Since at least the days of Aristotle, a search for universal principles has characterized the scientific enterprise. In some ways, this quest for commonalities defines science: without it, there is no underlying order and pattern, merely as many explanations as there are things in the world. Newton's laws of motion, the oxygen theory of combustion and Darwinian evolution each bind a host of different phenomena into a single explicatory framework.46. In physics, one approach takes this impulse for unification to its extreme, and seeks a theory of everything —a single generative equation for all we see. It is becoming less clear, however, that such a theory would be a simplification, given the proliferation of dimensions and universes that it might entail. Nonetheless, unification of sorts remains a major goal.46.

参考译文:themeNOUN θiːm1 the subject or main idea in a talk, piece of writing or work of artThe stories are all variations on the theme of unhappy marriage. However, subject matter is indeed not the decisive factor by which we judge a novel of its depth as well as (of ) its artistic appeal and ideological content (or: as to whether a novel digs deep or not or whether it excels in artistic appeal and ideological content). Some people compare Austen’s works to olives: the more you chew them, the tastier they become. This comparison is based not only on (This is not only because of ) her expressive language and her creative contribution to the development of novel writing as an art, but also on (because of ) the fact that what hides behind her light and lively narrative is something implicit and opaque (not so explicit and transparent). Mrs. Smith once observed, women writers often sought (made attempts) to rectify the existing value concepts (orders) by changing people’s o pinions on what is ―important‖ and what is not.E-C原文Rural ADJECTIVEˈrʊərəl [US UALLY BEFORE NOUN]connected with or like the countrysiderural areasa rural economyrural Americaa rural way of life对比I, by comparison, living in my overpriced city apartment, walking to work past putrid sacks of street garbage, paying usurious taxes to local and state governments I generally abhor, I am rated middle class. This causes me to wonder, do the measurement make sense? Are we measuring only that which is easily measured--- the numbers on the money chart --- and ignoring values more central to the good life? For my sons there is of course the rural bounty of fresh-grown vegetables, line-caught fish and the shared riches of neighbors’ orchards and gardens. There is the unpaid baby-sitter for whose children my daughter-in-law baby-sits in return, and neighbors who barter their skills and labor. But more than that, how do you measure serenity? Sense of self?I don’t want to idealize life in small places. There are times when the outside world intrudes brutally,as when the cost of gasoline goes up or developers cast their eyes on untouched farmland. There are cruelties, there is intolerance, there are all the many vices and meanness in small places that exist in large cities. Furthermore, it is harder to ignore them when they cannot be banished psychologically to another part of town or excused as the whims of alien groups --- when they have to be acknowledged as ―part of us.‖Nor do I want to belittle the opportunities for small decencies in cities --- the eruptions of one-stranger-to-another caring that always surprise and delight. But these are sadly more exceptions than rules and are often overwhelmed by the awful corruptions and dangers that surround us.

