I don't think comic book "collector" really applies to me at all. I’m probably more of a comic book "appreciator". My interest has always been in what can be accomplished with the medium of " visual story-telling".I'm not sure exactly where this interest of mine came from. I do know that as a child, comic books allowed me to improve my re ading skills. “The Mighty Thor" helped me develop an interest in old legends, and “Challengers of the Unknown" got me crazy a bout science fiction. The combination of words and pictures wa s a perfect springboard for my childhood imagination. How does one learn to appreciate comic book art? There is a classic example that sheds quite a bit of light on the subject. Writer Scott Macloud just explains what makes a comic book stand out in his best selling book Understanding Comics. The book, first published in 1994, has been translated into 13 la nguages and is practically a bible for students studying graphicillustration (图示说明) in novels. On the internet there are some cool comic book sites to be foun d—hundreds and hundreds of them as a matter of fact. More than a few are dedicated to super heroes and the like. But there are some choice sites that I would visit, because they provide some great resources that discuss the comic book as an art form. No teworthy among them is a great article and interview at www. rc harvey. corn, which discusses the impact of several artists and writers in the field.I have a huge admiration for anyone who can produce comic st ories that can make readers think, laugh and cry. Maybe make t hem dream.Check it out. Spend two dollars on a comic book and read it wit h your children. Or better yet, search out some of the more “adu lt" tides and read it for yourself. You may find yourself enjoying what you see and read. You may even find yourself wanting mo re.1. What does the author mainly intend to talk about in Paragraph 2?A. Influence of comic books on reading in childhood.to improve one's reading skills.C. Subjects of comic books.D. Popularity of two comic books.

2014全国高考汇编阅读之科普知识类一(2014安徽卷)BRecordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)-either recorded or real-may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer's crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy Played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.60.
2014高考英语阅读理解抓分训练精品〔44〕与答案C5[2013·广东卷] DWhile Jennifer was at home taking an online exam for her business law class, a monitor(监控器)a few hundred miles away was watching her every move.Using a web camera equipped in Jennifer's Los Angeles apartment, the monitor in Phoenix tracked how frequently her eyes moved from the computer screen and listened for the secret sounds of a possible helper in the room. Her Internet access was locked—remotely—to prevent Internet searches, and her typing style was analyzed to make sure she was who she said she was: Did she enter her student number at the same speed as she had in the past? Or was she slowing down?In the battle against cheating, this is the cutting_edge and a key to encourage honesty in the booming field of online education. The technology gives trust to the entire system, to the institution and to online education in general. Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams and diplomas are valid—that students haven't just searched the Internet to get the right answers.Although online classes have existed for more than a decade, the concern over cheating has become sharper in the last year with the growth of “open online courses.〞 Private colleges, public universities and corporations are jumping into the online education field, spending millions of dollars to attract potential students, while also taking steps to help guarantee honesty at a distance.Aside from the web cameras, a number of other high-tech methods are becoming increasingly popular. Among them are programs that check students' identities using personal information, such as the telephone numbers they once used.Other programs can produce unique exams by drawing on a large list of questions and can recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test questions are answered at the same speed as easy ones. As in many university classes, term papersare scanned against some large Internet data banks for cheating.41.Why was Jennifer watched in an online exam?A.To correct her typing mistakes.B.To find her secrets in the room.C.To prevent her from slowing down.D.To keep her from dishonest behaviors.42.The underlined expression cutting edge in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.A.advanced techniqueB.sharpening toolC.effective ruleD.dividing line43.For Internet universities, exams and diplomas will be valid if ________.A.they can attract potential studentsB.they can defeat academic cheatingC.they offer students online helpD.they offer many online courses44.Some programs can find out possible cheaters by ________.A.checking the question answering speedB.producing a large number of questionsC.scanning the Internet test questionsD.giving difficult test questions45.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?A.The Advantages of Online ExamsB.The High-tech Methods in Online CoursesC.The Fight Against Cheating in Online EducationD.The War Against the Booming of Online Education【要点综述】开放网络教学为人们的知识升级打开了便捷之门,如何保证其教育和学习的质量,防止考试时作弊,现在科技手段在发挥着重要的作用……41.D 推理判断题。

