fair project. Those had more questions testing if we understood the main ideas and supporting details. My teacher always reminds us to listen forkey words and not get distracted. Sounds easy, but with the recording going so fast, it was pretty hard! The reading section came next. We had to read some passages and answer comprehension questions, just like we practice in class. One passage was about the history of ice cream, which was kind of fun and interesting to learn about. But man, some of those vocabulary words were super difficult! Words like "indulgence" and "concoction" that I've never even heard of before. The questions would ask things like what certain words meant based on the context, or what the main idea of a paragraph was. To be honest, I kind of got stuck on a few of those and had to take my best guess. The passages got harder towards the end too, with more complex sentences and harder vocabulary. After the reading, we had to write a short essay responding to a prompt. The prompt asked us to write a letter to our future self ten years from now. We had to include details about our current life, hopes and dreams for the future, and any advice we'd give our older self.I made sure to follow the structure we learned - an introduction paragraph stating the main points, bodyparagraphs with supporting details, and a conclusion restating the key ideas. Using good examples and transition words was important too. The hardest part was trying to think of wise advice to give my future self! I wrote stuff like "study hard" and "be a good person," but I'm not sure how inspiring that was.The last part tested our grammar, vocabulary, and usage skills. We had to read sentences with blanks and choose the correct word to fill in the blank from multiple choices. Lots of questions on things like verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, prepositions, and confusing words like their/they're/there. I've always struggled with grammar, so I definitely made some careless mistakes in this section. There were also questions giving us a short paragraph and asking us to fix an error, like an incorrect verb form or a missing article. Those were pretty tricky because you had to read super carefully to catch the mistake. And of course, vocabulary matching where you had to pick the word that matched a given definition.Phew, that's pretty much the whole test in a nutshell! Overall, I felt okay about the listening and writing sections, but the reading comprehension passages and grammar/vocabularyparts were really hard for me. I'm just crossing my fingers that I did enough to pass.My best advice for anyone taking this test is to just keep practicing all your English skills - reading lots of books, listening to songs/shows, writing as much as you can, and studying those grammar rules. The more you use English, the more natural and easy it becomes. Don't be afraid to ask your teacher for extra help too.Well, that's my exhausting experience with the big exam! I'll leave the scoring and analytics of the test to the teachers and experts. As for me, I'm just looking forward to recharging over summer break. Maybe I'll watch an English movie or read some new books to keep those skills sharp. Gotta be ready for more English adventures next year! Let me know if you have any other questions!篇4The 2023 Guangzhou English Exam Was Really Hard!Hi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm in 5th grade. I just took the big English exam for our region and it was super tough. But I studied really hard and I think I did okay. Let me tell you all about it!The exam had four sections - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The listening part was first. We had to listen to recordings and answer multiple choice questions about what we heard. Some of the recordings were conversations between people, while others were just one person talking. For the conversations, you had to pay close attention to catch all the details about who said what. The hardest one was two friends arguing about which movie to watch. They kept going back and forth and I got a little confused tracking their different opinions. The passages with just one person speaking were mostly easier for me. One was someone giving instructions on how to make an origami bird. As long as I focused, I could follow the steps pretty well. Another one that stumped me was a documentary about wild pandas. It used some really advanced vocabulary that I didn't fully understand. After listening, we moved right into the reading section. This was my favorite part because I love reading! We had all different kinds of passages - stories, articles, advertisements, you name it. My personal favorite was a funny comic strip about a mischievous cat.The articles were a little more hit-or-miss for me. There was one about the history of soccer that went over my head with all the dates and facts. But another one about a kid inventor was really interesting and easy to follow. The questions aboutthe readings ranged from pretty straightforward stuff like "What happened first?" to more complex inferences and author's purpose types of queries. Those are the ones I struggled with the most since you really had to read between the lines. We also had to answer some vocabulary questions based on how certain words were used in the passages. Luckily, my teachers drilled us a lot on those kinds of context clues this year.Next up was the writing section - my personal nemesis! We had two tasks for this part. First was writing an email to a friend about a book we read recently. I picked my favorite book from class, The BFG by Roald Dahl, and did my best to summarize the wacky plot. The second writing was more open-ended. We had to give our opinion on whether kids should have more recess time during the school day. I argued hard that we absolutely should since unstructured playtime helps kids learn better when they go back to class. Hopefully my reasons were convincing enough! The very last part was speaking. We had to answer questions from a test scorer directly and also do a presentation. My questions were about my hobbies and what I like to do for fun after school. I tried to be very specific and detailed by talking about my favorite sports, video games, and other activities. For the presentation, I had one minute to prepare and then talk for around two minutes on the topic of my favorite teacher. I chose my English teacher of course because she's the best! I covered how she always makes lessons fun with games and group work, plus howpatient and caring she is when any of us need extra help.Phew, that's a rundown of the big test! Some parts were easier than others for me, but it definitely challenged me to use all my English skills. I gave it my best effort and I'm just happy it's over with now.My advice for anyone else facing a difficult English exam is: don't panic, review what you've learned, get a good night's sleep, and most importantly, believe in yourself! You've got this! That's all from me. Hope this inside look at the exam was helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions.