Millions of Americans take large amounts of vitamin C pills every day because they believe the vitamin will help them stay healthy. However, a new study says vitamin C may help produce substances that can damage DNA. Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania experimented with vitamin C in test tubes. They studied the effects of vitamin C on a substance produced in the body from fat. That substance is called hydro-peroxide(过氧化氢物), which can be changed in a cell into substances that can damage DNA. The scientists found that vitamin C easily changed the hydro-peroxide into the gene-damaging poisons. Such damage is the first step toward developing cancer. However, the scientists say the study does not mean that vitamin C causes cancer. They say it is well-known that vitamin C is important for human health, but people can get enough vitamin C in the foods they eat. Earlier studies have shown that eating a lot of fruits, vegetables and grains can reduce the chance of developing both heart disease and cancer. Other researchers agree that the latest study is important in understanding the chemistry of vitamin C. But they say the study did not involve people. The vitamin C was tested in the laboratory only. They think the results might be different in living cells.Mark Levine is a vitamin C expert who questions whether a similar study in people would produce the same results. He also says people should get their vitamin C in food instead of taking huge amounts in pills to stay healthy, and research does not support taking a lot of vitamin C.The United States government says people should get about eighty milligrams of vitamin C each day in the foods they eat. Studies have shown that the body cannot use more than two hundred milligrams of vitamin C each day. 3. In 1924, a Mexican philosopher wrote a book dreaming of the possibility that, in the future, all races on the planet would merge into one type of man. This of man is being borne in Los Angeles, in the cultural sense if not the anthropological (a. A vast mosaic (n.拼盘) of different races, cultures, religions, and moral habits are working toward one common aim. From the perspective of a world submerged in religious, ethnic, and racial conflict, this harmonious cooperation is something unbelievable. It is truly striking. What is common aim that harmonizes competing cultures in one place? It is not only the better living standard. What attracts immigrants to America is the essential characteristic of American culture: the chance to try. There is a combination of two things that are important: culture and space. The culture allows you to try to be somebody——to find yourself, your place, your status. And there is space not only in a geographical sense, but in the sense of opportunity, of social mobility. In societies that are in crisis or are stagnant(a.停滞的)——or even are stable ——there is no chance to try. If the immigrant to America at first fails, he always thinks, “I will try again.”If he had failed in the old society, he would be discouraged and pessimistic, accepting the place that was given to him. In America, he’s thinking, “I will have another chance, I will try again.” That keeps him going.

4.单选题On October 11th, 1994, John Forbes Nash, Jr. won the Nobel Prize for pioneering work in game theory.Nash began his Ph.D. at Princeton in 1948 when he was just 20. While he was still only 21, lie wrote a 27-page doctoral dissertation on game theory (博弈论)——the mathematics of competition. The great John von Neuman, then at Princeton, had treated win-lose competitions. Now Nash showed how to construct mathematical situations in which both sides won. He found stable situations where no person continues to profit from competition.Nash introduced something totally new. And he drew the attention of theoretical economists. They turned game theory into a tool. This young genius had succeeded. He went on to MIT and for eight years greatly impressed the mathematical world. He worked in economics. He even invented the game of Hex, marketed by parker Brothers. He married in 1957. New York Times writer Silvia Nasar tells how Fortune Magazine singled him out in July 1958 as America's brilliant young star of the “new mathematics”. Everything was going smoothly. Then, disaster! Mental illness overtook him. He’d once astonished mathematicians with his unlikely results. Now his results stopped making sense, and the dividing line wasn’t clear at first. He began looking for secret messages in numbers.Psychologists of the 1950s claimed that his wife’s pregnancy had tipped him over the edge. Nice thing to lay on a woman already stressed to the edge by her husband’s collapse! The marriage ended, but she housed him, back in Princeton. For 25 years, mental illness controlled John Nash. It was in the mid-1980s that Nash at last learned to manage his illness and, once again, he could do mathematics. Meanwhile, game theory had become a staple tool of business and economics. All the writing in that field points back to Nash's seminal work. Finally, Nash received the Nobel Prize in economics.1.Nash won the Nobel Prize().2.The word “They” (Para.3) refers to().3.Which of the following statements is true?4.Why do you think Nash made his achievement in the field of mathematics but was honored with the Nobel Prize for economics instead?5.The purpose of this article might be(). A.for pioneering work in establishing a theoryB.for combining mathematics with economicsC.for greatly impressing the mathematical world for 8 yearsD.for his merit问题2选项A.theoretical economistsB.Nash and his colleaguesC.Nash and other scientistspetitors问题3选项A.Nash’s wife divorced him, but gave him a house as a gift.B.Nash’s wife agreed that her pregnancy contributed to Nash’s mental collapse.C.The author thinks it’s right to blame Nash’s wife for his mental collapse.D.The author thinks it’s unfair to blame Nash’s wife for his mental collapse. A.Because his game theory drew the attention of theoretical economists.B.Because his game theory has become a staple tool of business and economics.C.Because he turned his game theory into a tool.D.Because Nash was an economist. A.to tell a story of a mathematics geniusB.to depict a mathematics geniusC.to tell the readers about John Forbes Nash. Marketing is important to organizations and consumers alike. It touches the lives of all members of society. All the goods and services you buy, the stores where you shop and the radio and TV programs paid for by advertising are there because of marketing. Each of you has been involved in marketing activities at one time or another. Perhaps you have tried to sell a used textbook back to the campus book store or to convince your parents to finance a spring vacation. You may not have known it at the time, but you were performing marketing activities. Marketing often has special importance for students. Many of you will work in marketing——whether in sales, retailing, advertising, or another field----in a for-profit firm or a nonprofit organization. Through this chapter you will find some information in different areas of marketing—in sales, advertising, marketing concept, marketing mix, marketing research, understanding buyer behavior, market segmentation(细分)and other areas. What does a business firm do in our economy? Reduced to basics, businesses have two major functions: production of goods or creation of services and marketing those goods and services. To be successful in today’s competitive marketplace, people in business realize that they must first determi ne people’s needs and wants, and then produce goods and services to satisfy them. A company, whether it is Ford Motor Company or a small retailer, is in business to create want-satisfying goods and services for its customers. Goods and services that do not satisfy consumers are forced out from the market, since consumers do not buy them.【答案】市场营销对组织来说很重要,对于消费者来说也同样重要。

