When it comes to American culture and technology, there are a few things that come to mind. First, there's the constant use of smartphones and social media. It seems like everyone is always on their phone, checking their notifications and scrolling through their feeds. This has both positive and negative effects on our culture. On one hand, it allows us to stay connected with friends and family, and to easily access information and entertainment. On the other hand, it can lead to addiction and a lack of face-to-face communication.Another aspect of American culture and technology isthe emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship. We have a thriving startup culture, with companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook leading the way in innovation and creativity. This culture of innovation has led to countlesstechnological advancements, from smartphones and laptops toself-driving cars and virtual reality. One example of this culture of innovation is the rise of the gig economy. Companies like Uber and Airbnb have disrupted traditional industries and created new opportunities for people to work on their own terms. This has both positive and negative effects, as it allows for greater flexibility and autonomy, but also raises questions about job security and worker protections.Overall, American culture and technology are deeply intertwined, with technology shaping our culture andculture shaping our use of technology. While there are certainly challenges and drawbacks to this relationship, there are also countless opportunities for innovation and progress.

Technology in America

Technology in AmericaMcCormick's Revolutionary ReaperMaking Illinois the Hub of AgricultureThe McCormick reaper was a boon to wheat farmers; the first model could do the work of three men. As Cyrus McCormick perfected and improved the capabilities of the new implement, more land was put into production.Technology is the use of science and engineering to produce something that is effective and useful.America changed from an agricultural country in the early 19th century to the most advanced technological country in the late 20th century. This was a remarkable development. Why did technology develop so successfully in the United States of America?Early 19th centuryThere were many inventions during this period such as Eli Whitney‟s cotton gin and also his mass production process for guns. Whitney and many other inventors are very well-known by Americans. However, there were many other people, not so well known, who played a significant role in the development of the inventions into industries which were subsequently economically successful. Many of the original inventors had problems with their new inventions, and it often took many years, plus the efforts of many other people, to make the new invention work well. For instance the mechanical reaper (invented by McCormick) took 20 years of development and improvement to become genuinely effective in harvesting large areas of wheat. It is the consequences of these inventions that are most important for us to understand. The mechanical reaper worked best when it had to harvest large areas of wheat. Farmers began joining their farms together to make very big farms. As a result, America was soon producing very large quantities of wheat and other crops very efficiently. Because such large quantities of crops were being produced, America had to develop a better system of transportation. The answer was the railroad system. This system was able to move large quantities of crops, very efficiently. The development of the railroad required engineers and scientists to overcome many problems. The solution to the problems took many years to achieve and involved many people. Although many people know that James Watt invented the steam engine, fewer know the names of the engineers and scientists who developed it into a really useful and successful machine.Late 19th Century and Early 20th CenturyFrom the invention of a new device (such as the electric light bulb) to the practical use of the invention not only requires a lot of research and development but also requires highly effective manufacturing skills. America was at the forefront of developing the …science‟ of management. The …science of management‟ used critical analysis of the whole manufacturing process, so that products could be made in the most efficient way. Thisdevelopment was a major boost to the American economy which would rise to become the major economy in the world. The introduction of electrical devices revolutionised life for both citizens and business. Such things as electric lights, radio, electric motors, household appliances (washing machines etc) and computers changed society dramatically. For instance, until the introduction of the radio, the citizens of America previously could only read about the news and would rarely have the opportunity to see or hear the president or any famous person. With the advent of the radio, citizens could listen to their president on a regular basis; they could listen to famous film stars and sports heroes as well as hear poems, literature and other cultural activities. The ability to hear these people on radio dramatically affected the way that people perceived their politicians and other leaders. It greatly enhanced people‟s ability to understand domestic and international affairs. It also opened up cultural appreciation to the whole population, not just the few who could afford to go to theatre.Mid 20th Century and Late 20th CenturyThe changes in household technologies, such as the refrigerator, washing machine and vacuum cleaner, led to a much easier lifestyle for the family, who then had more spare time to do other things. What did people do with their extra spare time? They did many things such as self development and study; some worked longer hours or drove their children to various activities (such as sport or music lessons) and played with their children. The advent of television into most homes had a profound effect on society. People watched television on a regular basis and not only were they entertained at home but they were informed by the news and public affairs programs. By the end of the 20th century however, many children were watching TV and/or playing on the computer for many hours each day. Some of t hese “couch potatoes” are now presenting serious health concerns for society. The computer developed from a huge device, used only for military purposes, to the small PC (personal computer) that we now use. The computer has revolutionized our lives. Apart from the impact of the Internet with its associated search engines (Google), email and other communication abilities, and access to knowledge, it is also a vital part of science and engineering, business and intercultural understanding. However, computers also have the ability to intrude into our lives through such things as data files which store much of our personal details, computer profiling and surveillance of our personal lives. The development of military rockets in the mid 20th century led to the exploration of space, the deployment of satellites and a deeper understanding of the beginning of the universe.Psychologically space exploration has made us think about ourselves and our planet quite differently. The world now sees itself more as place where everyone affects everyone else. We better understand global problems such as global warming, and also the need to do something about it. We better understand our human frailty and the forces which made us (and which could possibly destroy us). We can see any part of world at anytime (secrets are hard to keep). We are no longer as insular as we once were. We may one day have to leave this planet and find another place to live; the development of science and a better understanding of the universe could make that possible. ConclusionOver many decades the USA has developed the infrastructure for the continued development of ideas and products. What are some of the attributes that the USA has? A research-focused education system; a question ing society, passion, the willingness to “fail” and the willingness to extend research into areas which may have no obvious or immediate benefit. The USA has a very well developed education system, a stable government system, and places a strong emphasis on long-term planning and sustainability. The depth of knowledge and understanding has grown exponentially in the last few decades. This trend is likely to continue.Consider some of the changes that I have personally seen since 1950 in the areas of medicine, material possessions, mobility, personal relationships, and international affairs. What was life like in 1950?What is life like now in 2007?What will life be like in 2050? (you will be 64 years old!!)Table 1-1-18. Trends in World Population11。

