Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde钟海芳2013141051049外国语英语六班Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a novella written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson that was first published in 1886. It is about a lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange cases between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde.John Utterson takes his weekly walk with his cousin Enfield, who tells Utterson an encounter he had seen some months ago while coming back home late at night between a young girl and a strange man. The man, who later claims that his name is Edward Hyde, knocks the young girl down to ground and then keeps on stepping on her again and again until Enfield and the girls' family come and stop him. After a doctor comes and assures them that the young girl is alright, the girls' families force Hyde to pay 100 pounds to avoid the scandal they will otherwise spread for his miserable behavior. Hyde leads them to a building, disappears, and re-emerges with 10 pounds in gold and a cheque for the rest, drawn on the account of a reputable gentleman, who later turns out to be Dr. Henry Jekyll, a client and old friend of Utterson. Utterson fells very weird and confused for Jekyll had recently and suddenly changed his will to make Hyde the sole beneficiary. Fearing that his friend Jekyll is being blackmailed by Hyde, Utterson makes an effort to seek out Hyde, whose ugliness, as if deformed, amazes Utterson. Utterson feels that Hyde makes him uncomfortable though he cannot say exactly how or why. Much to Utterson's surprise, Hyde willingly offers Utterson his address. After one of Jekyll's dinner parties, Utterson stays behind to discuss the matter of Hyde with Jekyll. Utterson notices Jekyll turning pale, yet he assures Utterson that everything involving Hyde is in order and that Hyde should be left alone.A year passes quickly and uneventfully. One night, a police and a servant girl come to Utterson's apartment and tell him a murder that the servant girl witnessed. The victim was Sir Danvers Carew, another of Utterson's clients who was carrying a letter addressed to Utterson when he was was killed. When they arrive at the apartment, the suspect, who is said to be Hyde, according to the servant girl who witnesses the whole murder, has vanished, but the cane (described as being of a strong wood but broken due to the beating) used to beat the victim to death, left behind a door. Utterson recognizes it is a gift he gave to Jekyll. Utterson again visits Jekyll. Jekell shows Utterson a note, which is said to be written to Jekyll by Hyde, apologizing for the trouble that he has caused him and saying goodbye. That night, however, Utterson's clerk points out that Hyde's handwriting bears a remarkable similarity to Jekyll's own.For a few months, Jekyll lives his former normal life. Later, he suddenly starts refusing visitors, including Utterson. Dr. Hastie Lanyon, an acquaintance of Jekyll and Utterson, dies suddenly of shock after receiving information about Jekyll. Before his death, Lanyon gives Utterson a letter, with instructions that he should open it after Jekyll's death or his disapperance. One day, Utterson goes ont walking with Enfield, and they see Jekyll at a window of his laboratory. The three men start talking, but suddenly, a look of horror comes over Jekyll's face, and he slams the window quickly and disappears. Soon afterwards, Jekyll's housekeeper, Mr. Poole, visits Utterson and asks him for help for Jekyll has locked himself in his laboratory for several weeks. Utterson goes to Jekyll's house as soon as he hears Poole's telling. Once there, they go to see the laboratory where the hears that the voice coming from inside is not the vice of Jekyll. Poole insists that his master Jekyll has been killed, while Utterson disagrees. After arguing for a moment, they reach an agreement to break into Jekyll's laboratory and have a look.In the laboratory, the find the body of Hyde wearing Jekyll's clothes and apparently dead from suicide, as well as a letter from Jekyll to Utterson promising to explain the entire mystery, but they don't find any trace of Jekyll. Utterson takes the letter home and reads Lanyon's letter first and then Jekyll's. From their letters, he gradually figures out all the mystery. In the letter, Jekyll make a confession that Jekyll is Hyde, and Hyde is Jekyll. Jekyll, as a knowledgeable doctor, found a way to transform himself into Hyde, who is pure evil and utterly uncaring to anyone but himself. Jekyll likes the feeling of becoming a self-indulgent man and doing something evil as Hyde without the fear that he will be caught and lose his social position as Jekyll. Initially, Jekyll was able to