Dr. Miller, Professor of Sociology at Washington University, has written numerous articles and books on the issues facing older Americans in our graying society for the past 15 years. Dr. Miller:Dr. Miller: Thank you for that introduction. Today, Id like to preface my remarks with a story from my own life which I feel highlights the common concerns that bring us here together. Several years ago when my grandparents were well into their eighties, they were faced with the reality of no longer being able to adequately care for themselves. My grandfather spoke of his greatest fear, that of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. Fighting back the tears, he spoke proudly of the fact that he had built their home from the ground up, and that he had pounded every nail and laid every brick in the process. The prospect of having to sell their home and give up their independence, and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. It was,in my grandfathers own words, like having a limb cut off. He exclaimed in a forceful manner that he felt he wasnt important anymore. For them and some older Americans, their so-called “golden years”are at times not so pleasant, for this period can mean the decline of not only ones health but the loss of identity and self-worth. In many societies, this self-identity is closely related with our social status, occupation, material possessions, or independence. Furthermore, we often live in societies that value what is “new” or in fashion, and our own usage of words in the English language is often a sign of bad news for older Americans. I mean how would your family react if you came home tonight exclaiming, “Hey, come to the living room and see the OLD black and white TV I brought!” Unfortunately, the word “old” calls to mind images of the need to replace or discard. Now, many of the lectures given at this conference have focused on the issues of pension reform, medical care, and the development of public facilities for senior citizens. And while these are vital issues that must be addressed, Id like to focus my comments on an important issue that will affect the overall success of the other programs mentioned. This has to do with changing our perspectives on what it means to be a part of this group, and finding meaningful roles the elderly can play and should play in our societies.First of all, Id like to talk about . . .16. What does the introduction say about Dr. Howard Millers articles and books?17. What is the greatest fear of Dr. Millers grandfather?18. What does Dr. Miller say the “golden years” can often mean?19. What is the focus of Dr. Millers speech?

Here is a 700-word article on the 2023 CET (College English Test) exam in English:The 2023 College English Test: Assessing Language Proficiency for the Future。

As the academic year draws to a close, university students across China eagerly await the results of the College English Test (CET), a nationwide standardized exam that has become a crucial milestone in their educational journey. The CET, which is administered twice annually, serves as a benchmark for evaluating the English language proficiency of undergraduate students, providing them with a valuable credential that can open doors to future opportunities. The 2023 CET, scheduled to take place in June and December, will once again challenge students to demonstrate their mastery of the English language across a range of skills, including reading comprehension, listening, writing, and speaking. The exam, which is divided into two levels CET-4 and CET-6 is designed to assess the students' ability to effectively communicate in English, a crucial asset in today's globalized world. The CET-4 exam, targeted at second-year undergraduate students, tests a broad range of language skills, including the ability to understand and interpret written and spoken English, as well as the capacity to express oneself coherently and accurately in both written and oral forms. The CET-6 exam, on the other hand, is geared towards third-year and fourth-year students, and delves deeper into the students' advanced language proficiency, requiring them to engage with more complex texts and tasks. One of the key aspects of the 2023 CET that has garnered significant attention is the emphasis on practical language application. In recent years, the exam has shifted its focus from purely theoretical knowledge to a more holistic assessment of the students' ability to use English in real-world scenarios. This shift reflects the growing demand for graduates who not only possess a strong command of the language but can also effectively apply their skills in professional and personal settings. To prepare for the 2023 CET, students are encouraged to adopt a multi-faceted approach that combines rigorous study of grammar, vocabulary, and language structures with regular practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Many universities have implemented comprehensive language training programs, offering a range of resources and support to help students hone their English proficiency.Beyond the classroom, students can also take advantage of various extracurricular activities and language immersion opportunities to further enhance their language skills. Participation in English-language clubs, debate teams, and international exchange programs can provide valuable exposure to authentic language use and cultural exchange, ultimately strengthening the students' overall language competence. As the 2023 CET approaches, students across China are rising to the challenge, driven by the recognition that strong English language proficiency is not only a valuable asset in their academic pursuits but also a crucial skill in the increasingly globalized job market. Employers, both domestic and international, have come to highly value the CET certification, as it serves as a reliable indicator of an individual's language abilities and their potential to thrive in cross-cultural environments. In conclusion, the 2023 College English Test represents a pivotal moment in the academic and professional lives of university students in China. By demonstrating their mastery of the English language, these students are positioning themselves for success, not only in their immediate educational goals but also in their future endeavors, whether they choose to pursue further studies, enter the workforce, or venture into the global arena. As the exam approaches, the anticipation and determination of these students serve as a testament to the enduring importance of language proficiency in shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.。

The participants were given a series of cognitive tests, including memory tests, attention tests, and problem - solving tests. The results of the study showed that the bilingual participants performed better on all of the tests than the monolingual participants. The researchers believe that this is because bilingual people have toconstantly switch between two languages, which exercises their brains and improves their cognitive abilities. In addition, the study also found that the earlier a person learns a second language, the better their cognitive abilities will be. This is because the brain is more flexible when a person is young, and it is easier for it to adapt to new languages.40. What is the main finding of the new study? (A)A) Bilingual people have better cognitive abilities.B) Monolingual people have better cognitive abilities.C) Learning a second language is difficult.D) The brain is more flexible when young.41. With ride - sharing services like Uber and Lyft, people can easily find a ride by using their smartphones. This not only saves time but also reduces the need for private cars, which can help to ease traffic congestion and reduce air pollution.Another example is home - sharing. This can provide travelers with more affordable accommodation options and also allow homeowners to earn extra income. However, the sharing economy also faces some challenges. One of the main challenges is regulation. Since the sharing economy is a relatively new model, there are currently no clear regulations in many areas. This can lead to issues such as safety concerns and unfair competition. Another challenge is trust.
