"I just wanted to know if you're interested in selling your dog." "That worthless mutt?" The man pointed to a dog in the yard and laughed for a few seconds, then suddenly stopped. "I was just joking about the worthless part. He's a pretty good dog. Yeah. I might be interested." "Well, he's the kind of dog I'm looking for, and it doesn't look to me like you're too fond of him. He believed ignorance (无知) to be the enemy of freedom, and he wanted to correct what he considered to be the weaknesses of educational institutions (机构) modeled on European settings. He imagined that an "academical village" around a tree-lined lawn would provide an ideal setting in which to pursue higher education. The center of such a village would be a Temple of Knowledge that would house the university library. When Virginia decided to set up a state university in 1818, the retired U.S. President finally was able to devote his talent, time, and energy to creating this new kind of educational institution. By the time he was finished with his design, Jefferson had invented an entirely new American setting for higher education: the college campus. In 1812, Jefferson chose to begin building his "academical village," the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, VA, far away from the city center. He intended this spot to promote learning because it was natural and unspoiled, and far from anything that could distract or harm the students. The University consists of two rows of houses, five on each side, leading to a main building. This main building, the Rotunda, became the most important part of the University, because it contained the library. By focusing his entire institution on the library, instead of around the church, Jefferson revolutionized American universityarchitecture.Jefferson's aim was to create a new institutional form for his ideal educational system, a system he thought should give every citizen the information he needs for carrying out his daily business. This new approach to citizenship and education demanded a new type of university, one where students and professors could coexist and share ideas. He attempted to create this environment by combining the professors' houses and students' classrooms, and linking all the buildings with covered walkways so intellectual exchanges between departments could go on smoothly. Jefferson had also recognized the importance of the students' whole life, and given much thought and planning to the students' dining, living, and exercise facilities (设施).31. Jefferson devoted much of his thought to the education of the common man because he believed ________.A. everyone who loved freedom hated ignoranceB. a country could not be strong without educationC. an uneducated man could not gain full freedomD. European educational institutions did not suit America32. According to Jefferson, the center of a university should be _______.A. the churchB. the libraryC. the lawnD. the classrooms33. Jefferson chose to locate the University of Virginia far away from the city center because ________.A. land in the city center could not be foundB. there was a tree-lined lawn thereC. this was a European traditionD. there was no distraction for the students34. In Jefferson's view, an ideal educational system should ________.A. be one under which every citizen enjoys equal opportunityB. give everyone the information he needs for conducting his businessC. ensure that everyone has a chance to enter an institution of higher learningD. provide students with a natural and unspoiled setting for learning35. What was made easy by the revolutionized American campus?A. Students' learning.B. Intellectual exchange.C. Professors' teaching.D. Both students' and professors' life.Test Yourself1Passage ThreeThe good news we get from TV and radio makes us feel more kindly toward other people, but bad news — especially news of cruelty and violence —stirs up suspicion and a sense of competition toward others. These are the findings of 10 years of experiments by research psychologists (心理学家) at Columbia University, who conclude that broadcasters encourage hostile (敌对的) behavior by stressing bad news."We found that the news people are exposed to either encourages them to concentrate on the differences between themselves and others, or on the common problems that make them feel,'We're all in this together,' " explained Dr. Harvey Hornstein."'News about one human being helping another … brings out feelings of trust and cooperation. But news about one person actually doing harm to another changes our estimate of other people for the worse."”In an early experiment in 1968, Dr. Hornstein and his associates, who had been dropping wallets (钱包) for two years to test the honesty of people, discovered that on June 4, 1968, not one wallet was returned."That was the night Robert F. Kennedy was shot," he recalled. "Strangers suddenly seemed dangerous, and nobody wanted to return a lost wallet to a stranger.""But good news on the other hand, lifts us up," he stressed, citing th e date of July 4, 1976, America’s Bicentennial (两百年的) celebration. "On that day, we all felt safe and good. Being American was the thing. We all felt as if we all belonged together."Recent tests support these conclusions. In one experiment, 60 subjects were exposed to good news, bad news or music. Then they were told to play a game with a non-existent person supposedly in another room. It was a game of choice that emphasized cooperation or competition. After hearing good news, the overwhelming majority, 91 percent, played cooperatively. But after hearing bad news, competitive responses were over three times as high — up to 28 percent, from 9 percent."If we watch television and see a lot of blood," said Dr. Hornstein, "we’re probably assuming that the world is a dirtier place than we assumed before we saw that TV violence. And