control the transformations, but eventually he would become Hyde automatically in his sleep. One night, he could not control himself and he immediately rushed out and violently killed Sir Danvers Carew after the transformation. He felt terrible and tried his best to stop the transformations, and for a time he proved successful to control it. One day, at a park, he considered what he had done during the past few months. Suddenly, he realized that he had suddenly transformed once again into Hyde. This shocked him for it was the first time that an automatically transformation had happened in waking hours. He feared to be caught as a murderer by police. He wrote to Lanyon (in Jekyll's hand), asking his friend to retrieve the contents of a cabinet in his laboratory and to meet him at midnight at Lanyon's home. In Lanyon's presence, Hyde transformed back into Jekyll, which shocked Lanyon badly and finally caused Lanyon's death. Meanwhile, Jekyll returned to his home, only to find himself even more hopeless and locked himself in the laboratory, refusing to meet any visitor. With days passing, he fails transforming back into Jekyll and becomes hopeless and sacred, that's why he dies as Hyde in the laboratory when Utterson and Poole break into the laboratory. He ended the letter saying "I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end". With these words, both the letter and the mystery come to a close. Before I read this book, I always have a thought, that is to remove my evil thoughts out of my mind. When I want to do something which runs contrary to the so-called morality, I always feel guilty. When I find that sometimes I found my happiness at the expense of others' unhappiness, I also feel shamed. As far as I am concerned, it is abnormal for a man who receives college education to do bad things or even have evil thoughts. I feel confused. While after finishing this book, it suddenly hits me that maybe there is a "Jekyll" and a "Hyde" in everyone's deep heart. Or in other words, there is always a "Hyde" in every "Jekyll". Human nature is so complicated that we can never predicate what decision a man will make under different environment. Jekyll in the story is an example of us ordinary people. Jekyll knows exactly it is wrong to be evil Hyde, but he cannot control himself to transform into the evil Hyde, and he even enjoys the feeling of being pure evil, from which he feels pleased instead of shamed when he has pleasure at the expense of other people's misfortune. He is in the struggle between good and evil, trying to be good, but hecannot rescue himself from the bad pleasure of being devil and controlling others. What we differ from Jekyll is that Jekyll finally is out of control, while most of us are being restrainted by moral principles and social conventions, which is the reason why the evil part of us doesn't conquer the good. Sad to Jekyll, he doesn't know that there is nothing to be ashamed of having two characters. In the unknown corner of people's deep heart, good coexists with evil. It is kind of a natural delicate balance. What matters is whether we can control it and deal with the delicate balance. In the relationship of deers and wolves, people all simply think that deers could live better without wolves. As a matter of fact, deers cannot live without wolves. They maintain an appropriate balance in the forest. But for the chasing of wolves, deers cannot be strong and healthy. Similarly, when separated, the good side of Jekyll becomes weaker and weaker. Instead, the evil side of him becomes stronger and stronger without the restraint of the good side. Only when good and evil share the same body and keep the balance in a proper way, can we be called a complete human being. Evil can never be abandoned. It is a part of human nature.Have you ever found the Mr. Hyde in your heart?。

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(化身博士)Robert Louis Stevenson (a famous English writer) spent 3days to complete this short fiction. “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”is a book with good consistency, full of mystery and fantasy.Dr. Jekyll is the top leader of this book, a doctor who is kind and famous. He wants to find a way to separate the kind side and the evil side of a person. So he used himself to do a horrible experiment. He is one of the normal people, but he doesn’t want to show the bad side of himself to the others. Finally, he invent a potion to transform himself into the cruel, ugly man——Hyde. Everyone will hate Hyde when they meet him for the first time and nobody can recognize Hyde is Dr. Jekyll. So Dr. Jekyll can do lots of bad things on the false pretenses of Hyde. A man would be free to be both people inside him.Actually, I have