3AIn an ideal world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time—consuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.Europe, on the whole, has the world’s most restrictive laws on animal experiments. Even so, its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1. 1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive data than America. Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals’lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer. Europe’s new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted.1. What is the main idea of this passage?A. The success of animal experiments should be ensured.B. A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced.C. Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals.D. Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other.2. Which of the following statements is TRUE about animals used in the lab?A. America uses only about 1. 1 million lab animals per year.B. Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all.C. Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does.D. Japan has less comprehensive data on the number of lab animals used each year.3. Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments?A. Statistical studies.B. Computer models.C. DNA planted in animals.D. Tissue from dead animals.4. What usually happens to unsuccessful animal experiments?A. They are not revealed to the public.B. They are made into teaching materials.C. They are collected for future publication.D. They are not removed from the research topic list.BAs a boy growing up in India, I had longed to travel abroad. I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s, with great interest. My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium, Netherlands and West Germany.I have vivid memories even today of going to Mumbai airport at night all excited about finally going abroad. I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew. The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me, who is otherwise scared of flying. After spending almost two weeks in Europe, we took the Lufthansa airport express from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt airport, for our return flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine(莱茵河), it was simply an unforgettable experience. I was in a somber mood on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.Being the first airline to take me overseas, Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart. Even today, I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline. Flying, in general, for me, has always been an ordeal(terrible and painful experience). Flying on Lufthansa, however, is something I always have and always will look forward to.5. Which country does the author live in now?A. India.B. Canada.C. Belgium.D. Germany.6. Whic h of the following is TRUE about the author’s trip to Europe in 1998?A. The author traveled with one of his parents.B. Both their going and return are by air.C. They traveled in spring that year.D. They stayed in Europe for nearly two months.7. It can be inferred from the passage that Lufthansa is .A. a city in IndiaB. a city in EuropeC. an airline companyD. a travel agency8. The underlined word“sombre”in the 4th paragraph probably means“”.A. happyB. sadC. angryD. enjoyableCWhile students in Hainan are quite used to clear skies, Beijing teenagers are not so lucky. As another warm winter approaches, the city can expect the normal clouds of smoke caused by air pollution. But things may start to improve soon. The government is co-operating with a US-based environmental protection agency to update existing buses and trucks with clean fuel technology. The new technology could reduce air pollutants in existing diesel engines(柴油机)by 40 percent. The programme will begin by testing buses in Beijing to see if the technology can be applied to them.“We encourage the development of public transports. But at the same time we need to reduce pollution from them, ”said an official.Efforts ar e being made to improve the capital’s environment with tighter controls on emissions(排放). Some heavily polluting factories and construction sites, such as those owned by the steel giant Shougang Group, have been asked to cut production in November and December or be closed.Beijing was the third polluted city in the world at the end of last century, according to the UN. But thanks to recent measures, the capital has made some progress. Last year 224 clear days were rated as having good air quality. In 1998 the air quality index(指数)gave just 100 days as good.“I am glad to see an improvement, ”said a senior 1 boy living in the northwest of Beijing. “Compared to other places, the air quality of Beijing is still worrying though. I hate pollution. Once I was riding my bike in the morning when I almost had a traffic accident because I couldn’t see a car only metres away from me in fog. ”In early October, the skies were covered by such a thick fog that a display show by the visiting French Air Force was called off.Rapid development, industry, traffic fumes and sandstorms from the desert allcontribute to the city’s bad air.9.
(18)Passage Fourteen (Pageants)Pageants are usually conceived on a fairly large scale, often under the auspices of some local or civic authority or at any rate in connection with local groups of some kind。
This sometimes means that there is an allocation of funds available for the purpose of mounting the production, though unfortunately this will usually be found to be on the meager side and much ingenuity will have to be used to stretch it so that all performers can be adequately clothed. Most pageants have a historical flavour as they usually come about through the celebration of the anniversary of some event of historic importance, or the life or death of some local worthy. Research among archives and books in the public library will probably prove very useful and produce some workable ideas which will give the production an especially local flavour。
