Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to regress. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading according to the type of reading matter and to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter. He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages, perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads. Consequently, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points.A type of reading which necessitates careful attention to detail is proofreading, in which the reader, in order to detect misprints in a sample print, has to notice not so much the meaning of what he reads as the exact shape and order of letters and words in the text. This is extremely difficult for most people, since they are accustomed to overlooking such details. In fact, considerable practice is required to practice this task efficiently and it can be done only by reading very slowly, and by paying comparatively little attention to the general meaning of the text.第1题The author claims that there is a difference in reading speed______.A.among readers who have different experienceB.among all the readersC.between the poorly educated and the highly educatedD.among the highly educated people第2题A good reader is a reader who______.A.concentrates on the wonderful part of the articleB.always reads slowly and carefullyC.changes his speed according to the kind of textD.changes his speed according to the interesting of the text第3题The author says that when reading a novel, a good reader can quickly read______.A.every part of the bookB.the most wonderful part in the bookC.the major part in the bookD.the scientific part of the book第4题The last two sentences of the first paragraph mean that______.A.a reading speed too slow for a difficult book is just right for a non-serious oneB.a reading speed too slow for a non-serious book may be too fast for a difficult oneC.A reading speed too fast for difficult material is just right for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult oneD.A reading speed too slow for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult one第5题Which of the following can be the tide of the passage?A.Reading and listening.B.Difference between highly educated and poorly educated.C.Practice reading skill.D.Difference in the speed and efficiency of reading.下一题(6~10/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Television has opened windows in everybody´s life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from allthe terrible things that have been shown on the screen.Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.Unfortunately, television´s influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn´t do funny things like the people on children´s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That´s the time it takes on the screen.第6题In the past, many young people______.A.knew the effects of warB.went in for politicsC.liked to save the wounded in warsD.were willing to be soldiers第7题Now with TV people can______.A.discuss politics at an information centerB.show more interest in politicsC.make their own decisions on political affairsD.express their opinions freely第8题The author thinks that TV advertisements______.A.are not reliable on the wholeB.are useless to peopleC.are a good guide to adultsD.are very harmful to the young第9题Which is NOT true according to the passage?A.People have become used to crimes now.B.On a TV screen some problems can be solved quickly.C.People now like to read books with pictures.D.The adults are less violent than the young.第10题From the passage, we can conclude that______.A.children should keep away from TV programs should be improvedC.children´s books should have pictures has a deep influence on the young上一题下一题(11~15/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages, I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil, reading about other people´s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do notmake a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of born worlds.第11题According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be______.A.full of enthusiasmB.self-disciplinedC.full of ambitionD.knowledgeable第12题The first paragraph tells us that the author______.A.lost his hearing when he was a childB.didn´t like his brothers and sistersC.was born to a naturalist´s familyD.was interested in flowers and inserts in his childhood第13题The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he______.A.just reads about other people´s observations and discoverieses up with solutions in most natural waysC.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmeticcks some of the qualities required of scientist第14题The author can´t remember his relatives clearly because______.A.he was fully occupied with observing natureB.he didn´t live very long with themC.the family was extremely largeD.he was too young when he lived with them第15题Which of the following statement is true?A.The author believes that a born naturalist cannot be a scientist.B.The author´s brothers and sisters were good at music and languages.C.The author read a lot of books about the natural world and the oil industry.D.The author spent a lot of time working on riddles.上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. They died when the ship went down. Men stood on the deck and smoked cigarettes. They died, too. This behavior is puzzling to economists, who like to believe that people tend to act in their own self-interest. "There was no pushing," says DavidSavage, an economist at Queensland University in Australia who has studied witness reports from the survivors. It was "very, very orderly behavior.´´Savage has compared the behavior of the passengers on the Titanic with those on the Lusitania, another ship that also sank at about the same time. But when the Lusitania went down, the passengers panicked. There were a lot of similarities between these two events. These two ships were both luxury ones, they had a similar number of passengers and a similar number of survivors. The biggest difference, Savage concludes, was time. The Lusitania sank in less than 20 minutes. But for the Titanic, it was two-and-a-half hours. "If you´ve got an event that lasts two-and-a-half hours, social order will take over and everybody will behave in a social manner,"Savage says. "If you´re going down in under 17 minutes, basically it´s instinctual." On the Titanic, social order ruled, and it was women and children first. On the Lusitania, instinct won out. The survivors were largely the people who could swim and get into the lifeboats.Yes, we´re self-interested, Savage says. But we´re also part of a society. Given time, social norms can beat our natural self-interest. A hundred years ago, women and children always went first. Men were stoic. On the Titanic, there was enough time for these norms to become forceful. 第16题According to the author, economists were confused because______.A.people´s behavior was disorderly on the TitanicB.people did not act in their own interest on the TitanicC.most men did not act in their own interest on the LusitaniaD.women and children could not climb into the lifeboats第17题The expression "won out" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to "______".A.took the upper handB.went out of controlC.ran wildD.shut down第18题According to David Savage, ______was a critical factor in determining people´s behavior in the sinking of these two ships.A.social orderB.placeC.instinctD.time第19题According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A.Both ships were expensive ones.B.A similar number of women and children from both ships survived.C.About the same number of people from each ship died.D.Both ships had a similar number of passengers.