新世纪大学英语综合教程4完形填空答案及原文
Close1 Man has a blood tie with nature and nobody can live outside nature. Nature providesus with we need: the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat.For quite a long time after man began to live in the realm of nature, he lived in fear of its destructive forces. he used to regard nature with its elemental forces as something hostile to him. And even the forest was something wild and frightening to him. very often ,he was unable to obtain the merest daily necessities though he worked together with others stubbornly and collectively with his imperfect tools , through his interaction with nature , man changed it gradually . he cut down forest , cultivated land ,transferred various species of plants and animals to different climatic conditions, changed the shape and climate of his environment and transformed pants and animals. he subdued and disciplined electricity and compelled it to serve the interests of society.Nonetheless , with the consta expansion of agriculture and industry , man has robbed nature of too much of its irreplaceabl resources , poluted his own living environment and caused about 95% of the species that have existed over the past 600 million years to become extinct and still many others to be endangered . the previous dynamic balance between man and nature is on the verge of breaking down . man is now faced with the problem of how to stop , or at least to moderate the destructive effect of technology on nature .The crisis of the ecological situation has become a global problem . the solution to the problem depends on rational and wise organization both of production itself and care for mother nature . this can only be done by all humanity , rather than by individuals , enterprises or separate countries.2 Technology is a hot issue nowadays. the defenders of technology stress its advantages while the opponents emphasize its disadvantages. Neither side has ever taken the time to look at the opposite point of view. The defenders of technology hold that with technology peoples living conditions have been greatly improved. For example the boom in productivity has made goods better and cheaper. Therefore ,tings that were once luxuries, such as jet travel and long-distance phone calls have become necessities. Medical technology in particular has benefited us a lot ,especially in prolonging life expectancy. On the other hand, the opponents of technology argue that technology makes life obviously worse. Telemarketing traffic jams and identity theft are all phenomena that make people consciously unhappy. In addition many people believe technology disrupts relationships and fractures community.Ever since the Industrial Revolution the relationship between happiness and technology has been an eternal subject for social critics and philosophers, though economists and social scientists have seldom touched on the topic. However in 1974 the economist Richard Easterlin did groundbreaking work on the relationship between prosperity and well-being. In his famous paper entitled Does Economic Growth Improve the Human Lot Easterlin showed that there was no real correlation between a nations income level and its citizens happiness in the developed countries. In fact technology is neither good nor bad. It depends on what we want to do with it. Therefore the responsibility belongs exclusively to humans who have to acquire a social conscience to respect human beings nature and its balances.3 According to craig Russell , when we make an initial effort in our personal quests for knowledge , we may not even know that a certain fild of learning exists . but , after we have done some reading ,we will get to know more about the topic .at the same time ,we may feel that all the reading creates more questions rather than answers them . we then realize how little we really know and how much more we need to read and think and write . Russell suggests that we write after reading each time . his experience tells him that it is his writing that has led him to acquire a better grasp of the topic he studies . people may think that only those who know and who are (sure ) of themselves write . for Russell , however , it’s just the opposite, for writing doesn’t close things off ----it opens things up .To say that the m ore we know , the more we know we don’t know seems contradictory .according to Russell , modern physics tells us that reality itself is contradictory . the more closely scientists look into our physical reality , the more it slips away from . in a way , the more they learn , the less they know .Craig Russell believes that a proper understanding will inevitably lead us away from the force and rigidity of dogmatism and toward the flexibility and freedom of the individual. Therefore, we must temper our pride in knowing with the humility of not knowing. the truth always exists there ,but , it is like the rainbow because we can never really grasp it , never hold it in our hands and truly know it . we can only , as William james said , “live today by what truth we can get today and be ready to call it falsehood tomorrow.”4 Most people have work to do. With