we’ll deal with the next individual we come up on as if he is part of that grim (冷酷的) picture of humanity. After the good news,it’s the reverse."36. According to the findings of researchers at Columbia University, when people hear good news, they feel _______.A. happierB. more kindly toward othersC. safer than they really areD. more competitive37. Dr. Harvey Hornstein found that when people hear news about one person actually doing harm to another, they tend to _______.A. regard other people as worse than they really areB. treat total strangers as suspects of cruel crimesC. become hostile towards neighbors and friendsD. think about the common problems facing mankind38. What did Dr. Harvey Hornstein and his associates discover on the night of June 4, 1968?A. Robert F. Kennedy was shot.B. Their wallets were lost.C. People in America suddenly became dishonest.D. Nobody returned the wallets they dropped.39. We can infer from the passage that on July 4, 1976, most probably _______.A. people drank and sang and dancedB. lost wallets were returned to their ownersC. everybody wanted to be AmericanD. even criminals were friendly to others40. We can conclude from the passage that _______.A. violence on TV leads to more violence on the streetsB. broadcasters should emphasize good news rather than bad newsC. the world is a dirtier place than we assume it to beD. people are more competitive when they are faced with challengesKaleil Isaza Tuzman moved to the United States from Columbia when he was 15. Within a few years he was pushing to get ahead, hawking (叫卖) baseball caps to pay the bills his Harvard scholarship didn't cover. After graduating, he landed on Wall Street, but every night he dreamed of working for himself. During the booming (繁荣的) 1990s, he gave it a try when he and a partner started govWorks - a software company that helped city government go online. They raised $60 million and expanded like crazy. Then dotcoms started turning into dotbombs - govWorks broke up too. Says Isaza Tuzman, "Entrepreneurs (创业人) have to be ready for both success and failure. In Columbia if you fail, you become a pariah and no one will do business with you. The wonderful thing about this country is you can get up again."From national parks to moon landings, America has given the world some amazing ideas. But the American Dream is still the biggest - the idea that with hard work and a bit of luck you can be whoever you want to be. Historian James Truslow Adams once wrote that Americans believe "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement."These days there's pressure on the dream idea. A 1978 study of boys born and raised after World War II found an astonishing 23% of the poorest had reached the top of the income heap by 1973. Now, in a typical generation, only 10% work their way from bottom to top.But every day, some still do make it. After govWorks wentbankrupt, Isaza Tuzman built on what he had learned. His new company, Recognition Group, restructures (重组) firms and finds them venture capital –nearly $150 million so far. Last year, "Hispanic Business" magazine named him to its 100 Most Influential list. Not bad for a dreamer, in a country built on dreams.41. Reading Comprehension (24%)Passage 1Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boy to meet girl.Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars introducing eligible marriage partners to each other, but parents also play a part in the ritual by which young Koreans meet.In Confucian Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred rite, the scene of the initial meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage and keeping the bloodlines pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters.Often, the girl will work out a system of discreet signals with her mother, where her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders an orange juice it might signal that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a coffee indicates she wants them to stay.Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introductions being done by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man or woman in the country who has not gone through this process ——sometimes six or seven times.1. Some people even have to go through the matchmaking for more than one time.Passage 2Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is for life.In some modern countries, it has been fashionable to think that by free education for all whether rich or poor, clever or stupid one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees, they refuse to do what they think “low” work. In fact, work with hands is thought to be d irty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we would die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and moved the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns. In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.6. The author of this passage thinks that _________.A. education can settle all of the world’s problemsB. free education won't help to solve social problemsC. free education for all probably leads to a perfect worldD. all the social problems can’t be solved by education7. The author wants to prove that_________.A. our society needs all kinds of jobsB. our society needs free education for allC. a farmer is more important than a professorD. people with university degrees refuse to do what they think “low” work8. One can learn from the passage ______A. work with hands is dirty and shamefulB. work with hands is low workC. work with hands is the most importantD. we can’t regard work with hands as low work9. The purpose of education is_________.A. to choose the system of educationB. to prepare children mainly for their future workC. to build a perfect worldD. to let everyone receive education fit for him10. The passage mainly tells us about _______ of