课堂10分钟达标Nearly all the visitors to the southeast France pay avisit to Monaco. Lying near the French-Italian border,Monaco is not a part of France, but a separate principality(公国)—though it is surrounded by its great neighbors.Monaco became a principality in the 16th century after being owned by a family member of a certain Italian king. The French and Italians, however, soon came to protect it one after another until 1861, when it became its own master again.Facing the blue Mediterranean, Monaco is mainly made up of two cities, Monaco-ville, where the palace for the Prince stands, and Monte Carlo, which is a wonderful place for visitors. Every year, about half a million people come to Monaco, nearly 25 times as much as its population.Believe it or not, Monaco has no soldiers or policemen of its own. Law and order is kept by the French police, and France stands for it in its foreign affairs, even the money used in Monaco is the franc, too.Ⅰ. I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s,with great interest. My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium, Netherlands and West Germany.I have vivid memories even today of going to Mumbai airport at night all excited about finally going abroad. I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew. The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me, who is otherwise scared of flying. After spending almost two weeks in Europe, we took the Lufthansa airport express from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt airport, for our return flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine (莱茵河), it was simply an unforgettable experience. I was in a sombre mood on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.Being the first airline to take me overseas, Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart. Even today, I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline. Flying, in general, for me, has always been an ordeal (terrible and painful experience). Flying on Lufthansa, however, is something I always have and always will look forward to.【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。

课后阅读作业七Module 2Period 3Ⅰ. 阅读理解In most developed countries the government providesfree education for children because it realizes that educated citizens are useful to the country in their later life. Most countries also have private education. This means that parents can pay to send their children to certain schools. People who agree with this system say that it gives parents a larger choice of schools. Other people think that private schools give the children who go to them an unfair advantage over other children. At the age of three, many children go to nursery school. Two or three years later, they enter a primary school. At the age of 11 they go to a secondary school. Then they may have a chance of continuing their studies at a university or college.Universities and colleges are places where some young people go to continue their education after leaving school. Most university students study one main subject, though they may also study a number of others. Teaching is usually by lectures, or by discussions between a lecturer and students. Most students stay at university for three or four years. At the end of that, they take an examination. If they pass, they receive theirBachelor’s degree, usually a BA, which is short for Bachelor of Arts, or a BS for Bachelor of Science. Some students study for several more years in order to get higher degree, such as a MA or a PhD.Most university courses don’t train students to do a certain job. Colleges, on the other hand, usually teach skills which enable students to follow a career(职业), such as clothing design, or business studies.【语篇概述】文章主要介绍了发达国家的教育方面的信息, 包括幼儿园、初中、高中和大学以及为什么教育是重要的。

2017-2018学年高中英语外研版必修三习题:课下能力提升一 含答案 精品

Module 1 课下能力提升(一)阅读理解AAre the British people Europeans? This may seem a strange question to Africans and Asians, who tend to think of all white men as Europeans. But the British, when they are in Britain, do not regard themselves as Europeans. The Europeans, to them, are those rather excitable foreigners from the other side of the English Channel, who have never learnt how to speak English. Europe is “the Continent”:a place full of interest for British tourists, but also the source of almost all the wars in which Britain has ever been involved. Thus, although geographically speaking Britain is a part of Europe, yet the fact that it is a separate island has made its people feel very, very insular (孤立的). They feel, and in many ways are, different from the rest of Europe and they sometimes annoy continental nations by failing to support them, or even to understand them, in time of need.Where did the British people come from? This is an extraordinary interesting question, since they are a mixture of many different races, and all these races invaded Britain at various times from Europe. Nobody knows very much about Britain before the Romans came during the first century B.C., but there had been at least three invasions before that. The first of these was by a darkhaired Mediterranean race called the Iberians. The other two were by Celtic tribes: first the Gaels, whose descendants are the modern Scots and Irish, some of whom still speak the Gaelic language;and second the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people whom the Romans conquered. The Romans gave the Britons a good deal of their civilization, but they never settled in Britain in very large numbers, so the British race survived until the overthrow of the Roman Empire by the“barbarians”, i.e. the numerous Germanic tribes which overran the whole of Western Europe.1.The purpose of the passage is to________.A.talk about EuropeansB.discuss the origin of British peopleC.argue for the superiority of British peopleD.compare the Europeans with Africans and Asians2.It can be known from the passage that________.A.most people think white people are EuropeansB.there are many Africans and Asians living in EuropeC.white men are Europeans in the eyes of Africans and AsiansD.the British people think of themselves as Europeans3.Why do the British people feel very insular?A.They are different from those people in the continent.B.They sometimes fail to support the continental countries in time of need.C.They are separated geographically from the continent.D.They are considered very difficult to understand.4.Which of the following might be discussed after this passage?A.The Germanic tribes which invaded Britain.B.The civilization the Romans gave Britain.C.The Romans who did not settle in Britain.D.The survival of the British people in the first century B.C.BBeacon Rock State ParkThere are 33 tent sites in this park, as well as primitive (原始的) camping areas. According to the scientists from the University of Exeter, plants may keep communicating with each other through a secret “unseen”language. For their experiment, the scientists picked a cabbage plant that is known to send out a gas when its surface is cut. In order to get video evidence of the communication, they changed the cabbage gene by adding the protein — luciderase (虫荧光素酶), which is what makes fireflies (萤火虫) glow in the dark. When the changed cabbage plant was in full bloom, they cut a leaf off with a pair of scissors, and almost immediately, thanks to the luciderase, they could see the plant sending out “methyl jasmonate (茉莉酸甲酯)”.While this was a known fact, what was surprising was the fact that the minute this gas began to give out, the nearby cabbage plants seemed to sense some kind of danger and started to send out a gas that they normally have to keep predators (捕食者) like caterpillars (毛虫) away. What the scientists are not sure is whether the plants are trying to warn the otherleaves or the near plants about the danger — something that will require further research. However, the team, which is led by Professor Nick Smirnoff, is quite excited about the findings because this is the first time it has been proved that plants do not live a passive life, but actually move, sense and even communicate with each other. However, before you get all concerned, they are quite sure that plants do not feel the pain when they are cut, since they do not have nerves — so go ahead and bite into that juicy carrot!9.What's the best title of the passage?A.Plants Can Send Some GasB.Plants Can Communicate with Each OtherC.The “Unseen” Language of PlantsD.Plants Can't Feel Pain10.What does the un derlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 mean?A.Gardeners. 2017-2018学年高中英语外研版必修三习题:课下能力提升十六 含答案 精品