work, they can enjoy their lives. However people who did physical labor were looked down upon in the past. Many people were compelled to take manual labor because it was an absolute necessity for them to earn a living and to support their families. By contrast, people who did mental work were highly respected. Under the influence of this idea, even today some people still idealize their future when making choices for their career. What they care most about is whether the job can give them enough social status rather than whether they can realize their values in it. In their eyes, those who do manual labor should still be classified as inferior in social status. In fact, there is no essential difference between those who work with their hands and those who work with their mind. Whether a job is labor or work does not depend on the job itself but on people‘s attitude toward it. As long as you like your job, you will think you are fortunate enough to take it and you will do it enthusiastically.5 What dose success mean to you ? does it mean wealth , fame , power , or something else ? different people have different in life so they understand success in different ways . some people chase money their whole lives .to them, more money means more success . some people run after fame . With fame and reputation, they can gain the admiration and love of many others. However, some people dedicate themselves to the well-being of society.Doubtlessly, money is something that can be used as a reward to those who have done valuable work. Those who perform their work excellently should be paid sufficiently. But success cannot be measured in monetary terms, nor in terms of the amount of power one may exercise over others. After all, money and power can assure people neither of happiness nor of respect from others.Fame, too, is a flawed measure of success. Momentary fame can bring great joy to thosewho have it for a time. but they are very likely to become the slaves of their celebrity because of the public’s demands .in addition , they will easily become the target of everyone who disagrees with them and of the media as well .to be frank , if one is unable to fully enjoy life and liberty , the short-lived success is nothing but illusoryTherefore, to achieve the right kind of success is vitally important. as long as one can combines his own material needs and spiritual satisfaction with those of the well-beings of society , he should be held in high regard.6 . Truth is a fact accept as true, for which proof exists .Truth is a great principle , without which beauty may fade and love may wither. Those who uphold truth have a strong sense of responsibility. Those who hold firmly to truth are faithful to their duty and the people they serve .they commit themselves to the well-being of others. With aspirations to make a contribution to society, they are ready to correct their own mistakes , If any . it can be said that they are men of moral integrity who never ask for gratitude in return.Truth dawns upon us slowly but surely .in the long quest for truth, people have (accumulated)precious knowledge and experience. However, truth also needs nourishment just as plants need water, because many people are too preoccupied with petty and sometimes even mean concerns to respond to the great beauty of truth when it flowers or they frequently fail to appreciate truth when it is tendered. In short, truth is an invaluable asset to the whole of humanity. Stick to the truth and we will weave a timeless pattern, and earn the respect and esteem of others , elevate the world today above its present imperfections and place ourselves in the proud position of promoting the good of the humanity.7. we often hear people say, time is money .But today many Americans have come to realize that the crazy pursuit of money is leavings them too little timeto enjoy life .they are tired of working just for the luxuries of life and beginning to change their fast-paced lifestyles for a simple and frugal one ,hoping to keep family ,friends, work and play all of a piece .For some people, creating a more balanced life involves changing jobs o locations .For others, it means trading two incomes for one, in which case they must curtail expenses. So some have sold out their splendid homesick and moved into smaller houses. They have given up the extra cars, unnecessary modern conveniences, and expensive hobbies .They now do things by themselves to avoid paying for the services of others .They resist the temptation to purchase things on impulse and spend money only on bare necessities and things that do not make wasteful use of the earth's resources .However ,they do not deny themselves what they like or enjoy .The change in their lifestyle is not one involving deprivation ;it is just simplification .They believe that they can still live a happy and fulfilling life on less money .Indeed ,whether we maintain a healthy lifestyle or not does not depend on how wealthy we are but on whether we have the resolve and courage to discard our old consumption habits .8. The story of an Hour leaves us much to think about .In the story ,when Richardson ,who worked in the newspaper office ,learned that his friend Brently Mallard had been killed in a railroad disaster, he was greatly shocked .he only waited until he was assured by a second telegram and then hehastened to go to Josephine ,sister of Brently's wife ,and asked her to break the news as gently as possible to her sister because he knew MRS. