Passage 1It all began with...Orlando Bloom was not a “good” student at school.Because of dyslexia,a reading and writing disorder(障碍),he struggled in many courses. But Bloom says the dyslexia gave him the encouragement to overcome(克服)his difficulties. In an interview with the Telegraph, the 32-year-old said the condition turned him into an ambitious person.“Because of the dyslexia,I always thought I had to work twice as hard as ever yone else just to go the same distance,” he said.“That gave me a real kick as a kid and a lot of encouragement later on.In one sense,I guess that I’m grateful (感激的).”Bloom is always preparing it thoroughly(充分地) when it comes to an audition (试镜)for a part.Perhaps this is what won him his role in The Lord of the Rings,a highly successful film trilogy (三部曲).“I really prepared it thoroughly for the audition and it’s paid off,” he said.It was the beginning of a fame that led to even greater success as a movie actor. But unlike some young people who aim for fame and fortune,Bloom believed an acting career has been fulfilling (实现) his childhood fantasies.“Aged 9,I had this girlfriend and we used to have running races in the park to see who would be her boyfriend for the day.I wanted to be like Superman and fly in and rescue her.Once I realized Superman was an actor,I thought,‘That’s for me.’”Bloom has always played special characters, like a knight (骑士) and a prince. It’s difficult to picture him in everyman roles. In October 2009,Bloom was named Goodwill Ambassador (亲善大使) for United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund(UNICEF).His first task would be to film a documentary about the importance of clean water supplies. In fact,Bloom started work for the UNICEF in 2007.On his first visit to Nepal,he was asked by students to take a small part in a play they were performing on local radio.Personal record of Orlando BloomWhen he was nine years old He wanted to be like Superman and fly in and 1. his girlfriend. That’s why he became an 2. .When he was a student at school 3. of dyslexia,Bloom 4. in many courses, which 5. him to work twice as hard as everyone else.In one sense, dyslexia 6. him overcome his difficulties. When he chose to be an actor Bloom is always well 7. for auditions.Perhaps this is 8. won him his role in The Lord of the Rings. In 2007 Bloom started work for the UNICEF.In October 2009 Bloom was 9. The editors of gave $5 or $20 to 46 strangers by chance.Half the group was told to spend the money on themselves, while the other half was told to spend it on others. Those who ’d shared the wealth felt much happier at the end of the day than those who ’d spent it on themselves. There was no difference in happiness between those who spent $5 or $20,suggesting that it ’s not how much money you spend, but how you spend it,that inspires the spirit.Studies from the Positive Psychology Center showed that discouraged people who wrote down three good things that happened to them each day for six months reported an improved attitude.Drinking water really can help keep you cheerful.A small 2012 study from the University of Connecticut suggested that even slight dehydration (脱水) affected the moods of its female participants. 高一英语阅读理解练习(五)AWhen I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at ‘bed and breakfast’houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.“We didn‟t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we f ound that most families were away on holiday.”I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought …V ACANCIES‟ meant …holidays‟, because the Spanish word for …holidays” is …vacaciones‟. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said …V ACANCLES‟, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said …NO V ACANCLES‟, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels! We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word …DIVERSION‟ means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word …DIVERSION‟ on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hold.English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris. when someone offered me some more. coffee, I said …Thank you‟ in French. spoken.Secondly,we must be able to speak it ourselves, with confidence (自信)and without hesitation(犹豫).Thirdly,we must do much reading. Finally,we must be able to write it.We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar. There are no shortcuts to success in language learning.A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book.It is not much learning by heart long lists(一览表)of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on.We must learn by using the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized,we are not really learning the language. We must “learn through use.” Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.21.The most important things to learn a foreign language are _____.A.understanding and speakingB.listening, speaking, reading and writingC.writing and understandingD.memorizing and listening22.Someone hears and writes English very well, but he speaks lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. That's wrong.Language is for the exchange(交流)of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently(流利地).They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language.Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too.Bernard Saw once wrote,“Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule,it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right.People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can't make another people's language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn't overdo(做过头)it.They should put communication(交际)first.1.Language is used to _____.A.express oneself B.practise grammar rulesC.talk with foreigners only D.learn lists of words2.Generally,when an American or an Englishman speaks English,he _____.A.never makes mistakes B.often makes mistakesC.can't avoid making mistakes D.always makes mistakes 3.“Foreigners often spea k English too correctly.” This sentence means that __.A.foreigners speak correct EnglishB.foreigners speak incorrect EnglishC.foreigners speak English according to the grammar rulesD.foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English4.If too many native speakers break a rule,______.A.what they use will become right B.they are against the lawC.they should say sorry to others D.they will become heroes 5.When we speak a foreign language,we should ______.A.speak in Chinese way B.speak by the rulesC.speak to native speakers D.not be afraid of making mistakesBMr and Mrs Gordon were sitting on the sand, reading their evening when he came to a crossroad. It had a “Slow” sign.He slowed down when he came to the main road, looked both ways to see that nothing was coming, and then drove across without stopping completely. At once he heard a police whistle,so he pulled into the side of the road and stopped.A policeman walked over to him with a notebook and a pen in his hand and said,“You didn't stop at that crossing.”“But the sign there doesn't say 'stop'”,answered Mr Williams.“It just says 'Slow',and I did go slow.”The policeman looked around him,and a look of surprise came over hisface. Then he put his airplanes cannot. They do not cost as much to travel on.Even though they may not move as fast as airplanes and trains, they sometimes take people between two places faster. This is because they may travel a more direct way,or may leave more often,or at better times.Buses come in different sizes.A small bus can carry only eight or ten people.A large one might have seats for fifty to seventy people and have standing room for more.Thousands of yellow school buses carry millions of children to school every year. Most of these buses have seats placed quite close together to fit in as many children as possible. Some schools buy their own buses.Others pay to use buses that belong to bus companies.City and town buses carry people for short distances. The seats of these are close together, and there is standing room as well. Most city buses have two doors so that people can get on and off quickly.Long distance buses go from state to state or country to country.Theygive people small packages(包裹).It has rules that all countries must follow about international postal rates(费用).One hundred years ago, international mail did not move so smoothly. One country did not always accept another country's letters.Letters from some countries were too large to fit into the mailboxes of other countries.Letters travelled by many different routes(路线).Some were lost along the way.Sometimes the person who sent the letter could pay only part of the postage. The person receiving the letter had to pay the rest. The United States was the first to suggest that all countries work togetherto settle the questions of international mail.In 1974,men from twenty-four countries met in Switzerland to form the Universal Postal Union.Today, more than 120 nations belong to this union. From its office A MythIt is true that world population is growing, but this is not the ca use of our current and future global problems. Believing this w ill cause us to ignore the real problem and risk long-term damage to our planet.Let me start by explaining why overpopulation is a myth. For o ne thing, the UN Population Division regularly predicts populat ion growth but provides a low variant (变量), medium variant, and high variant to factor in various possi bilities. In the 2010 revision, their high variant suggests that th e world population will be almost 16 billion in 2100, but the lo w variant predicts it will peak at 8 billion and decrease to just over 6 billion by 2100. In most cases, it is the low variant that has come true in the past, suggesting the same will be true of their future population predictions. In addition to this, the size of families is actually decreasing. For another, if the Earth is overpopulated, there needs to be i nsufficient (短缺) food, water, and space for humans to live. However, India n economist Raj Krishna estimates that alone is able to incre ase crop produce to the point of providing the entire world’s fo od supply. It is a sad truth that 80% of the world’s resources are currently used by just 20% of the world’s population. Our overconsumption must be addressed now to make our liv es more sustainable (可持续的) and avoid continuing the terrible damage to the environme nt we are causing. In fact, all rela tionships need limits no matter whether they are friendships, s ibling relations, mates/ lovers or business relations. On some l evel, all limit setting means saying no. However, it is usually a qualified “no” that says what, where, when, and under what c onditions you will give or not give to another person. There are three points we should keep in mind about limit setting:1.Decide where to set the limits. Think about the entire situati on. Consider your time, emotions, and