education.A. the meansB. the systemC. the valueD. the typePassage 3When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighborhood ---- all of them too young to walk ---- and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano, she began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighborhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very lucrative (利润丰厚的) occupation. My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lesson did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes, I asked him why, and when he replied “Because it is beautiful,” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not stifled. I believed that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and depriving them of any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.11. According to the narrator, she owed her success in art to ___________.A. the good education her parents gave herB. the support of her understanding and adventurous motherC. her inborn talentD. her ballet teacher12. The central idea of the passage is that __________.A. parents should try to discover the natural gift in their children and help to develop it while they are youngB. the so-called good education parents give their children only drives them into the commonplace and deprives them of any chance of doing anything originalC. mothers should be heroic and adventurousD. ballet is no good as a form of dancePart V. Test Yourself2Passage OneIn 1665, an apple fell from a tree and landed near young Isaac Newton. Untold numbers of people had seen apples fall and hadn’t given the matter a second thought. But Newton thought about it carefully and developed a cornerstone of modern science—the theory of gravity. The ability to ask deep questions and look for answers lies at the heart of science. So it stands to reason that educators would want to bottle Newton’s brand of thinking and serve it to their students.Common sense might argue that the best means to that end is to cram future scientists with chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics. After all, Newton had an enormous appetite(胃口;兴趣) for science. But Newton owned more books in the humanities(文科) than he did in the sciences, and his interest included subjects such an history, philosophy, and Greek mythology.Could it be that thinking deeply about subjects such as history, philosophy, and religion makes one a better scientist? Many top American schools think so.The liberal arts education is a diversified(多样化的) toolbox. If you have only one way of looking at things, you will get stuck in the same place everybody else got stuck. If you’ve got different experiences, you may find other ways of solving the problem.”It’s well known that the more we think, the better our neural(神经的) connections. But liberal arts colleges go one step further. They argue that learning to think in one field may sharpen the ability to solve complex problems in a seemingly unrelated area. It may be a while before scientists establish the truth or falsity of this idea. In the meantime, some of the best minds in science are betting that it’s true.“Learning about the gre at books and the humanities can stimulate the sort of brain waves that serve a scientist pretty well,” says Nobel Prize winner Tom Cech “The more types of thinking you have to do, the more skills you can bring to a scientific problem."26. We learn from the first paragraph that ________.A. the ability to think is of first importance to scientific discoveryB. nobody noticed apples falling from trees to the ground before NewtonC. Newton developed the theory of gravity by watching a falling appleD. modern science is related to the falling of an apple to the ground27. According to the passage, to help students become scientists, educators________.A. should cram them with lots of science coursesB. should make them think in the way Newton didC. should ask them deep questions and look for answersD. should give them an enormous appetite for science28. We learn from the passage that students who study science in a liberal arts college ________.A. are required to take a number of courses in the humanitiesB. are free to take whatever courses they like bestC. have a wide range of interests in history, philosophy and religionD. spend more time studying arts and the humanities than the sciences29. The idea that learning to think in one field may sharpen the ability to solve complex problems in a seemingly unrelated area is ________.A. already proved to be true by scientistsB. accepted by the best people in scienceC. a common belief among liberal arts collegesD. gaining worldwide acceptance30. In liberal arts colleges students are _______.A. asked to bring a diversified toolbox to schoolB. trained to think differently from everybody elseC. required to learn different kinds of skillsD. taught to look at things in different waysTest Yourself2Passage TwoFresh out of residency, I took a job in a small community hospital’s emergency department. As the newest member of the group, I got last dibs on shifts. No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift went to me. I kiss my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. At 9 pm, the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. I did my best and he hung in there. Eventually we were able to move him out of the emergency room and into the intensive care unit. Before I left in the morning to spend Christmas with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still touch-and-go, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.Emergency physicians don’t have continuing relationships with patients like other doctors. We get the suddenly sick. Often they are frightened. Sometimes they are angry at us just because we were there. They pass through our hands and out the door. We rarely see them again. I thought no more about my heart patient. The following year, still the newest member of the group, I got Christmas Eve duty again and dragged myself off to work. At 9 pm sharp, the hospital clerk told me there was a couple in the hall who wanted to speak to me.When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr. Lee and said, “You probably don’t remember me but last Christmas you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me.” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left. I was more than a surprised — and touched. The following year a new doctor had joined the group, and my family was delighted that I could stay home Christmas Eve. But I wanted to see if Mr. and Mrs. Lee would return. This time I volunteered for the shift.I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm, the Lees appeared, carry their new grandchild. We all embraced, and Mr. Lee said he’d come see me every Christmas Eve.I worked the emergency department for the next ten Christmas Eves. Each year at exactly 9 pm, he’d appear, twice with new grandchildren. One year he came with a great-grandchild.The last year I saw him, he brought me a gift. It was a golden bell engraved with a single word : Friendship.Mr. Lee died the next year. Now my family, friends and I ring that bell every Christmas Eve at exactly 9 pm and offer a toast to the man who didn’t forget.31. Why did the author work on Christmas Eve when he first took a job in a small community hospital?A. He was used to spending the night in hospital.B. He had no choice on matters of shifts.C. He wanted to accumulate experience.D. He had just completed his residency.32. What did the doctor do during his shift in the emergency department?A. He set up an intensive care unit.B. On the following Christmas Eve the doctor________.A. knew his patient would come to see himB. was rather reluctant to take the shiftC. saved the life of a patientD. was delighted to be able to stay at home34. What did Mr. Lee do the last year the doctor saw him?A. He brought his great grandchild to see the doctor.B. He gave a golden bell to the doctor as a gift.C. He promised to see the doctor every Christmas.D. He said he'd never forget the doctor's friendship.35. What's the author's purpose in writing this passage?A. To tell the world how hard an emergency physician's life can be.B. To express a doctor's wish to build up personal friendships with his patients.C. To show the satisfaction he draws from working in an emergency department.D. To prove that lasting relationships are possible between physicians and patients.Test Yourself2Passage ThreeHow do young children learn to have good values How can parents teach their children about the importance of kindness, patience, and self-discipline At a time when more and more parents worry about the negative and violent images (暴力形象) their children see on TV, in the movies and, on the Internet, some are turning to fairy tales (童话) as a way to teach their young ones how to behave in society.Fairy tales were not always intended for children. We know this because some of these stories have existed for hundreds of years and were passed down from generation to generation through songs and drama. They were considered entertainment for everyone, not only for young people. In these ancient stories, the heroes were extremely clever, fiercely independent, and never gave up. Over the years, some of the heroes' qualities and story lines have been changed to fit the times.Psychologists think that fairy tales have a positive influence on children because they present the two sides of good and evil very clearly. When children hear the stories, they develop sympathetic feelings for the heroic characters. In each tale, they can see that there are many different kinds of people in the world and that we all have a choice about what kind of person we want to be. We can choose to do good actions, rather than bad ones, in our lives. What kind of values can children learn from fairy tales In "The Princess and the Pea," a poorly dressed girl who insists she is a princess is given a difficult test by the Queen. When she passes the test, we learn that she is rewarded because she stayed true to herself. In "The Little Mermaid," the mermaid (美人鱼) who lives under the sea longs to be with the humans on land. Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures. In "Pinocchio," a wooden puppet (木偶) turns into a boy when he finally learns how to tell the truth.Teaching values is the reason most often given for teaching literature and encouraging reading. These old stories can indeed teach us lessons about human relationships that are universal (普遍的) enough to survive throughout the centuries. This might be the reason why they have been around for so long and are unlikely to disappear any time soon.36. What do we learn about fairy tales from the passage?A. They are written solely for children.B. They teach universal lessons about human relationships.C. They are all passed down through songs and drama.D. They are adapted to TV and movies as entertainment.37. Why do fairy tales have a positive influence on children?A. Good and evil are presented in a way they can easily understand.B. The characters are all good examples for them to follow.C. The heroes go through all kinds of hardships but never give up.D. There are many different kinds of characters for them to imitate.38. Some of the heroes' qualities in fairy tales have been changed over the years________.A. to reflect the change of valuesB. to suit the tastes of different peopleC. to arouse the interest of little childrenD. to adapt to the change of the times39. Children who have heard about the story of the little mermaid might ________.A. learn to be better self-disciplinedB. be more likely to tell the truth than to tell liesC. learn to stay true to themselves all their livesD. be better able to accept foreign