On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group, this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter. The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming. The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."11. The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements exceptthat_____.A. they should be easy to make friends withB. they must swim outdoors at least 8 times in the four cold monthsC. they must agree to swim outdoors from November through FebruaryD. they must reach the age of 6012. Doctors _____.A. encourage people to take part in cold-water swimming activelyB. point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimmingC. believe swimming is helpful both in winter and in summerD. have different ideas about the medical effects of cold-water swimming13. According to the passage, some doctors believe it is true that _____.A. you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns your skin color blueB. cold-water swimming causes more heart attacks in summer than in winterC. cold-water swimming can make the body temperature dangerously highD. Polar Bears are bears swimming in freezing water14. The Polar Bears like to swim all the year round, for _____.A. they can remain youngB. it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winterC. they find it enjoyable and interestingD. they might meet fewer troubles in life15. The passage is mainly about _____.A. a group of cold-water swimming loversB. the Polar Bears' life in New YorkC. doctors' ideas about cold-water swimmingD. the requirements of the Polar Bear ClubPassage 2Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country's economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the well-being (health and happiness) of local inhabitants.Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country's economy can suffer. On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose) jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities needed by tourists attractions. Forexample, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.16. Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the paragraph that goes before this passage?A) Support facilities are highly necessary.B) Building roads and hotels is essential.C) It is extremely important to develop tourism.D) Planning is of great importance to tourism.17. Too much tourism can cause all these problems EXCEPT ___________.A) pressure on trafficB) a change of tourists' customsC) overcrowdedness of places of interestD) a bad effect on other industries18. Not enough tourism can lead to ______________.A) an increase of unemploymentB) the higher cost of support facilitiesC) a decrease in tourist attractionsD) a rise in price and a fall in pay19. It is good for local people to know well that tourism will ______________.A) use up a large amount of waterB) help establish their customsC) weaken their economyD) help improve their life20. The word "handle" in the last paragraph most probably means ___________.A) deal with B) get in C) take down D) pick upPassage 3Many people with ordinary jobs may dream of long holidays in foreign countries, but they know they couldn't afford them even if they could get enough time off from the company. However, there are a few businesses which have started schemes to reward employees with long service by giving them a chance to fulfill such ambitions by providing both the time andthe money. One company gives every employee over 50 years old and who has been with them for 25 years, six months' holiday on full pay. At the same time additional money can be made available by way of loans, to help them with projects they cannot otherwise offer. Most of the people who have already benefited from the scheme, have used the opportunity to travel to distant places like the Far East or South America and some have spent the money on their favorite hobbies, such as photography. The cost of providing these special holidays is fairly high but the directors feel it is well worthwhile because the employees are greatly refreshed by their long break from the pressures and routines of their jobs. The only problems are that the people concerned tend to have key jobs which can be difficult to fill on a temporary basis for a relatively long time. Besides, some employees find it difficult to re-adjust to the old routine after such a long time away. In addition, one or two people may not feel secure at leaving their job in someone else's hands. On balance, however, there is no doubt that the idea is beneficial to industrial relations and a wonderful reward for long service.21. Many workers would like to ___________.A) dream of long holidays at homeB) spend a long time in unusual placesC) buy a holiday away from homeD) have a long holiday after many years22. One company____________.A) gives money to employees over 25 yearsB) lends staff money to go on holidaysC) allows long holidays to certain staffD) arranges long holidays for old employees23. Most of the employees in the scheme ____________.A) enjoy leisure activities B) develop their hobbiesC) take up photography D) take foreign trips24. The directors feel that _____________.A) the staff get a lot of pleasures from the schemeB) older staff are very enthusiastic about holidaysC) the scheme is more expensive than they expectedD) the scheme is beneficial to staff relations25. One of the problems is that ________________.A) it is difficult to fill a temporary jobB) some employees are afraid of their colleaguesC) it is difficult for some people to re-adjust to the old routine after a long breakD) employees don't feel secure when they are awayPassage 4If U.S. software companies don't pay more attention to quality, they could kiss their business good-bye. Both India and Brazil