篇5The 2023 Guangzhou Mock Exam: An Elementary Kid's TakeWhew, that Guangzhou mock exam was really something! As an 8-year-old elementary school student, I found some parts pretty tricky, but other parts were a piece of cake. Let me break it down for you section by section:ListeningThe listening part was probably the hardest for me. My little ears had trouble catching all the words, especially when the speakers talked really fast. The conversation about the family trip was okay, but that lecture on photosynthesis totally lost me halfway through! I really need to work on focusing my listening skills. That said, the picture questions where we had to listen and point out the right image were pretty fun. I rocked those ones by using the context clues from the descriptions. Maybe they can make the whole listening like that next year? A kid can dream!ReadingOkay, now we're talking! The reading was my strongest section for sure. I loved the story about the two friends who went camping and got lost in the woods. It reminded me of my own backyard adventures. The vocabulary wasn't too crazy, and thequestions about the main idea and the characters' feelings were straightforward. The other passages about ancient civilizations and environmental protection were a little more challenging though. There were some words I'd never heard of, like "deforestation" and "urbanization." But I tried my best to use context clues and my prior knowledge to figure out the main points. My reading skills still need more practice, but fictional stories are my reading happy place. More fun camping tales please, exam writers!WritingThey really put us through the wringer on the writing this time around. First there was that letter to a friend describing our favorite teacher. Oof, that was hard to organize! I couldn't decide whether to focus more on her personality quirks or why her lessons were so engaging. I probably rambled a bit trying to fit it all in.Then the short essay question about how to reduce waste at school...man, that one really took some brainstorming. I know reducing, reusing, and recycling are important, but putting it allinto a clear main idea and structured body paragraphs was tricky. Transitions are not my forte yet.At least we didn't have to write a whole story this time! My fiction writing needs some serious work. Maybe next year's exam can have us write a fairy tale though? That would be right up my alley as a kid author.GrammarAh grammar, the bane of my English-learning existence. All those rules about verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and more...it's enough to make my head spin! I've got the basics down okay, but anytime they threw in a very specific grammar point I haven't fully mastered yet, I started second-guessing myself. The sentence correction and fill-in-the-blank sections were rough for me. I'm still shaky on using the perfect tenses correctly in certain contexts. And ranks and possessives? Forget about it! I was totally guessing on most of those. At least with the error identification questions, I could lean on my ear for what "sounds right" to a native speaker. Small victories, right? Grammar will just take lots more practice for this elementary kid.Overall, the 2023 Guangzhou mock exam checked all the skills! Listening, reading, writing, grammar...it was a balanced test of where my English is currently at. Some parts went way better than others, but that's how we learn. There were some questions that felt too hard for kids my age, at least in my opinion. But there were also plenty that let me show off what I know in a fun, engaging way. As long as I work hard and keep exploring awesome English books, music, movies, and more, I'll be ready to knock the next exam out of the park! Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go practice my writing skills by working on the next chapter of my epic novel about crime-fighting hamsters in space...篇6The 2023 Guangzhou Mock Exam English Test - A Kid's BreakdownHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 5th grader here in Guangzhou. A few weeks ago, we had to take the annual mock English exam. Now that I've gotten my score back, I want to share my thoughts on the test with all of you!Overall, I found this year's test pretty challenging but fair. There were some sections that really made me scratch my head, but others that felt just right for kids my age. Let me break it down section by section:ListeningThe listening part had us wear those big headphones and listen to different conversations and passages. I always get a little nervous during this section because you only get to hear each one twice! This year, there were recordings about a brother and sister arguing over video games, a teacher explaining a class field trip, and even one about a talking parrot! Those were pretty fun topics that kept me engaged. My biggest struggle was keeping up with all the details like names, dates, and specific instructions. By the second listening, my brain was spinning trying to catch everything! I definitely need to keep practicing my listening skills. All in all though, the listening questions seemed reasonable for a 5th grader. Maybe a couple were a tiny bit tricky, but nothing too crazy. I'm just glad we didn't have to transcribe full conversations!ReadingAh yes, the reading section - my archnemesis! I find it really hard to concentrate for so many passages in a row. This year there were readings about:A biography of a famous scientistThe history of pokerDescribing the features of a rainforestA short fiction storyYikes, after powering through all of those, my eyes were about to fall out of my head! The questions showed no mercy either, grilling