Arthur Miller的英文简介
Arthur Miller的英文简介Arthur Miller Arthur Miller is a great dramatist to come out of the 1940s; he has led the postwar new drama along with Tennessee Williams. Arthur Miller lived in the postwar period. The history background of this period multi-faceted: The world warⅡ leaves people in fright and disturbance. Cold war and McCarthyism intensify the sense of fright. People started to doubt that technique really can bring people bliss. Besides, baby boom leads to the surge of population, which causes many environmental problems. Civil right movement in the 1960s gives black people much motivation, promoting the flourish of post war African American literature. Literature in this period is considered as “multi-cultural” literature. Many forms of post-modern fiction appeared, such as metafiction, anti-novel, surfiction, etc. The same mood in this period is despair, but continuing to search absurdity of modern life; lonely, but searching for the meaning of existence; identity. A typical theme of Arthur Miller’s conce rns the dilemma of modern man in relation to his family and work. What occurs often in a miller play is that the hero finds himself under a pressure from his society and its ethics, tries in vain to extricate himself from the physical and spiritual quandary into which he has fallen and finds release only in death, often in the form of actual or virtual suicide. The world is harsh. There is little or no choice for the hero. Either he submits to the impossible demands of society, or he rejects them. He dies in either case. Miller is, however, not completely pessimistic. Reading his plays, one feels a faith in man and in life, however vague it may be, though very often gloom overweighs hope. Arthur Miller is best known as author of Death of a Salesman. It is a sad version of the American dream. The staging of death of a salesman, his masterpiece, won him the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and established him once and for all as a writer of no small talent. When miller did was to wipe out the old realistic stage setting and go back to the Elizabethan kind of stage where the audience saw a house which was only a frame.。

"In all my plays and books I try to take settings and dramatic situations from life which involve real questions of right and wrong." 1. The idealist who pays too much for his inability to compromise. All My Sons' Chris Keller's insists on dredging up a past that holds unbearable truths. Victor Frank in The Price, sacrificed his career dreams to support his father but his virtue has brought the additional cost of resentment and the crippling inability to move forward when given the opportunity.
Hale Waihona Puke 4. The Guilt of the survivor.
Chris Keller, unlike his father, bears no responsibility for the death of his brother and other victims of the war. Yet he is haunted by the fact that he's alive while others died.. This theme of the guilt of those who escape, dates back to the playwright's first play, The Man Who Had All the Luck and recurs in After the Fall.

Winner of many literary and dramatic award, Miller is an important force in American drama. His major characters are ordinary and suffering individuals seemingly trapped by naturalistic circumstances. And yet, Miller points out, they have dignity if not human greatness.
The Great Depression
The Great Depression was an economic slump in North America, Europe, and other industrialized areas of the world that began in 1929 and lasted until about 1939. It was the longest and most severe depression ever experienced by the industrialized Western world.

Though clearly an indictment of the McCarthyism of the early 1950s, “The Crucible” , the third of his major plays, was set in Salem during the witch-hunts of the late 17th century. Within three years, Miller was called before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, and convicted of contempt of Congress for not cooperating. A difficult time in his life, Miller ended a short and turbulent marriage with actress Marilyn Monroe.

