(Reports on Britain Under the Bombs)Night after night, in the hot summer and early fall of 1940, a deep, steady voice came over the Atlantic Ocean from England to America, telling of England's battle for survival under the waves of Germanbombers. This strong and steady voice, an American voice with a slightaccent of North Carolina, belonged to Edward R. Murrow, head of the European staff of the Columbia Broadcasting System."This is London," said Murrow, while the bombs fell and flames spreadon the streets of the city. His voice had a tone of sorrow for thesuffering of that ancient city, and a tone of confidence, too -- a feeling of belief that London would be there, no matter what it had to endure. Itcould not be destroyed. The heavy raids began in the middle of August, and Nazi bombsstarted to fall along England's Channel Coast. The German bombers castdark shadows over the white cliffs of Dover, and England's HomeGuard prepared to fight on the beaches, on the cliffs, and in the hills, until the last Englishman died or the invaders were driven off. Air Marshal Goering'sbomber pilots were sure of their ultimate triumph over England. Hitler and Goering believed that when London became a burned city like Warsaw and Rotterdam, England would surrender. But the English were more fortunate than the Poles in Warsaw and the Dutch in Rotterdam. They had the English Channel as a barrier againstthe Nazi ground forces, and they had the Royal Air Force(RAF) to battle the Nazis in the sky.The hardships of London really started in the first week of September, when Hitler was at last convinced that the English did not intend to give in. On September 7, 1940, nearly four hundred German bombershammered the city with bombs in broad daylight. Marshal Goeringboasted, "This is the historic hour when our air force for the first time delivered its bombs right into the enemy's heart."Fires burned, houses fell, gas pipes burst, and dark smoke rose from the streets. Men, women, and children felt the effect of the bombs.Radar sirens wailed, ambulances rushed from one place of agony toanother, and fire fighters faced the flames hour after hour.It seemed impossible for any city to take so much punishment andcontinue to endure. It seemed impossible for people of the city to do their daily jobs, to work and eat and sleep and carry on the business of life, with the crash of bombs all around them and planes spitting fire in the skiesabove. But the city endured. Trains brought commuters in from thesuburbs. Buses bumped along the streets. The fires were broughtunder control. Bottles of dairy milk arrived in door ways, and women took them in, as though the war were a thousand miles away. Newspapers appeared and people bought them, hurrying to work and readingreports of the battle raging over London. And Edward R. Murrow went on the air, saying in his deep, steadyvoice, "This is London." He spoke as though nothing could ever keep him from saying those words. He did not speak them with any attempt tosound heroic. He simply voiced the quiet truth of the city's existence.Murrow knew that Britain's fate depended upon the resolution ofthe people in the shops and streets, the men in the pubs, the housewives, those watching for fire on the roofs, the people who had a thousanddifficult and painful things to do.Much depended upon the handful of pilots who rose day after day andnight after night to meet the flocks of Nazi bombers. The pilots in theRAF reached the limits of exhaustion and then went beyond those limits, still fighting. But the people of London were also in the front lines, and they did nothave the satisfaction of being able to fight back. They couldn't reach upand smash the enemy planes. They had to dig quickly in cellars torescue their friends who had been buried underneath the wreckage. They had to put out endless fires. They had to stand firm and take whatever the enemy threw at them.In a broadcast on October 1, 1940, Murrow declared: "Mark it downthat these people are both brave and patient, that all are equal under the bomb, that this is a war of speed and organization, and thatwhichever political system best provides for the defense and decencyof the little man will win."Murrow's projection of eventual victory for the ordinary peopleproved to be accurate. The Nazi powers were finally defeated by theAllied nations.