第20题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Why Didn´t Musicians Play on the Lusitania?B.Why Did Musicians Play on the Titanic?C.Why Didn´t Passengers Panic on the Titanic?D.Why Did Men Smoke on the Titanic?上一题下一题(1/29)Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. On a trip to a zoo, perhaps ? If you had attended a winter activity in New Y ork a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bear s”are people who meet frequ ently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3 degrees. And the water temp erature was a little higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the ag e of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, the y must get along well with everyone else in the group; thi s is very important because there are so many different kin ds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to s wim outdoors at least twice a month from November throu gh February.Doctors don’t agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body’s temperature drops so slow that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point o ut that there is more danger of a heart attack during summ er swimming because the difference between the air temper ature and the water tempreature is much greater in summer than in winter. The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the bene fits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite f orm of exercise is very good for the circulatory system be cause it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body w arm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probabl y has a very poor circulatory system and could not try col d-water swimming. The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probabl y mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all the year round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, “When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into t he ocean and let them float away.”1)、(单选题)Doctors _________ .•A、have different ideas about the medical effectsof cold-water swimming•B、believe swimming is helpful both in summer and in winter•C、enourage people to take part in cold-water swimming•D、point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimming2)、(单选题)According to the passage, somedoctors believe it is true that_______ .•A、Polar bears are bears swimming in freezing water•B、cold-water swimming can make the body temperature dangerously high•C、you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns yourskin color blue•D、cold-water swimming causes more heart attack in summer than in winter3)、(单选题)The Polar Bears like to swimyear-round, for _______ .•A、it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winter•B、they can stay young•C、they find it enjoyable and interesting•D、they might meet fewer troubles in life4)、(单选题)Which of the following isTRUE according to the text ?•A、The Polar Bear is a club in which people swim to protect polar bears.•B、The club members are all over 60 years old. •C、There is no woman in the club.•D、None of the above.5)、(单选题)This passage is mainly about_______ .•A、the requirements of the Polar Bear Club•B、a group of cold-water-swimming lovers•C、the Polar Bears’life in New York•D、doctors’ideas about cold-water swimming参考答案:1) A;2) D;3) C;4) D;5) B;展开解析33(15分)、How many times have you got upset because someone wasn't doing his job, because your child isn't behaving?H ow many times have you been irritatedwhen you've planne d something carefully and things didn't go as you'd hoped? This kind of anger and irritation happens to all of us —it’s part of the human experiences. One thing that irritates me is when people talk during a movie,or cut me off in traffic. Actually, I have a lot of these little annoyances—don't we all?And it isn’t alway s easy to find peace when you’ve become upset or irritate d.Let me tell you a little secret to finding peace of min d: see the glass as already broken .See, the cause of our stress, anger and irritation is tha t things don't go the way we like, the way we expect the m to. Think of how many times this has been true for yo u. And so the solution is simple:expect things to go wrong, expect things to be different than we hoped or planned, expect the unexpected to happen. And accept it.One quick example: on our recent trip to Japan, I told my kids to expect things to go wrong—they always do o n a trip. I told them, “See it as part of the adventure.”And this worked like a charm. When we inevitablytoo k the wrong train on a foreignlanguage subway system, or when it rained on the day we went to Disney Sea, or wh en we took three trains and walked 10 blocks only to find the National Children's Castle closed on Mondays...they sa id, “It's part of the adventure!”And it was all OK—we d idn't get too bothered. So when the nice glass you bought inevitably falls and breaks some day, you might get upset. But things will be different, if you see the glass as already broken, from th e day you get it. You know it'll break some day, so from the beginning, see it as already broken. Be a timetraveler, or someone with timetraveling vision, and see the future of this glass, from this moment until it inevitably breaks. And when it breaks, you won't be upset or sad—because it was already broken, from the day you got it. And you’ll realize that every moment you have with it is precious.1)、(单选题)The author would probablyagree that________.•A、we should control our anger and irritation •B、we must get well prepared for the future•C、optimism can help us overcome our anger and irritation•D、anger and irritation is a natural part of our life 2)、(单选题)The purpose of the author isto________.•A、tell us his own experience in life•B、advise us how to find peace of mind•C、tell us a happy trip he took with his children •D、ask us to see things from both sides3)、(单选题)By the underlined part (inPara.3), the author tells usto________.•A、get ready for the worst result of things•B、enjoy the process of things•C、expect little from life•D、find the relationship between cause and effect 4)、(单选题)The author’s children couldenjoy their trip to Japanbecause________.•A、everything went smoothly•B、they had a lot of adventures•C、they had expected things to go wrong•D、they could soon get used to the customs there5)、(单选题)We can learn from the passage that theauthor________.•A、often gets angry in his life•B、can adjust his state of mind accordingly•C、always expects others to act in his way•D、always suffers from his anger and irritation参考答案:1) D;2) B;3) A;4) C;5) B;展开解析翻译题34(2分)、If they get the feeling you really care, they'll respond to t hat. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition (学会) of each new skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.11. Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills ________.A) should be avoidedB) is universal among parentsC) sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD) will make him lose interest in learning new things12. In the process of children’s learning new skills parents ________.A) should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB) should not expect too much of themC) should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD) should create as many learning opportunities as possible13. The second paragraph mainly tells us that ________.A) parents should be strict with their childrenB) parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC) parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD) parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation14. The word “precept” (Line 3, Para. 3) probably means “________”.A) idea B) punishmentC) behavior D) instruction15. In moral matters, parents should ________.A) observe the rules themselvesB) be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC) forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD) consistently ensure the security of their childrenPassage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. These days we take for granted the wide variety of music available on the radio. But, this wasn’t always the case. In the early days of radio, stations were capable of broadcasting only a narrow range of sounds, which was all right for the human voice but music didn’t sound very good. There was also a great deal of crackling and other static noises that further interfered with the quality of the sound.A man named Edwin Armstrong, who was a music lover, set out to change this. He invented FM radio, a technology that allowed stations to send a broad range of frequencies that greatly improved the quality of the music. Now, you’d think that this would have made him a millionaire; it didn’t. Radio stations at that time had invested enormous amounts of money in the old technology. So the last thing they wanted was to invest millions more in the new technology. Nor did they want to have to compete with other radio stations that had a superior sound and could put them out of business. So they pressured the Federal Communications Commission —the department of the United States government that regulates radio stations — to put restrictive regulations on FM radio. The result was that its use was limited to a very small area around New England. Of course as we all know, Edwin Armstrong’s FM technology eventually prevailed and was adopted by thousands of stations round the world. But this took years of court battles and he never saw how itcame to affect the lives of almost everyone.16. What is the passage mainly about?A) The invention of musical recording equipment.B) The role of government in mass communications.C) The emergence of a new technology.D) The similarities between old and new radio stations.17. What was the main disadvantage of early radio broadcasting?A) It was very expensive.B) The sound quality was poor.C) It could only transmit a human voice.D) The signal was transmitted over a small area.18. What was the purpose of Edwin Armstrong by inventing FM radio?A) To make it possible for radio stations to broadcast a broad range of sounds.B) To make other radio stations spend a large sum of money on more research.C) To make himself world-famous and therefore earn more money.D) To make radio stations compete with one another.19. Why did the owners of radio stations react negatively to Armstrong’s invention?A) Its use was too strictly regulated. B) They thought it was unsafe.C) It threatened their business. D) It was of poor quality.20. What does the passage imply about Edwin Armstrong?A) He became a millionaire from his invention.B) He was an accomplished musician.C) He worked for the Federal Communications Commission.D) He died before FM became popular.Passage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Psychologist George Spilich and colleagues at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, decided to find out whether, as many smokers say, smoking helps them to “think and concentrate. Spilich put young non-smokers, active smokers and smokers deprived (被剥夺) of cigarettes through a series of tests. In the first test, each subject (试验对象) sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a grouping of 96. In this simple test, smokers, deprived smokers and non-smokers performed equally well. The next test was more complex, requiring all to scan sequences of 20 identical letters and respond the instant one of the letters transformed into a different one. Non-smokers were faster, but under the stimulation of nicotine (尼古丁), active smokers were faster than deprived smokers. In the third test of short-term memory, non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers. The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it. Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details.“As our tests became more complex,” s ums up Spilich, “non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins” He predicts, “smokers might perform adequately at m any jobs-until they got complicated. A smoking airline pilot could fly adequately if no problems arose, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity.”21. The purpose of George Spilich’s experiments is ________.A) to test whether smoking has a positive effect on the mental capacity of smokersB) to show how smoking damages people’s mental capacityC) to prove that smoking affects people’s regular performanceD) to find out whether smoking helps people’s short-term memory22. George Spilich’s experiment was conducted in such a way as to ________.A) compel the subjects to separate major information from minor detailsB) put the subjects through increasingly complex testsC) check the effectiveness of nicotine on smokersD) register the prompt responses of the subjects23. The word “bested” (Line 3, Para. 5) most probably means ________.A) beat B) enviedC) caught up with D) made the best of24. Which of the following statements is true?A) Active smokers in general performed better than deprived smokers.B) Active smokers responded more quickly than the other subjects.C) Non-smokers were not better than other subjects in performing simple tasks.D) Deprived smokers gave the slowest responses to the various tasks.25. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.A) smokers should not expect to become airline pilotsB) smoking in emergency cases causes mental illnessC) no airline pilots smoke during flightsD) smokers may prove unequal to handing emergency casesPassage FourQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) is one of the most important holidays in Ireland. Some even dye their hair green because they believe that on that day the color brings them good luck.On St. Patrick’s Day, the Irish around the world traditionally attend church in the morning and have some celebrations in the afternoon. They dance, drink, parade, and feast. A traditional meal includes meat, cabbage and a special Irish beer called Guinness.St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday that can be traced back more than one thousand years ago, and it is related to a boy named St. Patrick who became an Irish saint when he grew up.He was born to a wealthy family in Wales around the year 385 AD. But when he was sixteen, a band of raiders(劫掠者)took him as a slave to what is now the neighboring island of Ireland.Patrick lived there for several years. Later, he returned to Ireland as a missionary, traveling from village to village and talking about his faith. He explained to people the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit as each of the leaves of a shamrock. There were three leaves, yet they were one plant. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfin-ished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should de-cide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: England is not a big country: from north to south and from east to west it is only about three hundred miles across. (76) But for a small country .it has a surprising range of climate. People who have never visited England, or who have visited only one part of it, often make the mistake of thinking that it is a cold and wet country. Except for the summer months of June to September, this is probably true of the north of England and the Midlands, In the south, however, the climate is much more pleasant. One result is that when people retire from a job in the north they often prefer to move down to the milder south.Perhaps the warmest part of the country is the southwest, which consists of the counties of Devon and Cornwall. The warm Gulf Stream flows across the North Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico and makes the coastal regions of the southwest quite warm. Palm trees, bamboo (竹) and many semi-tropical ( 亚热带的 ) plants grow well in the southwest of England. Flowers and vegetables ripen (成熟) as much as a month earlier than those elsewhere. Farmers in the area obtain a higherprice for their vegetables and flowers because they are ready earlier. (77) In winter there may be several feet of snow in other parts of England but there will probably be no snow at all in the southwest. This may be one of the reasons why the southwest is one of England' s most popular holiday areas.1. The distance from the center of England to the south coast is aboutA. one hundred milesB. three hundred milesC. one hundred and fifty milesD. six hundred miles2. England is a countryA. with a cold and wet climateB. with a surprising climateC. with a pleasant climateD. with a variety of climates3. According to the passage,A. flowers and vegetables from Devon are on the market one month earlierB. farmers in the southwest grow as many vegetables and flowers as farmers elsewhereC. people in the southwest have to pay a higher price for vegetables and flowersD. vegetables in Cornwall ripen as much as a month earlier than flowers4. In the north of England and the Midlands,A. it is cold and wet all the year roundB. the climate is pleasant as a wholeC. it is warm most of the time in a yearD. only the summer is not cold or wet5. In winter, people in Devon and CornwallA. seldom see snowB. never see any snowC. may have several feet of snowD. often see snowPassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage : How can we get rid of garbage? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at thesame time it can save the land to hold garbage. For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped (倾倒) it on empty land. Now, empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas; but they are chemically similar to these fossil (化石) fuels. As we use up our fossil fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have beenburning garbage for years. (78) The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil wa-ter. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the cities garbage each year. Theamount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half mil- lion barrels of oil.Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. (79) Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source thatwe can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of gar-bage piling up on the earth.6. What two problems can man solve by burning garbage?A. The shortage of energy and air pollution.B. The shortage of energy and the land to hold garbage.C. Air pollution and the shortage of fossil fuel.D. Air pollution and the shortage of land to hold garbage.7. Which of the following is not the result of burning garbage?A. The garbage burned is turned into fossil fuels.B. The heat produced is used to boil water.C. The steam produced is used to make electricity.D. The steam produced is used to heat buildings.8. According to the passage which of the following is NOT true?A. About 2 million metric tons of garbage is burned in some power plants in Pads, France each year.B. In a modem society, more and more garbage is produced each year.C. Using garbage is a good way to solve the problem of energy shortage.D. It will be too expensive to use garbage as an energy source.9.What is the author's attitude?A. Delighted.B. Sad.C. Agreeing.D. Disagreeing.10. The best title for the passage may beA. Garbage and the EarthB. Fossil Fuel and GarbageC. Land and GarbageD. Garbage--Energy SourcePassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage: Fire can help people in many ways. But it can be very dangerous. Fire can heat water, warm houses, give light and cook. But fire can bum things, too. It can bum trees, houses, animals or people. Sometimes big fires can bum forests.Nobody knows for sure how people began to use fire. But there are many interesting stories about the first time a man or a woman started a fire. Each statementcontains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information isderived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Answer thequestions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet.Addicted, Really?A)M ental-health specialists disagree over whether to classify compulsive online behavior as addiction—and how to treat it. CRAIG SMALLWOOD, a disabled American war veteran, spent more than 20,000 hours over five years playing an online role-playing game called “Lineage II”. When NCsoft, the South Korean firm behind the game, accused him of breaking the game’s rules and banned him, he was plunged into depression, severe paranoia(偏执) and hallucinations(幻想). He spent three weeks in hospital. He sued NCsoft for fraud and negligence(过失), demanding over $9m in damages and claiming that the company acted negligentlyby failing to warn him of the danger that he would become “addicted” to the game.B)B ut does it make sense to talk of addiction to online activity? Mental-health specialists say three online behaviors can become problematic for many people: video games, pornography(色情作品)and messaging via e-mail and social networks. But there is far less agreement about whether any of this should be called “Internet addiction”—or how to treat it.C)S ome mental-health specialists wanted “Internet addiction” to be included in the fifth version of psychiatry’s bible, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders”, known as DSM-V, which is currently being overhauled(全面修订).The American Medical Association endorsed(赞成)the idea in 2007, only to backtrack(放弃)days later. The American Journal of Psychiatry called Internet addiction a “common disorder” and supported its recognition. Last year the DSM-V drafting group made its decision: Internet addiction would not be included as a “behavioral addiction”—only gambling made the cut—but it said further study was necessary.D)S keptics say there is nothing uniquely addictive about the Internet. Back in 2000 Joseph Walther, a communications professor at Michigan State University, co-wrote an article in which he suggested, tongue in cheek, that the criteria used to call someone an Internet addict might also show that most professors were “addicted” to academia(学术活动). He argued that other factors, such as depression, are the real problem. He stands by that view today. “No scientific evidence has emerged to suggest that Internet use is a cause rather than a consequence of some other sort of issu e,” he says. “Focusing on and treating people for Internet addiction, rather than looking for underlying clinical issues, is unwise.”E)Others disagree. “That would be wrong,” says Kimberly Young, a researcher and therapist who has worked on Internet addiction since 1994. She insists that the Internet, with its powerfully immersive environments, creates new problems that people must learn to navigate(应对). Otherwise, the changing lifestyle will affect the development of the society.F)No one disputes that online habits can turn toxic. Take South Korea, where widespread broadband means that the average high-school student plays video games for 23 hours each week. In 