to say that the writer is intelligent. At the beginning of this novel, is just a story of a bad man. The writer isn’t say anything about this surprising experiment. Robert Louis Stevenson gives us a special start and believes we will attracted by this start. Yes, we are. Through this start, a big plot show to us step by step. Nobody can refuse a gift of a good book. The writer wants to say some psychological problems about people through the story of Dr. Jekyll. we are all people, we all have feelings, we all have both sides of us——the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The only question is, can you find a way to maintain your mental health? Maybe we can’t afford to have our own psychological consultant, but we can play games to relax ourselves, or realize any wildest dream in this virtual world. Imaging this, once our Dr. Jekyll has some evil minds, he can turn to his computer for help. Maybe he can play some action games to satisfy his desire for “passion”, just like people today. As soon as the bad side of him wants to control him, he will do some the other things instead of becoming Mr. Hyde.A successful novel is the details are intricate, and the ability of desc ribing the surrounding is a typical example. “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”meets the needs of these standards. The smart writer gives an end to this fiction as the truth of Mr. Hyde and the author doesn’t continually to write any more. He just gives the readers some space to imagine what will happen after the others know the truth and what kind of things the polices will do. The author give up describing polices investigate the crime about sir Danvers Carew clearly. And make the fiction become just a short story. Like a famous man says that “the charm of this book is that it’s just a short story but a long story”. Yes, this book will become dilator if develop its to a long story. Because its can’t give the readers a impression of having a well-knit plot, and people will loss the interest about this story.Right and wrong. Joy and despair. Good and evil. These are the themes Robert Louis Stevenson addresses in his work. Jekyll or Hyde impressed me most. As he said in the book, "I am one person of two sides." That's it. He's quite different from Lanyon and Utterson, and even differs from many characters in other. I love to read this character though I don't like this evil man at all. But I really take a great pity on this bad guy. On one hand, he gained much joy from the successful experiment. What's more, on the other hand, he can escape from punishment while doing badly as Hyde. So, we may guess why Stevenson names the bad guy Hyde, which sounds like "hide". Ihave to say that he is quite a success and very achievable, while just as a doctor or Jekyll, not Hyde at all. However, more bitterness than sweets had he tastes. Each time he recovered to Jekyll after doing bad, what a huge guilty he must burden. I still remember in his letter to Utterson, described was a poor man near to break down with much guilty and regrets beyond our thoughts and almost a lunatic. As a real human with emotions and affections, he is absolutely quite a failure despite of his achievements on science. Represented on the paper is a man full of evil! And I hope this tragedy on science never come true, for it will destroy all we have. This led me to a dramatic world. Hyde, who served a well-known drugs, Dr. Jekyll ──enjoy power. Dr. Jekyll, Since then becomes a very odd, as if fascinated by the drug, taking it all day long, so that "evil" the other side of Hyde, was also killed Dr. Andrei. When he turned back into Dr. Jekyll, whatever terrible crime Hyde did, he could always be safe a moment later. To know the truth of Dr. Lennon died due to depression. Dr. Jekyll taking the drugs, have not been able to control the other side of Hyde, lead to a situation out of control lost nature, never become Hyde, the change can not come back, and eventually died mad. Finally, a letter, so that's good friend, Dr. Utterson ──The lawyer knows the whole story.Do you have you thought about the other side of the "evil" part of it? In fact, it is invisible, is the book's protagonist water use will be "evil" character of the entity, but is essential, as a bright, peaceful co-existence must be. Also, good and evil, and so must survive in order to maintain a balance, if too good at the expense of the people but their own; if too evil, resulting in other people's troubles, it is not good! The book's main character has made a wrong model, so that their own personal awakening of evil, beyond the control of the lead, making Dr. Jekyll has been weak, Hyde has been the growth and development, the last being on the evil people who occupied the body of Hyde, so I proposed We must not let evil regained consciousnessMen , half of it is angel and the other is demon. What we should do is keeping our rational emotions to lock up the demon side in your body and try your best to keep balance both of them. So you may gain in happiness and the one you really are!。