书名:The Language of Advertising作者:Angela Goddard出版商:Routledge, 2002出版地:LondonCultural variations (Page 79-82)原文:Cultural variationsThe previous unit highlighted the way in which advertising texts can sometimes refer to or base themselves on other texts of all kinds. For readers to understand the references that are being made, they have to have some knowledge of the textural systems in their culture-that is, what types of text are in existence and the way texts of all kinds work. This knowledge is cultural knowledge, in that different cultures may well have different categories of texts and different rules about how they operate. For example, one basic rule about texts in English-speaking cultures is that they operate from left to right: this is the way English writing is read, and this is the way you are making sense of my writing at this moment. This rule is at the base of many ‘before and after’ sequences, such as those in washing powder adverts where the soiled garment on the left becomes the pristine article on the right. This sequence can be ‘read’ so clearly by us that words of explanation are not really needed: the brand name is all that is required for us to attribute the miraculous change to the agency of the product. This textual ordering is so much taken for granted in the West that when a large soap powder manufacturer advertised in the Middle East it was assumed that no changes were needed to the advert, apart from a verbal translation. But Arabic readers read from right to left, as this is the way Arabic script operates. So for audiences in the Middle East, the product was offering to turn their clothes from snowy white to grimy grey. Needless to say, sales of this particular powder were rather disappointing (Cook1992).As well as having different structural rules about how texts work, different cultures bring different attitudes and values to the reading of any text. If advertisers do not take account of these differences, or if they try to break them down, they need to expect difficulty, if not outright failure. One example of failure for this reason was Volvo’s attempt in 1990 to market a car in the same way across the whole of Europe. The campaign was soon dropped through lack of response, and Volvo went back to some previously accepted traditions-promoting the car’s safety to Swiss and UK audiences; its status to French audiences; for Swedish audiences, its economy; and for Germans, its performance ( Brierley 1995).Perhaps the clearest way that cultural variations can be demonstrated is in the area of verbal translations. Translators know that the essence of good advertising copy is not about simply translating the words; it is about encoding the right concepts, and those concepts may well vary from culture to culture- as in the car examples, above. This process is called copy adaptation –adaptation the text to fit the culture of its targeted group.BRAND NAMES:Despite the attention paid within advertising agencies to the whole business of targeting specific groups, there have been some spectacular failures to get it right when companies have tried to go international or global with their products. This has been for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, the brand name of the product has unfortunate associations when translated into other languages. Looking at this area can illustrate how powerful the operation of connotation is – the way in which words can call up associations in our minds. Because of the way we make connections between words and particular ideas, feelings and experiences, brand names are crucial for advertisers. They are very economic, acting as little concentrated capsules of meaning. Where advertisers get it right, readers will do the work to generate all the intended connotations. There are whole companies who specialize in offering research on brand-name connotations to product manufacturers looking for a name for a new product, or looking at how best to market an existing product to new, foreign audiences. These companies –for example Interbrand, and The Brandnaming Company –typically organise brainstorming sessions where they ask groups of people to let their imaginations ’roam free’, from which meetings they arrive at shortlists of names whose suitability is then researched further. Names on the shortlist have to pass certain test: for example, that they are not too close to existing names; that they are pronounceable in all the world’s major languages; that they have the right connotations. The latter, however, is a complex area. Even within one language, connotations can be about quite subtle distinctions. For example, when Pickfords Travel merged with Hogg Robinson two years ago, the shortlist for the new company name had two main contenders: ‘Destinations’, and ‘Going Places’. The new company ch ose the latter, deciding that ‘destinations’ tended to suggest long-haul fights to far-flung place –travel for the privileged. ‘Going Place’, on the other hand, was thought to describe all sorts of travel and therefore be more suitable for the mass market, which was the company’s target. Interestingly, the phrase ‘going places’ also suggests aspiration –we talk about ambitious career people ‘going place’, while there is something of the meaning of foregone conclusion about ‘destinations’, an idea of destiny as something fixed and unalterable, and a destination as a fixed point to whichwe are directed. The mass market is much more likely to identify with the idea of moving up and on, while affluent audiences are arguably going to be more comfortable about the idea of fixedness, since this underpins the idea of inheritance, the opposite of ‘self-made’. In the word ‘going’, there is also the sense of continuous activity in the grammatical ‘ing’ from, and a suggestion of success, as in the phrase ‘a going conc ern’, which attaches to the company as well as to its customers. The French/Latin origin of ‘destination’, compared with the Anglo-Saxon ‘going places’, also connotes elite versus democratic, and abstract versus concrete to English-speaking audiences. The fact that producers are willing to pay significant amounts of money to brand-name consultants is an indication of the extent to which success or failure is thought to rest with this aspect of advertising language: for example, a shortlist of three names for use world wide is likely to cost more in the region of £90,000.Given that connotations within a single language can involve some complex aspects of meaning, as above, it's not surprising that marking departments are prepared to pay up; and the advertising industry has its fair share of translation disasters, as a salutary lesson to those who might be tempted to go it alone in a foreign market.Car companies appear to be particularly accident-prone. While some are spotted in time-for example, Rolls Royce realised that its Silver Mist would not be received well in Germany, as ‘mist’ means excrement-others are launched before the error is revealed. Two examples of the latter include Nissan’s ‘Pantry Boy’ and Ford’s ‘Pinto’; to its Brazilian customers, ‘pinto’ translated as a slang word for ‘tiny male genitals’. Slang is rarely encoded in dictionaries; nor are connotations in general, as dictionary definitions tend to base themselves on denotation- a word’s barest, referential meaning. For example, in a Standard English dictionary, Susannah Hart, Interbrand Director, displays some brand names that fail the connotation test for English speaking audiences. The denotative meaning of the terms ’bachelor’ and ‘spinster’ are ‘unmarried adult male’ and ‘unmarried adult female’, respectively. But these terms have strong connotations, traditionally positive in the case of bachelor and negative in the case of spinster. But even this isn’t the Taboo-the idea of some areas as 'forbidden' and therefore unable to be mentioned -can apply to social groups as well as particular experiences. For example, in the 1970s, sales of Guinness launched a new campaign for the 1980s, designed to target the people who drank Guinness only occasionally, with the intention of getting them to become more regular consumers. Their campaign was a humorous parody of a charity or phobia group, with the slogan 'Friends of theGuinnless'. Although initially sales rose considerably, soon the joke wore thin and the slogan was seen in a negative light. When their campaign failed, the company turned away from social realism towards surrealism, featuring Rutger Hauer as a sage-like figure in enigmatic and mysterious landscapes. The new slogan, 'Pure Genius', reversed the previous idea of something lacking ( Brierley 1995).It can be very revealing of cultural changes to look at the way one of product has been advertised over a number of years, particularly if that product touches on an area of culture taboo.Activity:Text: Tampax is an advert from a 1966 campaign featuring in magazines aim at young girls (for example Sugar, Bliss, Enjoy). Following it, in Text: Older adverts are some adverts that featured in women's magazines in 1930s and 1950s.1. What language differences do you observe in the adverts from these different eras?2. What do you surmise about some of the cultural changes that have occurred over the years, in attitudes towards menstruation?Commentary:Compared with the older texts, the modern one is extremely explicit; resembling in its content more a set of instructions for use than few well-chosen words we’ve come to think of as characteristic of advertising language. Thereare elements of intertexuality here: as well as being a set of instructions, the text could also be, at first glance, a newspaper article or a problem page. The idea ofan information text is suggested visually by the typographical features of column layout and darker print at the top of each column. These intertextual referencesare not accidental, of course: instructions, news articles and problem pages all share the idea.