are developing a world-class software industry. Their weapon is quality and one of their jobs is to attract the top U.S. quality specialists whose voices are not listened to in their country.Already, of the world's 12 software houses that have earned the highest rating in the world, seven are in India. That's largely because they have used new methodologies rejected by American software specialists. For example, for decades, quality specialists, W. Edwards Deming and J. M. Juran had urged U.S. software companies to change their attitudes to quality. But their quality call mainly fell on deaf ears in the U.S. -but not in Japan. By the 1970s and 1980s, Japan was grabbing market share with better, cheaper products. They used Deming's and Juran's ideas to bring down the cost of good quality to as little as 5% of total production costs. In U.S. factories, the cost of quality then was 10 times as high: 50%. In software, it still is.Watts S. Humphrey spent 27 years at IBM heading up software production and then quality assurance. But his advice was seldom paid attention to. He retired from IBM in 1986. In 1987, he worked out a system for assessing and improving software quality. It has proved its value time and again. For example, in 1990 the cost of quality at Raytheon Electronics Systems was almost 60% of total software production costs. It fell to 15% in 1996 and has since further dropped to below 10%.Like Deming and Juran, Humphrey seems to be wining more praises overseas than at home. The India government and several companies have just founded the Watts Humphrey Software Quality Institute at the Software Technology Park in Chennai, India.Let's hope that U.S. lead in software will not be eaten up by its quality problems.26. What country has more highest-rating companies in the world than any other country has?A. Germany.B. The U.S.C. BrazilD. India27. Which of the following statements about Humphrey is true?A. He is now still an IBM employer.B. He has worked for IBM for 37 years.C. The US pays much attention to his quality advice.D. India honors him highly.28. By what means did Japan grab its large market share by the 1970s and the 1980s?A. Its products were cheaper in price and better in quality.B. Its advertising was most successful.C. The US hardware industry was lagging behind .D. Japan hired a lot of India software specialists.29. What does the founding of the Watts Humphrey Software Quality Institute symbolize?A. It symbolizes the US determination to move ahead with its softwareB. .It symbolizes the India ambition to take the lead in software.C. It symbolizes the Japanese efforts to solve the software quality problem.D. It symbolizes the Chinese policy on importing software.30. What is the writer worrying about?A. Many US software specialists are working for Japan.B. The quality problem has become a worldwide problem.C. The US will no longer be the first software player in the world.D. India and Japan are joining hands to compete with the US.第三部分:词汇和结构31.--- We ______ that you would fix the TV set this week.--- I’m sorry. An important way of reading a large, big-city newspaper is to put it into different sections. Can you find these separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, ads? Does your paper have other sections?News stories give facts, not the reporter's opinions. Some newspaper editorials (社论) come out with the writer's name, but many newspapers only carry editorials without putting the writers' names on.You can be a better reader if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, you can expect headlines to leave out unnecessary words. You can expect to find the most important facts in the leading paragraph (the first paragraph) of a news story. You can expect important news items to be on the front page. You can expect less important items to be on the inside pages. Most of all, the more you know about news of the present time, the more you will understand what is in the newspaper; important stories are generally presented one day and followed up on following days. So, an important way to read newspapers is reading one frequently.6.A good way to read a newspaper is to find separate sections and read according to your needs.A.TB.F答案:A7.To design ads might NOT be a newspaper reporter's work.A.TB.F答案:A8.From the text we know that newspaper headlines are what readers expect to read.A.TB.F答案:B9.If you are reading for major facts in the news stories, you should read the front page.A.TB.F答案:B10.The writer's suggestion to us is that we should read one newspaper frequently.A.TB.F答案:AMr. Tom Forester lived by himself a long way from town. Each choice in the bank isidentified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on AnswerSheet with a single line through the centre.Puns are even more subtle forms of word play. They use the technique of _ L____ sounding words or _ E meanings of the same word. Puns are thought by some _C _ to be the lowest form of humor, but I disagree with this. Puns require more subtle and G language skills than most humor forms, but even the very young can use them in their ____N____ forms. Some _ B _ humorists think too much of today’s humor is not very I or sophisticated. They dislike the suggestive or M language used too frequently, and they feel that most humorists are not very O . It is true that some of today’s humor is rather J , but I don’t think humor is to be blamed for.Section Three Translation from English into ChineseDirections: Translate the following passage into Chinese. The joy of laughing at a funny story is universal, probably as old as language itself. But, what is it that makes a story or a joke funnyAs one who has enjoyed humor since I first recognized it, I've made an attempt to explain and discuss humor with students in such diverse cultures as Latin America and China. I've done some serious thinking about funny stories. It has been a labor of love! Why is it that several students in a class will fall out of their chairs laughing after I tell a joke while the rest of the students look as if I've just read the weather report Obviously some people are more sensitive to humor than others. And, we recognize that some people tell jokes very wellwhile others struggle to say something funny.听了一个有趣的故事会发笑、很开心,古今中外都一样。

