A Letter of Sympathy
In today’s newspaper, I read about the severe flood in your hometown and I am writing to extend my deepest concerns.
It hurts to see all the pictures of destroyed homes and homeless people in the tragic flood. I couldn’t help shedding tears when I saw a little girl crying on the roof of her house and asking for help. I am especially worried about you, your family and all your friends there. I am crossing my fingers for you now in a hope that you are all safe and sound..
I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you, and I want to extend to you my sincere support. Our government and many nongovernmental organizations are initiating various campaigns to urge people to donate money and necessary materials to your hometown. I donated all my allowance that I have been saving for years.
I feel extremely sorry about this tragedy, and I am looking forward to hearing from you. Please pass my concern on to your parents.

My View on the Income Gap
Now the income gap is getting wider and wider. In some privately owned firms, joint-ventures, or foreign-funded companies, an executive’s yearly income can be ten times or even a hundred times as much as an ordinary worker’s.
Faced with this situation, people will undoubtedly have different opinions. Some believe that it benefits the social and economic development since driving force of growth is often derived from the gap. In other words, the gap inspires people and gives a push a advancement. Others speak of its side effect. Income gap is often the root of social unrest and also contrary to a socialist country’s principle.
From my point of view, while it is true that the income gap may stimulate social development to some extent, it causes trouble as well. An income gap that is too wide for most people to bear can neither contribute to the stability of a country nor promote its long-term economic development. Therefore, while we are pursuing a rapid development of our country, we should take some actions to resolve the problem of an increasingly wide income gap.

To Be a Qualified Global Citizen
With the growing trend of globalization, citizens all over the world are more like living in one extended family---the Earth. Family members---Easterners or Westerners, young or old, male or female---should contribute to its harmonious construction and development.
Basically, to be a qualified global citizen means to think and act on global terms. As the hope and backbone of the country, contemporary Chinese college students should always bear in mind issues of common concern, such as energy crisis, environment pollution, global warming, terrorism, etc. actions speak louder than words. Qualified global citizens will take action in their daily life: using recyclable materials, saving water, electricity and other natural resources, and respecting other people and their
values…
The slogan of the 29th Olympic Games held in Beijing says: “One world, one dream.”Only when we share responsibility, care about and collaborate with each other, can we realize our dream and live in harmony as global citizens.

School or Major
Recent years have witnessed a steady increase in the popularity of such majors as international finance, finance and accountancy, etc. In the meantime, whether to choose a good university or a good major has provoked a debate.
It is true that graduates from prestigious universities are more popular in labor markets, so many students would spare no efforts to be enrolled in good universities, which means standing on the threshold of a promising career after graduation. But even the best university has unpopular majors, thus graduates from these majors could encounter much difficulty in finding a job, let alone a good one, which means they would be out of work immediately after graduation.
What about a good major then? Maybe you are studying in a common university, but your major is of great competition, then do you still need to worry about your future? A good major can, to some extent, ensure your future success. If your major is exclusive to only several universities, you will surely be especially competitive in the real world. Do not merely focus on the name of a university---choosing a good major suitable to you is wiser.

The Teacher-Student Relationship
A good teacher-student relationship can effectively further students to a higher level in study. Teachers with patience and understanding encourage their students instead of pushing or forcing them forward. This sort of relationship makes learning so enjoyable and interesting that students would work hard willingly.
However, a bad relationship between teachers and students seriously weakens the achievement of teaching. It discourages students from learning, leaving them with a wrong and negative attitude towards study. Thus, teaching also becomes an unpleasant task, which forms a vicious circle.
Now that a good teacher-student relationship makes a teacher’s job worthwhile, while a bad one negatively affects a student’s development even to the rest of his life, more importance should be attached to the relationship between teachers and students. Model Test 6
Should Colleges Ban House Help
Nowadays, students in growing numbers are becoming house service companies’customers, which raises a hot discussion as to whether schools should ban house help. Those opposing school’s ban say hiring help to do cleaning, students can same time for more important things like study and social activities. However, some education experts point out, in a disagreeing tone, that colleges are where students learn to live independently and cultivate their work ethic. Hiring cleaning staff does not help.
I, myself, suggest college ban house help. Firstly, doing housework not only helps students live an independent life but also cultivates good living habits. Secondly, since
most students are not financially independent, it’s actually students’ parents who are paying for the house help service. Thirdly, with strangers coming in and out of the dorms, students and their personal belongings will be at risk. Lots of problems stemming from it will become dorm management personnel’s headache. Therefore, it’s better for schools to ban students from hiring house help. Cleaning dorms is part and parcel of campus life, which helps students grow up to be a mature and independent person.

