It is the skills learned in college rather than the name of the degree that determine our career options. For one thing, a specific degree like a bachelor's degree in math not only provides us with knowledge of math, but also trains us to consider options thoroughly and solve problems effectively. We don't have to become a math teacher or look for jobs closely related to math. The various skills we acquire in learning math may lead us to careers like technician, risk assessor, andeven salesperson and administrator. For another, higher education shouldn't be regarded only as a means to an end. It is also an end in itself. We come to college to broaden our horizons and improve ourselves. which helps make us learned and cultured, thus enhancing our competitiveness in the employment market. The very skill I want to acquire to help with my future job hunting is how to be a good team player because effective cooperation and coordination are indispensible to the successful completion of a task or project. should learn how to work together and develop good relationship with team members so that I can improve myself in such a win-win relationship created by team spirit.6-3 iExplore 1: Building your languageWords and expressions 1-11.astonishing2. slipped3.pounded4. genuine5.resumed6. pursuit7.obtainWords and expressions 1-21) go through2)believe in3)leafed through4) if it hadn't been for5)had no idea6)put7)in touch with8)was lost in9)a variety ofCollocations 1-11.lean2.translated3.pursuit4.leaned5. need6.translate7.need8. pursuitCollocations 1-21. 新一代大学英语(基础篇)综合教程2 unit3答案3-2iExplore1:ReadingViewingABABAI think we can manage the fear of speaking in public. As long as we are clear about the reasons behind this fear, we can "manage" it. Some of us dare not speak in public because of lack of self-confidence or experience. In that case, we should first believe that we have something worth sharing and then seek and make use of public speaking opportunities, for example, speaking up in class or in small groups, to practice our skills. For others of us, the source of fear comes from external factors, such as the concern that the audience will not be interested in our topic. A simple way to get rid of the anxiety is to get to know as much as possible about our audience and then tailor our talk to engage the audience.Frankly speaking, I haven't had any positive experiences with public speaking up to now. In high school, I couldn't give a good publicspeech no matter how hard I had tried. But I still believe that with practice, I can learn to manage my nervousness and convey my message confidently and clearly in front of a crowd.I think I should take a couple of measures to cope with the difficulty of speaking in public. On the one hand, I should let go of the negative memories of the past experiences, learn from them and find the reasons for my fear. On the other hand, I should learn some public speaking skills, adopt what works for me and do much practice until I can give an effective presentation. With time and practice, I will feel more comfortable in front of my audience and become more confident in myself.3-3iExplore1:Building your languageWords and expressionsengagesustaincaptureddistractedfrequentcompetencereluctant demonstratesdumbs down think on your feet watered down add up tothinkthrough dedicatetostriking a balance in secretCollocationsinonininonfordevelop their abilities / develop the abilities Communicative competence / Conversational competence draw the attentionlose the abilityexchange ideas / share ideasdistracted her attentionVocabulary learning strategiespersonalremovaleducationalverbalproposalexperimentalapprovaladditionaladditionalapprovalpersonalproposaleducationalexperimentalLanguage focusNever have I seen or heard ofNo sooner had the teacher entered the classroomAt no time did I meanSeldom do students visit their professorsUnder no circumstances should you comment negatively will he be allowedBanked clozestruggledoverlookedinterpersonalreliancenegativecriticalimpactseriouslystrikeconfidentiExplore23-4iExplore2:ReadingViewingopen-ended / open endedwhenwhyclosesummarizeevery wordEngage withfacetimeshoutYes, I think they are really effective tips to help us enjoy smooth conversations. Actually, one point of these tips is concentration. We may all have experienced conversations where the other person is in fact absent-minded. While we are trying to push the conversation forward, they may just play with their cellphones and make no eye contact with us. In this case, the conversation can hardly move forward. No, I don't think the tips are effective enough. I think the most important factor for a better conversation is the attitude of the people involved in a conversation. For example, if the person we are talkingto sounds honest and gentle, the chances for an enjoyable conversation are really high. However, if the person looks bossy or rude, we will soon lose the motivation to talk on and will probably end the conversation as soon as possible3-5iExplore2:Building your languageWords and expressionsdullisolationupsetremarknoticeableverbalAABABACollocationstake in1A: Yes, I would like to ask my teacher for help if I cannot understand it.1B: I would never trust any message from unknown sources related to money.1C: It depends. It's often said that college life is one of the most meaningful and unforgettable experiences for a person. I totally agree, b ut I learned it the hard way. Today I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you my own experience in the first semester at college, a painful period of transition from a high school kid to an independent grown up.To most college freshmen, taking their first step in living on their own and star ting campus life can be exciting and joyful. I was no exception. But after the ex citement wore away at the end of the first week, too many unknowns in univer sity life made me uncomfortable, confused and frustrated, a feeling which last ed for more than half of the first semester. The unpleasant feeling came from my poor self-discipline, for which I paid a high price. Living far away from home and having much free time at hand, I often spent hours playing games or chatting with my friends on my cellphone far into the night. As a result, I felt sleepy and couldn' t concentrate in class the next day. Low grades of a few tests showed my decli ning academic performance, which affected my final scores of the courses. Onl y at that time did I realize that each test during the semester counted in my co llege GPA. My poor self-discipline was also reflected in money management. The suddenly increased fr eedom brought me financial problemsduring the first three months of my freshman year. Going to movies, buying ex pensive clothes, and eating out with friends usually cost more than half of my monthly allowance. The worst case was that I spent all of my monthly allowanc e within the first week of the semester, so I had to borrow money from my roo mmates. For that whole month, I ate only rice and vegetables and dared not s ocialize.Luckily, I realized my problem and managed to improve myself before it was to o late. There must be something to be gained and learned from my unpleasan t experience. One most important thing is that in college, I have to adjust to liv ing on my own, think independently, and take responsibility for my life and stu dies. If I do so, I'll lead a meaningful and fruitful college life.I am grateful to the hard experience for the lesson it has enabled me to learn . However hard the experience is, I am more self-disciplined and more confident in my future life. I hope my personal experienc e can be also helpful for you, in some way.iAssess1- 7 Unit testVocabulary and structure1.A2. C3. D4.C5.