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble .He was afraid that if someone less tender brought the message to her ahead of him ,there might be dreadful consequences. People usually expect a wife to accept such sad news with a paralyzed inability ,but did not .At the news ,she wept at once ,with sudden ,wild abandonment in her sister's arms ,and then she went to her own room ,forbidding anyone else to go in.When she was alone ,she felt something subtle coming to her ,which gradually came to her mind ,beginning to possess her. Hard as she tried ,she couldn't get rid of the feeling .What was it ?She didn't know .However ,a clear and excited perception occupied her which made her regard her husband's death no longeron as something important ,because beyond that bitter moment she saw a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely ,during which her husband would not impose his will upon her any more .Just at that moment ,her husband came back ,travel-stained carrying his briefcase and umbrella .Seeing him ,she died of a sudden heart attack .。

新世纪大学英语综合教程4完形填空答案及原文
1 Man has a blood tie with nature and nobody can live outside nature. Nature providesus with we need: the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat.For quite a long time after man began to live in the realm of nature, he lived in fearof its destructive forces. he used to regard nature with its elemental forces as somethinghostile to him. And even the forest was something wild and frightening to him. veryoften ,he was unable to obtain the merest daily necessities though he worked together withothers stubbornly and collectively with his imperfect tools , through his interaction withnature , man changed it gradually . he cut down forest , cultivated land , transferred variousspecies of plants and animals to different climatic conditions, changed the shape and climateof his environment and transformed pants and animals. he subdued and disciplined electricityand compelled it to serve the interests of society.Nonetheless , with the consta expansion of agriculture and industry , man has robbednature of too much of its irreplaceabl resources , poluted his own living environment andcaused about 95% of the species that have existed over the past 600 million years to becomeextinct and still many others to be endangered . the previous dynamic balance between manand nature is on the verge of breaking down . man is now faced with the problem of howto stop , or at least to moderate the destructive effect of technology on nature .The crisis of the ecological situation has become a global problem . the solution tothe problem depends on rational and wise organization both of production itself and carefor mother nature . this can only be done by all humanity , rather than by individuals ,enterprises or separate countries.2 Technology is a hot issue nowadays. the defenders of technology stress its advantageswhile the opponents emphasize its disadvantages. Neither side has ever taken the time tolook at the opposite point of view. The defenders of technology hold that with technology peoples living conditions havebeen greatly improved. For example the boom in productivity has made goods better and cheaper. Therefore ,tings that were once luxuries, such as jet travel and long-distance phone callshave become necessities. Medical technology in particular has benefited us a lot ,especiallyin prolonging life expectancy. On the other hand, the opponents of technology argue that technology makes life obviouslyworse. Telemarketing traffic jams and identity theft are all phenomena that make peopleconsciously unhappy. In addition many people believe technology disrupts relationships andfractures community.Ever since the Industrial Revolution the relationship between happiness and technologyhas been an eternal subject for social critics and philosophers, though economists and socialscientists have seldom touched on the topic. However in 1974 the economist Richard Easterlindid groundbreaking work on the relationship between prosperity and well-being. In his famouspaper entitled Does Economic Growth Improve the Human Lot Easterlin showed that there wasno real correlation between a nations income level and its citizens happiness in the developedcountries. In fact technology is neither good nor bad. It depends on what we want to do with it.Therefore the responsibility belongs exclusively to humans who have to acquire a socialconscience to respect human beings nature and its balances.forquests personal our in effort initial an make we when , Russell craig to 3 Accordingknowledge , we may not even know that a certain fild of learning exists . but , after wehave done some reading ,we will get to know more about the topic .atthe same time ,wemay feel that all the reading creates more