2007 the government estimated that around 210,000 children needed treatment for Internet addiction. Last year newspapers around the globe carried the story of a South Korean couple who fed their infant daughter so little that she starved to death. Instead of caring for the child, the couple spent most nights at an Internet café, sinking hours into a role-playing game in which they raised, fed and cared for a virtual daughter. And several South Korean men have died from exhaustion after marathon, multi-day gaming sessions.G)T he South Korean government has since asked game developers to adopt a gaming curfew (宵禁) for children, to prevent them playing between midnight and 8 am. Ithas also opened more than 100 clinics for Internet addiction and sponsored an “Internet rescue camp” for serious cases.H)B ut compulsive behavior is not limited to gamers. E-mail or web-use behaviors can also show signs of addiction. Getting through a business lunch in which no one pulls out a phone to check their messages now counts as a minor miracle in many quarters. A deluge(泛滥) of self-help books, most recently “Alone Together” b y Sherry Turkle, a social scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, offer advice on how to unplug(去除障碍).I)Pornography is hardly new, either, but the Internet makes accessing it much easier than ever before. When something can be summoned in an instant via broadband, whether it is a game world, an e-mail inbox or pornographic material, it is harder to resist. New services lead to new complaints. When online auction sites first became popular, talk of “eBay addiction” soon followed. Dr Young says women complain to her now about addiction to Facebook—or even to “Farm Ville”, a game playable only within Facebook.J)Treatment centres have popped up around the world. In 2006 Amsterdam’s Smith & Jones facility billed itself as “the first and, currently, the only residential video-game treatment program in the world”. In America the Restart Internet Addiction Recovery Program claims to treat Internet addiction, gaming addiction, and even “texting addiction”. In China, meanwhile, military-style “boot camps” are the preferred way to treat Internet problems. After several deaths, however, scrutiny of the camps has intensified.K)Y et many people like feeling permanently connected. As Arikia Millikan, an American blogger, once put it, “If I could be jacked in at e very waking hour of the day, I would, and I think a lot of my peers would do the same.” Bob La Rose, an Internet specialist at Michigan State University, doesn’t believe her. In his research on college students, he found that most sense when they are “goin g overboard and restore self-control”. Less than 1% have a pathological(病态的) problem, he adds. For most people, Internet use “is just a habit—and one that brings us pleasure.”1.According to Joseph Walther, it is unwise to emphasize the treatment of Internetaddiction instead of seeking for potential clinical issues.2.As online games become popular, treatment centres have sprung up all over theworld.3.After playing online games continuously for days, several South Korean men wereexhausted to death.4.Smallwood sued NCsoft and claimed a huge compensation for fraud and itsnegligence of warning him of the danger of game addiction.5.In South Korea, a gaming curfew for children was adopted to prevent childrenplaying after midnight.6.Internet addiction still needs to be further studied though the DSM-V did notcategorize it as a “behavioral addiction”.7.An Internet specialist found that most college students could realize when they aregoing too far and restore self-control.8.According to mental-health specialists, for many people, video games, pornographyand messaging via e-mail and social networks can become problematic online behaviors.9.People regard it as a small miracle if nobody takes out a phone to read the messagesat a business lunch.10.Kimberly Young insists that people must learn to deal with new problems broughtabout by the Internet.Part III Listening ComprehensionSection ADirections:In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake things for children that children can only do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible.”Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: It can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索) for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.57. The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that ________.A. it is one of the most difficult school coursesB. students spend endless hours in readingC. reading tasks are assigned with little guidanceD. too much time is spent in teaching about reading58. The teaching of reading will be successful if ________.A. teachers can improve conditions at school for the studentsB. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of readingC. teachers can devise the most efficient system for readingD. teachers can make their teaching activities observable59. According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when ________.A. children become highly motivatedB. teacher and learner roles are interchangeableC. teaching helps children in the search for knowledgeD. reading enriches children’s experience61. The main idea of the passage is that ________.A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to readB. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possibleC. reading ability is something acquired rather than taughtD. reading is more complicated than generally believedPassage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage. The failed Skylab will come screaming home to earth in disappointment sometime next month. But it willfall we know not where. That precise information is beyond even the calculations of scientists and their computers. The best they can tell us is that the space station, weighing 77 tons and as high as a 12 story building, will break into hundreds of pieces that will be scattered across a track 100 miles wide and 4,000 miles long.We are again exposed to one of those unexpected adventures, or misadventures, of science that attracts our attention from the boring routines of daily existence and encourages us to think a lot about man’s future. What worries Richard Smith, the Skylab’s director, is the “big pieces” that will come through the atmosphere, Two lumps, weighing 2 tons each, and ten, weighing at least 1,000 pounds each, will come in at speeds of hundreds of miles an hour and if they crash on land they will dig holes up to 100 feet deep. What worries us, with our lack of scientific knowledge and our quick imagination, is both the big and little pieces, although project officials say there is a very small chance that anyone will be injured by them. That’s good to know, but it doesn’t remove the doubts of the millions who still remember the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. That accident took place in 1979 in spite of what the officials had assured us as to the safety of the nuclear reactor.62. Where the Skylab will fall ________.A. is kept secretB. has been made publicC. has been predicted by scientistsD. can’t be predicted even by computers63. The author refers to Three Mile Island ________.A. because he is doubtful about what the officials saidB. because he fears that a piece of the Skylab may strike a nuclear power plantC. because he is afraid of the use of nuclear powerD. because the nuclear reactor there and the Skylab were both built by the same company66. This passage is mainly about the author’s ________.A. interest in the failure of the SkylabB. willingness to give his adviceC. eagerness to see