2014考研英语一真题试题及答案(翻译)Directions:Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written on the ANSWER SHEET(10 points)Music means different things to different people and sometimes even different things to the same person at different moments of his life. It might be poetic, philosophical, sensual, or mathematical, but in any case it must, in my view, have something to do with the soul of the human being. Hence it is metaphysical; but the means of expression is purely and exclusively physical: sound. I believe it is precisely this permanent coexistence of metaphysical message through physical means that is the strength of music.46) It is also the reason why when we try to describe music with words, all we can do is articulate our reactions to it, and not grasp music itself.Beethoven’s importance in music has been principally defined by the revolutionary nature of his compositions. He freed music from hitherto prevailing conventions of harmony and structure. Sometimes I feel in his late works a will to break all signs of continuity. The music is abrupt and seemingly disconnected, as in the last piano sonata. In musical expression, he did not feel restrained by the weight of convention. 47) By all accounts he was a freethinking person, and a courageous one, and I find courage an essential quality for the understanding, let alone the performance, of his works. This courageous attitude in fact becomes a requirement for the performers of Beethoven’s music. His compositions demand the performer to show courage, for example in the use of dynamics. 48) Beethoven’s habit of increasing the volume with an extreme intensity and then abruptly following it with a sudden soft passage was only rarely used by composers before him.Beethoven was a deeply political man in the broadest sense of the word. He was not interested in daily politics, but concerned with questions of moral behavior and the larger questions of right and wrong affecting the entire society.49) Especially significant was his view of freedom, which, for him, was associated with the rights and responsibilities of the individual: he advocated freedom of thought and of personal expression.Beethoven’s music tends to move from chaos to order as if order were an imperative of human existence. For him, order does not result from forgetting or ignoring thedisorders that plague our existence; order is a necessary development, an improvement that may lead to the Greek ideal of spiritual elevation. It is not by chance that the Funeral March is not the last movement of the Eroica Symphony, but the second, so that suffering does not have the last word. 50) One could interpret much of the work of Beethoven by saying that suffering is inevitable, but the courage to fight it renders life worth living.46. It is also the reason why when we try to describe music with words, all we can do is articulate our reactions to it, and not grasp music itself.【句型分析】本句主句主干为it is the reason, why引导定语从句,修饰the reason。

I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work nay way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station—and got turned down every time.In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring as inexperienced person, "Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give youa chance." she said.I thumbed home to Dixon, 111. While there were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father saidMontgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since.Dixon was where I had played high-school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But 1 wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mum reminded me. Dad offered me the car to drive 70 miles to the Tri-Cities. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer. As I left his office, ray frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sports announce if he can't get a job in a radio station?"I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What wasthat you said about sports?Do you know anything about football?" Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute buildup to that play, and Peter told meI would be broadcasting Saturday's game!On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's wordS: "If you carry on, one day something good will happen -something that wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I'd gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.35.When he graduated from college in 1932____.A. he was in ChicagoB.he got a job in ChicagoC.a kind lady told him that she could give him a jobD.he couldn't find ajob in radio station in Chicago36.In Dixon, Illinois, his hometown, ____.A.there was no radio station at that timeB.his father opened a storeC.he was not hired as the manager of a sports departmentD.he became the manager of a sports department37.When he was turned down by the store, ____.A.he was disappointed by no meansB.his mother offered him a carC.his mother gave him some adviceD.he drove out for sightseeing38.Which of the following statements is not true?A.He was turned down at first