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a classic novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is a story that delves into the duality of human nature and the struggle between good and evil. The novel has left a deep impression on me and has given me much to ponder about the nature of humanity. The story revolves around Dr. Henry Jekyll, a respected and successful scientist, who becomes obsessed with the idea of separating the good and evil aspects of his personality. He creates a potion that transforms him into the cruel and remorseless Mr. Hyde, allowing him to indulge in his darkest desires without consequence. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the two personas are inextricably linked, and the consequences of Jekyll's actions are devastating. One of the most striking aspects of the novel is its exploration of the duality of human nature. Dr. Jekyll represents the civilized, rational, and moral side of humanity, while Mr. Hyde embodies the primal, impulsive, and amoral side. This duality is a universal theme that resonates with readers, as it reflects the internal struggle that many people face in their own lives. The novel forces us to confront the idea that we all have the capacity for both good and evil within us, and that the line between the two is often blurred.Another thought-provoking aspect of the novel is its examination of the consequences of unchecked desires. Dr. Jekyll's decision to create the potion and indulge in his darker impulses leads to the destruction of his own life and the lives of those around him. This serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of giving in to our base instincts and the importance of self-control and moral responsibility. The character of Mr. Hyde is particularly chilling, as he represents the embodiment of pure evil. His actions are cruel and without remorse, and he shows no regard for the well-being of others. This serves as a stark reminder of the capacity for evil that exists within all of us, and the potential for great harm when it is unleashed. The novel also raises questions about the nature of identity and the extent to which we can control our own destinies. Dr. Jekyll's transformation into Mr. Hyde raises the question of whether we are truly in control of our own actions, or whether our baser instincts can overpower our rational minds. This is a deeply unsettling idea, as it suggests that we may not be as in control of ourselves as we would like to believe. In conclusion, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a thought-provoking and deeply unsettling novel that forces readers to confront the darker aspects of human nature. Its exploration of the duality of human nature, the consequences of unchecked desires, and the nature of identity make it a timeless and relevant work. It serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of giving in to our base instincts and the importance of moral responsibility. This novel has left a lasting impression on me, and I believe it will continue to resonate with readers for generations to come.。

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. HydeIt was a dark and stormy night. Dr. Jekyll, a respected scientist and gentleman, was alone in his study, lost in thought. He had been working on a new experiment that he hoped would separate the good and evil in a person's nature, but so far he had met with little success.Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Dr. Jekyll rose to answer it, but when he opened the door, no one was there. He was about to close the door when he noticed a small package on the floor.Curious, he picked up the package and opened it. Inside was a small glass bottle, which he recognized as one of his own experiments. He had made it in hopes of creating a potion that would transform him into a different person, freeing him of his dark impulses.Dr. Jekyll was eager to try the potion. He poured it into a glass and drank it down. Almost immediately, he felt a strange sensation comeover him. His body began to convulse, and his face twisted into an expression of pure horror. Then, to his horror, Dr. Jekyll realized that he had transformed into Mr. Hyde, a man who was the very opposite of himself. Hyde was ugly and brutish, with no trace of Jekyll's charm and intelligence. As Hyde, Dr. Jekyll committed a series of unspeakable crimes, acts that were completely out of character for the gentle scientist. Each time he reverted to his normal self, he was horrified by what he had done, but he was powerless to stop the transformations. Finally, Dr. Jekyll discovered a way to reverse the potion's effects and break the curse that had been placed upon him. He swore never to experiment with such things again and to focus instead on studying the natural world and its wonders.。
