On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group, this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter. The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming. The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."11. The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements exceptthat_____.A. they should be easy to make friends withB. they must swim outdoors at least 8 times in the four cold monthsC. they must agree to swim outdoors from November through FebruaryD. they must reach the age of 6012. Doctors _____.A. encourage people to take part in cold-water swimming activelyB. point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimmingC. believe swimming is helpful both in winter and in summerD. have different ideas about the medical effects of cold-water swimming13. According to the passage, some doctors believe it is true that _____.A. you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns your skin color blueB. cold-water swimming causes more heart attacks in summer than in winterC. cold-water swimming can make the body temperature dangerously highD. Polar Bears are bears swimming in freezing water14. The Polar Bears like to swim all the year round, for _____.A. they can remain youngB. it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winterC. they find it enjoyable and interestingD. they might meet fewer troubles in life15. The passage is mainly about _____.A. a group of cold-water swimming loversB. the Polar Bears' life in New YorkC. doctors' ideas about cold-water swimmingD. the requirements of the Polar Bear ClubPassage 2Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country's economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the well-being (health and happiness) of local inhabitants.Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country's economy can suffer. On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose) jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities needed by tourists attractions. Forexample, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.16. Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the paragraph that goes before this passage?A) Support facilities are highly necessary.B) Building roads and hotels is essential.C) It is extremely important to develop tourism.D) Planning is of great importance to tourism.17. Too much tourism can cause all these problems EXCEPT ___________.A) pressure on trafficB) a change of tourists' customsC) overcrowdedness of places of interestD) a bad effect on other industries18. Not enough tourism can lead to ______________.A) an increase of unemploymentB) the higher cost of support facilitiesC) a decrease in tourist attractionsD) a rise in price and a fall in pay19. It is good for local people to know well that tourism will ______________.A) use up a large amount of waterB) help establish their customsC) weaken their economyD) help improve their life20. The word "handle" in the last paragraph most probably means ___________.A) deal with B) get in C) take down D) pick upPassage 3Many people with ordinary jobs may dream of long holidays in foreign countries, but they know they couldn't afford them even if they could get enough time off from the company. However, there are a few businesses which have started schemes to reward employees with long service by giving them a chance to fulfill such ambitions by providing both the time andthe money. One company gives every employee over 50 years old and who has been with them for 25 years, six months' holiday on full pay. At the same time additional money can be made available by way of loans, to help them with projects they cannot otherwise offer. Most of the people who have already benefited from the scheme, have used the opportunity to travel to distant places like the Far East or South America and some have spent the money on their favorite hobbies, such as photography. The cost of providing these special holidays is fairly high but the directors feel it is well worthwhile because the employees are greatly refreshed by their long break from the pressures and routines of their jobs. The only problems are that the people concerned tend to have key jobs which can be difficult to fill on a temporary basis for a relatively long time. Besides, some employees find it difficult to re-adjust to the old routine after such a long time away. In addition, one or two people may not feel secure at leaving their job in someone else's hands. On balance, however, there is no doubt that the idea is beneficial to industrial relations and a wonderful reward for long service.21. Many workers would like to ___________.A) dream of long holidays at homeB) spend a long time in unusual placesC) buy a holiday away from homeD) have a long holiday after many years22. One company____________.A) gives money to employees over 25 yearsB) lends staff money to go on holidaysC) allows long holidays to certain staffD) arranges long holidays for old employees23. Most of the employees in the scheme ____________.A) enjoy leisure activities B) develop their hobbiesC) take up photography D) take foreign trips24. The directors feel that _____________.A) the staff get a lot of pleasures from the schemeB) older staff are very enthusiastic about holidaysC) the scheme is more expensive than they expectedD) the scheme is beneficial to staff relations25. One of the problems is that ________________.A) it is difficult to fill a temporary jobB) some employees are afraid of their colleaguesC) it is difficult for some people to re-adjust to the old routine after a long breakD) employees don't feel secure when they are awayPassage 4If U.S. software companies don't pay more attention to quality, they could kiss their business good-bye. Both India and Brazil are developing a world-class software industry. Their weapon is quality and one of their jobs is to attract the top U.S. quality specialists whose voices are not listened to in their country.Already, of the world's 12 software houses that have earned the highest rating in the world, seven are in India. That's largely because they have used new methodologies rejected by American software specialists. For example, for decades, quality