by WOC Radio.B.He was not hired by WOC Radio at first.C.He was hired after he broadcasted a 65-yard run game.D.He was tested by broadcasting an imaginary game.39.What is the m ain idea of this article?Passage IIIt looked just like another aircraft from the outside. The pilot told his young passengers that it was built in 1964. But appearances were deceptive and the 13 students from Europe and the USA, who boarded the airoratt were in for the flight of their lives.Inside the area that normally had seats had become a long white tunnel. Heavily padded from floor to ceiling, it looked a bit strange. There were almost no windows, but lights along the padded walls illuminated 'it. Most of the seats had been taken out apart from a few at the back where the ymmg scientists quickly took their places with a lookof fear. For 12 months, science students from across the continents had competed to win a place on the flight at the invitation of the European Space Agency. The challenge had been to suggest imaginative experiments to be conducted in weightless conditions. For the next two hours, the flight resembled that of an enormous bird which bad lost its reason, shooting upwards towards the heavens before rushing towards Earth. The invention was to achieve weightlessness for a few seconds. The aircraft took off smoothly enough. But any feelings that 1 and the young scientists had that we were on anything like a scheduled passenger service were quickly dismissed when the pilot put the plane into a 45 degree climb which lasted around 20 seconds, Then the engines cat out and we became weightless, Everything became confused and left or right, up or down no longer had any meaning. After ten seconds of free fall descent, the pilot pulled the aircraft out of its nosedive, The return of gravity was less immediate than its loss, but was still sudden enough to ensure that some students came down with a bump. Each time the pilot cut the engines and we became weightless. A new team conducted its experiment. First it was the Dutch who wanted to discover how it is that cats always land on their feet. Then the German team who conducted a successful experiment on a traditional building method to see if could beused for building a future space station. The Americans had an idea to create solar sails that could be used by satellites. After two hours of going up and down in the lane doing their experbnents, the predominant feeling was one of excitement rather than sickness. Most of the students thought it was an unforgettable experience and one they would be keen to repeat.40.What did t i l e author say about the plane?A.It had no seats.B.It was painted white.C.It had no windows.D.The outside was misleading.41.According to the author, how did the young scientists feel before the flighty?A.Sick.B.KeenC.Nervous,D.Impatient.42.What did the pilot do with the plane after it took off?.A.He quickly climbed and then stopped the engines.B.He climbed, and then made the plane fall slowly.C.He took off normally and then cut the engines for 20 seconds.D.He climbed and then made the plane turn over.43.According to the passage, the purpose of being weightless was to____.A.see what conditions are like in spaceB.prepare the young scientists for future work in spaceC.show the judges of the competition what they could doD.make the teams try out their ideas44.What is the author's purpose to write this passage?Passage IIINo one can accuse Howard Schultz of inaction since he returned as chief executive of Starbucks, the firm he built into a multinational only to watch it stumble under his successor. Barely a month has gone by over the past year without the firm announcing some new initiative or other. The latest came on February 17th in New York, when Mr Schultz unveiled Via, an instant coffee which, he claims, tastes just as good as Java brewed in the shop by one of the firm s baristas.Mr Schultz hopes to win a share of the $17 billion or so the world spends on instant coffee—a product which, he sniffs, has not 'improved in decades. Starbucks itself has spent 20 years pursuing the holy grail of an instant coffee that tastes as good as the fresh stuff. Don Valencia, the firm's first head of research and development, who created the blended and frozen firappuccino drinks that earn Starbucks $2 billion a year, could never find a way to scale up an instant formula he had developed at home. When Schultz returned as chief executive, he noticed that there had been some technological advances, allowing finer grinding, for example. So he asked the R&D team to repeat the recently deceased Valencia's experiments, and found that "we had broken the code". The name Via is a hat-lip to Valencia—though during development it was known as Jaws (just add water, stir)Starbucks says it has patents that should prevent competitors from quickly replicating Via, which will go on sale in some American stores next month. The opportunity may, however, be biggest in other countries: in Britain over 80%of coffee sold is instant, compared with just 10% in America.Assuming