cultures40. Parents encourage children to read fairy tales so that they ________.A. can entertain themselves without bothering othersB. can get to know great literature of the worldC. can stay away from violence shown on TVD. can learn how to behave in societyTest Yourself2Passage FourWe'd gone up to the city, my husband and I, to see a friend of his from college. He was doing well for himself now, a businessman living in a high-class apartment on the Magnificent Mile. It was a treat for us to get away like this, on the rare occasions we could get a baby-sitter.He met us at the parking garage (停车库) he'd recommended (推荐) and offered to pay for. "City life's great," he'd said, "except for finding a parking space." There was the slap on the back for my husband, and a kiss on the cheek for me. Then he led us out to the street for the two-block walk to his apartment. The North Side reminded me of a refined street festival that summer night – crowds of people, somehow looking well-dressed even in jeans, strolling up and down the sidewalks, stopping in at the dozens of restaurants. We were walking three abreast (并肩) down the sidewalk. I was on the inside, closest to the buildings, and I saw him out of the corner of my eye.He was old, sitting on the doorstep of a store already locked for the night. He was bundled up in a dirty jacket that looked way too heavy for summer. Every few seconds, he called out to the passing people. "Got a quarter?" "Can you spare some change?"We'd seen people like him before, of course. We'd learned not to look them in the eye, to close our ears, to walk on by. Usually they expected to be ignored. Some of them tried to make you feel guilty (内疚), though, by telling you they needed money to feed their kids.So I steeled myself as we approached him. "Got any loose change you can spare?" he piped up."Get lost!" our friend shouted, looking straight ahead. As we brushed by, I got a look at him. Gray hair; a creased (有皱痕的), worn face that, inexplicably (无法解释地), had a toothless smile on it.Then we were past him, not missing a step in our steady stride. "I get so sick of these guys leeching off of you," our friend grumbled under his breath.I slowed down, my steps faltering (犹豫). I had some change in my pocket. I could get it out, run back, drop it into the old man's hand, and catch up with the guys before they even knew I was gone. Or I could just tell them, "I'll be right back, guys; wait for me a second," and go back at my leisure. But then I'd have to listen to the lecture about being too soft-hearted and handing out money to any guy with a sob story to tell.41. We learn from the first paragraph that the author and her husband ________.A. often went up to the city to visit their friendsB. rarely had time to go outC. lived far away from the city centerD. were doing very well financially42. A common complaint among people in the city is ________.A. it's very difficult to find a parking spaceB. there are too many beggars in the eveningC. it's too noisy wherever you goD. there is too much traffic during the day43. How do most people behave when they meet beggars on the street?A. They stop to give them a look.B. They fish out some small change.C. They pretend not to see them.D. They hurry past them.44. What did the author's friend mean when he said "Get lost!" to the beggar?A. He lost his way.B. He didn't have money.C. He was sick.D. He was annoyed.45. What can be inferred about the author from the passage?A. She was often criticized by her husband for being soft-hearted.B. She'd have given the old man some change if she'd been alone.C. She used to hand out money to anyone with a sad story to tell.D. She was jealous of her husband's friend for his high living style.。

A. able B. unable C. correct D. incorrectPassage OneIn 1665, an apple fell from a tree and landed near young Isaac Newton. If you’ve got different experiences, you may find other ways of solving the problem.”It’s well known that the more we think, the bette r our neural(神经的) connections. But liberal artscolleges go one step further. They argue that learning to think in one field may sharpen the ability to solve complex problems in a seemingly unrelated area. It may be a while before scientists establish the truth or falsity of this idea. In the meantime, some of the best minds in science are betting that it’s true.“Learning about the great books and the humanities can stimulate the sort of brain waves that serve a scientist pretty well,” says Nobel Prize winner Tom Cech “The more types of thinking you have to do, the more skills you can bring to a scientific problem."36. We learn from the first paragraph that ________.A. the ability to think is of first importance to scientific discoveryB. nobody noticed apples falling from trees to the ground before NewtonC. Newton developed the theory of gravity by watching a falling appleD. modern science is related to the falling of an apple to the ground37. According to the passage, to help students become scientists, educators________.A. should cram them with lots of science coursesB. should make them think in the way Newton didC. should ask them deep questions and look for answersD. should give them an enormous appetite for science38. We learn from the passage that students who study science in a liberal arts college ________.A. are required to take a number of courses in the humanitiesB. are free to take whatever courses they like bestC. have a wide range of interests in history, philosophy and religionD. spend more time studying arts and the humanities than the sciences39. The idea that learning to think in one field may sharpen the ability to solve complex problems in a seemingly unrelated area is ________.A. already proved to be true by scientistsB. accepted by the best people in scienceC. a common belief among liberal arts collegesD. gaining worldwide acceptance40. In