《SCI》、《EI》、《ISTP》、《SSCI》、《CSSCI》、《A&HCI》

Becht and DeLong

Becht and DeLong

In the realm of human achievement and progress, the United States of America stands as a beacon of innovation. From the early pioneers of technology to the cutting-edge advancements of today, American inventors have left an indelible mark on history. This essay delves into the rich tapestry of American ingenuity, exploring the diverse array of inventions that have shaped not only the nation itselfbut also the world at large. One cannot discuss American innovation without acknowledging the contributions of Thomas Edison. Often hailed as America's greatest inventor, Edison's inventions fundamentally altered the course of human civilization. His development of the practical incandescent light bulb revolutionized the way we illuminate our world, bringinglight to the darkness and ushering in a new era of productivity and safety.Continuing the legacy of Edison, the 20th century saw a surge of technological breakthroughs emanating from American laboratories and workshops. The invention of the transistor by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley laid the groundwork for the digital age, giving rise to the modern electronics industry and paving the way for innovations such as computers, smartphones, and the internet.Furthermore, the advent of the internet itself stands as one of the most transformative inventions of the modern era. While its origins can be traced back to research conducted by the United States Department of Defense, it was American innovators and entrepreneurs who seized upon its potential and brought it into the mainstream. Visionaries like Tim Berners-Lee, often credited with inventing the World Wide Web, and pioneers such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, who popularized personal computing, played pivotal roles in shaping the digital landscape we inhabit today.Beyond the realm of technology, American inventors have made significant contributions to fields as diverse as medicine, transportation, and entertainment. The development of the polio vaccine by Dr. Jonas Salk stands as a triumph of medical science, virtually eradicating a once-feared disease from the face of the earth.

Here is the English essay on the topic "Introduction to Science in English and Chinese":Science is a systematic and structured approach to understanding the natural world around us. It involves the observation, experimentation, and analysis of various phenomena to uncover the underlying principles and laws that govern the universe. Science is not just a collection of facts, but a way of thinking and a process of discovery that has revolutionized our understanding of the world and has led to countless advancements in technology, medicine, and our overall quality of life. One of the key aspects of science is the scientific method which involves formulating hypotheses, designing experiments to test those hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. This process is iterative and often involves multiple cycles of experimentation and refinement before a theory or law can be established. The scientific method is a powerful tool that has been used to make groundbreaking discoveries in fields ranging from physics and chemistry to biology and astronomy.另一方面 science 也是一个全球性的学科 it is a global discipline that transcends borders and language barriers. Scientists from around the world collaborate on research projects and share their findings through publications and conferences. This global nature of science has led to the development of a common scientific language that is used to communicate ideas and findings across cultures. This language is predominantly English which has become the lingua franca of the scientific community. Many of the world's leading scientific journals and conferences are conducted in English, and it is essential for scientists to be proficient in the language in order to effectively communicate their work and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in their field.科学领域的英语使用在中国也有着广泛的应用 the use of English in the scientific field is also widely applied in China. Chinese scientists and researchers are increasingly publishing their work in English-language journals and participating in international conferences and collaborations. This has helped to raise the profile of Chinese science on the global stage and has also provided Chinese scientists with greater exposure to the latest research and ideas from around the world. However, the use of English in science also presents some challenges for Chinese scientists. Many Chinese students may find it difficult tocommunicate their ideas effectively in English, particularly when it comes to complex technical concepts. There is also a concern that the dominance of English in science may lead to a loss of traditional Chinese scientific terminology and knowledge. To address these challenges, there have been efforts to promote the use of Chinese in the scientific domain. This includes the development of scientific publications and resources in the Chinese language, as well as the incorporation of Chinese scientific terminology and concepts into the global scientific discourse.Overall, the relationship between science and language is a complex and evolving one. While English has become the dominant language of science, the contributions of scientists from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds are essential to the continued advancement of human knowledge and understanding. As we move forward, it will be important to find ways to bridge the linguistic divides and promote cross-cultural collaboration and exchange in the pursuit of scientific discovery.。

