浅析自营进出口企业公司简介汉译英的翻译原则[摘要] 本文分析了公司简介的语言特点,根据Peter Newmark的观点提出了公司简介翻译应遵循的原则,并结合自营进出口企业的公司简介翻译案例探讨了原则的有效运用。
[关键词] 公司简介 Peter Newmark对拥有自营进出口权的企业来说,公司简介英译的好坏可能会决定公司是否能获得订单,留住客户。
然而由于译者水平,译文中因为没有遵循一定翻译原则而造成的误译、不当翻译处处可见,严重地影响了译文的效果。
关于公司简介英译的研究很少,徐芳芳等(2005)概要分析了公司简介英语译文中误译、欠额翻译、文化错误、语法错误及逻辑问题等常见的问题,本研究借用Peter Newmark关于不同功能语言的翻译论断分析了公司简介的语言功能特点及其翻译原则,并结合自营进出口公司的公司简介翻译案例探讨了原则的有效运用。
一、公司简介的功能和内容根据Peter Newmark关于语言功能的分析,公司简介主要有两种功能:一是提供公司信息,二是宣传公司,引起注意,呼吁合作。
从第一种功能上看,公司简介应使用具信息功能的语言,应使用具有简洁性、逻辑性、紧凑性和客观性特点的科技英语,词汇上会出现专业词汇,语法上则多用一般现在时态和被动语态(张虎,2002);而从第二个层面上看,公司简介也会采用一些具呼唤功能(Vocative)的语言,如“我们将继续领导操作仪表的潮流并挑战未来!”等。
从内容上看,公司简介包括1)公司背景;2)服务或产品;3)公司结构;4)经营范围;5)近期重大发展;6)合作邀请。
前5项多采用信息功能语言,但也不乏自我宣传色彩,第6项则都使用呼唤功能语言。

大多公司将中文网页翻译成英文,其中首当其中的就是公司简介的翻译。
公司简介犹如公司的一张名片,是客户了解公司的第一面窗口,英文翻译的好坏可能会决定公司是否能吸引顾客和获得客户。
然而由于译者水平,翻译角度以及中西方文化形态、语言习惯和认知模式上的巨大差异,译文中因为没有遵循一定翻译原则而造成的错误和跨文化、跨语言的语用失误时有发生,严重地影响了译文的效果。
因此,针对公司简介语言特点和功能探讨其翻译原则,从而避免公司简介翻译常见错误和译文的语用失误,对于减少误解、达到公司介绍目的和效果具有重大意义。
关于公司简介英译的研究很少,徐芳芳等(2005)概要分析了公司简介英语译文中误译、欠额翻译、文化错误、语法错误及逻辑问题等常见的问题,本研究首先借用Peter Newmark关于不同功能语言的翻译论断分析了公司简介的语言功能特点及其翻译原则,并从语用翻译理论的角度进一步分析了译文的语用失误问题,运用所提出的原则针对公司简介翻译中出现的语用失误问题提出了解决方案。
1、公司简介的语言特点和总体翻译原则公司简介主要有两种功能:一是提供公司信息,二是宣传公司,引起注意,呼吁合作。
从第一种功能上看,公司简介应使用具信息功能(Inform ative)的语言,尤其是一些科技公司,应使用具有简洁性、逻辑性、紧凑性和客观性特点的科技英语,词汇上会出现大量的专业词汇,语法上则多用一般现在时态和被动语态(张虎,20 02);而从第二个层面上看,公司简介也会采用一些具呼唤功能(Vocative)的语言,如“我们将继续领导操作仪表的潮流并挑战未来!”,“我们将以最上乘的质量、最低廉的价格、最优质的服务同广大客户密切合作,实现双赢,共创辉煌。
热诚欢迎您的合作!”,“我们的服务宗旨是顾客第一、品质至上,欢迎各界朋友来厂洽淡、看样、订货。
xx欢迎您的加入”,“我们相信,我们的不懈努力终将赢得广大客户的一片赞誉!奠定xx良好的企业品牌基础!最终使xx成为您的最佳服务厂商!”等。
从内容上看,公司简介包括1)公司背景,包括如何成立,建立人,公司的历史,内容发展;2)公司服务内容或者产品介绍;3)公司员工和公司的结构介绍;4)公司的顾客群或者范围介绍;5)公司近期内的重大发展介绍;6)合作邀请。
前5项多采用信息功能语言,但其中也不乏自我宣传色彩,第6项则都使用呼唤功能语言。
在营销传播(Marketing communication)意义上,公司简介是一种公关宣传手段(Publicity),现代营销的核心是以顾客为中心(Customer-centered)(Kotler, 2004), 公司简介的读者对象为目标受众(Target audience), 因此其语言应充分考虑受众特点,根据顾客为中心的理念来组织语言。
总的来说,结合Peter Newmark的分析,公司简介翻译时应遵循原则应如下:理想风格(Ideal style):介绍前5项时,客观简练,第6项采用说服性语言,但总体语言应平实,用语应具体,以事实为主;译文侧重点(Text Emphasis):目标语(Target Language),针对目标受众而组织翻译;翻译聚焦点(Focus):读者(Reader (2nd person)),以顾客为中心,可用“you”指代所以可能的受众(potential audience)。