Don't look at the sky. Don't look for old,but some trees can show us an exact record of the weather even further back. It's clear that a tree would grow best in a climate with lots of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable (有利的) to an unfavorable climate can be reading the tree rings in tree trunk. To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then we are sure that lots of sunny and rainy weather happened. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of the weather, but also for the history of man. In a place of New Mexico you can find only sand-no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a lot of people lived there. They left suddenly. Why?A scientist studied the dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were used to make fires and buildings. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles st Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary (周年纪念) of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac's body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug, Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn't stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France's close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain's close links with the US.Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of "doubtful friendship", they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here's one: What's the best thing about Britain's relationship with France? The English Channel.71.(单选题) (1)、For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is______.A:friendly B:impolite C:brotherly D:a mixture of love and hate参考答案:D72.(单选题) (2)、The war in Iraq does ______ to the relationship between France and Britain.A:good B:harm C:neither good nor harm D:both good and harm参考答案:D73.(单选题) (3)、The British are not so friendly to ______ and the French are not so friendly to ______.A:Germany; America B:America; Germany C:Germany; Germany D:America; America参考答案:A74.(单选题) (4)、_____ are more interested in having holidays in _________.A:American people … Britain B:British people … GermanyC:French people … Britain D:British people … France参考答案:D75.(单选题) (5)、What does the last sentence mean? _______A:As long as the English Channel exists, no further disagreement will form between France and Britain.B:The English Channel can prevent anything unfriendly happening in both France and Britain.C:France and Britain are near neighbors, and this will help balance the relationship between themD:The English Channel is the largest enemy between France and Britain.参考答案:C(三)If you travel by air across the center of Africa or South America, you fly over forests for thousands of kilometers. These great forests are the oceans of trees. There are thousands and thousands of different kinds of plants and animals. However, the world's forests are getting smaller all the time. We are cutting down the trees because we need wood, and we need more farmland. Some people say that there will not be any forests like these in 20 or 30 years. What will happen if they disappear? If we cut down our forests, a lot of plants and animals will disappear from the world. In a lot of places the new farmland will soon look like the old deserts. Crops will not grow there. It will not rain very often, and the weather will get very hot. Perhaps the climate of the world will change. This will be dangerous for everyone in the world. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.81.(单选题) (1)、What is the main idea of this passage? ________A:It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B:The role of time in social life over the world.C:If people are late, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D:参考答案:B82.(单选题) (2)、What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? _______ A:A matter of work. They are studying the relationship between diet and health. At this time, over one hundred experiments are being done in this laboratory. In one of these experiments, the scientists are studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the same healthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eating two cups, and the third group of mice is eating three cups. After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice. But they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another, and using the equipment in their cages. At the time France was in a crisis. The government was badly run and people's lives were miserable. King Louis XIV tried to control the national parliament and raise more taxes. But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14, 1789, they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July 14 has been the French National Day. Louis tried to flee the country in 1792, to get support from Austria and Prussia. However, he was caught and put in prison. In September 1792, the monarchy was abolished. (2 points for each, altogether 30 points) Directions: There are three passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet. The place of the child in society has varied for thousands of years and has been affected bydifferent cultures and religions. In ancient times unwanted children were occasionally abandoned, put to death, exploited, or offered for religious sacrifices, and in