六年第二单元英语作文写作品梗概英语作文全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1A Glimpse into the World of Arthur Miller's The CrucibleAs I embarked on the journey of analyzing Arthur Miller's renowned play, The Crucible, I found myself captivated by the intricate tapestry of themes and characters that Miller wove together. Set against the backdrop of the Salem Witch Trials in 1692, this work transcends its historical context, offering a profound exploration of human nature, societal dynamics, and the consequences of unchecked fear and hysteria. The play's central character, John Proctor, is a complex figure who embodies both admirable qualities and tragic flaws. A respected farmer in the Puritan community of Salem, Proctor is initially portrayed as a man of integrity, struggling to reconcile his past indiscretion with his desire for redemption. His unwavering pursuit of truth and justice in the face of the witch hunt serves as a testament to his moral courage, making him a tragic hero in the truest sense.Miller masterfully juxtaposes Proctor's character with that of Abigail Williams, the ruthless and manipulative instigator of the witch accusations. Abigail's vengeance, fueled by her obsession with Proctor and her desire for power, sets in motion a chain of events that spiral out of control, leading to the tragic deaths of innocent individuals. Her deceit and cunning manipulation of the court proceedings highlight the dangers of unchecked ambition and the erosion of societal values. One of the play's most poignant themes revolves around the concept of truth and its fragility in the face of mass hysteria. Miller skillfully illustrates how the pursuit of truth can be distorted by fear, paranoia, and the desire for self-preservation. The court proceedings, presided over by the unyielding Deputy Governor Danforth, become a mockery of justice, with accusations and hearsay taking precedence over reason and evidence. The play also delves into the complex dynamics of Puritan society, where rigid adherence to religious doctrine and societal norms often clashes with individual desires and the pursuit of personal freedom. Miller portrays the Puritan community as a microcosm of the broader human condition, where fear andintolerance can breed hysteria and blind obedience, ultimately leading to tragic consequences. One character who stands out as a beacon of reason and moral fortitude is Rebecca Nurse, a respected and pious woman falsely accused of witchcraft. Her unwavering faith and integrity serve as a powerful contrast to the malicious actions of Abigail and her followers, highlighting the importance of maintaining a moral compass in the face of adversity. As the play reaches its climax, John Proctor's decision to sacrifice his life rather than falsely confess to witchcraft becomes a powerful testament to his unwavering commitment to truth and personal integrity. His final act of defiance resonates deeply, reminding us of the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of overwhelming societal pressures.Throughout the play, Miller masterfully weaves in allegories and parallels to the McCarthy era and the communist witch hunts of the 1950s, underscoring the timeless relevance of the themes explored in The Crucible. The play serves as a cautionary tale against the dangers of mass hysteria, the erosion of civil liberties, and the consequences of sacrificing truth and justice for personal gain or political expediency. In conclusion, Arthur Miller's The Crucible is a profound and thought-provoking work that transcends its historical setting to offer a poignant commentary on the human condition. Through its complex characters, powerful themes, and masterful storytelling, the play invites us to confront our own biases, question societal norms, and recognize the importance of upholding truth and justice in the face of adversity. Miller's masterpiece stands as a timeless reminder of the fragility of social order and the eternal struggle between individual conscience and societal conformity.篇2Writing a Plot Summary for My English CompositionI've always struggled with writing assignments, especially when it comes to analyzing literature. That's why I'm really dreading this upcoming English composition where we have to write a plot summary for a novel or short story that we've read. I know my teacher Mrs. Roberts is going to expect a thorough and insightful analysis, and I'm just not sure I'm up for the task.I decided to re-read the novel we covered this semester - Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I figured that since it's a classic I'm familiar with, it would be an easy choice for thisassignment. But as I started rereading, I realized just how complex the plot really is with all its twists, turns, and character interactions. Writing a concise yet comprehensive summary is going to be tougher than I thought.First off, I need to introduce the main characters - the Bennet family and their five unmarried daughters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. I'll have to give some background on their financial situation and the emphasis placed on the girls finding wealthy husbands in that era. Then I'll bring in the wealthy, proud Mr. Darcy and describe his disdainful first impression of the Bennets. I can't forget to mention the affable Mr. Bingley and how he arrives and instantly falls for the beautiful Jane Bennet. From there, I'll really need to dive into the jumbled romantic entanglements and misunderstandings that occur between the different couples. Like when Darcy insults Elizabeth and she develops a prejudice against him. Or Bingley's sudden departure from the area, leaving a heartbroken Jane. I'll have to explain Wickham's accusations against Darcy and how Elizabeth believes them at first. Then there's the dramatic elopement episode involving Lydia and Wickham that threatens the Bennet family's reputation.Somehow I'll need to neatly tie together all these storylines and convey how Elizabeth's feelings gradually transform from hatred to a romantic interest in Darcy after she learns the truth about his character. I'll have to build up to the