2.单选题Global warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths and about $125 billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general. The report, to be released Friday analyzed data and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economics trends. It found that human-influenced climate changes was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition(营养不良)and heat-related health problems. But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.Roger Pielke Jr., a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum’s report was “a methodological embarrassment” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable regions. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention”. But the report, he said, “will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed(有瑕疵的)”. However, Soren Anderasen, a social scientist at Dahl berg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty. In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards, while still curbing the emissions of the heat trapping gases. Learning a foreign language was one of the most difficult yet most rewarding experiences of my life. It not only taught me the value of hard work, but also gave me insights into another culture, and my mind was opened to new ways of seeing things. The most wonderful result of having learned a foreign language was that I could communicate with many more people than before. Talking with people is one of my favorite activities, so being able to speak a new language lets me meet new people, participate in conversations, and form new, unforgettable friendships. Now that I speak a foreign language, instead of staring into space when English is being spoken, I can participate and make friends. I am able to reach out to others and bridge the gap between my language and culture and theirs. Although I still made many mistakes and was continually learning, I had finally reaped the benefits of all that hard work.4.单选题You’ll have to change your ()of life now that you have got a baby.问题1选项A.formB.moldC.moodD.mode【答案】D【解析】考查名词辨析。

Whether the eyes are “the windows of the soul” is debatable, that they are intensely important in interpersonal communication is fact. During the first two months of a baby’s life, the stimulus that produces a smile is a pair of eyes. The eyes need not be real: a mask with two dots will produce a smile. Significantly, a real human face with eyes covered then the face will not motivate a smile, nor will the sight of only one eye then the face is presented in profile. This attraction to eyes as opposed to the nose or mouth continues as the baby matures. In one study, when American four-year-olds were asked to draw people. 75 percent of them drew people with mouths, but 99 percent of them drew people with eyes. In Japan, however, where babies are carried on the ir mother’s back, infants to not acquire as much attachment to eyes as they do in other cultures. As a result, Japanese adults make little use of the face either to encode or decode meaning. In fact, Argyle reveals that the “proper place to focus one’s gaz e during a conversation in Japan is on the neck of one's conversation partner’.The role of eye contact in a conversational exchange between two Americans is well defined: speakers make contact with the eyes of their listener for about one second, then glance away as they talk; in a few moments they re-establish eye contact with the listener or reassure themselves that their audience is still attentive, then shift their gaze away once more. Listeners, meanwhile, keep their eyes on the face of the speaker, allowing themselves-to glance away only briefly. It is important that they be looking at the speaker at the precise moment when the speaker reestablishes eye contact; if they are not looking, at the speaker assumes that they are disinterested and either will pause until eye contact is resumed or will terminate the conversation. Just how critical this eye maneuvering is to the maintenance of conversational flow becomes evident when two speakers are wearing dark glasses: there may be a sort of traffic jam of words caused by interruption, false starts, and unpredictable pauses.1.The author is convinced that the eyes are().2.Babies will not be stimulated to smile by a person().3.According to the passage, the Japanese fix their gaze on their conversation partner’ neck because().4.According to the passage, a conversation between two Americans may break down due to ().5.To keep a conversation flowing smoothly, it is better for the participants(). A.something through which one can see a person’s inner worldB.of extreme importance in expressing feelings and exchanging ideasC.of considerable significance in making conversations interestingD.something the value of which is largely a matter of long debate问题2选项A.whose front view is fully perceivedB.whose face is covered with a maskC.whose face is seen from the sideD.whose face is free of any covering问题3选项A.they don't like to keep their eyes on the face of the speakerB.they don’t how to communicate through eye contactC.they don’t think it polite to have eye contactD.they didn’t have much opportunity to communicate through eye contact in babyhood问题4选项A.one temporarily glancing away from the otherB.eye contact of more than one secondC.improperly-timed ceasing of eye contactD.constant adjustment of eye contact问题5选项A.not to wear dark glassesB.not to make any interruptionsC.not to glance away from each otherD.not to make unpredictable paused【答案】第1题:B第2题:C第3题:D第4题:C第5题:A【解析】第1题:主旨大意题。

例如:agree,acknowledge,assert,see,insist,according to,find,think,believe,show,point out,content,acclaim,say等4)特殊标点符号,有的表示具体说明、有表解释、有表反义等等,均有或强或弱的强调意味,主要的特殊标点符号有:——、()、“”等。
f、含有绝对化的词语,如only,always,never,all,everything,anything,everywhere,everybody,nobody。