化身博士(Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde )1000字原创英文读后感
Reading ReportName: Dr.Jekyll and Mr.HydeAuthor: Robert Louis StevensonThis book was titled "The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde" as its original. It is a novella written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson first published in 1886. This novella is about a London lawyer Mr. Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and the misanthropic man Edward Hyde. Dr Jekyll has discovered the ultimate drug. A chemical that can turn him into something else. Suddenly, he can unleash his deepest cruelties in the guise of the sinister Hyde. Transforming himself at will, he roams the streets of fog-bound London as his monstrous alter-ego. It seems he is master of his fate. It seems he is in complete control. But soon he discovers that his double life comes at a hideous price. With the incessant conversion, Dr Jekyll finds himself losing his own prime of life over the hand of Mr Hyde. He begins to overcommit the therapy to help him hold the fate and it only makes him weaker coram the other face in his heart. To defeat his last despair, the proud doctor ends up this disaster in a raging flame. The work is known for its vivid portrayal of the psychopathology of a split personality; in mainstream culture the very phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" has come to signify wild or polar behaviour.First time reading this book gave me a hard time understanding what was happening in the book. There were lots of things happened and it was not that easy to see the relevance between each other as the author had been trying hard to leave only ambiguous trails. However, this feeling of tasting the desire of discovery binds me to the book. As the story going further, the feeling of freashness slowly faded away, however another thing make me wonder -- as to a human live with the fierce conflict of both good and evil sides, what would be his end. To be exact, what would he do in the continuing story and what would he become in the end of this tragedy. And for once, is this split fo humanity a representation of the nature of human-being, a special case that created by literature or somehing that warns us to look under our shields. For centuries, people are dedicating on erasing the bad side of any form in this world. Henry Jekyll is obviously a successful example in the human society. He is smart, handsome, merciful and well-educated. He is nearly prefection. Though it's said that every prefection has its blemish, this time, it is not the case. When Dr.Jekyll drunk his potion first time and became Mr.Hyde, there were enough time to stop the transforming and get himself under control by using the antidote. And he didn't do anything to stop for he wanted to taste a different power, even if the power is tought to be evil in the human knowledge, to fill a gap in his prefect life. Comparing to the brilliant Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde is ugly, cruel and original wild. The dark Hyde is more like uncivilized human while Jekyll represent the civilized people. Civilization is always the sign of evolution. Then here comes a question: Why the evolved admire the unevolved?Either in old and modern time, this phenomenon seems like a common sight. There has always been crimes come from the best educational system. We can understand crimes that commited by people who are from a lower class or who have psychic trauma in their early age, but how can we explain the ones commited by those who have a wonderful life. Some say that those people are simplely freak and they just have the eagerness to do it. I agree that they have the eagerness, then where this eagerness comes from. In my opinion, maybe they have a lack of the unprefection. Weimage a theoretical eternal stabile status to be the end of any evolutionary system and we forget that this status is unstabile itself for it loses its match on the other side of libration. Once a side of the seesaw is lost, the other must go and find the balance at any cost. That is the same thing happened to Dr.Jekyll -- to find the balance of life and to see what it is like. So Mr.Hyde may be used by Dr.Jekyll as the tool to recognize the world and himself, merely, Hyde grabs the chance and gets his control over Dr. Jekyll. To conclude, nothing will be exist alone in this universe and nothing can be. There is a saying that light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong; no matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.。