specialists, W. Edwards Deming and J. M. Juran had urged U.S. software companies to change their attitudes to quality. But their quality call mainly fell on deaf ears in the U.S. -but not in Japan. By the 1970s and 1980s, Japan was grabbing market share with better, cheaper products. They used Deming's and Juran's ideas to bring down the cost of good quality to as little as 5% of total production costs. In U.S. factories, the cost of quality then was 10 times as high: 50%. In software, it still is.Watts S. Humphrey spent 27 years at IBM heading up software production and then quality assurance. But his advice was seldom paid attention to. He retired from IBM in 1986. In 1987, he worked out a system for assessing and improving software quality. It has proved its value time and again. For example, in 1990 the cost of quality at Raytheon Electronics Systems was almost 60% of total software production costs. It fell to 15% in 1996 and has since further dropped to below 10%.Like Deming and Juran, Humphrey seems to be wining more praises overseas than at home. The India government and several companies have just founded the Watts Humphrey Software Quality Institute at the Software Technology Park in Chennai, India.Let's hope that U.S. lead in software will not be eaten up by its quality problems.26. What country has more highest-rating companies in the world than any other country has?A. Germany.B. The U.S.C. BrazilD. India27. Which of the following statements about Humphrey is true?A. He is now still an IBM employer.B. He has worked for IBM for 37 years.C. The US pays much attention to his quality advice.D. India honors him highly.28. By what means did Japan grab its large market share by the 1970s and the 1980s?A. Its products were cheaper in price and better in quality.B. Its advertising was most successful.C. The US hardware industry was lagging behind .D. Japan hired a lot of India software specialists.29. What does the founding of the Watts Humphrey Software Quality Institute symbolize?A. It symbolizes the US determination to move ahead with its softwareB. .It symbolizes the India ambition to take the lead in software.C. It symbolizes the Japanese efforts to solve the software quality problem.D. It symbolizes the Chinese policy on importing software.30. What is the writer worrying about?A. Many US software specialists are working for Japan.B. The quality problem has become a worldwide problem.C. The US will no longer be the first software player in the world.D. India and Japan are joining hands to compete with the US.第三部分:词汇和结构31.--- We ______ that you would fix the TV set this week.--- I’m sorry. He laughs because he thinks he can overcome some trouble. When a father throws his child into the air, the child probably won't laugh at the beginning. How does he know Daddy will catch him? Once the child realizes he will be caught, he is free to enjoy his flying. Then he will begin to laugh. When we grow old we may laugh on many occasions. But we usually laugh for the same reason. Scientists have puzzled over this question for many years. Now they are beginning to fill in the blanks. Not long ago, experiments showed that birds rely on the sun to guide them during day-light hours. But what about birds that fly mainly by night? Tests with artificial (人造的) stars have proved conclusively that certain night-flying birds are able to follow stars in their long-distance flights. One such bird--a warbler--had spent its lifetime in a cage and had never flown under a natural sky. Yet it showed an inborn ability to use stars for guidance. The bird's cage was placed under an artificial star-filled sky at migration time. The bird tried to fly in the same direction as that taken by his outdoor cousins. Any change in the position of the artificial stars caused a change in the direction of his flight.Scientists think that warblers, when flying in daylight, use the sun for guidance. But stars are apparently their main means of directed flight in the night. What do they do when stars are hidden by clouds? Apparently, they find their way by such landmarks as mountain ranges, coast lines and river courses. But when it is too dark to see these, the warblers circlehelplessly, unable to find their way.Which of the following is NOT true about migratory birds' flight?A.Some birds fly mainly by night.B.Some birds fly mainly by day.C.Birds depend on the sun or stars to guide them.D.Birds like to fly during daylight hours.2、What do we know about the experimental warbler?A.It had never flown freely outdoors.B.It was set free for the experiment.C.It had never been placed under the sun.D.It had lost its way in its daylight flight.3、What do we know about warblers as a whole?A.They do not have intelligence.B.They do not need to learn to fly in the right way.C.They tend to take the same route as other birds.D.They cannot sense changes in the position of the moon.4、What does the passage say about warblers' sense of direction?A.They are not able to see clearly at night.B.They get lost under star-filled sky.C.They lose their way when it is too dark.D.They usually depend on clouds for direction.5、What does "fill in the blanks" in the first paragraph mean?A.To do the exercise.B.To take the test.C.To know the right words.D.To know the answer.6、Passage TwoHow men first learned to invent words is unknown. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations--the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the happy and sad events of our past;the more we read and learn, the larger the number of words that mean something to us becomes.