liberal arts colleges students are _______.A. asked to bring a diversified toolbox to schoolB. trained to think differently from everybody elseC. required to learn different kinds of skillsD. taught to look at things in different waysPassage TwoFresh out of residency, I took a job in a small community hospital’s emergency department. Lee and said, “You probably don’t remember me but last Christmas you s aved my life. Now my family, friends and I ring that bell every Christmas Eve at exactly 9 pm and offer a toast to the man who didn’t forget.41. Why did the author work on Christmas Eve when he first took a job in a small community hospital?A. He was used to spending the night in hospital.B. He had no choice on matters of shifts.C. He wanted to accumulate experience.D. He had just completed his residency.42. What did the doctor do during his shift in the emergency department?A. He set up an intensive care unit.B. He built up a lasting relationship with his patient.C. He moved his patient out of the emergency room.D. He pulled a patient through a heart attack.43. On the following Christmas Eve the doctor________.A. knew his patient would come to see himB. was rather reluctant to take the shiftC. saved the life of a patientD. was delighted to be able to stay at home44. What did Mr. Lee do the last year the doctor saw him?A. He brought his great grandchild to see the doctor.B. He gave a golden bell to the doctor as a gift.C. He promised to see the doctor every Christmas.D. He said he'd never forget the doctor's friendship.45. What's the author's purpose in writing this passage?A. "Now tell me what the hell you want." He stared at Laura for a few seconds, and then grinned, "Maybe you'd like to come inside and warm up."No. No, I don't want to come in." She took a deep breath. "I just wanted to know if you're interested in selling your dog.""That worthless mutt?" The man pointed to a dog in the yard and laughed for a few seconds, then suddenly stopped. "I was just joking about the worthless part. He's a pretty good dog. Yeah. I might be interested.""Well, he's the kind of dog I'm looking for, and it doesn't look to me like you're too fond of him. I mean he' s tied up outside. I don't see any food or water.""You just wait a minute. I take good care of that dog. The guy I got him from said he was a trained guard dog. Trouble is the stupid thing doesn't even bark when strangers come around. But then I guess that wouldn't matter to you. You' re probably just looking for a pet, huh?""Yeah, well here's your chance to get rid of him.I'll give you twenty dollars."He snorted(哼着鼻子说) . "You expect me to sell a purebred guard dog for twenty dollars? Fifty dollars. That' s my price. You bring me fifty dollars, honey, and you got yourself a dog." The man smiled. "Sure you don't want to come in?"Laura shook her head. "I'll be back with the money." Breakfast forgotten, she searched for and found a cash machine four blocks away. I can't afford this, she thought as she punched the numbers into the machine. The dog will need a vet(兽医) and where am I going to get the money for that? Her fears faded(消退) as she pictured the dog, curled up, not outside on the cold, hard ground, but in front of a glowing fireplace.Blue ceramic bowls filled with food and water sat in the corner of the kitchen, and she saw him, head held high, matching her stride on their daily walk. With the money in her purse she hurried back to the man's house.46. She's got the money in her purse to pay for the pet she desiredPassage FourAlthough Thomas Jefferson did not begin the effort of designing the University of Virginia until late in his life, the education of the common man had occupied his thoughts for decades. By focusing his entire institution on the library, instead of around the church, Jefferson revolutionized American university architecture.Jefferson's aim was to create a new institutional form for his ideal educational system, a system he thought should give every citizen the information he needs for carrying out his daily business. This new approach to citizenship and education demanded a new type of university, one where students and professors could coexist and share ideas. He attempted to create this environment by combining the professors' houses and students' classrooms, and linking all the buildings with covered walkways so intellectual exchanges between departments could go on smoothly. Jefferson had also recognized the importance of the students' whole life, and given much thought and planning to the students' dining, living, and exercise facilities (设施).51. Jefferson devoted much of his thought to the education of the common man because he believed ________.A. everyone who loved freedom hated ignoranceB. a country could not be strong without educationC. an uneducated man could not gain full freedomD. European educational institutions did not suit America52. According to Jefferson, the center of a university should be _______.A. the churchB. the libraryC. the lawnD. the classrooms53. Jefferson chose to locate the University of Virginia far away from the city center because ________.A. land in the city center could not be foundB. there was a tree-lined lawn thereC. this was a European traditionD. there was no distraction for the students54. In Jefferson's view, an ideal educational system should ________.A. be one under which every citizen enjoys equal opportunityB. give everyone the information he needs for conducting his businessC. ensure that everyone has a chance to enter an institution of higher learningD. provide students with a natural and unspoiled setting for learning55. What was made easy by the revolutionized American campus?A. Students' learning.B. Intellectual exchange.C. Professors' teaching.D. Both students' and professors' life.Part IV Translation 10%Directions:Turn the following sentences into English56、小约翰尼一见到妈妈下班回来就往前门跑去。