Scientific AmericanForty-six million years ago, northwest Montana was a tropical forest of giant ferns, conifers and ginkgos. Tiny primates lived there, as did rhinos and horses and crocs. Along with some less charismatic creatures: mosquitoes. One of those millions of mosquitoes was then blown onto the surface of an ancient lake. Unable to lift off, it eventually sank to the bottom. And became a fossil. The fossil mosquito was recently found. And analyzed. Scientists found that its belly contained iron, bound up in a molecule called heme—the compound in blood that carries oxygen. So it appears this sucker died and fossilized with a bellyful of blood—the only known specimen. The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Dale E. Greenwalt et al., Hemoglobin-derived porphyrins preserved in a Middle Eocene blood-engorged mosquito]Now I know what you're thinking. "This fossilized tree sap waited for millions of years, with the mosquito inside. Until Jurassic Park scientists came along."Well, not quite. DNA breaks down too quickly. And this skeeter lived 20 million years after dinos went extinct. Though researchers say it may have dined on birds--which are, in some sense, blood relatives.—Christopher Intagliata。

Arctic MeltEarth's North and South Poles are famous for being cold and icy. Last year, however, the amount of ice in the Arctic Ocean fell to a record low1.Normally, ice builds in Arctic waters around the North Pole each winter and shrinks during the summer. But for many years, the amount of ice left by the end of summer has been declining.Since 1979, each decade has seen an 11.4 percent drop in end-of-summer ice cover2. Between 1981 and 2000, ice in the Arctic lost 22 percent of its thickness -- becoming 1.13 meters thinner.Last summer, Arctic sea ice reached its skimpiest levels yet. By the end of summer 2007, the ice had shrunk to cover just 4.2 million square kilometers. That's 38 percent less area than the average cover at that time of year. Andit's a very large 23 percent below the previous record low, which was set just 2 years ago. This continuing trend has scientists concernedThere may be several reasons for the ice melt, says Jinlun Zhang, an oceanographer at the University of Washington3 in Seattle. Unusually strong winds blew through the Arctic last summer. The winds pushed much of the ice out of the central Arctic, leaving a large area of thin ice and open water4.Scientists also suspect that fewer clouds cover the Arctic now than in the past. Clearer skies allow more sunlight to reach the ocean. The extra heat warms both the water and the atmosphere. In parts of the Arctic Ocean last year, surface temperatures were 3.5℃Celsius warmer than average and 1.5℃ warmer than the pr evious record high5.With both air and water getting warmer, the ice is melting from both above and below. In some parts of the Beaufort Sea6, north of Alaska and western Canada, ice that measured 3.3m thick at the beginning of the summer measured just 50 centimeters by season's end.The new measurements suggest that melting is far more severe than scientists have seen by just looking at ice cover from above, says Donald K. Perovich, a geophysicist at the U. S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, N.H.7Some scientists fear that the Arctic is stuck in a warming trend from which it may never recover.练习:1. In an article in the July 10 issue of Science, University of Michigan2 geologist Rodney Ewing and Princeton University3 nuclear physicist Frank von Hippel argue that, although federal agencies should set standards and issue licenses for the approval of nuclear facilities, local communities and states should have the final approval on the siting of these facilities. The authors propose the development of multiple sites that would service the regions where nuclear reactors are located."The main goal…, should be to provide the Unied States with multiple process that requires acceptance by host communities and states," the authors write.Ewing and yon Hippel also analyze the reasons why Yucca Mountain, selected by Congress4 in 1987 as the only site to be investigated for long-term nuclear waste disposal, finally was shelved5 after more than three decades of often controversial debate. The reasons include the site's geological problems, management problems, important changes in the Environmental Protection Agency's standard, unreliable funding and the failure to involve local communities in the decision-making process.Going forward, efforts should be directed at locating storage facilities in the nation's northeastern, southeastern, midwestern and western regions, and states within a given region should be responsible for developing solutions that suit their particular circumstances. Transportation of nuclear waste over long distances, which was a concern with the Yucca Mountain site, would be less of a problem because temporary storage or geological disposal sites could be located closer to reactors."This regional approach would be similar to the current approach in Europe, where spent nuclear fuel6 and high-level nuclear waste7 from about 150 reactors and reprocessing plants is to be moved to a number of geological repositories in a variety of rock types8," said Rodney Ewing, who has written extensively about the impact of nuclear waste management on the environment and who has analyzed safety assessment criteria for the controversial Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.
