The sound of the bell can not be heard when the ears are covered.” He immediatelygot some odd bits of cloth, made two rolls with them, and had his ears plugged with the two clothrolls. He thought that in this way nobody could hear the sound of the bell. Feeling relieved, hebegan striking the bell, one blow after another. 掩耳盗铃英语故事
掩耳盗铃英语故事The story of "The Thief of Bell" is a famous fable that has been passed down through generations. It is a cautionary tale that teaches us about the consequences of ignoring the truth and deceiving ourselves. The story goes like this:Once upon a time, in a small village, there was a clever thief who was known for his cunning ways. One day, he came up with a plan to steal the large brass bell from the village temple. He knew that the bell was a valuable treasure and he was determined to have it for himself. So, he devised a plan to steal the bell under the cover of darkness.Late one night, the thief snuck into the temple and carefully removed the bell from its mount. As he made his way out of the temple, he suddenly heard the sound of approaching footsteps. Fearing that he would be caught, the thief quickly hid the bell under his cloak and pressed it tightly against his ear to muffle the sound. In his panic, he failed to realize that the bell was so large and heavy that it could not possibly fit under his cloak. The thief's attempt to deceive himself and ignore the truth led to his downfall. The weight of the bell caused him to stumble and fall, and the noise of the bell ringing gave away his location. The villagers quickly caught the thief and he was brought to justice for his crime. The moral of the story is clear: trying to deceive oneself and ignore the truth will only lead to trouble. The thief's attempt to cover his ears and steal the bell only resulted in his own downfall. Just like the thief in the story, we must always be honest with ourselves and face the truth, no matter how difficult it may be.This timeless fable serves as a reminder to always be truthful and to face the consequences of our actions. It teaches us that there are no shortcuts in life and that trying to deceive ourselves will only lead to trouble. The story of "The Thief of Bell" is a powerful lesson that we can all learn from, and its message will continue to resonate for generations to come.。

Plug one’s ears while stealing a bellthe Spring and Autumn period (chūn qiū春秋时期,770-476 BC), a thief had stolen a bell and intended to carry it away on his back, but the bell was too bulky and heavy to be carried, so he tried to break it into pieces with a hammer to make it easier for carrying. On his first hit, however, the bell made a loud noise. He thus feared that the ringing sound might be heard by someone, who would come to rob him of his bell. His fright made him plug his own ears, while hitting the bell withthe hammer. The bell sound was, nevertheless, audible to others and therefore to stuff his ears for the purpose of stealing a bell was a stupid action it is as foolish as burying one’s head in the sand.。

Ostrich Logic (Yan Er Dao Ling)
At the time when Fan, a nobleman of the state of Jin, became a fugitive, a commoner found a bell and wanted to carry it off on his back. But the bell was too big for him. When he tried to knock it into pieces with a hammer there was a loud clanging sound. He was afraid that someone will hear the noise and take the bell from him, so he immediately stopped his own ears.
To worry about other people hearing the noise is understandable, but to worry about himself hearing the noise (as if stopping his own ears would prevent other people from hearing) is absurd.

于是就放手砸起钟来,一下一下,钟声响亮地传到很远的地方。