But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man or woman in the country who has not gone through this process ——sometimes six or seven times.年级、专业: 层次: 学习形式: 姓名: 学号:装 订 线密 封 线1. In fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. The author of this passage thinks that _________.A. education can settle all of the w orld’s problemsB. free education won't help to solve social problemsC. free education for all probably leads to a perfect worldD. all the social problems can’t be solved by education7. The author wants to prove that_________.A. our society needs all kinds of jobsB. our society needs free education for allC. a farmer is more important than a professorD. p eople with university degrees refuse to do what they think “low” work8. Cobra Cobras, found in some parts of Africa and Asia, are poisonous snakes. Most cobras bite their victims and their bite may cause death within a few hours. The king cobra, the largest of all poisonous snakes, may reach a length of 18 ft (5.5 m) and feeds chiefly on other snakes. When disturbed, it raises its hooded head to get a better view or to strike. Large individuals may raise themselves to a height of about 1 m (about 4 ft). The Indian cobra is usually 4-5 ft (1.2–1.6 m) long. The snake’s color ranges from yellowish to dark brown. It has a mark like a pair of spectacles on the back of its hood. It preys on rats and is therefore often found in houses. The Indian cobra and the Egyptian cobra are often displayed by snake charmers. The cobras appear to respond to the music played by the charmer, but, like all snakes, they are deaf and only follow the movements of the charmer.

And to pay my own way, I played the guitar and sang at a local nightclub.”While Fields was still in his senior year, an executive of a record company came into the club as he was singing one of his own songs. The executive liked what he heard and signed the young man to a contract.Since graduating from Stanton College in 1973, Fields has devoted his full time to composing and singing. Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are 3 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky. If you say to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but …” what follows that “but” can render the apology ineffective: “I had a bad day” or “your noise was giving me a headache ” leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology.Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I’m sorry you’re upset”; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done. Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. Saying “I’m useless as a parent” does not commit a person to any specific improvement. These pseudo-apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not resort to these pseudo-apologies.But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition, children still need help to become aware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoilingother children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that raiding the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing a parent’s clothes without permission is not.46. If a mother adds “but” to an apology, _______.A) she doesn’t feel that she should have apologizedB) she does not realize that the child has been hurtC) the child may find the apology easier to acceptD) the child may feel that he owes her an apology47. According to the author, saying “I’m sorry you’re upset” most probably means “_______”.A) You have good reason to get upsetB) I’m aware you’re upset, but I’m not to blameC) I apologize for hurting your feelingsD) I’m at fault for making you upset48. He believed ignorance to be the enemy of freedom, and he wanted to correct what he considered to be the weakness of educational institutions modeled on European settings. He imagined that an “academical village” around a tree-lined lawn would provide an ideal setting in which to pursue higher education. The center of such a village would be a Temple of Knowledge that would house the university library. When Virginia decided to set up a state university in 1818, the retired U. S. President finally was able to devote his talent, time, and energy to creating this new kind of educational institution. By the time he was finished with his design, Jefferson had invented an entirely new American setting for higher education: the college campus. In 1812, Jefferson chose to begin building his “academical village,” the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, V A, far away from the city center. He intended this spot to promote learning because it was natural and unspoiled, and far from anything that could distract or harm the students. The University consists of two rows of houses, five on each side, leading to a main building. This main building, the Rotunda, became the most important part of the University, because it contained the library. By focusing his entire institution on the library, instead of around the church, Jefferson revolutionized American university architecture.Jefferson’s aim was to create a new institutional form for his ideal educational system, a system he thought should give every citizen the information he needs for carrying out his daily business. This new approach to citizenship and education demanded a new type of university, one where students and professors could coexist and share ideas. He attempted to create this environment by combing the professors’ houses and students’ classrooms, and linking all the buildings with covered walkways so intellectual exchanges between departments could go on smoothly. Jefferson had also recognized the importance of the students’ whole life, and given much thought and planning to the students’ dining, living, and exercise facilities.56. In fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries.