Module 4 课下能力提升(十六)Ⅰ.阅读理解Climate change will force exhausted birds migrating (迁徙) to Europe from Africa to travel further, according to a new study. The annual voyage of some species, which fly north in search of food and suitable habitats, could increase by as much as 400 kilometres, the research found. “Marathon migrations for some birds are set to become even longer,” said Stephen Willis, a professor at Durham University in Britain and the main architect of the study. “This is bad news for birds like the Whitethroat, a common farmland bird. The added distance is a great threat. As temperatures rise and habitats change, birds will face their biggest challenge since the Pleistocene era, which ended 11,000 years ago,” he said in a statement.About 500 million birds migrate each year from Africa, some weighing as little as nine grams. To complete a voyage that can be thousands of kilometres long, birds have to fatten themselves up to twice their normal weight. Some even shrink (收缩) their internal organs (内脏) to become more fuelefficient, so any additional distance may be dangerous. The study, which is published in a journal, finds that from 2071 to 2100, 9 out of 17 species examined are going to face longer migrations, particularly birds that cross the Sahara Desert. Some birds traverse the Sahara and the Mediterranean Sea in one go, while others have a break in northern Africa before crossing. Many fly at night, when temperatures are cooler.A few birds — such as the Blackcap — have started to adapt by spending winters in Britain, but such behaviour is rare, the study says. The study predicts that the migration distance of the Orphean Warbler will jump from 2,700 kilometres to between3,050 and 3,350 kilometres, with even longer increases for the Subalpine and Barred Warblers.1.Some birds migrate to Europe from Africa to ________.A.find food and suitable habitatsB.avoid being caught by huntersC.build new homes for their babiesD.escape from the crowded Africa2.To complete the marathon migrations, some birds have to do all of the following things EXCEPT ________.A.becoming smallerB.putting on more weightC.reducing the size of their internal organsD.flying at night when temperatures are cooler3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.About 500 million birds migrate each year from Africa.B.9 out of 17 bird species examined will face longer migrations in the next decade.C.Most birds have started to spend winters in Britain except for the Blackcap.D.The migration distance of the Subalpine and Barred Warblers will increase by 650 kilometres.4.The underlined word “traverse”in the fourth paragraph probably means “________”.A.live in B.leave forC.cross D.visitⅡ.任务型阅读Everyone knows English is one of the most important subjects in middle schools. And when I first moved here and my post office box was always empty, you always cheered me on. Irishborn Campbell and Japanese Omura won half of the prize for discovering a new drug, avermectin (除虫菌类), that has helped the battle against river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, (淋巴丝虫病) as well as showing effectiveness against other parasitic diseases. The Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, an 85yearold female scientist, was awarded the other half of the prize for the discovery of artemisinin (青蒿素), a drug cure for malaria (疟疾) that has saved millions of lives all over the world, especially in the developing world. When the news broke that Tu won the Nobel Prize, there were cheers as well as doubts. It also has highlighted differences in prizeawarding practices between China and the West. Some said the achievement was the result of collective efforts by lots of Chinese scientists, so it was unfair to award the prize only to Tu. Indeed, Chinese science awards are mainly presented to projects, instead of individual scientists. But Western awards tend to honor individual scientists who are the first to come up with a new idea or method.Li Zhenzhen, a researcher of the China Academy of Sciences said that the West believes that the advancement of science comes from individuals' creative minds. In 1969, Tu started to hold a government project aimed at eliminating malaria.Tu and her teammates experimented with 380 extracts in 2,000 candidate recipes before theyfinally succeeded in getting the pure substance qinghaosu, later known as artemisinin. In 2011, Tu was awarded the Lasker Debakey Clinical Medical Research Award, commonly referred to as “America's Nobel Prize”.4.Why Tu Youyou could be awarded the Nobel Prize for?A.Because she discovered the avermectin, a drug cure for malaria.B.Because she contributed to the traditional Chinese medicine.C.Because she discovered the artemisinin which shows effectiveness against other parasitic diseases.D.Because she has saved millions of lives for the discovery of artemisinin.5.What is the difference in prizeawarding practices between China and the West?A.Chinese science awards are mainly presented to individual scientists, instead of projects.B.Chinese believes that the advancement of science comes from individuals' creative minds.C.Western awards tend to honor individual scientists who are the first to come up with a new idea or method.D.Western awards are presented to both individual scientists and projects.6.How old was Tu Youyou when she was awar ded the“America's Nobel Prize”?A.85. 课后阅读作业一Module 1Period 1Ⅰ. 阅读理解A(2016·四川高考) In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的)people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地)of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law. However, their remote locations mean that the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of“lawlessness”in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the efforts of a Frenchman from Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250, 000 living in its capital, Cayenne.“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I hav e worked there on and off for almost ten years, ”says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I seeit as an area of freedom. ”“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life, ”continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly. ”His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings withitnot only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.【语篇概述】本文是一篇说明文, 文章介绍了法属圭亚那雨林地区的土著居民的生活。
