Lateral discontinuities also have been distinguishedand mapped through seismic tomography but shall not be discussed here.Inner core: 1.7% of the Earth's mass; depth of 5,150-6,370 kilometers (3,219- 3,981 miles)The inner core is solid and unattached to the mantle, suspended in the moltenouter core. It is believed to have solidified as a result of pressure-freezing which occurs to most liquids when temperature decreases or pressure increases.Outer core: 30.8% of Earth's mass; depth of 2,890-5,150 kilometers (1,806 - 3,219 miles)The outer core is a hot, electrically conducting liquid within which convective motion occurs. This conductive layer combines with Earth's rotation to create adynamo effect that maintains a system of electrical currents known as the Earth'smagnetic field. It is also responsible for the subtle jerking of Earth's rotation. This layer is not as dense as pure molten iron, which indicates the presence oflighter elements. Scientists suspect that about 10% of the layer is composed ofsulfur and/or oxygen because these elements are abundant in the cosmos and dissolve readily in molten iron. D": 3% of Earth's mass; depth of 2,700-2,890 kilometers(1,688 - 1,806 miles)This layer is 200 to 300 kilometers (125 to 188 miles) thick and represents about 4% of the mantle-crust mass. Although it is often identified as part of the lowermantle, seismic discontinuities suggest the D" layer might differ chemically fromthe lower mantle lying above it. Scientists theorize that the material eitherdissolved in the core, or was able to sink through the mantle but not into the core because of its density.Lower mantle: 49.2% of Earth's mass; depth of 650-2,890 kilometers (406 -1,806 miles)The lower mantle contains 72.9% of the mantle-crust mass and is probably composed mainly of silicon, magnesium, and oxygen. It probably also contains some iron, calcium, and aluminum. Scientists make these deductions by assuming the Earth hasa similar abundance and proportion of cosmic elements as found in the Sun andprimitive meteorites.Transition region: 7.5% of Earth's mass; depth of 400-650 kilometers (250-406miles)The transition region or mesosphere (for middle mantle), sometimes called thefertile layer, contains 11.1% of the mantle-crust mass and is the source of basalticmagmas. It also contains calcium, aluminum, and garnet, which is a complex aluminum-bearing silicate mineral. This layer is dense when cold because of thegarnet. It is buoyant when hot because these minerals melt easily to form basaltwhich can then rise through the upper layers as magma.Upper mantle: 10.3% of Earth's mass; depth of 10-400 kilometers (6 - 250 miles) The upper mantle contains 15.3% of the mantle-crust mass. Fragments have beenexcavated for our observation by eroded mountain belts and volcanic eruptions.Olivine (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 and pyroxene (Mg,Fe)SiO3 have been the primary mineralsfound in this way. These and other minerals are refractory and crystalline at high temperatures; therefore, most settle out of rising magma, e ither forming new crustal material or never leaving the mantle. Part of the upper mantle called the asthenosphere might be partially molten.Oceanic crust: 0.099% of Earth's mass; depth of 0-10 kilometers (0 - 6 miles)The oceanic crust contains 0.147% of the mantle-crust mass. The majority of the Earth's crust was made through volcanic activity. The oceanic ridge system, a40,000-kilometer (25,000 mile) network of volcanoes, generates new oceanic crustat the rate of 17 km3 per year, covering the ocean floor with basalt. Hawaii andIceland are two examples of the accumulation of basalt piles.Continental crust: 0.374% of Earth's mass; depth of 0-50 kilometers (0 - 31miles).The continental crust contains 0.554% of the mantle-crust mass. This is the outer part of the Earth composed essentially of crystalline rocks. These are low-densitybuoyant minerals dominated mostly by quartz (SiO2) and feldspars(metal-poor silicates). The crust (both oceanic and continental) is the surface of the Earth; as such, it is the coldest part of our planet. Because cold rocks deform slowly, we refer to this rigid outer shell as the lithosphere (the rocky or stronglayer). The many part of the earth’s atmosphere are linked with the various parts of theearth’s surface to produce a whole---the climate system. Different parts of theearth’s surface react to the energy of the sun in different ways. For example, ice and snow reflect much of it. Land surfaces absorb solar energy and heat up rapidly. Oceans store the energy without experiencing a significant temperature rise. Thus, the different types of surfaces transfer heat into the atmosphere at different rates. We can view climate as existing in three domains: space, time, and humanperception. In the domain of space, we can study local, regional, and global climates. In time, we can look at the climate for a year, a decade, a millennium, and so forth. Finally, we depend on our perceptions of the data, so we must include our own human perception into our model. Human perception must be included if our understandingof climatic processes is to be translated into societal actions. As a society, wemake informed choices about how to use the beneficial effects of climate, such