Starbucks drinkers decide that Via tastes good, the companywill have to get the price right. .At first, it will crone in packets of 12 or 13 individual servings, for 83 and 98 cents a cup respectively. That is much more than other instants, but much less than a cup of coffee at one of Starbucks' stores. The risk is that the firm's existing customers may abandon counter service and start making their own cup of instant. That would encourage them to visit Starbucks less often, a trend that is already gathering pace with the recession. Forthe first lime in Starbucks' history, same-store sales have fallen.Mr Schultz has had to accelerate the store-closure programme that he had started in order to correct the over-expansion which prmnptcd his return to the helm. Most of us bare noticed how important physical setting is to efficiency and comfort in our work. Today s corporations hire human engineering specialists and spend a considerable amount of time and money to make sure that the physical environments of buildings are fit for the activities of their inhabitants.Similarly, college classroom space should be designed to encourage the activity of critical thinking. We bave entered the twenty-first century, but step into almost any college classroom and you step back in time at least a hundred years. Desks are normally in straight rows, so students can clearly see the teacher but not all their classmates. The assumption behind such an arrangement is obvious: Everything of importance comes from the teacher. With a little imagination and effort, unless desks are fixed to the floor, the teachercan correct this situation and create space that encourages interchange among students. In small or standard size classes, chairs, desks, and tables can be arranged in a variety of ways: circles, U-shapes, or semicircles. The primary goal should be for everyone to be able to see everyone else. Larger classes, particularly those held in lecture halls, unfortunately, allow much less flexibility.Arrangement of the classroom should also make it easy to divide students into small groups for discussion or problem-solving exercises. Small classes with movable desks and tables present no problem. Even in large lecture halls, it is possible for students to turn around and form groups of four to six. Breaking a class into small groups provides more opportunities for students to interact with each other, think out loud, and see how other students' thinking processes operate----all essential elements in developing new modes of critical thinking. In courses that regularly use a small group format, students might be asked to stay in the same small groups throughout the course. A colleague of mine allows students to move around during the first two weeks, until they find a group they are comfortable with. He then asks them to stay in the same seat, with the same group, from that time on. This not only creates a comfortable setting for interaction but helps him learn students' names and faces.50.Desk arrangement in a traditional classroom is associated with the ideathat__ _A.students should not be active' learners in the classroomB.it is useless for students to participate in class activityC.the teacher is the chief knowledge sourceD.it is important for students to see the blackboard clearly51.The expression "step back in time at least a hundred years" (in Paragraph 2) is intendedto convey the idea that .A.college classrooms often remind you of ymlr college lifeB.critical thinking was encouraged even a century agoC.a hundred years ago, desk arrangement in a classroom was quite differentD.there is not much change in the college educational idea over the pasthundred years52.The primary purpose of desk rearrangement is ________________ .A.for the teacher to divide students into small groupsB.to make it possible for students to interact with each otherC.for the teacher to find out how students thinkD.give students more opportunities to practice speaking53.Which of the following is NOT true according to t i l e passage?A.New kinds of desks and chairs should be made.B.Many companies are trying to improve the working settings for their employees.C.Interaction between students is essential to the training of critical thinking.D. A comfortable environment leads to higher working efficiency.54.What's the greatest advantage in allowing each student to find his own group?IV. Nothing is more futile and more self-defeating than thebitterness of spurned love, the vengeful feeling that someone else has “comebetween” oneself and a beloved. This is always a distortion of reality, forpeople are not the captives or victims of others---they are free agents, working out their own destinies for good or for ill.
We tend to treat persons like goods. We even speak of thechildren “belonging” to their parents. But nobody “belongs” to anyone else. Eachperson belongs to himself, and to God. Children are entrusted to their parents, and if their parents do not treat them properly, the state has a right toremove them from their parents’ trusteeship.

