COURSE DESCRIPTION:
To explain why cities exist within regions, where they develop, how they grow, and how different activities are arranged among and within cities. Several interesting urban problems are covered, such as crime and poverty, housing, segregation, congestion, pollution, education, and public policy.

–Arthu r O’Sullivan, Urban Economics, 7th ed., McGraw-Hill Irwin
–Jan K. Bruckner, Lectures on Urban Economics, MIT Press
–Richard J. Arnott, A companion to Urban Economic, Blackwell Publishing
If you use any other version of the book (such as a neweror an olderedition),you are responsible to match the chapters that correspond to those in the 7th edition.
Reading Materials:Several news paper reports and journal articles will be distributed during the course, to encourage students apply basic microeconomic concepts to real world scenario. Related on-class discussions will be carried out together with lecture materials. You will be notified in advance which articles will be discussed.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS& GRADING POLICIES:
Grades for this course will be based on three tests (15%), six take-home problem sets (10%), participation and discussion (20%), as well as a final exam (70%). Note that class attendance is required and will be observed. Attending less than 2/3 of the lectures without medical justification and official documentation of
it automatically leads to not passing the course requirement.