any event a large percentage of them didn’t survive their physically hazardous existence to achieve maturity. In Western civilization within the last few hundred years, there have been many changes in attitude toward the young. In agricultural Europe , and later with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the children of the poor worked long hours for little or no pay, and there was no public concern for their safety or welfare. Punishment could be brutal and severe, and sometimes religious passions were expressed violently with a view toward saving the child's soul.By the eighteenth century the harsh, deterministic, doctrinaire methods began to show some change. Society slowly accorded children a role of more importance. Books were written expressly for them and gradually laws were passed for their protection. In the past few decades parents have become more attentive to the needs of their children. Better health care is available and education is no longer reserved for a limited few. With so many now able to go to college, many educators feel that we have too many students and too few competent scholars. Some say the pendulum in child rearing has swung so far toward permissiveness that many children are growing up alienated from society and with no respect for law or parental authority. The tendency today is for teachers and parents to emphasize individual responsibility and to stress that educational goals for students should be tailored to their chosen vocations rather than provide a generalized higher education.51. What does the article say about children?A. They have always been the hope of mankind.;B. In certain periods of history no one cared about them.;C. Writing Skills Help Job-seekingWhat do we mean by a satisfactory standard of living? Obviously, it must include the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing and shelter. To get these necessities on regular basis, a person must have a reliable income. But we have other needs which would probably also be included as basic, such as health and education facilities. We may think of all of these as our needs. Yet most of us would be far from satisfied if we had nothing more than these which are supplied for us. We all enjoy extra income to spend on things like books, sports or hobbies. Sometimes we save some of this extra income to pay for future expense of this type on holidays. So we must add our wants to our basic needs. Our standard of living is the degree, to which these needs and wants are satisfied. But as time goes on, what we think of as our basic needs changes. Twenty years ago a television would have been a luxury, and still is in many countries now. Even now we cannot say it is a need in the same sense as food, clothing and shelter. Yet if most of the people of a country have one, it comes to be accepted as a need. It is possible therefore to have food, clothing and shelter and still be poor by the standards of our own society.61. Unit 1 Leisure ActivitiesSection One Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are 2 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 1-5 are based on the following passage:―Humans should not try to avoid stress any more than they would shun food, love or exercise.‖ Said Dr. Hans Selye, the first physician to document the effects of stress on the body. While here‘s on question that continuous stress is harmful, several studies suggest that challenging situations in which you‘re able to rise to the o ccasion can be good for you.In a 2001 study of 158 hospital nurses, those who faced considerable work demands but coped with the challenge were more likely to say they were in good health than those who felt they stress that you can manage also boost immune function. In a study at the Academic Center for Dentistry in Amsterdam, researchers put volunteers through two stressful experiences. In the first, a timed task that required memorizing a list followed by a short test, subjects through a gory video on surgical procedures. Those who did well on the memory test had an increase in levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that‘s the body‘s first line of defense against germs. The video-watchers experienced a downturn in the antibody.Stress prompts the body to produce certain stress hormones. In short bursts these hormones have a positive effect, including improved memory function. ―They can help nerve cells handle information and put it into storage,‖ says Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University in New York. But in the long run these hormones can have a harmful effect on the body and brain.―Sustained stress is not good for you,‖ says Richard Morimoto, a researcher at Northwestern University in Illinois studying the effects of stress on longevity,‖It‘s the occasional burst of stress or brief exposure to stress that could be protective.‖1. The passage is mainly about ________.A) how to avoid stressful B) how to cope with stress effectivelyC) the benefits of manageable stress D) the effect of stress harmonies on memory2. The word ―shun‖ (Line, Para.1) most probably means ________.A) cut down on B) stay away fromC) put up with D) run out of3. We can conclude from the study of the 158 nurses in 2001 that ________.A) people who can‘t get t heir job done experience more stressB) doing challenging work may be good for one‘s healthC) stress will weaken the body‘s defense against germsD) people under stress tend to have a poor memory4. In the experiment described in Paragraph 3,the video-watchers experienced a downturn in the antibody because ________.A) the outcome was beyond their controlB) they knew little about surgical proceduresC) they felt no pressure while watching the videoD) the video was not enjoyable at all5. Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University believes that ________.A) a person‘s memory is determined by the level of hormones in his bodyB) a person‘s memory improves with continued experience of stress.C) stress hormones have lasting positive effects on the brainD) short bursts of stress hormones enhance memory functionPassage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Just five one-hundredths of an inch thick, light golden in color and with a perfect ―saddle curl,‖ the Lay‘s potato chip se ems an unlikely weapon for global domination. But its maker -- Frito-Lay -- t hinks otherwise.‖ Potato chips are a snack food for the world,‖ said Salman Amin, the company‘s head of global marketing. Amin believes there is no corner of the world that can resist the charms of a Frito-Lay potato chip.Frito-Lay is the biggest snack maker in America, owned by Pepsi Co. and accounts for over half of the parent company‘s $3 billion annual profits. But the U.S. snack food market is largely saturated, and to grow the company has to look overseas. Its strategy rests on two beliefs: first a global product offers economies of scale with which local brands cannot compete. And second, consumers in the 21st century are drawn to ―global‖ as a concept. ‖Global‖ does not mea n products that are consciously identified as American, but ones than consumes-especially young people-see as part of a modem, innovative world in which people are linked across cultures by shared beliefs and tastes. Potato chips are an American invention, but most Chinese, for instance, do not know than Frito-Lay is an American company. Instead, Riskey, the company‘s research and development head, would hope they associate the brand with the new world of global communications and business. With brand perception a crucial factor, Riskey ordered a redesign of the Frito-Lay logo (标识). The logo, along with the company‘s long-held marketing image of the ―irresistibility‖ of its chips, would help facilitate the company‘s global expansion. The executives acknowledge that they try to swing national eating habits to a food created in America, but they deny that amounts to economic imperialism. Later, they see Frito-Lay as spreading the benefits of free enterprise across the world. ―We‘re making products in those countries, we‘re adapting them to the tastes of those countries, building bus inesses and employing people and changing lives,‖ said Steve Reinemund, Pepsi Co.‘s chief executive.6. It is the belief of Frito-Lay‘s head of global marking that ________.A) p eople the world over enjoy eating their company‘s potato chipsB) the light g olden color enhances the charm of their company‘s potato chipsC) their company must find new ways to promote domestic sales.D) potato chips can hardly be used as a weapon to dominate the world market7. What do we learn about Frito-Lay from Paragraph 2?A) It gives half of its annual profits to its parent company.B) It needs to turn to the word market for development.C) Its products use to be popular among overseas consumers.D) Its expansion has caused fierce competition in the snack marker.8. One of the assumptions on which Frito-Lay bases its development strategy is that ________.A) products identified as American will have promising market valueB) products suiting Chinese consumers‘ needs bring more profitsC) local brands cannot compete successfully with American brandsD) consumers worldwide today are attracted by global brands9. Why did Riskey have the Frito-Lay logo redesigned?A) To suit changing tastes of young consumers.B) To compete with other American chip producers.C) To change t he company‘s long-held marketing image.D) To promote the company's strategy of globalization.10. Frito-Lay's executives claim that the promoting of American food in the international market ________.A) will be in the interest of the local peopleB) will lead to economic imperialismC) won‘t spoil the taste of their chipsD)won't affect the eating habits of the local peopleSection Two Blank-fillingDirections:In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Readthe passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank isidentified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on AnswerSheet with a single line through the centrePuns are even more subtle forms of word play. They use the technique of _ __ sounding words or _ meanings of the same word. Puns are thought by some _ _ to be the lowest form of humor, but I disagree with this. Puns require more subtle and language skills than most humor forms, but even the very young can use them in their ________ forms. Some _ _ humorists think too much of today‘s humor is not very or sophisticated. They dislike the suggestive or language used too frequently, and they feel that most humorists are not very . It is true that some of today‘s humor is rather10 , but I don‘t think humor is to be blamed for.Section Three Translation from English into ChineseDirections: Translate the following passage into Chinese. The joy of laughing at a funny story is universal, probably as old as language itself. But, what is it that makes a story or a joke funny? As one who has enjoyed humor since I first recognized it, I've made an attempt to explain and discuss humor with students in such diverse cultures as Latin America and China. I've done some serious thinking about funny stories. It has been a labor of love! Why is it that several students in a class will fall out of their chairs laughing after I tell a joke while the rest of the students look as if I've just read the weather report? Obviously some people are more sensitive to humor than others. And, we recognize that some people tell jokes very well while others struggle to say something funny.快乐的笑一个有趣的故事是普遍存在的,或许是古老的语言本身。
