Unit 1 LOVE AND CARE
The tiny nun in the cotton habit, who founded in the slums of Calcutta an order that grew into an international movement for the care of the sick, the dying, and the outcast, proved that faith could indeed move mountains. Millions revered and venerated her as a saint.
Mother Teresa’s mission was specifically to “the poorest of the poor” because she believed that the worst poverty of all was to reject a human soul in need. Those who visited the homes she established in the worst slums of Calcutta emerged overwhelmed by the love and cheerfulness that permeated the wards, binging hope to the abandoned and dignity to the dying.
Unit 2 ARTS AND MUSIC
Furthermore, because of my heavy Asian art background, it has been an immense obstacle for me to transform most of my concepts of Eastern art into an American graphic point of view in such a short period of time. Therefore, I become frustrated when my instructor tells me not only to participate more in the class but also to think more conceptually. My enthusiasm and curiosity about seeing other students’ work has diminished dramatically, like the cooling of a hot kettle. I feel completely out of place during project critiques in my studio classes. I do not know how to appreciate my classmates’ incredible designs, which are heavy with Western graphic notions.
Unit 3 PERSONAL HEROES
I’m still very much an optimist, and I believe that progress on even the world’s toughest problems is possible ——and it’s happening every day. We’re seeing new drugs for deadly diseases, new diagnostic tools, and new attention paid to the health problems in the developing world.
I’m excited by the possibilities I see for medicine, for education and, of course, for technology. And I believe that through our natural inventiveness, creativity and willingness to solve tough problems, we’re going to make some amazing achievements in all these areas in my lifetime.
Unit 4 CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLANNING
That sort of sociability also helps broaden scientists beyond their basic field ——an important part of modern science.“You need to keep in touch with many of the contiguous fields,”he says, “because you never know when a good idea will come out that you can apply.”
According to Lederman, the thrill of scientific discovery is still part of his experience. “When you know something that you’re the only one to know ——and there are 4 or 5 billion people on the planet, and it’s so profound that it will affect all of their lives at some point ——that’s something science can do. And there’s nothing else I know of that can do that.”
Unit 5 THE SPIRIT OF COMPETITION
When interviewed afterwards, Jody-Anne said that there were several words in the bee that she did not know how to spell, but that“God gave me the words that I knew.”Her advice to other spellers?“Trust God, work hard, and never lose sight of your goal.”Coach Archer agrees. “We believe that inspiration plus perspiration is a marvelous formula,” he says.
One of her four sisters, Janice, was also an inspiration. She was the 1990 All-Island Spelling Champ of Jamaica.“She was the one who encouraged me to enter and helped me, too,”says
