He had come up the hard way (极其艰巨地), and embodied nothing in particular except the eternal (永远的) toughness (坚韧) and sinewy (强壮的) fiber of the men who grew up beyond the mountains. He was one of a body of men who owed reverence (崇敬) and obeisance (顺从) to no one, who were self-reliant to a fault (过分地), who cared hardly anything for the past but who had a sharp eye for the future. 8. These frontier(边疆) men were the precise opposites of the tidewater aristocrats. Back of them in the great surge (涌 动) that had taken people over the Alleghenies and into the opening Western country, there was a deep, implicit (不言 明的) dissatisfaction with a past that had settled into grooves (陈规). They stood for democracy, not from any reasoned conclusion about the proper ordering of human society, but simply because they had grown up in the middle of democracy and kne, the Southern states had fought a desperate war to uphold the ideals for which Lee stood. In the end, it almost seemed as if the Confederacy fought for Lee; as if he himself was the Confederacy……the best thing that the way of life for which the Confederacy stood could ever have to offer. He had passed into legend before Appomattox. Thousands of tired, underfed (使吃不饱) , poorly clothed Confederate soldiers, long since past the simple enthusiasm of the early days of the struggle, somehow considered Lee the symbol of everything for which they had been willing to die. But they could not quite put this feeling into words. If the Lost Cause, sanctified (使…神圣化) by so much heroism (英雄气概) and so many deaths, had a living justification, its justification was General Lee. 7. Grant, the son of a tanner (制革工人) on the Western frontier, was everything Lee was not.

They learn languages, history, political methods, geography, physics, (87) chemistry, and mathematics. Others go to school to learn skills in order to make a (88)living . Traditional education is very useful and important. Yet, no one can learn (89) everything from school.A teacher, no matter how much he knows, cannot teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher's main job is toshow his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned (90) outside school by the students themselves. It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to remember some facts or some skills. It is quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in (91) working out a math problem. Great scientists before us didn't get everything from school. Edison didn't even finish (92) junior school. And yet, he made so many new things. These scientists were so successful, but their teachers only showed them (93)the way. The reason for their success was that they knew how to study. They read books that were not (94) taught at school. They would ask many questions as they read. They did thousands of (95)experiments . They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a (96)single moment. Most important was that they knew how to use their brains.Questions 97 to 106 are based on the same passage or dialog. There are some steps you can take yourself to avoid (97)catching a cold. It has been (98) proved that colds are not caused by being subjected to very bad weather. Colds are caused by a (99) virus hidden in the body, and so you are less in danger waiting for a bus on a snowy day than you are sitting in a warm room, gathered with friends, fellow workers, or students, who just may be passing the virus around. If you feel a cold feeling when you are getting a cold, you're already sick. A cold feeling is an early sign: it's the cold that caused the cold feeling, not the other way around. The virus can be (100) spread through tiny drops driven into the air. When a cold-sufferer (101)coughs or sneezes (打喷嚏), surprisingly, this is not the most common way of spreading. Many studies have now shown that most colds are "caught" by hand (102)contact. A cold-sufferer rubs her nose, and by doing so, passes the virus to her hand. Then a friend comes to visit, "Don't kiss me," she warns, so the friend steps back and(103)shakes her hand. The friend then wipes her own nose or eye —and several days later catches a cold. Or parents (104)pick up waste paper thrown away by their children, but fail to wash their hands after doing this.Cold viruses also can be spread to objects—telephones, handbags, and plates—and can (105)remain able to infect for three hours. If the cold-sufferer and other members of the family often wash their hands, the spread of viruses can be (106) reduced.Part 8 Reading Comprehension (Banked Cloze)(Each item: 1)Questions 258 to 267 are based on the following passage. Confused combating acquainting estimated diagnosed promote pressure assume access account solution obvious plaguea vailable virusNew medicines have helped many live with AIDS, but they have also had some negative effects on the fight against the disease. In recent years people who have been 258diagnose. with AIDS have been living longer, healthier lives. This is because those that have been infected with the disease have 259accsee. to new medicines. These medicines should not however, be 260confused.with a complete cure for AIDS. AIDS continues to 261account. for huge losses in life. This includes people who use the new medicines. The only sure way to protect yourself from AIDS is to avoid risk connected with the 262virus. that causes the illness. One of the biggest concerns in recent years has been the public's attitude toward the disease. Having new medicines has lead many to 263assume. that AIDS no longer threatens a person's life. This has lead to careless behavior in places where these medicines