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. HydeShort SummaryAt the book's opening, two men, Mr. Utterson and his cousin Mr. Richard Enfield, are leisurely walking through London. Initially silent, the men pass a mysterious basement cellar door, and Mr. Enfield launches into a story about a strange occurrence related to the door. Late one night, while on his way home, Enfield chanced upon a deformed, short man who trampled a girl in the street on her way to fetch a doctor. The girl's family and Mr. Enfield catch the mysterious man and instead of getting the police, decide to force him to give the girl's family money. Agreeable to this compromise, the mysterious man disappears into the cellar door and returns with a check bearing not his own name, but that of the respectable Dr. Jekyll. Although Enfield assumed the check would be a forgery, it proves to be legitimate. After hearing the story, Utterson returns to his home where he removes his friend and client Dr. Henry Jekyll's mysterious will, which Jekyll recently filed. The will states that in case of Dr. Jekyll's death, his substantial estate will pass to Mr. Edward Hyde, whom Utterson has never met and whom he assumes is the mysterious man in Enfield's story. Even stranger, the will states that in case of Jekyll's disappearance formore than three months, Hyde will assume Jekyll's estate without delay. Utterson also realizes that the mysterious door is connected, in an L shaped way, to Jekyll's home. Utterson concludes that Hyde is blackmailing Jekyll and resolves to seek the man out to understand why. After tracking the man down, Hyde is initially civil but turns angry when Utterson extends the conversation, probing into his relationship with Dr. Jekyll. One year later, Edward Hyde brutally murders Sir Danvers Carew by beating him to death with a cane. With help from Utterson, the police find Hyde's apartment ransacked and all papers burned. After leaving, Utterson proceeds to Jekyll's and confronts him for harboring a murder. Jekyll claims that he is done with Hyde forever and that their relationship is terminated. Jekyll does, however, have a farewell note from Hyde. Utterson examines the note and his clerk, Mr. Guest, later discovers that the handwriting, although slightly altered, matches a dinner invitation written by Dr. Jekyll. Angrily, Utterson assumes that Jekyll has forged a letter for a murderer.More time passes, and we learn that although Hyde has not been located, Dr. Jekyll has become increasingly social, returning to his pre-Hyde days of friendly meetings and intellectual gatherings. One day, Uttersonattends a dinner party at Jekyll's home and sees Dr. Lanyon there. Shortly thereafter, Jekyll secludes himself and Dr. Lanyon falls severely ill due to "shock" and dies. After his death, Dr. Lanyon leaves Utterson a letter instructing him only to read it after Dr. Jekyll's death or disappearance. Some time after these mysterious events, Enfield and Utterson again walk by the mysterious door and get a rare glimpse at Dr. Jekyll, who is sitting by a window in the apartment. The men have a brief conversation, but Jekyll abruptly shuts the window as he begins to suffer what appears to be a seizure. Enfield and Utterson are struck by the disturbing appearance of Jekyll's face as he withdraws from view.About a week later, Richard Poole, Jekyll's faithful butler, approaches Utterson. Poole reports that Jekyll has locked himself in his cabinet and strange sounds, including crying and pacing are all that have been emanating from the room. The only communication that Poole has received from Jekyll consists of letters desperately asking for a specific type of medicine. Utterson agrees to assist and follows Poole to Jekyll's house. The two men break down the door to the room where Jekyll has hidden himself. They find Hyde's dead body and assume he committed suicide immediately before they entered the room. They ransack the area looking for Jekyll's body or evidence of his death, but are unsuccessful. In the laboratory, the men discover a large envelope addressed to Mr.Utterson. Inside, Jekyll urges Utterson to read the package from Lanyon and if he wishes to know more, read the further description Jekyll provides within the envelope.Utterson reads Lanyon's narrative. The letter begins with a description of a strange letter Lanyon received from Henry Jekyll, the night after a dinner party at Jekyll's residence. The letter urges Lanyon to go to Jekyll's house and fetch a