us on vocab in context, making inferences, and identifying writers' purposes.I have to admit, I struggled a bit with the poker one because of all the terminology I wasn't familiar with. But the rainforest passage played nicely into some topics we'd learned about in science class. As much as I huffed and puffed through it, I'll give it to the test makers - they picked some engaging subject matter to keep things interesting instead of just boring textbook stuff.WritingRaise your hand if you love... ESSAYS! Yeah, me neither. The writing task this year was to write a short story about getting lost in the city and how we eventually found our way back.Talk about a panic-inducing prompt! I spent probably 15 minutes just racking my brain about an exciting plot before I could even start writing.Once I shook off the nerves though, I tried my best to construct a dramatic tale complete with vibrant character descriptions, dialogue, a climactic getting-lost scene, and an uplifting lesson at the end. Phew!In my opinion, the rubric for scoring these story writings needs to cut kids a little slack. I poured so much creativity into my story, but then got nitpicked for grammar errors and not following some arbitrary structure. Like okay Mrs. Test Maker, sorry I'm not Shakespeare! At the end of the day though, I was proud of the narrative I crafted and know I did my best.GrammarEvery student's favorite... said no kid ever! This grammar section put us through the ringer with:Verb tenses and subject-verb agreementParallel sentence structure rulesPronoun usageModifiers and tricky word orderI've got to hand it to my English teachers - they definitely prepped us well for this part of the test. While it wasn't exactly a walk in the park, I could see connections between the grammar rules we'd practiced and most of the questions. That said, there were a handful of questions that went into some really advanced grammar concepts that even made me go "huh?!" Maybe it's just me, but I think those could have been scaled back a bit for 5th graders.Overall though, if you've been diligent with your grammar lessons, this section should have been very manageable.Phew! That's my full debrief on this absolute unit of an English test. Was it perfect? No way. Did it make me want to take up basket weaving instead of English? Maybe for a few minutes. But at the end of the day, it did a decent job evaluating where us Guangzhou kids are at with our English skills. My advice to all my fellow students is to just keep studying hard, don't psyche yourselves out, and make sure to eat a goodbreakfast before the test next year! Thinkingabout that listening section is already giving me hunger pains...Let me know if you agreed or disagreed with my thoughts! And stay tuned for my take on the math test...。

Pass through within 10 minutes.BDujiangyan is the oldest man-made water system in the world, and a wonder in the development of Chinese science. Built over 2, 200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6, 000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide water for 50 cities in the province. In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands suffered from regular floods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region’s governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. They studied the problem and discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at the top of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the weather warmed. The simplest fix was to build a dam, but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it suitable for farming.Cutting the channels through the hard rock of Mount Yulei was a remarkable accomplishment as it was done long before the invention of gunpowder and explosives. Li Bing found another solution. He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed. I applaud Mr. Gates. But what’s taking us so long?As early as 1997, MIT(麻省理工)decide to post videos of all university lectures online, for free, for all people. But today, how many students have you met who mastered advanced mathematics or nuclear physics from an MIT online video? Unfortunately, the answer is not many. The problem is the poor quality of online education websites and the experience they provide to students. Those who go to the MIT website and watch courses online are surely very smart people, but it’s not like playing a video game such as World of Warcraft. Only the most ardent students, those who are highly motivated, will devote themselves to studying these boring online videos. The real question is why er aren’t spending more to develop better online education platforms. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion: ethos, pathos, and logos.Ethos is a speaker’s way of convincing the audience that she is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education she has in the field. After all, you’re more likey to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman. A speaker can also create ethos by convincing the audience that she is a good person. If an audience cannot trust you, you will not be able to persuade them.Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with an audience’s emotions. For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them support him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dos and cats, to make the viewers feel pity. If the audience feels bad for the animals, they ill be more likely to donate money.Logos is the use of facts, statistics, or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will be more likely to believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me”.Although ethos, pathos, and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. Indeed, most speakers use a combination of ethos, pathos, and logs to persuade their audiences so, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial, or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.32. Why does the author say persuasion is an art?A. They both entertain the audience.B. They both require great skill to achieve.C. They both demand full attention from the audience.D. What can we learn about the three aspects of persuasion?A. Ethos is the most important aspect of persuasion.B. Each aspect has a different effect on the audience.C. Honesty is the key to making your arguments believable.D. Political leaders mostly use pathos to persuade their audience.35.