are 264available. It is 265estimated. that the number of people who got AIDS in developed countries in 2004 was up 10 percent from 2003. Those in rich countries should remember 266combating. the AIDSepidemic is something the people on this earth must do together. We must act with care and show the world that educated communities can fight this 267plague. If richer nations cannot stop the spread of AIDS, there will be no hope for the poorer nations. Questions 268 to 277 are based on the following passage.Rates lack status connected participate illustrated literacy emerged literature implemented crisis diagnose sign constitute focusWe need to protect the ones we love from AIDS. This means avoiding behavior 268connected. with the virus that causes the disease. The greatest health risk facing young people today is their 269lack. of information about how people get AIDS. Many organizations have 270emerged. over the past twenty-five years to fight this illness. Their goal is to combat the spread of AIDS by getting the information to the public.Teenagers have shown higher 271rates. of becoming infected than other age groups. Many campaigns that have been 272implemented. to protect young people have failed. Organizations have needed to find new ways to educate this age group about the disease. "We can't assume that what works for adults will also work for teenagers," said one health worker. Her organization is trying to get information to young people by having them 273participate. in discussions with peers. There is also a strong 274focus. on informing women with AIDS who want to have a baby. There has been a lot of 275literature. put out to reach this group. "There is a real 276crisis.going on in our country," said one nurse. "Women in poorer areas 277constitute. a far greater number of those being diagnosed with AIDS than women in better neighborhoods." She hopes a publication that she is putting together will help with this.Part 17 Reading Comprehension (Multiple Choice)The AIDS virus is carried in a person's body fluids (体液). The virus can be passed during sex with an infected partner or by sharing instruments used to take intravenous (静脉注射的) drugs. It can also be passed in blood or fluids made from blood or from a pregnant (怀孕的) woman with AIDS to her developing baby. Many stories about the spread of AIDS are false. You cannot get AIDS from working or attending school with someone who has the disease. You cannot get it from drinking glasses or other objects used by such persons. Officials say no one has caught AIDS by living with, caring for, or touching an AIDS patient. There are several warning signs of being infected with AIDS. They include always feeling tired, unexplained (无法解释的) weight loss, and uncontrolled expulsion (排泄) of body wastes. Other warning signs are the appearance of white areas on the mouth, dark red areas of skin that do not go away, and a higher than normal body temperature. However, just because you have one or more of these conditions does not mean you have AIDS. Always go to a doctor or health center for a complete examination. The doctor may give you an AIDS blood test. When a virus enters the body, the body's defenses against disease produce antibodies (抗体) to fight the virus. The test shows if the body has produced antibodies to the AIDS virus. Results of the test are known after a few hours. The test tells only if your body has produced AIDS antibodies. It cannot tell if you have AIDS or if you will ever get the disease. In December (1988), the United States government approved (批准) a simpler and faster AIDS blood test. The newer test can confirm (证实) the presence (出现) of the AIDS antibodies in about five minutes.B382.The AIDS virus can spread ___________.A. only from a man to womanB. among those who share drug instrumentsC. by shaking hands with someone who has the virusD. by touching an AIDS patientD383.It is wrongly thought that ___________.A. the AIDS virus can be passed during sexB. the AIDS virus can spread from an expecting mother to her babyC. the AIDS virus can be passed by touching infected bloodD. one can get AIDS by working or attending school with someone who hasthe diseaseD384.The warning signs of being infected with AIDS do not include____________.A. weight lossB. uncontrolled expulsion of body wastesC. the appearance of red areas of skinD. a body temperature lower than a normal oneD385.If a person is worried that he might have AIDS, he should go to_____________.A. a government officeB. a defense systemC. an antibody production centerD. a doctor or health centerC386._________ can show if one has AIDS.A. Whether one has a defense method against AIDSB. Whether one has unexplained weight lossC. Whether the AIDS antibodies are produced in the bodyD. The doctor's complete examinationQuestions 387 to 391 are based on the same passage or dialog. In the United States, about 750,000 persons have suffered from AIDS. More than one half of them have died. But doctors say evidence (证据) also shows there is no reason for persons to become terrified (惊吓) by the disease. The AIDS virus is spread during sex with an infected partner, or by infected blood. But doctors say their studies show the disease is not spread through normal, close social activities.A study by one research team was printed in the New England Journal (杂志) of Medicine. The doctors studied 101 family members who lived with AIDS and lived in crowded conditions. The family members shared many personal goods with the patients. These included toothbrushes, drinking glasses, beds, towels, and toilets.Doctors said only one family member—a five-year-old girl—got