My parents’ divorce was final. The house had been sold and the day had come to move. Thirty years of the family’s life was now crammed into the garage. All was frozen in limbo between the life just passed and the one to come.

The sunlight pushing its way through the window splattered against a barricade of boxes. Like a fluorescent river, it streamed down the sides and flooded the cracks of the cold, cement floor. I stood in the doorway between the house and garage and wondered if the sunlight would ever again penetrate the memories packed inside those boxes. For an instant, the cardboard boxes appeared as tombstones, monuments to those memories.

Every Christmas should begin with the sound of bells and when I was a child mine always did. But they were sleigh bells not church bells for we lived in a part of Cedar Rapids Iowa where there were no churches. My bells were on my father’s team of horses as he drove up to our horse-headed hitching post with the bobsled that would3 take us to celebrate Christmas on the family farm ten miles out in the country. My father would bring the team down Fifth Avenue at a smart trot fli cking his whip over the horses’ rumps and making the bells double their light thin jangling over the snow whose radiance threw back a brilliance like the sound of bells.

Since at least the days of Aristotle, a search for universal principles has characterized the scientific enterprise. In some ways, this quest for commonalities defines science: without it, there is no underlying order and pattern, merely as many explanations as there are things in the world. Newton's laws of motion, the oxygen theory of combustion and Darwinian evolution each bind a host of different phenomena into a single explicatory framework.

(46)In physics, one approach takes this impulse for unification to its extreme, and seeks a theory of everything — a single generative equation for all we see. It is becoming less clear, however, that such a theory would be a simplification, given the proliferation of dimensions and universes that it might entail. Nonetheless, unification of sorts remains a major goal.

But there is more to the matter than this. English, brought to close quarters with formidable rivals, has won very often, not by force of numbers, but by the sheer weight of its merit. “In wealth, wisdom, and strict economy,” said the eminent Jakob Grimm a century ago, “none of the other living languages can vie with it.”To which the eminent Otto Jespersen was adding only the other day: English is simple, it has clear sounds, it packs its words closely together, it is logical in their arrangement, and it is free from all pedantic flubdub.
In part, of course, its spread has been due to the extraordinary dispersion of the English-speaking peoples. They have been the greatest travelers of modern times, and the most adventurous merchants, and the most assiduous colonists. Moreover, they have been, on the whole, poor linguists, and so they have dragged their language with them, and forced it upon the human race.

English Translation (700 words):In recent years, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) has become more and more rapid, attracting worldwide attention. AI refers to the intelligence demonstrated by machines as opposed to natural intelligence exhibited by humans. It is a branch of computer science that aims to create intelligent machines capable of mimicking human cognitive abilities such as learning and problem solving. The application of AI is widespread, ranging from self-driving cars to virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa. Many industries have also benefited from AI technology, including healthcare, finance, and manufacturing. For example, in healthcare, AI algorithms can help diagnose diseases and provide personalized treatment plans based on patient data. In finance, AI is used for fraud detection and financial predictions. In manufacturing, AI is utilized to optimize production processes and improve efficiency. One of the main challenges facing AI development is the issue of ethical concerns. There are debates on issues such as privacy, bias, and job displacement. Privacy concerns arise due to the vast amount of data collected and analyzed by AI systems. For instance, the use of facial recognition technology has raised concerns about invasion of privacy. Bias is another ethical concern, as AI systems can be trained on biased data, leading to discriminatory outcomes. Job displacement is also a significant concern, as the automation of tasks by AI may lead to unemployment for certain industries.Furthermore, the ethical implications of AI are not only restricted to technical and operational aspects but also encompass broader social and philosophical considerations. Questions about the moral responsibility of AI and the potential impact on human values and relationships are being raised. The development of autonomous AI systems raises the issue of decision-making and accountability. Who is responsible if an AI system makes a mistake or causes harm?To address these concerns, organizations and researchers are working on establishing ethical guidelines and frameworks for the development and use of AI. Ethical considerations should be integrated into the design of AI systems to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability. For example, algorithms should be audited to detect and mitigate biases. Data protection measures should also be implemented to safeguard individuals' privacy. In conclusion, the rapid development of AI has revolutionized various industries and brought about numerous benefits. However, ethical concerns need to be addressed to ensure that AI technology is used responsibly. It is crucial to establish ethical frameworks and guidelines to guide the development and use of AI. As AI continues to advance, it is essential to strike a balance between innovation and ethics to create a better future for humanity.。