questions rather than answers them . we thenrealize how little we really know and how much more we need to read and think and write .Russell suggests that we write after reading each time . his experience tells him that itis his writing that has led him to acquire a better grasp of the topic he studies . peoplemay think that only those who know and who are ( sure ) of themselves write . for Russell ,however , it's just the opposite, for writing doesn't close things off ----it opens thingsup .To say that the more we know , the more we know we don't know seems contradictory .according to Russell , modern physics tells us that reality itself iscontradictory . the more closely scientists look into our physical reality , the more itslips away from . in a way , the more they learn , the less they know . Craig Russell believes that a proper understanding will inevitably lead us away from theforce and rigidity of dogmatism and toward the flexibility and freedom of the individual. Therefore, we must temper our pride in knowing with the humility of not knowing. the truthalways exists there ,but , it is like the rainbow because we can never really grasp it ,never hold it in our hands and truly know it . we can only , as William james said , “livetoday by what truth we can get today and be ready to call it falsehood tomorrow.”4 Most people have work to do. With work, they can enjoy their lives. However people whodid physical labor were looked down upon in the past. Many people were compelled to takemanual labor because it was an absolute necessity for them to earn a living and to supporttheir families. By contrast, people who did mental work were highly respected. Under theinfluence of this idea, even today some people still idealize their future when making choicesfor their career. What they care most about is whether the job can givethem enough socialstatus rather than whether they can realize their values in it. In their eyes, those whodo manual labor should still be classified as inferior in social status. In fact, there is no essential difference between those who work with their hands andthose who work with their mind. Whether a job is labor or work does not depend on the jobitself but on people‘s attitude toward it. As long as you like your job, you will thinkyou are fortunate enough to take it and you will do it enthusiastically.5 What dose success mean to you ? does it mean wealth , fame , power , or something else ?different people have different in life so they understand success in different ways . somepeople chase money their whole lives .to them, more money means more success . some peoplerun after fame . With fame and reputation, they can gain the admiration and love of manyothers. However, some people dedicate themselves to the well-being of society.Doubtlessly, money is something that can be used as a reward to those who have done valuablework. Those who perform their work excellently should be paid sufficiently. But successcannot be measured in monetary terms, nor in terms of the amount of power one may exerciseover others. After all, money and power can assure people neither of happiness nor of respectfrom others.Fame, too, is a flawed measure of success. Momentary fame can bring great joy to thosewho have it for a time. but they are very likely to become the slaves of their celebritybecause of the public's demands .in addition , they will easily become the target of everyone, if one is unable to fullyfrank who disagrees with them and of the media as well .to beenjoy life and liberty , the short-lived success is nothing but illusory Therefore, to achieve the right kind of success is vitally important. as long as one cancombines his own material needs and spiritual satisfaction with those of the well-beingsof society , he should be held in high regard.6 . Truth is a fact accept as true, for which proof exists .Truth is a greatprinciple , without which beauty may fade and love may wither. Those who upholdtruth have a strong sense of responsibility. Those who hold firmly to truthare faithful to their duty and the people they serve .they commit themselvesto the well-being of others. With aspirations to make a contribution to society, they are ready to correct their own mistakes , If any . it can be said thatthey are men of moral integrity who never ask for gratitude in return.Truth dawns upon us slowly but surely .in the long quest for truth, peoplehave (accumulated)precious knowledge and experience. However, truth also needsnourishment just as plants need water, because many people are too preoccupiedwith petty and sometimes even mean concerns to respond to thegreat beauty oftruth when it flowers or they frequently fail to appreciate truth when it istendered. In short, truth is an invaluable asset to the whole of humanity. Stick tothe truth and we will weave a timeless pattern, and earn the respect and esteemof others , elevate the world today above its present imperfections and placeourselves in the proud position of promoting the good of the humanity.7. we often hear people say, time is money .But today many Americans have cometo realize that the crazy pursuit of money