the AIDS virus. They note, however, that the girl's mother had the disease. They believe the girl probably was born with the virus. No other family member in the study got the AIDS virus or showed any signs of the disease. The head of the study, Gerald Friedland, said if the disease is not easily spread in crowded homes, it also will not spread easily in factories, offices, schools, and other public places. Doctor Friedland said the study also shows there i s no reason to punish AIDS patients and to force them to live separately from other persons.American health officials recently warned, however, that some health care workers should take special care. The report noted the AIDS virus is carried in blood and other body fluids. It said health care workers should put protective (保护性的) covers over their eyes and skin during medical operations, dental (牙科的) work, or other times when the patient may bleed. In the United States, most AIDS patients are homosexual (同性恋的) men, people taking drugs who used infected needles (针头), and people who received infected blood. More recent studies show the AIDSvirus also can be spread during heterosexual (异性的) relations. It can spread either from the man to the woman or from the woman to the man.C387.Doctors say there is no reason for people to be frightened about AIDSbecause _________.A. it is not deadlyB. few people are infected with AIDSC. the AIDS virus is not spread in everyday social activities.D. the AIDS virus is not spread during sexA388.The study of 101 family members who lived with AIDS patients showsthat ________.A. AIDS is not spread by using the same personal itemsB. women are more likely to get the AIDS virus than menC. married men are less likely to get AIDS than unmarried onesD. the AIDS virus is passed by drinking glassesB389.According to Doctor Friedland, there is no reason to _______.A. stop meeting AIDS patientsB. stop living with AIDS patientsC. fear that AIDS can be passed from a mother to a babyD. fear that the AIDS virus can be passed during sexC390.Health workers were warned to take special care when the patientbleeds because _______.A. AIDS can be passed by touching the patient's bodyB. AIDS can be spread by touching the patient's skinC. the AIDS virus can be carried in blood or other bodyfluidsD. the health care workers may be infected by the bloodD391._______ are least likely to be infected with the AIDS disease.A. People who use drugsB. Persons who offer infected blood to othersC. Men who are gayD. Married menQuestions 392 to 396 are based on the same passage or dialog.Everyone knows what happens when you catch a cold. First you get a sore (疼痛的) throat. Then you sneeze (打噴嚏). After coughing and blowing your way through the next few days, it's over... until the next time.Every year 69% of Canadians will suffer at least one cold. Colds are responsible for a great deal of lost time at work and at school. There is no known cure for the common cold. Once you catch a cold, your body usually makes antibodies (抗体) against the virus. These antibodies help the body develop a resistance (抵抗力) to the virus if you catch it again. Unfortunately, the common cold is caused by over 200 different viruses. The large number of viruses and the fact that they change help explain why there is no cure for the common cold. Adults, who have been exposed (遭受) to more viruses, tend to suffer fewer colds than children. The occurrence of colds tends to increase in the winter but NOT because of the cold! Cold weather has not been shown to increase the number of colds.People spend more time indoors in winter. They are therefore more likely to come into physical contact with each other and spread the mon colds are spread by sneezes or by direct contact with a cold sufferer. Sneezing spreads colds when someone sneezes near other people, or sneezes on objects which others later touch. Once the virus is on someone's hand, and theunsuspecting (毫无戒心的) victim touches his or her nose or eyes, the virus is spread and trouble begins. The simplest and most effective way to lower the risk of catching a cold is to wash your hands frequently.A392.At the very beginning of the passage, the writer talks about ________.A. what a cold is likeB. what a cold virus is likeC. how to cure a coldD. how to prevent a cold from spreadingB393.There is no cure for the common cold because ________.A. the nature of colds remains unknownB. the large number of cold viruses keeps changingC. your body can't develop antibodiesD. your resistance isn't strong enoughC394.Which of the following products would have increased sales if morepeople became aware of the real reason for the spread of colds?A. She had been the director of a school and a camp before she retired, but she needed to keep busy. She was even willing to work without pay. That was the reason why she found a volunteer job with an agency. The agency that she chose to workfor was a business that helped other businesses find jobs for old people. Every day she talked with other retired people like herself. By talking, she recognized two things. Old people had abilities that were not being used. Old people also had problems –mostly problems with communication.Mrs. Douglas found a new purpose for herself. Through the years, from time to time, she had written stories about people for national magazines. Now there was a new subject: old people like herself. She began to write a newspaper column called “Sixty Plus”, which focuses on getting old. She writes about the problems of old people, especially their problems with being misunderstood.Anna Douglas uses her thinking ability to see the truth behind a problem. She understands the reasons why problems begin. She understands old people and young people, too. For example, one of her readers said that his grandchildren left the house as soon as he came to visit. Mrs.Douglas suggested some ways for him to understand his grandchildren. She told him to listen to young people’s music and to watch the most popular television shows.