高一英语早读材料一
The Hare with Many Friends 拥有众多朋友的兔子
A Hare was very popular with the other animals who all described themselves to be her friends.
But one day she heard the hounds(猎狗) coming and hoped to escape them with the help of her friends.
So, she went to the horse, and asked him to carry her away from the hounds on his back. But he refused, saying that he had important work to do for his master(主人). "I felt sure," he said, "that all your other friends would come to help you."
She then asked the bull, and hoped that he would fight the hounds with his horns. The bull replied: "I am very sorry, but I have an appointment(约会) with a lady, but I am sure that our friend-- the goat will do what you want."
The goat, however, feared that his back might do her some harm if he took her upon it. “The dear, I felt sure, was the proper friend to ask for help.”
So she went to the dear and told him the case. The dear replied: "My dear friend. I do not like to get into the trouble, as hounds have been known to eat dear as well as hares."
The hare then asked, as a last hope, the calf, who regretted that he was unable to help her, as he did not like to take the responsibility upon himself, because so many animals older than him had refused the task.
By this time the hounds were quite near. The Hare said to herself, "Those who have many friends have no friends." And the Hare took to her heels and luckily escaped.
Sand and Stone 沙子和石头
The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped(掌掴) the other one in the face.
The one who got slapped felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: “Today my best friend slapped me in the face.”
They kept on walking until they found an oasis(绿洲), where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him.
After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: “Today my best friend saved my lif e.”
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?
The other friend replied: “When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engrave(雕刻) it in stone where no wind can ever erase it.
Learn to write your hurts in the sand and to carve(雕刻) your benefits in stone.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate him, a day to love him, but an entire life to forget him.
Send this phrase to the people you will never forget .It is a short message to let them know that you will never forget them.
Take the time to live.
Time keeps going
All my father ever asked of me was to hold his hammer(铁锤) while he repaired something, so we could have some time to talk to each other.
For 22 years, after I left home for college, he called me every Sunday at 9 am. He was always interested in my life and how my family was doing, and I never once heard him complain about(抱怨) his own life.
Nine years ago when I purchased my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days painting it. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked for was a glass of iced tea and for me to hold a paint brush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy.
Five years ago, at age 71, my father spent five hours putting together a swingset (秋千组) for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea and talk to him. But again, I was too busy.
Four years ago, my father drove all the way from Denver to Topeka, with an
eight-foot Colorado blue spruce (蓝叶云杉) in his trunk, so that my husband and I could have a part of Colorado growing on our land. I was preparing for a trip that weekend and couldn’t spend much time with him.
Then, one day, my father telephoned me as usual(像往常一样), this time from my sister’s home in Florida. We talked about the tree he had brought me, “Fat Albert”, but that morning he called it “Fat Oscar”, and he seemed to have forgotten some things. I had to get to church, so I cut the conversation short.
The call came at 4:40 pm that day: my father was in the hospital in Florida with an aneurysm (动脉瘤). I got on a plane immediately, and on the way I thought of all the times I had not taken the time to talk to my father. I realized that I had no idea who he was or what his deepest thoughts were. I vowed (发誓) that when I arrived, I would make up for lost time.
I arrived in Florida at 1 am. My father had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk to me.

Sentence bank
1. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done
释义:他不愿意让我花钱找人来干这件事。
分析:句中的情态动词would表示一种意愿。例如:I would do anything to protect my children. 另外在have it done结构中,done作宾语补足语,表示被动。
2. This time it was he who did not have time to talk to me.
释义:这次是他没有时间跟我说话了。
分析:句中出现了强调句型It is/ was… that/ who…。注意在该句型中,当被强调的是人时,用that和who都可以;当被强调的是物时,只能用that