asdeciding when and where to plant crops. We also make choices about how to minimizethe harmful effects of climate---storms, blizzards, and droughts.1.Why does the author discuss different parts of the earth’s surface in paragraph 1?A.To explain why humans live in some parts but not in othersB.To show that the entire earth is made of the same materialsC.To compare how various surfaces transfer heat into the atmosphereD.To describe changes in the earth’s appearance throughout the year.2.According to the author, why must we include human perception in our studyof climate?A.We must interpret data and take actions related to climateB.We must create an interesting model of the climate systemC.We must develop an understanding of our environmentD.We must change our traditional ways of studying climate.(思考)3. Read the sentence below and write an essay which will have a minimumof 100 words. Our understanding of climatic processes is to be translated into societalactions.答案:1.C 2.AThe discovery of freezing has changed our eating habits more than any other related invention. Because many foods contain large amounts of water, they freeze solidlyat or just below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. When we lower the temperature to well below the freezing point and prevent air from penetrating the food, we retard the natural process of decay that causes food to spoil. Freezing preserves the flavor andnutrients of food better than any other preservation method. When p roperly prepared and packed, foods and vegetables can be stored in the freezer for one year. Most vegetables and some fruits need blanching before they are frozen, and toavoid this step would be an expensive mistake. The result would be a product largely devoid of vitamins and minerals. Proper blanching curtails the enzyme action, which vegetables require during their growth and ripening but which continues aftermaturation and will lead to decay unless it is almost entirely stopped by blanching. This process is done in two ways, either by plunging vegetables in a large amountof rapidly boiling water for a few minutes or by steaming them. For steam blanching, it is important that timing begin when the water at the bottom of the pot is boiling. Different vegetables require different blanching times, and specified times for each vegetable must be observed. Under-blanching is like no blanching at all, and over-blanching, while stopping the enzyme action, will produce soggy, discoloredvegetables.1.Why does the author mention 32 degrees Fahrenheit?A.To suggest the storage temperature for most foodsB.To identify the freezing point of waterC.To state the correct setting for a freezerD.To give the temperature for blanching2.Why does the author use the term expensive mistake in discussing blanching?A.To state that blanching is expensive but very effectiveB.To warn that not blanching will harm the food’s nutritional valueC.To emphasize the importance of blanching only a few items at a timeD.To show that many people waste food by blanching improperly答案:1.B2.B。
3. Reading ComprehensionSections Three:Reading ComprehensionBird SongP1: Bird song has never lacked admirers drawn by its aesthetic qualities. But to scientists, bird song is also of interest because it represents an evolutionary flowering of vocal learning. Hereditary information and environment have a crucial role to play in the behavioral patterns of voca learning. Since the pioneering work of W. H. Thorpe on chaffinches (a common European bird), many species of bird have been studied yielding a bountiful harvest of insights into both the learning process and the constraints on what they are able to learn.P2: To determine how much learning was affected by various factors, Thorpe devised a series of experiments. He hand-reared a group of young chaffinches together in the same cage, keeping them isolated from their parents and any other audio role models. Thorpe found that the song they produced was about the right length and in the correct frequency range, and even structured similarly to those raised in the wild. And yet, the quality of the songs they produced was very poor. They were crude versions of the wild chaffinch’s song, lacking the refinement and detail characteristic of the typical wild adult song, and the song was not split up into distinct phrases as it usually is. In later experiments, researchers played recordings of songs to the chicks and discovered that many of them would learn the exact pattern of the acoustic source. This was particularly remarkable, as juveniles were able to copy the songs that they were only exposed to over the first few weeks of life with extreme precision, though they would not sing themselves until about eight months old. After that brief period, however, the windows of opportunity for the song-learning process apparently shut down for the rest of the birds’lives.P3: The songs of different species of birds vary and are generally typical of the species.Species vary greatly in the complexity of their songs and in the number of distinct kinds of song they sing. In general, however, the constraints on learning which birds have ensure that they only learn songs appropriate to the species to which they themselves belong. The constraints may be innate in their