climax when Darcy proposes to her and she finally accepts. And I can't forget to wrap things up by summarizing the two weddings - Darcy and Elizabeth, Bingley and Jane.I know the plot summary should focus mainly on summarizing the key events and character arcs through an objective lens. But part of me wants to interject my own commentary and analysis on some of the novel's bigger themes like class, reputation, pride, prejudice, and the role of women in that time period. I'll have to be careful about finding the right balance.Writing technique and style will be important too. I'll need to establish an academic, literary tone using sophisticated vocabulary and flawless grammar. Proper formatting with an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion will be expected. Including relevant quotations from the text would be a plus to support my plot points. Mrs. Roberts is a stickler for things like that. Most importantly, I need to make sure my summary isn't just a dry regurgitation of events, but an engaging narrative that captures the essence of the story. I'll have to find a way to convey the novel's wit, romance, and social commentary in my own voice. It would be such a shame to drain all the life out of such a rich, beloved classic. Now that I've thought it through, I'm realizing this assignment is going to push me to draw upon numerous academic skills - critical reading, comprehension, analysis, prioritization, organization, composition, and technique. It's making me anxious just thinking about it all!But maybe that's the point - to get me out of my comfort zone and force me to develop a more advanced grasp of literature and writing. Mrs. Roberts always says the texts we study are opportunities to explore the complexities of storytelling, human nature, and life itself. As difficult as this assignment may be, hopefully it will make me a better reader, writer, and thinker.Writing this plot summary is sure to be an immense challenge. But if I can successfully analyze, summarize, and express my interpretation of a profound work like Pride and Prejudice, perhaps I'll come out of this feeling more confident inmy overall abilities as a student. I guess the only way to find out is to dive in and give it my best effort. Wish me luck!篇3English Composition: Summarizing a Literary WorkAs an avid reader, I always look forward to the unit on summarizing literary works in my English class. Being able to concisely capture the essence of a novel, play or poem is a valuable skill that requires careful reading, analysis and precise writing. For this assignment, I chose to summarize Harper Lee's classic novel "To Kill a Mockingbird."To begin, I re-read the novel, taking detailed notes on the major plot points, characters, themes and motifs. The story is set in the 1930s in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama and is narrated by the young Scout Finch. Her father, Atticus, is a middle-aged lawyer who ends up defending a black man named Tom Robinson, who has been falsely accused of raping a white woman. The trial, and the events surrounding it, expose thedeep-seated racial injustice prevalent in the town. Despite the overwhelming evidence of Tom's innocence, the white jury convicts him due to racial prejudices. This miscarriage of justiceprofoundly impacts Scout and her brother Jem, shattering their childhood naive beliefs about fairness and equality. Ultimately, Tom tries to escape from prison and is shot dead.In addition to the central plot involving the trial, the novel explores several other interwoven storylines and themes. The reclusive Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbor who never leaves his house, emerges as an important motif and symbol of courage and innocence. Scout, Jem and their summer friend Dill become obsessed with catching a glimpse of Boo, representing society's prejudices against the unknown and different.Furthermore, Scout's journey from an innocent child to a young woman exposed to the harsh realities of racism and injustice forms the core of the bildungsroman narrative. Atticus emerges as a model of integrity, firmly committed to justice and truth despite threats from the racist community. His moral guidance helps shape Scout's maturation process. The novel explores heavy themes such as racial discrimination, courage in the face of adversity, social inequality, innocence, and the moral education of children. Lee uses vivid descriptions, dialect, and clever mockingbird symbolism to bring the segregated South to life. While the central plot revolvesaround the trial, the heart of the story lies in Scout's powerful character arc.In summarizing "To Kill a Mockingbird," I focused on capturing the core narrative while touching upon the major themes, characters and motifs. Racism, injustice and moral education form the thematic crux, exemplified through the trial and Scout's growing pains. Atticus serves as the moral beacon, while Boo Radley symbolizes innocence shunned by society. Scout undergoes a powerful bildungsroman trajectory, losing her childhood naivete but gaining a deeper understanding of ethics and courage.Condensing a rich narrative like this into a succinct summary proved challenging yet rewarding. I had to be judicious in selecting the most significant plot points, characters and themes to include while omitting many intriguing subplots and details. Ultimately, crafting an effective summary requires recognizing the core essence and prioritizing the elements that are indispensable to communicating that. With "To Kill a Mockingbird," the unjust trial coupled with Scout's loss of innocence emerged as the central anchors around which I built my summary. This exercise in summarization enhanced my ability to identify central narratives, analyze literary elements, and compose concise yet comprehensive overviews. Moving forward, I feel more confident in my skills to critically read complex works and extract their fundamental components into articulate summaries. Literature summaries play a vital role in literary analysis, criticism and recommendations, making this a valuable tool for any avid reader and writer.。