certain drawer with specific contents from the laboratory. Afterwards, a messenger will come to Lanyon's house in Jekyll's stead to recover these items, which include powder, a phial, and a paper book. Lanyon follows the instructions thinking that Jekyll has lost his mind. Mr. Hyde appears at the specified time, looking particularly strange, dressed in clothes far too large for him. Lanyon gives Hyde the ingredients. Hyde then asks Lanyon whether or not he would like to see the end result of his errand. Lanyon is curious and agrees. Hyde mixes the ingredients into a potion, drinks it, and transforms into Dr. Jekyll as an astounded Lanyon observes. Lanyon is deeply affected by this shock and the pure evilness of Jekyll, brings on his subsequent illness and death. After reading Dr. Lanyon's account, Utterson reads Jekyll's own description of his failed experiment. Jekyll believed that the soul is madeup of two separate distinctions: good and evil. These two separate beings live in continuous and inherent conflict with each other. Slowly, Jekyll begins an experiment where he attempts to completely differentiate these two aspects of human nature. Jekyll experiments extensively and then makes two potions. One transforms him into Edward Hyde, and the second transforms him back into Henry Jekyll. This amazingly successful experiment begins Jekyll's extensive exploration of his other self, a man entirely comfortably in morally corrupt behavior, whom he eventually names Edward Hyde. For some months, this behavior continues until Jekyll, "had gone to bed Henry Jekyll, [and] had awakened Edward Hyde." Jekyll was alarmed that he transformed into Edward Hyde without the assistance of the potion, and became concerned that the character of Hyde might irrevocably take over. Concerned that he had overstepped his bounds, Jekyll chose to give up the freedom of Hyde and for two months maintained the identity of Dr. Jekyll. Unfortunately, he was tortured with Hyde's longing to freely take part in evil doings, and he once again took the potion. During this transformation, Hyde brutally murdered Carew. Because of the manhunt for Hyde, Jekyll swore off ever again making the transformation and set out to try to remedy the evil inside of him.Unfortunately, at this point Jekyll had given too much power to his evil side. Hyde was an irrevocable part of Jekyll's character, and the many transformations and evil behaviors only strengthened Hyde's power. One night, while contemplating Hyde's deeds, Jekyll spontaneously transformed into Edward Hyde. Because his dual identity was a secret to all members in his house, he realized he could not walk through his house to the laboratory to retrieve the potion's ingredients. Therefore, he sent the urgent letter to Dr. Lanyon. After successfully turning back into Dr. Jekyll, he went home once again but every time he fell asleep, he reverted to Mr. Hyde. Soon, his potions failed to work, even at double strength, and he ran out of the specific medicine needed. While living in the cabinet apartment and not allowing any of his servants to see him, Hyde launches a desperate but unsuccessful search across London for the potion ingredients. When Poole and Utterson finally break into the room, Hyde kills himself, thus finally releasing both Jekyll and Hyde.。

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Summary —Chapter 2: “Search for Mr. Hyde”Utterson, prompted by his conversation with Enfield, goes home to study a will that he drew up for his close friend Dr. Jekyll. It states that in the event of the death or disappearance of Jekyll, all of his property should be given over immediately to a Mr. Edward Hyde. This strange will had long troubled Utterson, but now that he has heard something of Hyde’s behavior, he becomes more upset and feels convinced that Hyde has some peculiar power over Jekyll. Seeking to unravel the mystery, he pays a visit to Dr. Lanyon, a friend of Jekyll’s. But Lanyon has never heard of Hyde and has fallen out of communication with Jekyll as a result of a professional dispute. Lanyon refers to Jekyll’s most recent line of rese arch as “unscientific balderdash.”Later that night, Utterson is haunted by nightmares in which a faceless man runs down a small child and in which the same terrifying, faceless figure stands beside Jekyll’s bed and commands him to rise. Soon, Utterson begins to spend time around the run-down building where Enfield saw Hyde enter, in the hopes of catching a glimpse of Hyde. Hyde, a small young man, finally appears, and Utterson approaches him. Utterson introduces himself as a friend of Henry Jekyll. Hyde, keeping his head down, returns his greetings. He asks Hyde to show him his face, so that he will know him if he sees