more new scientific discoveriesD. concern that science cannot answer all questionsSection C Blank FillingDirections:In this section, there are ten sentences with ten blanks. It is attractive, simple and a little strange. The Millennium Dome (千禧穹顶)is a huge semi-circle of plastic and steel and it contains the largest public space in the world. It has been built to house an exhibition of all that is best in British life, learning and leisure. The Millennium Dome was designed by Sir Richard Rogers, one of Britain’s most famous architects. His work points the way to new developments in building. Think of it as a giant symbol of the buildings in which we will all be living and working in the near future.Buildings are also a part of history. They express the culture of the times. Sir Richard Rogers is aware of this responsibility. While different designers have individual styles, their work also has a common style. That is: to express the values of the information age. What is an “information age” building? The Dome is a good example. After the Millennium exhibition ends, it will be used for another purpose. Just as people no longer have “jobs for life”, modern buildings are des igned for a number of different uses.Another Richard Roger’s building, the Pompidou Center inFrance, uses the idea that information is communication. Altogether, it has more than one-hundred-million objects. The Library of Congress is open to the public Monday through Saturday, except for government holidays. Anyone may go there and read anything in the collection. But no one is permitted to take books out of the building. The Library of Congress was established in 1800. It started with eleven boxes of books in one room of the Capitol building. By 1814, the collection had increased to about three-thousand books. They were all destroyed that year when the Capitol was burn ed during America’s war with Britain. To help re-build the library, Congress bought the books of President Thomas Jefferson. Mister Jefferson’s collection included seven-thousand books in seven languages. In 1897, the Library moved into its own building, across the street from the Capitol. Today, three buildings hold the library’s collection. The Library of Congress provides books and materials to theUnited States Congress. No one goes through life unharmed. We can only hope that our failures will be mixed with our successes, and we will have had a life well lived.Still, while there are no guarantees that you never fail, there are ways in which you can turn the odds (机会) more in your favor. Specifically, success is most closely related to your reaction to your unavoidable failures. This is true not only for you personally, but also in your role as a business manager and leader. When an organization is trying something new, mistakes are unavoidable. It is up to the leader to create an environment where peopl e aren’t afraid to fail. Mistakes should be seen as a necessary part of the organizational process. Errors are simply a normal by-product of pursuing excellence.Obviously, some mistakes are easier to tolerate (容忍) than others. Action should be taken when an error is made, but, usually, it should be corrective action rather than blame. Mistakes present a unique opportunity to teach and develop your staff. Growth and success can’t come without risk taking, and progress doesn’t happen with out mistakes. As a leader, one of the ways I’ve approached errors is by judging whether the action taken was a “mistake of the heart” or a “mistake of the head”. A mistake of the heart is a situationwhere such an employee does something wrong on purpose and tries to get away with it. I tend to be very serious in such situations. A mistake of the head happens when an employee is working hard to do the right thing, but for some reason, it doesn’t turn out that way. I tend do be very lenient (宽容的) on these types of mistakes. In fact, I have even praised people for making a mistake because their intentions were so good. The goal for a leader isn’t to avoid all possible failures. It’s to avoid errors that can be easily predicted, as well as risks that aren’t wor th the possible costs. Good leaders are willing to take risks to improve their operations. If you never try anything new, you can’t possibly hope to improve. This is true for individuals, and it’s true for organizations.41. The passage is chiefly intended to give advice to ________ .A) business leaders B) the average manC) employees D) losers42. What is the author’s overall attitude toward failures?A)Failures naturally lead to successes.B)We can often predict failures and avoid them.C)We should try our best to avoid failures because they are very harmful.D)Failures may be unavoidable, but we can learn to benefit from them.43. According to the passage, it is essential that an organization leader should ________ .A)be strict with any mistakesB)put up with any mistakesC)pay no attention to the employee’s mistakesD)take a corrective attitude towards mistakes44. The phrase “get away with” (Line 3, Para 5) couldprobably mean “________”.A) get rid of B) do without being punishedC) correct D) stick to45. The author illustrates his viewpoint by ________ .A)introducing his own experienceB)giving examples which are set by other peopleC)pointing out the harm of mistakesD)making a comparison between successes and failuresSection BDirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. “Wait a minute<” someone might say, “are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar?”The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase (公文包) and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I’m Mr. Davis.” Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerveskicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.“All right then,” I said. “Okey, here we go.” Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forests of hands. Every student would yell. “Calm down, you’ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.1. She had never driven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but it made no mention of the crossing. “I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,” she told the BBC.Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely’s stor y in his book When Machines Fail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devic es: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards. The problem with his argument in the book is that it’s not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor singalling system. Or maybe someone hasstudied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say. It’s a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computer-based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it’s also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some combination of these factors. The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology. If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long.6.What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accident?A. She was not familiar with the road.B. It was dark and raining heavily then.C. The railway workers failed to give the signal.D. Her GPS dev ice didn’t tell her about the crossing.7.The phrase “near miss” (Paragraph 2) can best be replaced by______.A. close hitB. heavy lossC. narrow escapeD. big mistake8. Which of the following would Rick Stevenson most probably agree with?A. Modern t echnology is what we can’t live without.B. Digital technology often falls short of our expectation.C. Digital devices are more reliable than they used to be.D. GPS error is not the only cause for Ceely’s