ⅰobjectives of the study
as english major postgraduate students, language study should be our first consideration, especially at the perspective of cross-cultural communication. the purpose of my study is to offer some methodologies to overcome language shocks.
ⅱthe reasons of language shock when chinese students in westerns
1. different cultural background
hu wenzhong once said: “language and culture are closely interrelated for no language exits without culture and vice versa. the produce and heritage of culture rely on the development of its language and at the same time in order to catch up with the peace of the former, language is becoming more precise and exact. in the study of the world’s cultures, it has become obviously apparent that various groups not only have different languages, they also have variant world views that are reflected in their languages. so when chinese students go abroad, despite of their basically acquired western language skills, they may also conflict with language shock for lack of western cultural awareness of its numerous disparities with our own cultural background.
2. different pragmatic rules
only based on all these traditional rules they have learning during school days can not make sure the smooth of communication, a series of pragmatic rules should be taken into consideration in the specific use of a foreign language, including how to say hello to others, how to refuse others as well as how to farewell others and so on. when our chinese students go to abroad, although they had already received some formal language training of western world, language shock is still the problem that becomes the headache because of different pragmatic rules of these two countries.
3. different communication style
our chinese always like to express our feelings more euphemistically rather than directly. we view straight to the point as a rude manner and lack of consideration while western people prefer to explain their feelings immediately for they consider implication as a confusion and deficiency in sincerity. and furthermore, westerners always help others to complete their conversation to show their interest but our chinese take this action as interruption.
