Putting laundry for airing on bamboo sticks seems to have been a “folk custom” for the Shanghailanders. A newcomer to the city, strolling streets and alleyways, can always see quilts and sheets, even handkerchiefs, socks, diapers and underwear, dangling from the balconies or dancing outside the windows. It looks like a spectacular“street fair” of clothing and bedclothes.

It’s a familiar sight in Shanghai that newly-built flats seem to become flag-flapping vessels. Blinding postboxes and street nameplates, lined-up sheets overshadow the gorgeous shopwindows. Walking along some narrow old residential districts, pedestrians have to quicken their pace in order to avoid dripping laundry.