accident.9. In the writer’s opinion, Stevenson’s argument is _______.A. one-sidedB. reasonableC. puzzlingD. well-based10. What is the real concern of the writer of this article?A. The major causes of traffic accidents and car thefts.B. The relationship between human and technology.C. The shortcomings of digital devices we use.D. Today, customer “delight” is what companies are trying to achieve in order to keep and increase market share. It is accepted in the marketing industry, and confirmed by a number ofresearchers, that customers receiving good service will promote business by telling up to 12 other people; those treated badly tell tales of woe to up to 20 people. Interestingly, 80 percent of people who feel their complaints are handled fairly will stay loyal.New challenges for customer care have come when people can obtain goods and services through telephone call centers and the Internet. For example, many companies now have to invest (投资) a lot of money in information technology and staff training in order to cope with the “phone rage”---- caused by delays in answering calls, being cut off inmid-conversation or left waiting for long periods.“Many people do not like talking to machines,” says Dr, Storey, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at City University Business School. “Banks, for example, encourage staff at call centers to use customer data to establish instant and good relationship with then. The aim is to make the customer feel they know you and that you can trust them – the sort of comfortable feelings people have during face-to-face chats with their local branch manager.”Recommended ways of creating customer delight include:under-promising and over-delivering (saying that a repair will be carried out within five hours, but getting it done within two) replacing a faulty product immediately; throwing in a gift voucher (购物礼券)as an unexpected “thank you” to regular customers; and always returning calls, even whenthey are complaints.Aiming for customer delight is all very well, but if services do not reach the high level promised, disappointment or worse will be the result. This can be eased by offering an apology and an explanation of why the service did not meet usual standards with empathy(for example, “I know how you must feel”), and possible solutions (replacement, compensation or whatever fairness suggests best meets the case).Airlines face some of the toughest challenges over customer care. Fierce competition has convinced them at that delighting passengers is an important marketing tool, while there is great potential for customer anger over delays caused by weather, unclaimed luggage and technical problems. For British Airways staff, a winning telephone style is considered vital in handling the large volume of calls about bookings and flight times. They are trained to answer quickly, with their names, job title and a “we are here to help” attitude. The company has invested heavily in information technology to make sure that information is available instantly on screen.British Airways also says its customer care policies are applied within the company and staff are taught to regard each other as customers requiring the highest standards of service.Customer care is obviously here to stay and it would be a foolish company that used slogans such as “we do as we please”. On the other hand, the more customers are promised, the greater the risk ofdisappointment.11. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to dispose of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem—how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which utilizes not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bubs and refrigerators as well. The system works so well that no conventional fuel is needed to make the campus’s six buildings comfortable. Some parts of most modern buildings—theaters and offices as well as classrooms are more than amply heated by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat and redistributing it is called “heat recovery.” A few modern buildings recover heat, but the University’s system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and re-use it in others.Along the way, pitt has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student studies, the more heat his body gives off. (76) Male students emit more heat than female students, and the larger a student, the more heat he produces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hardworking, overweight male genius.1. Until recently, body heat has caused problems because it ______.A. was difficult to collectB. came in a variety of formsC. was difficult to get rid ofD. tended to be absorbed by physical objects2. Which of the following is true of the heating system of the Johnstown campus?A. The heat is supplied by human bodies only.B. The heat is supplied by human bodies, other heatemitting objects, andconventional fuel.3.The phr ase “even in winter” (in line 8) most nearly means ______.A. if the winter is especially warmB. during all of the year except the winterC. in the winter as well as in other seasonsD. during the evenings in the winter4. According to the passage which of the following would produce the LEAST amountof heat?A. A fat female who studies hard.B. A thin female who does not study.C. A fat male who does not study.D. A thin male who studies hard.Passage 2(77) Heredity(遗传) is not the only thing that influences our color. Where we live and how we live after we are born are important too. For instance, our genes influence how fat or thin we are. But our weight depends mainly upon how much we eat and how much exercise we get. In the same way, our skin color depends to a large extent upon how much sunshine we get. When summer arrives and light-colored people go to the beaches, some will tan darkly, some will tan lightly and few will not tan at all. Each one has inherited a different ability to tan, but the differences do not appear until the conditions are right. An outdoor man will soon become pale if he changes to an indoor job, while a desk clerk will take on tan after a short vacation in the sun.Sometimes people decide that being tanned is better than being pale. Sometimes they decide the opposite.Centuries ago, most of the people in Europe were peasants and they had to work in the fields all day. Noblemen, on the other hand, did not have to work. They stayed indoors and remained pale. You could always tell a nobleman from a peasant because a peasant had a tan. As a result, a shin so pale that the veins (血管) showed was considered a mark of great beauty.During the Industrial Revolution things changed. Farmers left their fields and went to work in factories, mines and mills. Working for long hours in dimly-lit factories and mines made their skins pale. (78) Wealthy people, however, could afford to travel so sunny countries. They had the leisure to lie around on the beaches and get tan. Having a tan became a sign of wealth. In Western Europe and North America pale skin is no longer desirable. Instead of bleaching themselves white with lemon juice, many women spend their time under a sun-lamp. The desire for a quick tan has led to the invention of pills and lotions(涂剂)that darken the skin artificially without exposure to sunlight. These pills and lotions can be bought by anyone at any drugstore. A rich man can spend hundreds of dollars on avacation in the sunny West Indies and get his suntan there. But his lowest-paid clerk can have what looks like the same tan out of a bottle for a few cents.6.Besides genes, our skin color has much to do with __________.A. exerciseB. weightC. foodD. sunshine7.When