Mobile Phone Uses Should Be Restricted in Library
The improper use of mobile phones is becoming increasingly serious in the library. Many students are found talking loudly on phones or taking a phone in audible ringing mode into the library.
There is no doubt that those poor manners have a negative impact on library users. For one thing, mobile phones are a distraction for those who use mobile phones, for they can hardly focus on reading. For another, such behavior causes disturbance to other library users. It’s very important for the users to maintain a quiet atmosphere since the library is a place for study and research.
All students should comply with library regulations and keep quiet in the library. If they do need to use mobile phones, they can set their mobile phones in silence mode and make phone calls in designated areas, such as restrooms, photocopier rooms and the elevator area.
It is firmly believed that restriction on mobile phone uses in the library helps to create an excellent atmosphere and does good to all library users.

A Letter to Parents
Dear mom and dad,
I’ve received your letter asking me whether I have landed a fob. I know you worry a lot about my job, but I’ve decided to start my own business after graduation.
It’s true that setting up my own business has its own risks, but I believe the risk is worth the rewards. First of all, I , b starting a new company, am creating jobs rather than wading into the job market and competing for the limited jobs there. Besides, it’s gratifying to create something from scratch. I’ll never get bored since every day there will be something new and challenging.
As you know, I’ve take business-related courses in college to learn how to start and run a business. And one year spent in IT industry as and intern helps me come up with something that perfectly fits into the local market. S to money, there industry banks that are willing to back sound business plans. I’m fully prepared for a start-up. So please give me your blessing. One day, my company may grow from a start-up to a multimillion-dollar corporation.
Take care and your good health is the biggest support to my career.
Yours dearest son,
Henry

My School Life
Two years has flied by before I know it. I, once a childish high-school boy, am now a junior college student. So many things have happened in the past two years that I hardly remember them all, but one of them still remains so fresh in my memory.
It was in my first year in college that I took part in an English Speech Contest. Being a top student and highest scholarship winner, I was so sure to win a prize in the contest. But disappointedly, I even didn’t pass the preliminary round. Adding to my distress was the impression that all my classmates were laughing at me and among among them was Henry who won the 3rd prize. Because of the failing experience, I decided not to enter for the contest in the second year. However, quite out of my expectation, Henry came to me and persuaded me to prepare for the coming contest with him. Moved by his sincerity, I worked hard in preparation for the contest and ended up winning the first prize and a best friend, Henry. The valuable experience teaches me that it’s not realistic to expect everything to always work in my favor. The setbacks and challenges are just as important for my growth as the good times.
As a junior, I still have two years to go. I hope the coming two years could help me learn to be independent and acquire precious knowledge, and prepare me for my professional career.

Caring for the Elderly
Aging is becoming a global issue, with the development of medical technology which makes it possible for people to live longer than in the past. And caring for the elderly has become a major concern for all who live in an aging society.
Then, what can we do for the aging population as college students? We may begin from taking care of our elderly relatives. Many of us may live in a family where parents are members of sandwich generation who care for senior citizens, who have a child at home and who, in many cases, must balance paid work and family life. It’s helpful if we can visit our aging grandparents on a regular basis, take them out for a walk and talk about the old days. What’s more, it is a good idea to fill our spare time working as volunteers to care for the elderly at nursing homes. Last but not least, we may join the effort with our knowledge in constructing an elderly caring system with the integration of families, communities, welfare institution and governments. Admittedly, caring for the elderly is a demanding task that can be time-consuming. However, the living condition of senior citizens shows a nation’s living standard and social morals. More importantly, living with the elderly and taking care of them is a rewarding experience.。