means. Then consider whether you are helping the other person. Aim to do somethin g to help the other person without taking on the whole proble m.2.Express the limits clearly. For example, you say to your frie nd, “ I will lend you $20,000 no more than once every three m onths. And I expect you will pay me back within three monthsand certainly before you can borrow more.” You say to anothe r friend, “you can stay here for three weeks but you must help me with expenses and cooking and make sure that you will find your own place before the three weeks is up”.3.Stick to your limits. You are not responsible for making the o ther person obey the limits. You are only responsible for follo wing the limits yourself. Your friend has repaid $12,500 of his/ her $20,000 and asks for $20,000 more. You say no. He/She gets emotional and then says, “I need this money to cover a b ad check. If you cared for our friendship, you would do it”.Limit setting is often stressful and painful because people m istakes it for rejection. And limit setting certainly brings guilt. B ear in mind, it doesn’t mean you have given up or quit loving y our friend, lovers, or sibling. It does mean you are expressing that love in a different and more helpful (to both of you) mann er.25. According to the passage, setting limits means__________ _________.A. refusing always to say yes to your friendB. saying no to your friend who turns to youC. making different kinds of friendsD. breaking away fro m your friend26.Once you decide to set limits, you should_______________ _________.A. announce it publicly to othersB. tell your friend about it clearlyC. be responsible for your friendD. begin to help your frie nd27.We can learn from the last paragraph that limit setting____ __________.A. is often misunderstoodB. is actually a kind of reje ctionC. does harm to your friendship D .contains both love and hate28. Unit5 单元高考阅读阅读提示:语言已有几千年的历史,本文从语言发展历史这一角度论述了人类的发展导致了世界上语言数量的减少。
Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit(联系)groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.①Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English,Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages ;the Americas about 1,000 ;Africa 2,400 ;and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200,of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number (中位数)of speakers is a mere 6,000,which means that h alf the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.②Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction(消亡),with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon ( eight remaining speakers ),Chiapaneco in Mexico (150),Li pan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark):none of these seems to have much chance of survival.。

Studies have shown how those who read for pleasure achieve more in literacy (读写能力) and thinking abilities than those who don't. Actually, there is nothing else that will expand your language skills and make your imagination fly.To begin with, language skills can be better learned through reading for pleasure than through watching TV for entertainment. At its best, television can be educational as well as entertaining, but nobody wishes to improve his literacy by simply sitting in front of a TV box. Therefore, only by reading can you enlarge your vocabulary. However, it must be made clear that the relation between literacy and reading is like comparing health to sport. One is something practical and the other is something you do because you enjoy it.The books that help you most in imagination are those that make you think most. In this point, reading for pleasure, both paper-based and on-screen, is far more helpful than watching TV. For example, there is always a book which is opened with expectation and closed with profit: imagination. Unluckily, some people's love of books is lost influenced by television, which is considered as a decline in thinking abilities. On the whole, watching TV is largely harmless as an entertainment and information tool, but there is no better way to improve your language skills and imagination than reading for pleasure. For those who would continue to enjoy reading, there is a paradise (天堂) not yet being lost. Having got an amount of language skills through wide reading, you might as well imagine that such a paradise would not be very unlike a kind of library.1.What does the writer mainly talk about in Paragraph 1?A.The advantage of reading books.B.The way of improving language skills.C.The pleasure in watching TV.D.The advantage of our imagination.2.What does the writer say about reading in the text?A.People can get the latest information through it.B.It offers more pleasure than watching TV.C.It plays a bigger role in kids' growth than watching TV.D.More language skills will be gained as people read more.3.Which word can replace the underlined word "decline" in Paragraph 3?A.Development.B.Decrease.C.Destroy.D.Improvement.4.What does the writer think of watching TV?A.It's a waste of time and energy.B.It's a paradise for those who like watching TV.C.It's helpful in some aspects.D.It's done only for entertainment.CLiving on mountainous La Gomera, one of Spain's Canary Islands off West Africa, Juan Cabello takes pride in not using a mobile phone or the Internet to communicate. Like his father and grandfather, he uses Silbo Gomero, a language that is whistled (吹口哨), not spoken, and that can be heard more than two miles away."I use it for