him again; Hyde complies, and, like Enfield before him, Utterson feels appalled and horrified yet cannot pinpoint exactly what makes Hyde so ugly. Hyde then offers Utterson his address, which the lawyer interprets as a sign that Hyde eagerly anticipates the death of Jekyll and the execution of his will. After this encounter, Utterson pays a visit to Jekyll. At this point, we learn what Utterson himself has known all along: namely, that therun-down building that Hyde frequents is actually a laboratory attached to Jekyll’s well-kept townhouse, which faces outward on a parallel street. Utterson is admitted into Jekyll’s home by Jekyll’sbutler, Mr. Poole, but Jekyll is not at home. Poole tells Utterson that Hyde has a key to the laboratory and that all the servants have orders to obey Hyde. The lawyer heads home, worrying about his friend. He assumes Hyde is blackmailing Jekyll, perhaps for some wrongdoings that Jekyll committed in his youth.Summary —Chapter 3: “Dr. Jekyll Was Quite at Ease”Two weeks later, Jekyll throws a well-attended dinner party. Utterson stays late so that the two men can speak privately. Utterson mentions the will, and Jekyll begins to make a joke about it, but he turns pale when Utterson tells him that he has been “learning something of young Hyde.” Jekyll explains that the situation with Hyde is exceptional and cannot be solved by talking. He also insists that “the moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr. Hyde.” But Jekyll emphasizes the great interest he currently takes in Hyde and his desire to continue to provide for him. He makes Utterson promise that he will carry out his will and testament.Analysis — Chapters 2–3Utterson behaves here like an amateur detective, as he does throughout the rest of the novel. However, unlike most detectives, he faces a gulf between what seems to be the factual evidence of the case and the supernatural reality behind it. This gulf is apparent in Utterson’s reading of the will, for instance. On the face of it, Jekyll’s stipulation that all his property be handed over to Hyde and his later horror at the thought of Utterson “learning something of young Hyde” seem to point squarely at blackmail of some sort. Of course, Utterson never imagines the situation that lies behind these behaviors. Similarly, the will’s reference to “death or disappearance” (emphasis added) makes Utterson immediately think of the possibility of murder. The idea that Jekyll could literally transform himself into another and thereby disappear simply does not occur to Utterson, as it would notoccur to any rational person. Utterson’s failure to detect the truth does not demonstrate any failure in logic. However, Stevenson does contrive to have his hardheaded lawyer access the dark supernatural undercurrents at work in the case of Jekyll and Hyde—if only in a limited way. Stevenson enlightens Utterson through the use of the dream sequence. In Utterson’s dreams, the faceless figur e of Hyde stalks through the city: “if at any time [Utterson] dozed over,” the author writes, “it was but to see [Hyde] glide more stealthily through sleeping houses, or move the more swiftly … through wider labyrinths of lamp-lighted city, and at everyst reet corner crush a child and leave her screaming.” In Utterson’s dreams, then, Hyde appears ubiquitous, permeating the city with his dark nature and his crimes. This idea of Hyde as a universal presence suggests that this faceless figure, crushing children and standing by Jekyll’s bed, symbolizes all the secret sins that lurk beneath the surface of respectable London. This notion of hidden crimes recurs throughout the novel. It is significant that Stevenson never gives us any details of Jekyll’s indiscreti ons prior to his creation of Hyde, nor of Hyde’s wicked, dissipated habits. The crimes remain shrouded in mystery; to explain them in rational language would strip them of their supernatural and eerie quality.。

The strange of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
British lawyer Mr. Utterson had proof. Hyde was a foul, twisted, shrunken creature who had brutally stomped a little girl and beaten an old man to death--for no reason. Hyde left a trail of evil across London; the mere sight of him made stranger violent with fear and disgust... But Hyde was Dr. Jekyll‘s sole heir. And that made no sense at all. Henry Jekyll was the kindest, most civil, most respected man in England. What power could a monster like Hyde hold over Jekyll’s soul? Utterson vowed to solve the mystery, and free his friend from Hyde‘s clutches...until his hunt led to a horror beyond blackmail, beyond extortion; to a secret so shocking, so sickening, so personal--That the sheer terror of the truth could drive men mad...