summer comes and the light-colored people go to the beaches, _____.A. all of them will tan darklyB. few of them will tan darklyC. many of them will not tan at allD. some of them will not tan at all8.Centuries ago in Europe, it was considered of great beauty to have _____.A. pale skinB. light-colored skinC. dark-colored skinD. a suntan9.During the Industrial Revolution people began to like to have a tan because it wasa sign of _______.A. good healthB. great strengthC. wealthD. youth10.Pills and lotions have been invented in Western Europe and North America_______.A. to protect people from sunburnB. to make people look wealthyC. to smooth people’s skinD. to help people to have a quick tanPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage .I don’t often lose things and I’m especially careful with money , so I was quite surprised when I reached for my wallet and it wasn’t there . If you hold too tightly to your partner, it's going to cause resentment and anger. If you're completely separate, you'll both be lonely and disconnected. You need balance. So you have to talk about how you'll achieve that."The right balance It's different for every couple. "Having a conversation about time can be difficult, but it's important for both partners to process those feelings out loud," Dr. Stephen says. "You should not be accusing and act as a judge—ask the difficult questions, but do it in a loving way. You could say something like, 'How are we going to be as individuals and how are we going to be as a couple' "Barbara and Chris Christensen have achieved the balance that works for them. In addition to daily routines that keep them close —including about 10 minutes for a daily check-in and about a half hour of relaxation time—they each maintain separate interests and friendships."We have found that we need time apart," Barbara says. "I have a group of women friends that I have known for the last 30 years. We have dinner out once a month. We women also have parties and weekend or weeklong vacations as a group at a beach or somewhere.Chris, a former fighter pilot, has many aviation-oriented (航空的) groups and friends and also a poker-playing group. This is not always easy to provide as their behavior can sometimes be irritating. If they get excited or upset then they may become more difficult to look after. Although sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary.Failing memory makes it difficult for the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted. The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is missing and help them make sense of what is going on. You must use every opportunity to provide information but remember to keep itsimple and straightforward.“Good morning, Mum. This is Fiona, your daughter. It is eight o’clock, so if you get up now, we can have breakfast downstairs.”When the elderly makes confused statements e.g. about going out to his or her old employment or visiting a dead relative, correct in a calm matter-of-fact fashion: “You don’t work in the office any more. You are retired now. Will you come and help me with the dishes”We rely heavily on the information provided by signposts, clocks, calendars and newspapers. These assist us to organize and direct our behavior. Confused old people need these aids all the time to compensate for their poor memory. Encourage them to use reminder boards or diaries for important coming events and label the contents of different cupboards and drawers. Many other aids such as information cards, old photos, scrap books, and addresses or shopping list could help in individual case.16. Why can’t we sometimes keep calm in front of old peopleA)Because old people sometimes annoy us.B)Because old people sometimes don’t understand us.C)Because we are sometimes in a bad mood.D)Because we are sometimes in a hurry.17. What does the author encourage us when we talk with old peopleA) To do as little as possible.B) To do as much as they can.C) To help others when needed.D) To be patient and not get upset.18. What is the main idea of the passageA)What happens to old people with failing memory.B)How to help old people with failing memory.C)Why old people have poor memory.D)How to improve bad memory.Passage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. It is often the case that when something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,”Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or“I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault;the car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on the person. You should accept that the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do hisjob well. This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stop on for success.21. The same problem, on a smaller scale, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little prospect of raising the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long term projects. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in future profits. This they do by issuing stocks and shares in the businessthrough the Stock Exchange. By doing so,they can put into circulation the savings of individuals and institutions, both at home and overseas. When the saver needs his money back, he does not have to go to the company with whom he originally placed it. Instead, he sells his shares through a stockbroker to some other saver who is seeking to invest his money. Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provided by the Government or by local authorities. Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, railways, this country could not function. All these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised though taxes alone. The Government, local authorities, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to the Stock Exchange. There is hardly a man or woman in this country whose job or whose standard of living does not depend on the ability of his or her employers to raise money to finance new development. In one way or another, this new money must come from the savings of the country. The Stock Exchange exists to provide a channel through which these savings can reach those who need finance.26.Almost all companies involved in new production must ______.A) rely on their own financial resourcesB) persuade the banks to provide long-term loanC) borrow large sums of money from friends and people they knowD) depend on the population as a whole for finance27.The money which enables these companies to go ahead with theirprojects is ______.A) invested in different companies on the Stock ExchangeB) exchanged for part ownership in the Stock ExchangeC) raised by the selling of shares in the companiesD) repaid to its original owners as soon as possible28.When the savers want their money back, they ______.A) put their shares in the company back on the marketB) ask another company to obtain their money for themC) look for other people to borrow money fromD) transfer their money to a more successful company29.All the essential services on which we depend are ______.A) run by the Government or our local authoritiesB) in constant need of financial supportC) financed wholly by rates and taxesD) unable to provide for the needs of the population30.The Stock Exchange makes it possible for the government, localauthorities and nationalized industries ______.A) to make everybody lend money to themB) to borrow as much money as they wishC) to make certain everybody saves moneyD) to raise money to finance new developmentsPart III Vocabulary and Structure (25 minutes)Directions:There are 25 incomplete sentences in this part.