everything: to talk to my wife, to tell my kids something, to find a friend if we get lost in a crowd," Cabello says. "I also make a living from Silbo, performing daily exhibitions at a restaurant."People throughout La Gomera are known to have used Silbo in the past as a way of communicating over long distances. A strong whistle saved farmers from walking over the hills to give messages or news to neighbors. Then came the phone. Nowadays, it's hard to know how many people still use Silbo. In 1999, it was introduced as a compulsory subject (必修学科) in La Gomera's primary schools, in an effort to prevent the language from going silent. Now 3,000 students are studying it, but only a few people are believed to be able to communicate fully in the whistling language."Silbo is said to be the most important cultural heritage (遗产) we have," said Moises Plasencia, the director of the Canary Islands' government's historical heritage department. In fact, little is known about Silbo's origins. Silbo-like whistling has been found in parts of Greece, Turkey, China and Mexico, but none is as developed as Silbo Gomero. One study islooking for signs of Silbo in Venezuela, Cuba and Texas, all places to which Gomerans have gone in the past during hard economic times."Silbo has many historical and linguistic (语言学上的) values," Plasencia said. And, as Cabello explains, "It's good for just about anything except for romance: everyone on the island would hear what you're saying!"1.Juan Cabello uses Silbo Gomero _____________.A.in his daily lifeB.to learn computersC.just to make a livingD.only when eating at restaurants2.What can we learn about Silbo Gomero?A.It first started in Greece.B.It is in danger of dying out.C.It is helpful in keeping secrets.D.It is the oldest way of communicating.3.Plasencia thinks it's very important to __________.A.know the origins of Silbo GomeroB.find the values of Silbo GomeroC.have more cultural heritagesD.protect Silbo Gomero4.What is mainly described in the text?A.A school's subject.B.A famous performer.C.An unusual language.D.A mountainous island.DLanguages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit(联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10, 000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.At present, the world has about 6, 800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers.Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number(中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world's languages are spoken by fewer people than that.Already well over 400 of the total of 6, 800 languages are close to extinction(消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.1. What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?A. They developed very fast.B. They were large in number.C. They had similar patternsD. They were closely connected.2. Which of the following best explains "dominant" underlined in Paragraph 2?A. ComplexB. Advanced.C. PowerfulD. Modern.3. How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present?A. About 6,800B. About 3,400C. About 2,400D. About 1,2004. What is the main idea of the text?A. New languages will be created.B. People's lifestyles are reflected in languages.C. Human development results in fewer languages.D. Geography determines language evolution.第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

英语时文阅读五高一英语组Passage 1This is no April Fools joke.Students from the San Diego Jewish Academy in the US broke the Guinness World Record when they managed to make more than 800 sandwiches in three minutes on April 1.However, the students were doing more than just setting a world record. They gave the sandwiches to the homeless and so learned a lesson about helping their community.“We want our students to know it’s not enough to talk about changing the w orld,” said school principal (校长) Chaim Heller. “It’s not enough to raise money to change the world. You have to use your hands and feet.”The world record for making the most sandwiches in three minutes had been 490. But the 550 students from kindergarten to 12th grade may have shattered (打破) that record by making 868 sandwiches in the school gym.The sandwiches were given to the Alpha Project, which served them later that day to homeless people and low-income residents (居民) around Alpha Square.Students found 52 tables waiting for them in the school gym, each laid out with slices of bread, lettuce, sliced tomatoes and American cheese. Forty-five parent volunteers were on hand to help, and a note on each table told the students what to put in each sandwich – two slices of cheese, one slice of tomato and one piece of lettuce. The gym’s scoreboard was set at three minutes. A countdown commenced (开始), a buzzer sounded and tables throughout the gym became a flurry of (一阵忙乱) fast-moving cheese and bread. The youngest students made one sandwich each while older ones made two. Within two minutes, almost all of the students had stepped back from their table. They waved their gloved hands in the air to show that they had finished.