Part 1: English-Chinese Translation
Passage 1
WATERLOO, Belgium — The region around this Belgian city is busily preparing to commemorate the 200th anniversary in 2015 of one of the major battles in European military history. But weaving a path through the preparations is proving almost as tricky as making one’s way across the battlefield was back then, when the Duke of Wellington, as commander of an international alliance of forces, crushed Napoleon. A rambling though dilapidated farmstead called Hougoumont, which was crucial to the battle’s outcome, is being painstakingly restored as an educational center. Nearby, an underground visitor center is under construction, and roads and monuments throughout the rolling farmland where once the sides fought are being refurbished. More than 6,000 military buffs are expected to reenact individual skirmishes. While the battle ended two centuries ago, however, hard feelings have endured. Memories are long here, and not everyone here shares Britain’s enthusiasm for celebrating Napoleon’s defeat. Every year, in districts of Wallonia, the French-speaking part of Belgium, there are fetes to honor Napoleon, according to Count Georges Jacobs de Hagen, a prominent Belgian industrialist and chairman of a committee responsible for restoring Hougoumont. “Napoleon, for these people, was very popular,” Mr. Jacobs, 73, said over coffee. “That is why, still today, there are some enemies of the project.”

International use of the dollar to hold foreign-exchange reserves, denominate financial transactions, invoice trade, and as a vehicle in currency markets is below its level during the heyday of the Bretton Woods era, from 1945 to 1971. But most people would be surprised by what the most recent numbers show. There is an abundance of explanations for the downward trend. Since the Vietnam War, US budget deficits, money creation, and current-account deficits have often been high.Presumably as a result, the dollar has lost value relative to other major currencies or in terms of purchasing power. Meanwhile, the US share of global output has declined. And, most recently, the disturbing willingness of some members of the US Congress to pursue a strategy that would cause the Treasury to default on legal obligations has undermined global confidence in the dollar’s privileged status. Moreover, some emerging-market currencies are joining the club of international currencies for the first time. Indeed, some analysts have suggested that the Chinese renminbi may rival the dollar as the leading international currency by the end of the decade. But the dollar’s status as an international currency has not fallen uniformly. Interestingly, the periods when the public is most concerned about the issue do not coincide with the periods when the dollar’s share in international transactions is in fact falling. It is not an eternal law of nature that the dollar shall always be number one. The pound sterling had the top spot in the nineteenth century, only to be surpassed by the dollar in the first half of the twentieth century. The day may come when the dollar, too, succumbs to a rival. But today is not that day.

Music means different things to different people and sometimes even different things to the same person at different moments of his life. It might be poetic, philosophical, sensual, or mathematical, but in any case it must, in my view, have something to do with the soul of the human being. Hence it is metaphysical;but the means of expression is purely and exclusively physical: sound. I believe it is precisely this permanent coexistence of metaphysical message through physical means that is the strength of music.(46)It is also the reason why when we try to describe music with words, all we can do is articulate our reactions to it, and not grasp music itself.Beethoven's importance in music has been principally defined by the revolutionary nature of his compositions. He freed music from hitherto prevailing conventions of harmony and structure. Sometimes I feel in his late works a will to break all signs of continuity. The music is abrupt and seemingly disconnected, as in the last piano sonata. In musical expression, he did not feel restrained by the weight of convention.(47)By all accounts he was a freethinking person, and a courageous one, and I find courage an essential quality for the understanding, let alone the performance, of his works. This courageous attitude in fact becomes a requirement for the performers of Beethoven's music. His compositions demand the performer to show courage, for example in the use of dynamics.(48)Beethoven's habit of increasing the volume with an intense crescendo and then abruptly following it with a sudden soft passage was only rarely used by composers before him.Beethoven was a deeply political man in the broadest sense of the word. He was not interested in daily politics, but concerned with questions of moral behavior and the larger questions of right and wrong affecting the entire society.(49)Especially significant was his view of freedom, which, for him, was associated with the rights and responsibilities of the individual: he advocated freedom of thought and of personal expression.Beethoven's music tends to move from chaos to order as if order were an imperative of human existence. For him, order does not result from forgetting or ignoring the disorders that plague our existence; order is a necessary development, an improvement that may lead to the Greek ideal of spiritual elevation. It is not by chance that the Funeral March is not the last movement of the Eroica Symphony, but the second, so that suffering does not have the last word.。
Section II Reading ComprehensionPart AText 1