“It’s important to know something about your grandchildren’s world,” says Mrs. Douglas. “That means questioning and listening, and listening is not what o ld people do best.” She continues, “Say good things to them and about them. Never criticize your grandchildren or any other youngsters. Never tell them that they are wrong. Don’t give them your opinion. They have been taught that they should have respect for old people. The old should have respect for the young as well.”1.Anna Douglas began writing her newspaper column ______.A.When she worked as the director of aschoolB.after she became a businesswomanC.after she retiredD.before she found a volunteer job2.Anna Douglas understands the problems of old people ______.A.because she likes their musicB.because she has grandchildrenC.because she watches their televisionprogramsD.because she is old herself3.Anna Douglas’ newspaper column ______.A.is about how to find jobs for old peopleB.has ideas for youngstersC.discusses the problems of old peopleD.contains mostly funny stories4.What advice did Mrs. Douglas give to the reader whose grandchildren didn’t want to see him?A.Go to the concert more often with them.B.Give them some advice from time to time.C.Try to understand the young.D.Watch more popular TV shows.5.The main point of Mrs. Douglas’ advice (last paragraph) is that ______.A.old people should understand and respectthe youngB.old people have a lot to learn from theyoungC.poor hearing often causes old people tomisunderstand the youngD.the young should show respect for the old key: (1-5) C, D, C, C, A(2)The nervous-looking young man hesitated for a few moments outside the jeweler’s before having the courage to enter. He was warmly greeted by a young assistant who offered to help him. James felt a rush of blood to his face as he explained he would be bringing in his fiancee (未婚妻) to choose an engagement ring (订婚戒指) later that day. The assistant listenedcarefully and told him that the best way to go would be to make up a couple of trays (托盘) of rings, which would suit both the young man’s pocket and the young lady’s taste. James calmed down little by little. He wasn’t used to buying jewelry and was a little worried about overspending. Getting married was an expensive business but hopefully it would be a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. After some discussion as to suitable price-range and the variety of styles and materials which his fiancee might like, the shop assistant showed him a couple of dozen rings and offered to set them aside. James agreed on her choice and, much satisfied, left the shop promising to return at five o’clock. When half and hour later than planned, he finally did return to the shop, together with his fiancee, Laura, the assistant acted as if she had never seen him before. On being asked to show them some engagement rings she first brought out a rather inexpensive selection, giving the couple the opportunity torefuse them before showing them the two trays she had prepared. A choice was soon made and the couple went away satisfied. Water is the key component in all of our daily lives no matter where we live, not only for human use, but for energy, industry, agriculture, and livestock. Now if you look at the earth, you’ll notice that over 75% of our blue planet is water. The problem is only 3% of that water is fresh water.Reading & InteractingI. Understanding the Text1. Text Organization1.1Paras. 1-2: We need to conserve water aggressively so that scientists can have time to find solutions.Paras. 3-7: Water is going to be the most important and most contentious resource of the 21st century.Paras. 8-9: There are solutions, but they take time.Para. 10: Aggressive conservation is needed to buy us time before scientists find solutions.1.21>Water is on the way to becoming the most important resource of the 21st century. Getting water right is the great challenge the world is confronted with. To meet the challenge conservation should come first; then follow it up with new solutions.2>To introduce the water problem, the author tells us about what happened one night when he and his seven-year-old daughter were brushing teeth together. In so doing the author tries to introduce the reader to a serious topic in a casual manner. Besides, it also reminds us of the fact that everyone can play a role, even in our daily life, in saving water.3>He cites the late Nobel Laureate Richard Smalley’s list of humanity’s top 10 problems for the next 50 years.4>He wants to show the reader how difficult it is for us to find a solution to the water problem.5>He repeats what he says at the beginning of the article: The water problem can be solved but "The scientists need time."2. People need water intheir daily life. Energy production requires water for cooling power plants. Industry needs water for all sorts of purposes. Agriculture needs water for irrigation.5>Yes, he did. We shall be looking at how those with physical disabilities rise to the challenge they present, setting an example to us all in terms of courage and endurance. In doing so,they deserve not only our help and encouragement, but also our gratitude.

Key to Exercises (Unit 5)Section AComprehension of the TextII Answer the following questions.1.