“These types of experiences not only bring together our school community, but help students learn t hat everyone can make a sandwich to help those in need,” said Heller. “We want our students to see themselves as leaders who can make a difference in people’s lives.”1. Why did students from the San Diego Jewish Academy make 868sandwiches?A. To set a Guinness World Record.B. To raise money to help poor people.C. To help their community through their action.D. To put their cooking knowledge into practice2. What do we know about the sandwich-making event?A. Students had to prepare the ingredients themselves.B. The students were asked to make two sandwiches each.C. Parents were not allowed to help their kids.D. Most of the students finished their work ahead of time.3. What did Heller think of the activity?A. It was a waste of study time.B. It helped students to learn.C. It failed to achieve its purpose.D. It interested many students in cooking.Passage 2Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, “The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are.” This is definitely (绝对地) true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but for the British, the opposite is true. We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative (消极的).British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy (悲剧). BBC’s The Office is a TV show, famous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show’s comedy comes from his delusions. For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly tragic individual (个体This side of British humor is reflected (反映) in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at one another. I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm (挖苦) quite upsetting. She didn’t realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them. This approach – laughing at everything – may sound rather depressing (让人郁闷的), but our strange humor played a big part in British history. In World War II, along with a stiff upper lip (坚定沉着), the British got through it by laughing. What else was there to do?There is a saying in English: “Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cr y alone.” If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it’s best to just laugh it off!4.British comedy is different from other types in that ______ .A. it is often surprising and boringB. it often laughs at human natureC. it is often about the bad things in lifeD. it often makes people feel depressed5.What does the underlined word “delusions” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Strong abilities.B. Fun characters.C. Wrong beliefs.D. Deep confidence.6.Why is Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night mentioned in the article?A. To show one of the best examples of British comedy.B. To explain how Shakespeare’s comedy is different from others’.C. To show how difficult it is to make people accept British comedy.D. To prove Britain has a long tradition of laughing at stupid characters.7.How does the author advise people to react to British humor?A. Learn from it.B. Don’t take it seriously.C. Forget about the upsetting things.D. Be careful not to make stupid mistakes.Passage 3Parrots have been known to mimic (模仿) words, but have you ever thought how they communicate? The sounds they make may sound meaningless to us, but new research has found that wild parrots are actually given names by their parents.According to a study led by Karl Berg of Cornell University in the US, nestlings (雏鸟) are given a unique sound of their own, which stays with them for their entire lives. In the study, the team placed hidden cameras in the nests of 17 different wild parrots. After studying their sounds, the team identified slight differences in the calls parents used to communicate with each chick. And even before the nestlings had learned to communicate properly, the baby birds seemed to recognize and mimic their calls.Sounds very similar to humans, doesn’t it?The study also proved that these signature calls are acquired socially not genetically (基因上地). To do this, scientists switched the eggs in nine of the 17 nests, so that half of the parrots were raising nestlings that weren’t theirs. Using the recordings, the scientists concluded the nestlings all used names similar to those the parents (whether biological or nonbiological) called them for the first weeks of their lives.Lucie McNeil, from National Geographic, said, “this would be the first [proven] example of a non-human species teaching acoustical (声学的) communication.”Lead scientist for the study, Karl Berg told National Public Radio of the US,“Most people say, ‘Well, all those calls are just noise,’ but I think they’re having conversations.”Fox News also asked Berg what else the parrots might be saying? He replied, “The theory is that these birds are deciding where the food is, ‘Do we want to go 3 km North-Northwest?’ “Do we want to go to that field?’ They are sort of arguing or discussing.”Natural science author, Virginia Morell, wrote: “Very gradually, scientists are learning to decode the conversations of very different animals that live lives rich with plans, quarrels, and romance.”You never know, if the science of animal translation keeps advancing, we might one day be watching a reality series about parrots.8. What did the new research find about wild parrots?A. They can talk by learning from people.B. The sounds they make are meaningless.C. They have names given by their parents.D. They have a unique way of making sounds.9. What does the study suggest?A. Different parrots are called differently by their parents.B. Baby parrots can tell who their biological parents are.C. Baby parrots can mimic their biological parents’ calls better.D. Parrots are the most skilled animals in acoustical communication.10. Why did the scientists switch the eggs in the study?A. To see whether the parents could recognize their