is leavings them too little timeof life andluxuries to enjoy life .they are tired of working just for the beginning to change their fast-paced lifestyles for a simple and frugalone ,hoping to keep family ,friends, work and play all of apiece .For some people, creating a more balanced life involves changing jobs olocations .For others, it means trading two incomes for one, in which case theymust curtail expenses. So some have sold out their splendid homesick and movedinto smaller houses. They have given up the extra cars, unnecessary modernconveniences, and expensive hobbies .They now do things by themselves to avoidpaying for the services of others .They resist the temptation to purchase thingson impulse and spend money only on bare necessities and things that do not makewasteful use of the earth's resources .However ,they do not deny themselves what they like orenjoy .The change intheir lifestyle is not one involving deprivation ;it is just simplification .They believe that they can still live a happy and fulfillinglife on less money .Indeed ,whether we maintain a healthylifestyle or not doesnot depend on how wealthy we are but on whether we have the resolve and courageto discard our old consumption habits .8. The story of an Hour leaves us much to think about .In the story ,when Richardson ,who worked in the newspaper office ,learned thathis friend Brently Mallard had been killed in a railroad disaster, he was greatlyshocked .he only waited until he was assured by a second telegram and then heto go to Josephine ,sister of Brently's wife ,and asked her to breakhastenedthe news as gently as possible to her sister because he knew MRS. Mallard wasafflicted with a heart trouble .He was afraid that if someone less tender broughtthe message to her ahead of him ,there might be dreadfulconsequences.People usually expect a wife to accept such sad news with a paralyzedinability ,but did not .At the news ,she wept at once ,with sudden ,wildabandonment in her sister's arms ,and then she went to her own room ,forbiddinganyone else to go in.When she was alone ,she felt something subtle coming toher ,which graduallycame to her mind ,beginning to possess her. Hard as she tried ,she couldn'tget rid of the feeling .What was it ?She didn't know .However ,a clear and excitedperception occupied her which made her regard her husband's death no longeronas something important ,because beyond that bitter moment she saw a longprocession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely ,during whichher husband would not impose his will upon her any more . Just at that moment ,her husband came back ,travel-stainedcarrying hisbriefcase and umbrella .Seeing him ,she died of a sudden heart attack .。

To be happy, a man must feel, firstly, free and, secondly, important. He cannot be really happy if he is compelled by society to do what he does not enjoy doing, or if what he enjoys doing is ignored by society as of no value or importance. In a society where slavery in the strict sense has been abolished, whether what a man does has social value depends on whether he is paid money to do it ,but a laborer today can rightly be called a wage slave. A man is a laborer if the job society offers him is of no interest to himself but he is compelled to take it by the necessity of earning a living and supporting his family. The opposite to labor is play. When we play a game, we enjoy what we are doing, otherwise we should not play it, but it is a purely private activity; society could not care less whether we play it or not.Between labor and play stands work. A man is a worker if he is personally interested in the job which society pays him to do; what from the point of view of society is necessary labor is from his own point of view voluntary play. Whether a job is to be classified as labor or work depends, not on the job itself, but on the tastes of the individual who undertakes it. The difference does not, for example, coincide with the difference between a manual and a mental job; a gardener or a cobbler may be a worker, a bank clerk a laborer. Which a man is can be seen from his attitude toward leisure. To a worker, leisure means simply the hours he needs to relax and rest in order to work efficiently. He is therefore more likely to take too little leisure than too much; workers die of heart attacks and forget their wives' birthdays. To the laborer, on the other hand, leisure means freedom from compulsion, so that it is natural for him to imagine that the fewer hours he has to spend laboring, and the more hours he is free to play, the better. What percentage of the population in a modern technological society are, like myself, in the fortunate position of being workers? At a guess I would say sixteen per cent, and I do not think that figure is likely to get bigger in the future.Technology and the division of labor have done two things: by eliminating in many fields the need for special strength or skill, they have made a very large number of paid occupations which formerly were enjoyable work into boring labor, and by increasing productivity they have reduced the number of necessary laboring hours. It is