翻译方法(Method):功能对等(Equivalent-effect),主要陈述事实;翻译单位(Unit of translation): 根据具体情况而定,信息性强的部分以句子为最大单位,不强的部分以语段为最大单位;语言形式(Type of language): 事实型(Factual),迎合国外客户喜欢语言平实,客观介绍,注重信息的特点;同时由于公司简介的阅读对象并不仅仅局限于专业人士,作为公关宣传媒介,受众往往是大众,所以语言应尽量简单,有亲和力,接近口语,英语国家公司简介大多有这样的特点;意义流失或取舍(Loss of meaning): 在这点上,应考虑文化差异问题,根据文化差异进行取舍;新词和新意义的使用(New words and meanings): 一般不采用,避免晦涩;不得以可进行解释。
关键词保留(Key words (retain):保留标记词(Token words),或加以解释;对不常见比喻的处理(Usual metaphors):考虑到文化差异,应解释或再造(recreation);译文相对原文的长度(Length in relation to original):稍长。
2、公司简介语用失误问题及解决方法语用失误,是指不同文化背景的人们在言语交际中,由于说话方式或表达习惯的不同,或者由于一方对另一方的社会文化背景知识缺乏了解,在跨文化交际中发生误解、障碍或冲突,影响交际效果的现象(何自然,1988)。
根据英国语言学家Thomas观点,语用失误大体上可分为两种:语用语言失误(Pragmalinguistic failure),即将本族语对某一词语或结构的语用意义套用在外语上或在特定语言环境下无法正确表达自己用意而造成的语用失误;社交语用失误(sociapragmatic failure),即由于文化背景的不同而犯的语用错误,往往涉及到那些话该讲,哪些话不该讲,说话双方社会地位的差异,人们的相对权利和义务等,与人们的价值观念有关(胡文仲,1994)。
翻译中的语用语言失误是指违反英语的语言习惯,误用目的语的表达方式,或将母语习惯表达套入目的语而造成的语用失误。
社会语用失误是因文化差异在交际中不了解目的语所处的文化背景而导致语言形式选择上失误。
这两类语用失误的区分并不是绝对的。
由于语境不同,双方各自的话语意图和对对方话语的理解都可能不同,因而某一不合适的话语从一个角度来看可能是语用语言方面的失误,但从另一个角度来看也可能是社会语用方面的失误(何自然,1997) 。
无论是哪种语用失误,在翻译时都应尽力避免。
结合语用学和翻译二者的语用翻译理论是近十多年来才出现的一种翻译新论。
语用翻译理论用于处理翻译中的语用问题,是一种等效翻译观,它通过两种语言的对比分别研究语用语言等效和社会语用等效的问题。
语用语言等效就是用译文最切近而又最自然的对等语,将原文内容表达出来,以求等效;社会语用等效从社会、文化交际的角度去考察语言的使用。
语用翻译的目的就是力求把原文的语用用意在译文中准确地表达出来,使译文读者能够获得与原文读者同样的效果。

“公司简介”常见语用失误和处理方法如下:2.1 语用语言失误针对该问题,译文侧重点(Text Emphasis)应以目标语(Target Language)为准,针对目标受众而组织翻译;在翻译聚焦点(Focus),以:读者(Reader (2nd person))即以顾客为中心,翻译出地道准确的英文。
(2) 译文违反英语的语言表达习惯。
这类语用失误产生的原因在于不懂得在特定的情景中,英语有相应的习惯表达方式,因而在翻译中不恰当地采用某种表达方式,或误用英语的其他表达方式,结果不能准确地表达原文的信息和用意,甚至引起误解。
例如: “一次性筷子”被译成“one time chopstick”,其实,这里的“一次性”是指用完之后就不在使用的意思。
因此,它的正确译文应是“disposable”而非“one time”。
这一点也应遵循译文侧重点和翻译聚焦点原则。
(3) 套用汉语语篇结构和表达方式。
这类语用失误产生的原因在于忽视英汉语篇结构和表达方式之间的差异,将汉语的语篇结构和表达方式迁移到英语中。
由于汉英两种语言的语用规则差异极大,有的甚至相悖,结果译文在表达方式和语篇结构上都不被英语读者理解和接受,造成语用失误。
在语篇特征上,中英公司简介存在着明显的差异。
中文公司简介的文体趋于夸张,常用笼统、抽象的套话,相比之下,英文公司简介文体平实,用语具体,重在提供信息。
如果把中文的语篇结构直接照搬到英语中,英文读者看了会觉得译文文体累赘,意思重复,甚至对其中夸张、溢美之辞产生反感,导致语用失误。