”……I'm one of those people who's terrible at saying no. I take on too many projects at once, and spend too much of my time doing things I'd rather not be. I get stuff done, but it's not always the best I can do, or the best way I can spend my time. That's why my newest goal, both as a professional and a person, is to be a quitter.Being a quitter isn't being someone who gives up, who doesn't see important things through to the end. I aspire to be the opposite of those things, and think we all should. The quitter I want to be is someone who gets out when there's no value to be added, or when that value comes at the expense of something more important.I want to quit doing things that I'm asked to do, for no other reason than I'm asked to do it. I want to be able to quit something in mid-stream, because I realize there’s nothing good coming from it.A friend of mine once told me that "I knew I was an adult when I could stop reading a book, even after getting 500 pages into it." Odd though it sounds, we all tend to do this. We get involved in something, realize we don't want to be a part of it, but keep trucking through. We say "well, I've already invested somuch time in this, I might as well stick it out."I propose the opposite: quit as often as possible, regardless of project status or time invested. If you're reading a book, and don't like it, stop reading. Cut your losses, realize that the smartest thing to do is stop before your losses grow even more, and quit. If you're working on a project at work that isn't going anywhere, but you've already invested tons of time on it, quit. Take the time gained by quitting the pointless project, and put it toward something of value. Instead of reading an entire book you hate, read 1/2 a bad one and 1/2 a good one. Isn't that a better use of your time?If you're stuck doing something, and don't really want to do it anymore, step back for a second. Ask if you really have to do this, and what value is being produced from your doing it. Don't think about the time you've put into it, or how much it's taken over your life. If you don't want to do it, and don't have to do it, don't do it.By quitting these things, you'll free up time to do things that actually do create value, for yourself and for others. You'll have time to read all the great books out there, or at least a couple more. You’ll be able to begin to put your time and effort into the things you'd actually like to do.Let's try it together: what are the things you're doing, that you're only doing because you've been doing them for so long? Quit. Don't let time spent dictate time you will spend. Let's learn how to say "no" at the beginning, or in the middle, and free up more of our time to do the things we’d like to be doing, and the things actually worth doing.Saying no is hard, and admitting a mistaken yes is even harder. But if we do both, we'll start to make sure that we'respending our time creating value, rather than aggravating our losses. Let's be quitters together. What do you think? What in your life can you quit? Occasionally, life can be undeniably, impossibly difficult. nothing gold can stay译本赏析

This evening as I sat in the yard to enjoy the cool, it struck me how different the lotus pool I pass every day must look under a full moon. The moon was sailing higher and higher up the heavens, the sound of childish laughter had died away from the lane beyond our wall, and my wife was in the house patting Juner and humming a lullaby to him. I quietly slipped on a long gown, and walked out leaving the door on the latch.

A cinder - path winds along by the side of the pool. It is off the beaten track and few pass this way even by day, so at night it is still more quiet. Trees grow thick and bosky all around the pool, with willows and other trees I cannot name by the path. On nights when there is no moon the track is almost terrifyingly dark, but tonight it was quite clear, though the moonlight was pale.

美文赏析(六)Happiness(语篇、词汇、翻译)
美文赏析(六)HappinessEven lottery winners and the Forbes'100 wealthiest Americans have expressed only slightly greater happiness than the average American. Making it big brings temporary joy. But in the long run wealth is like health:its utter absence can breed misery, but having it doesn't guarantee happiness. Happiness seems less a matter of getting what we want than of wanting what we have.Has our happiness floated upward with the rising economic tide? Are we happier today than in 1940, when two out of five homes lacked a shower or tub? When heat often meant feeding wood or coal into a furnace? When 35 percent of homes had no toilet?Actually, we are not. Since 1957, the number of Americans who say they are "very happy"has declined from 35 to 32 percent. Meanwhile, the divorce rate has doubled, the teen suicide rate has nearly tripled, the violent crime rate has nearly quadrupled(even after the recent decline),and more people than ever (especially teens and young adults) are depressed.I call this soaring wealth and shrinking spirit"the American paradox."More than ever, we have big houses and broken homes, high incomes and low morale, secured rights and diminished civility. We excel at making a living but often fail at making a life. We celebrate our prosperity but yearn for purpose. We cherish our freedoms but long for connection. YouthYouth is not a time of life;it is a state of mind;it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lip s and supple knees;it is a matter of the will,a quality of the imagination,a vigor of th e emotions;it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of60more than a boy o f20.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our i deals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.Whether60or16,there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfail ing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your hea rt and my heart, there is a wireless station;so long as it receives messages of beauty,h ope, courage and power from man and from the infinite,so long as you are young. When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and th e ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at20;but as long as your aerials are up,to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at80.
Three Days to See(Excerpts)All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live.Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as24hours.But a lways we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours.I speak,of course,of free men who have a choice, not cond emned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstance s.What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last h ours as mortal beings, what regrets?Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we shoul d die tomorrow.Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life.We shou ld live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those,of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of“Eat,drink, and be merry”.But most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death. In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortun e,but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that thos e who live,or have lived,in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everythi ng they do.Most of us,however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die,but usu ally we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it.The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life. The same lethargy,I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses.O nly the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight.Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearin g in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldo m make the fullest use of these blessed faculties.Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same ol d story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it,of not being conscious of health until we are ill.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind an d deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life.Darkness would make hi m more appreciative of sight;silence would teach him the joys of sound.
