Sedimentaryrocks dating back to Earth’s earliest days are rar e. Some of the oldest known are about three and a half billion years old.StromatolitesIn these very old rocks, paleontologists have found something that looked familiar. Certain communities of microbes can form layered, rock-like mounds called stromatolites. Stromatolites grow in shallow bodies of water in many places around the world. In the 1980′s paleontologists found the remains of ancient stromatolites in 3.5 billion year old sedimentary rocks.Besides stromatolites, possible microscopic fossils have been found in rocks up to 3.5 billion years old. After all, the more time parents spend working, the less time and energy they have to plan and prepare healthful meals.Until recently, most studies have focused on the role of working mothers. Now, a study that looks at the family as a whole, and at the role of fathers in particular, adds a new wrinkle to the relationship between work stress and family nutrition. Moms’ work related stress is still a central factor in how well families eat because they typically do most of the food shopping and cooking. But dad’s work related stress has a large impact, too. The study found that when mom or dad experience high levels of work related stress, their families are eating one-and-a-half fewer family meals per week, and the parents themselves report eating fewer fruits and vegetables, more fast food, and are less likely to eat breakfast regularly.It’s worth noting that the study looked mainly at low income families who belonged to ethnic or minority groups, so the findings don’t necessarily apply directly to other types of families. But the implications are wide ranging.When it comes to family nutrition, the researchers say, the entire family, not just moms, plays a role even kids. Teaching kids, especially teenagers, to help with grocery shopping and to cook actual meals, instead of just popping a frozen pizza in the microwave, could be an important piece of the puzzle in helping families improve their eating habits.。

Okay, so there’s an asteroid heading toward the Earth. What do we do? Does our future really rest in the hands of Hollywood, Bruce Willis and a ragtag team of miners like in the movie Armageddon?
Early Warning
Sure, we could wait until danger is imminent and then hope that a well placed nuclear explosion would shatter or deflect the monster asteroid threatening humanity, but is this our only option? The answer is that it depends on how big the asteroid is, how far away it is, and How much time we have before impact?
Because there’s lots of space debris out there, odds are that the threatening object won’t be one of the giant Earth-destroying asteroids that NASA is already tracking, but a smaller meteoroid capable of causing regional devastation.
With enough warning, though, we could crash a robotic
spacecraft into the object and change its trajectory so that it’ll sail by Earth. We know we have the technology for this, because NASA has already successfully rammed a spacecraft into a comet to study the comet’s composition.
Deflection
There are also rare instances when space objects pass close by several years before returning on a collision course with Earth. Here even a tiny change in trajectory during the first pass would result in big payoff later. In these cases, we could use a spacecraft’s mass and gravitational field to nudge the space object off course without shattering it and creating potentially dangerous fragments.
Obviously, early warning is key, which is why NASA has issued a grand challenge to scientists in various disciplines, institutions and agencies to work together to uncover ways of detecting, characterizing and interacting with asteroids. Because when it comes to the future of the Earth, Bruce Willis can only do so much.