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and feelings. This attractive use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music, and, by their position and association, can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make our speech dull and silly.Which of the following did men invent first?A.Words.B.Sounds.C.Signs.D.Letters.7、Why did men invent language?A.To make nice sounds for others to hear.B.To be different from animals.C.To have something to write down with.D.To make their ideas known to others.8、Which of the following is true of words according to the passage?A.Their power is beyond imagination.B.They enable people to live longer and read more.C.They remind people of their past experience.D.They last longer than signs or sounds.9、Why does the author mention "poet" in the last paragraph?A.A poet is an example of good language users.B.A poet is full of great thoughts and feelings.C.A poet tells of the glad and sad events of his past.D.A poet knows more sounds and words than others.10、What is the best title of the passage?A.How Language Came into Beingnguage and Human ExperienceC.Poet: a Master of Wordsnguage and Its Use11、Passage ThreeIn the 1800's, trains roared into stations. They were symbols of progress and expansion. They played as much of a role inAmerica's history as presidents and generals. The first American railroads were built in the late 1820's. The early railroads provided cheap transportation for shippers and travelers. To encourage the railroads to expand into unsettled lands, President Millard Fillmore signed a series of landgrant acts (土地拨赠法案) in the 1850's. These acts gave the railroad companies ownership of land that ran along the railways. In return for the land, the railroads carried government traffic at reduced rates. The railroad companies sold much of their land to farmers and cattlemen, who then shipped their goods on the trains. The importance of the railroads became clear during the Civil War. During the war, trains carried troops, arms, and supplies. One reason that the North won the war is that it had more use of the railroads.Between 1865 and 1900, railroads grew rapidly. The first transcontinental (跨越全洲的) route was Completed in 1869. This track made it easier for pioneers to cross the Rocky Mountains and settle the West. And the railroads brought new people to the West even before the trains started running. Thousands of Chinese and Irish laborers helped to lay down the tracks. When were the first American railroads built according to the passage?A.Around 1800.B.Around 1830.C.Around 1860.D.Around 1890.12、Which of the following is NOT a result of the landgrant acts of the 1850's?A.Farmers and settlers received land for free.B.The railroads expanded into unsettled lands.C.The government could pay less for its railroad use.D.Farmers and cattlemen bought land from the railroads.13、What was one of the reasons that the South was defeated in the Civil War?A.Only the North owned railroads and trains.B.The North used railroads to attack the Southern army.C.The South failed to make good use of railroads.D.The South was short of military supplies.14、Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.The first railroad that reached the West was completed in 1860's.B.Trains helped pioneers settle the West.C.Railroad construction created a lot of jobs.D.Trains carried Chinese and Irish laborers to the West.15、Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?A.Trains helped pioneers to cross the Rocky Mountains.B.Railroads played an important role in American history.C.Trains controlled American economy in the 19th century.D.Railroads grew rapidly between 1865 and 1900.

At the time France was in a crisis. The government was badly run and people's lives were miserable. King Louis XIV tried to control the national parliament and raise more taxes. But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14, 1789, they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July 14 has been the French National Day. Louis tried to flee the country in 1792, to get support from Austria and Prussia. However, he was caught and put in prison. In September 1792, the monarchy was abolished. In the same year, Louis was executed. A few months later his wife, Marie, also had her head cut off. The Revolution of France had frightened the other kings of Europe. 大学英语三级B级(阅读)练习试卷6(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.People who work night shifts are constantly fighting against an “internal clock”in their bodies. Quite often the clock tells them to sleep when their job requires them to remain fully awake. It’s no wonder that more accidents happen during night shifts than at any other time. Light therapy(光照治疗法)with a bright light box can help night-shift workers adjust their internal clock. However, many doctors recommend careful planning to help improve sleep patterns For example, night-shift workers often find it difficult to sleep in the morning when they get off work because the body’s natural rhythm(节律)fights back, no matter how tired they are. Some experts recommend that night-shift workers schedule two smaller sleep periods-one in the morning after work, and another longer one in the afternoon, closer to when the body would naturally need to sleep. It’s also helpful to ask friends and family to cooperate by avoiding visits and phone calls during the time when you are sleeping.6.Night-shift workers are those who ______.A.have to pay on their internal clockB.need to re-adjust their clockC.fall asleep late at nightD.have to work at night正确答案:D解析:根据短文前两句可知,“night-shift workers“就是那些值夜班的工人。

By t he Treaty of Paris of 1763, which ended the war with the French and the Indians, England gained possession of Canada and all the territory east of the Mississippi River. French influence on this continent thus came to an end; England now controlled most of North America. But the war had been long and expensive. England had many debts. George III, king of England, after consulting with his advisers, decided that the American colonists(殖民者)should help pay some of the expenses of this war. A standing English army of 10,000 men had been left in the colonies(殖民地)for protection against the Indians. The English government also felt that the colonists should share in the expenses of maintaining this army. The result was a series of measures, the Grenville Program, passed by Parliament and designed to raise money in the colonies. Some of these measures were accepted by the colonists, but one in particular, the Stamp Act, was met with great protest. The Stamp Act required that stamps, ranging in price from a few cents to almost a dollar, be placed on all newspapers, advertisements, bills of sale, wills, legal papers, etc. The Stamp Act was one of the causes of the American Revolution. It affected everyone, rich and poor alike.