own babies.B. To see whether the parrots made the same sounds all their lives.C. To see whether the signature calls were acquired socially or genetically.D. To see whether biological and nonbiological parents named babies differently.11. The underlined word “decode” in the second-to-last paragraph is closest in meaning to “_____”.A. mimicB. understandC. practiceD. createPassage 4For most of my life I knew nothing about motorcycles. I believed that motorcycle riders were tough and leather-wearing (穿着皮衣的) loners. In my mind they were the kind of people who were constantly looking for trouble, using the roar of a motorcycle engine (发动机) to frighten others off. Then, on a warm May evening outside our house my boyfriend began to show me his new motorcycle. It was the first time it had ever been mentioned and I was shocked.“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” he asked. I didn’t really un derstand what I was looking at.It wasn’t until August that I was able to actually ride on the motorcycle with him. I prepared very well: a new helmet (头盔) and slightly oversized leather jacket. The first ride was tricky. I held on a little too tight (紧的) and breathed a little too infrequently. The cars felt a little too close and traffic seemed to move too fast. The evening ride was short. After that, the bike carried us higher and higher into the hills. We pulled over and stopped to watch the sun set over the city below. I swung(摆动) my leg over to get off the bike, slightly shaky and full of nervous energy.Sometimes, when he was gone on a Saturday ride, I’d try on his leathers and look in the mirror, wondering if I looked like a biker myself.Since then, I’ve learned a few things and slowly my prejudices (偏见) about motorcycles and motorcycle riders have started to shift. Sitting on the back of a motorcycle, placing all your trust in someone to get you safely home is a way of reminding you that you love them.Maybe the most important lesson, though, is that you really can’t judge a book by its cover – no matter how much leather it wears. Motorcycle riders are not scary, or mean, or unapproachable (不可接近的). They’re adults who remember the freedom of riding their first bicycle, and are continuously seeking to recreate the experience.Choose the best answer:12. What did the author think of motorcycle riders at first?A. They were losers at life.B. They were troublesome.C. They were very strong.D. They were very social.13. 虾对市爱抚阳光实验学校课标高一英语阅读精选51-60篇Passage 51If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memoryworks in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, and few of us know that it is just his own fault.Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.218w1. However, fish do have ears inside their bodies, near the brain, and they hear very well with them. Some fish have been taught to recognize the difference between sounds better than some human beings do.Many underwater animals make noises only by chance while they are doing something else. Other sounds are real communications of a simple sort, telling one fish of the presenceand direction of another. A few noises may be warning messages or discovery of food, etc. The earliest scientific report on fish sounds referred to one of these.A new field in science is learning to recognize and use underwater birds and other land creatures by their calls. But this method is a greater challenge than bird-watching, for many of the animals of the sea cannot be followed in any other known way. Their voices cry for attention. Yet we still have too little knowledge about many of the call makers which will some day be made known more fully. It is as though the great oceans were for daring man to invadethem and to learn the secrets of the place from which his forefathers came so long ago.208w1. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A well-known scientist, Ellsworth Huntington(1876-1947), concluded from other men's work and his own among peoples in different climatesthat climate and temperature have an obvious effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to belowest in the summer.Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factorsthat bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacationROM thinking!191w 1. You can not jump any higher because the earth pulls you hard. The pull of the earth is called gravity. You can easily find out the pull of the earth. If you weigh yourself, you will know how much gravity is pulling you.Since there is gravity, water runs downhill. When you throw a ball into the air, it falls back down. Because of gravity you do not fall off the earth as it whirlsaround. Then can we get a way from the earth and go far out into space? Now you can do it, because spaceships have been invented. The spaceship will go fast. It can escape the earth's gravity and carry you into space.135w1. What causes waves? Most waves are caused by winds blowing over the surface of the water. The heat of the earth causes the air to rise and the winds to blow. The winds blow across the sea, pushing little waves into bigger and bigger ones. The size of a wave depends on how strong the wind is. In a small bay big waves will never build up. But at sea the wind can build up giant powerful waves.A rule says that the height of a wave (in metres) will usually be no more than one-tenth of the wind's speed(in kilometers). In other words, when the wind is blowing at 120 kilometres per hour, most waves will