brain’s circuitry. The chick hatches with a rough idea of the sounds that it should copy, and the singing of the parents and neighbors activates parts of the song template—syllables or song types used in composing his song. The crude song of a bird reared in isolation gives some clues as to what this rough idea may be: the length, the frequency range and the breaking up into notes are all aspects of chaffinch song shared between normal birds and those reared in isolation. In other cases the constraints are more social. During development, young birds may also rearrange the song notes they learn to generate into a new order, which includes many notes that are near or exact matches of material copied from one or more adult models. Thus, young birds are only able to learn from individuals with whom they have social interactions. Whatever the nature of the rules that direct song-learning in a particular species, thereis no doubt that they are effective; it is very unusual to hear a wild bird singing a song which is not typical of its own species despite the many different songs which often occur in its social colonial environment.P4: However, not all birds show the same learning pattern as do chaffinches. There are some species which produce normal sounds even if deaf, so that they are restricted from the auditory feedback of their own efforts, much less copy those of others. In other cases, such as parrots and hill mynahs, birds can be trained to copy a huge variety of sounds. The amazing capability of mynahs has apparently arisen simply because birds in an area learn more readily from live tutors, though those calls are highly varied in structure. The ability to master them has led the birds, incidentally, to be capable of mimicking a wide variety of other sounds.P3: The songs of different species of birds vary and are generally typical of the species. ■Species vary greatly in the complexity of their songs and in the number of distinct kinds of song they sing.
这不同于老托福阅读里面每篇文章都有一道“What is the passage mainly about”这样的全文主旨题。
Why you may wonder should spiders be our friends? Because they destroy so many insects and insects include some of the greatest enemies of the human race. Insects would make it impossible for us to live in the world. They would devour all our crops and kill our flocks and herds if it were notfor the protection we get from insect-eating animals. We owe a lot to the birds and beasts who eat insects but all of them put together kill only a fraction of the number destroyed by spiders. Moreover unlike some of the other insect-eaters spiders never do the least harm to us or our belongings.

Labor-saving machinery naturally appeared first where labor was scarce. "In Europe, said Thomas Jefferson, "the object is to make the most of their land, labor beingabundant: here it is to make the most of our labor, land being abundant. It was in the United States, therefore, that the great advances in nineteenth-century agricultural machinery first came.At the opening of the century, with the exception of a crude plow, farmers could have carried practically all of the existing agricultural implements on their backs; by 1860, most of the machinery in use today had been designed in an early form. The most important of the early inventions was the iron plow. As early as 1790 Charles Newbold of New Jersey had been working on the idea of a cast-iron plow and spent his entire fortune in introducing his invention. The farmers, however, were not interested in it, claiming that the iron poisoned the soil and made the weeds grow. Because managers who try to be friends with their staff run into all sorts of problems. A manager’s job is to evaluate staff’s work, give them feedback and make decisions. If the boss makes friends with an employee. Others will think the employee has an unfair advantage at performance review time, thus resentment will start to build up. What’s more, when it comes time for promotions, the employee may have an expectation that as a friend, the boss will promote him or her. While the boss should choose the best person for the job, not a friend. This could create tension in and out of the workplace. Which of the following functions of smart phones most beneficial to students?1)taking photos2) listening to the music3)recording lectures托福口语范文:Sample answer:In my point of view, listening to music is most beneficial to students when they use their smart phones. Because first, listening to the music is an effective way for students to relax themselves. It is the fact that nowadays students are quite busy with their schoolwork for nearly whole week. So in their limited spare time, many students tend to listen to some sweet music on their phones to release their stress from study, which allows them to forget their heavy study tasks for a little while. Besides, music can please almost everyone, but not all the students like taking photos and it’s unnecessary for most of them to record lectures with their smart phones.Describe a difficulty you once met and explain how you overcame it.Well,,,when I was in high school,my math teacher was so boring that every time I was having her class,I would fall asleep.Since I've lost my interest.I couldn't do well in it.Definitely(副词强调)that's the hardship I have met before.