already possible to imagine a society in which the majority of the population, that is to say, its laborers, will have almost as much leisure as in earlier times was enjoyed by the aristocracy. When one recalls how aristocracies in the past actually behaved, the prospect is not cheerful. Indeed, the problem of dealing with boredom may be even more difficult for such a future mass society than it was for aristocracies. The latter, for example, ritualized their time; there was a season to shoot grouse, a season to spend in town, etc. The masses are more likely to replace an unchanging ritual by fashion which changes as often as possible in the economic interest of certain people. Again, the masses cannot go in for hunting, for very soon there would be no animals left to hunt. For other aristocratic amusements like gambling, dueling, and warfare, it may be only too easy to find equivalents in dangerous driving, drug-taking, and senseless acts of violence. Workers seldom commit acts of violence, because they can put their aggression into their work, be it physical like the work of a smith, or mental like the work of a scientist or an artist. The role of aggression in mental work is aptly expressed by the phrase "getting one's teeth into a problem."Unit 5 Stripping Down to Bare HappinessThe couple's decision was to trade two full-time careers for two half-time careers, and to curtail consumption. They decided to spend their money only on things that contributed to their major goal, the construction of a world where family and friendship, work and play, were all of a piece, a world, moreover, which did not make wasteful use of the earth's resources.Today, they live in the same suburban community in a handsome, energy-efficient home they designed themselves. Small by most standards, it is easy to clean, furnish, maintain and heat. The first floor, one large room, has a kitchen area along one wall, a birch table and chairs for dining, a living area defined by a comfortable couch and a wood stove, and a corner work area. Upstairs is their bedroom, an office that serves them both, and a bathroom. It is bright and light and in harmony with its surroundings. Soon there will be a solar greenhouse outside the front door. How can a couple with two part-time freelance jobs afford to build their own home, own a car, and share a small boat with another couple – all without a loan? How can they maintain a high standard of living that provides "everything" they want? What is it they have given up that they do not miss? For one thing, they have given up all the expensive clutter –medicine cabinets full of cosmetics and over-the-counter drugs they will never use; kitchen cabinets crowded with items they would eventually throw away. The one clothes closet Sara shares with Michael easily contains the basic items in their wardrobes, many of them well-made classic styles from L. L. Bean. "I'm constantly giving things away," Sara explains. By sifting and discarding, by keeping track of what they have, Sara and Michael have a clear idea of what they really need. They do not have a dishwasher;the number of hand-thrown pottery dishes they own would not fill one. They do not own a clothes dryer; the wet clothes, drying indoors in winter, eliminate the need for a humidifier. Sara's dark hair is short. She does not need a hairdryer, electric curlers, or a curling iron. Their front yard is wooded. They do not need a power mower or electric clippers. They do not own a TV, and so they and their child are not constantly saturated with images of new toys, new things, and new temptations.Unit 6 Two Truths to Live ByThe art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let go. An ancient man said long ago: "A man comes to this world with his fist clenched, but when he dies, his hand is open."Surely we ought to hold fast to life, for it is wonderful, and full of a beauty. We know that this is so, but all too often we recognize this truth only in our backward glance when we remember what it was and then suddenly realize that it is no more.We remember a beauty that faded, a love that withered. But we remember with far greater pain that we did not see that beauty when it flowered, that we failed to respond with love when it was tendered.A recent experience re-taught me this truth. I was hospitalized following a severe heart attack and had been in intensive care for several days. It was not a pleasant place. One morning, I had to have some additional tests. The required machines were located in a building at the opposite end of the hospital, so I had to be wheeled across the courtyard in a chair. As we emerged from our unit, the sunlight hit me. That's all there was to my experience. Just the light of the sun. And yet how beautiful it was – how warming; how sparkling; how brilliant!I looked to see whether anyone else relished the sun's golden glow, but everyone was hurrying to and fro, most with eyes fixed on the ground. Then I remembered how often I, too, had been indifferent to the grandeur of each day, too preoccupied with petty and sometimes even mean concerns to respond to the great beauty of it all.Unit 41.