be about twelve metres. Of course, some waves are reported the largestmeasured waves in history. One rose in the Pacific Ocean to a height of thirty-four metres.167w1. If the rapid increase of world population in countries continues at the present rate, there may be much greater harm to human beings. Some scientists speak of the increase in numbers of people as "population pollution".About 2000 years ago, the world population was probably about 250 million. It reached a billion in 1850. By 1930 the population was two billion. It is now over five billion. It is expected to be seven billion by the year 2000. If the population continues to grow at the same rate, there will be 25 billion people in the world a hundred years from now. Man has been using the earth's resources more and more rapidly over the past years. Some of them are almost used up. Now many people believe that man's greatest problem is how to control the growth of the population. The material supplies in the world will far from enough to support the human population, in time to come, if the present rate of increase continues. Already there is overcrowding in many cities and starvationin some countries. Should man's population keep on growing so rapidly as before? Located in the south of Zhejiang Province’s Wenzhou City, Pingyang County is the home of the amazing provincial intangible cultural heritage:the Pingyang puppet show. The Pingyang Puppetry Troupe is the oldest puppetry troupe in China. The puppets are delicate and vivid. Yet behind all these are the skillful hands of the puppeteers.“Handling a puppet is like playing the piano,”says Lin Si, 24. “Attached to your ten fingers are more than 30 threads. Every single movement of the joints, the eyes and the mouth is for you to control.”Lin is a new-generation puppeteer of the Pingyang puppet show. Her father, a member of the troupe, used to take her to see the troupe’s performances when she was young.①I found the puppetry very interesting, but I never expected to be sent to study in Shanghai Theatre Academy.”There were 8 students chosen from Wenzhou,7 of whom stayed in Shanghai after graduation. Only Lin went back to her hometown and joined the Pingyang Puppetry Troupe.“The most difficult part of the training was holding the puppets. I had to hold them still for more than half an hour,,,says Lin. “I couldn’t lift my arms for days after that.”Being shorter than other performers, she has to wear heels in order to keep the puppets at the same level, which makes it more laborious for her.②Lin can handle and make the puppets. The troupe’s puppets can’t be produced in large quantities, as each is unique.Like many other traditional arts, the Pingyang puppet show has a limited audience. All the other artists of the troupe are in their 40s or 50s. As the only young performer, Lin has to take part in important annual shows to improve herself.Lin is actually a fashionable girl off stage. Flexible fingers make herformidable in some popular mobile games. “If I could make the puppets of the game characters, perhaps our puppetry would attract more attention of the younger generation,”she says. She hopes someday that will come true.。

It has been around for hundreds of years. The yo-yo is a simple piece of equipment. It consists of two discs that are linked(连接)by a smooth axle. A piece of string is looped around the axle. The yo-yo spins(旋转)on the string, moving up and down unde r the player’s control. The player makes the yo-yo spin by holding on to one end of the string and releasing the yo-yo with a flick of the wrist(手腕). Good players can make the yo-yo continue spinning for several minutes. In recent years, the technical quality of yo-yos has improved. Modern discs are weighted around the edge. Another development is the use of ball-bearing axles.According to Dave Berry, Chairman of the Yo-yo Club of Australia, there are several reasons why yo-yos are popular. They do not need a lot of equipment, time, money or space. More than that, however, the yo-yo is not just a toy. “The yo-yo is very good for relaxing the mind and body,” Berry said. “It is a wonderful way to relieve stress(压力).” This explains why the yo-yo is popular with adults as well as children. What advice does Dave Berry have for yo-yo players? “Safety is important. Never throw your yo-yo at people, animals or machines. Check your yo-yo carefully, especially the string, to make sure that it is in good condition. Never play with a yo-yo that is cracked or broken. And most important, be careful that the string does not go around your neck, or around the neck of any other people or animals.”(307 words)1.The yo-yo is a _________.A. toyB. machineC. clubD. pet2.The yo-yo is made up of _________.A.two discs, a piece of string and two axlesB. a piece of string, two discs and an axleC.an axle, a disc and two pieces of stringD.two axles, two discs and two piece of string3.Which of the following statements is NOT true?A.The yo-yo becomes a craze for a time and then it is forgotten.B.The yo-yo can be spun for several minutes.C.Not only children but also adults like the yo-yo.D.The yo-yo has been improved in discs and axle.4.In Paragraph 4 the writer mainly tells us ___________.A.the yo-yo is popular in AustraliaB.the yo-yo is good for people’s mind and bodyC.how to play the yo-yoD.why the yo-yo is popular5.Dave Berry gives ________ pieces of advice on safety when playing the yo-yo.A. twoB. threeC. fourD. fiveKeys: A B A D C。
