T ext 5If ambition is to be well regarded, the rewards of ambition -- wealth, distinction, control over one’s destiny -- must be deemed worthy of the sacrifices made on ambition’s behalf. If the tradition of ambition is to have vitality, it must be widely shared; and it especially must be highly regarded by people who are themselves admired, the educated not least among them. In an odd way, however, it is the educated who have claimed to have given up on ambition as an ideal. What is odd is that they have perhaps most benefited from ambition -- if not always their own then that of their parents and grandparents. There is heavy note of hypocrisy in this, a case of closing the barn door after the horses have escaped -- with the educated themselves riding on them.Certainly people do not seem less interested in success and its signs now than formerly. Summer homes, European travel, BMWs -- the locations, place names and name brands may change, but such items do not seem less in demand today than a decade or two years ago. What has happened is that people cannot confess fully to their dreams, as easily and openly as once they could, lest they be thought pushing, acquisitive and vulgar. Instead, we are treated to fine hypocritical spectacles, which now more than ever seem in ample supply: the critic of American materialism with a Southampton summer home; the publisher of radical books who takes his meals in three-star restaurants; the journalist advocating participatory democracy in all phases of life, whose own children are enrolled in private schools. For such people and many more perhaps not so exceptional, the proper formulation is, “Succeed at all costs but avoid appearing ambitious.”The attacks on ambition are many and come from various angles; its public defenders are few and unimpressive, where they are not extremely unattractive. As a result, the support for ambition as a healthy impulse, a quality to be admired and fixed in the mind of the young, is probably lower than it has ever been in the United States. This does not mean that ambition is at an end, that people no longer feel its stirrings and promptings, but only that, no longer openly honored, it is less openly professed. Consequences follow from this, of course, some of which are that ambition is driven underground, or made sly. Such, then, is the way things stand: on the left angry critics, on the right stupid supporters, and in the middle, as usual, the majority of earnest people trying to get on in life.67. It is generally believed that ambition may be well regarded if ________.[A] its returns well compensate for the sacrifices[B] it is rewarded with money, fame and power[C] its goals are spiritual rather than material[D] it is shared by the rich and the famous68. The last sentence of the first paragraph most probably implies that it is ________.[A] customary of the educated to discard ambition in words[B] too late to check ambition once it has been let out[C] dishonest to deny ambition after the fulfillment of the goal[D] impractical for the educated to enjoy benefits from ambition69. Some people do not openly admit they have ambition because ________.[A] they think of it as immoral[B] their pursuits are not fame or wealth[C] ambition is not closely related to material benefits[D] they do not want to appear greedy and contemptible70. From the last paragraph the conclusion can be drawn that ambition should be maintained________.[A] secretly and vigorously[B] openly and enthusiastically[C] easily and momentarily[D] verbally and spiritually。

(Text5)Text5Much of the language used to describe monetary policy, such as "steering the economy to a soft landing" or "a touch on the brakes", makes it sound like a precise science. Nothing could be further from the truth. The link between interest rates and inflation is uncertain. And there are long, variable lags before policy changes have any effect on the economy. Hence the analogy that likens the conduct of monetary policy to driving a car with a blackened windscreen, a cracked rear view mirror and a faulty steering wheel.Given all these disadvantages, central bankers seem to have had much to boast about of late. Average inflation in the big seven industrial economies fell to a mere 2.3% last year, close to its lowest level in 30 years, before rising slightly to 2.5% this July. This is a long way below the double digit rates which many countries experienced in the 1970s and early 1980s.It is also less than most forecasters had predicated. In late 1994 the panel of economists which The Economist polls each month said that America's inflation rate would average 3.5% in 1995. In fact, it fell to 2.6% in August, and expected to average only about 3% for the year as a whole. In Britain and Japan inflation is running half a percentage point below the rate predicted at the end of last year. This is no flash in the pan; over the past couple of years, inflation has been consistently lower than expected in Britain and America.Economists have been particularly surprised by favorable inflation figures in Britain and the United States, since conventional measures suggest that both economies, and especially America's, have little productive slack. America's capacity utilization, for example, his historically high levels earlier this year, and its jobless rate (5.6% in August) has fallen bellow most estimates of the natural rate of unemployment — the rate below which inflation has taken off in the past. Why has inflation proved so mild? The most thrilling explanation is, unfortunately, a little defective. Some economists argue that powerful structural changes in the world have up ended the old economic models that were based upon the historical link between growth and inflation.67.From the passage we learn that _____.A)there is a definite relationship between inflation and interest ratesB)economy will always follow certain modelsC)the economic situation is better than expectedD)economists had foreseen the present economic situation68.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A)Making monetary policies is comparable to driving a carB)An extremely low jobless rate will lead to inflationC)A high unemployment rate will result from inflationD)Interest rates have an immediate effect on the economy69.The sentence "This is no flash in the pan" (Line 5, Paragraph 3) means that _____.A)the low inflation rate will last for some timeB)the inflation rate will soon riseC)the inflation will disappear quicklyD)there is no inflation at present70.The passage shows that the author is _____ the present situation.A)critical ofB)puzzled byC)disappointed atD)amazed at。

The Power of Perseverance in the Pursuit ofDreamsIn the fast-paced and often unpredictable world of modern life, the journey towards achieving one's dreams can be a challenging and demanding endeavor. This is especially true when faced with obstacles and setbacks that seem insurmountable. However, as the fifth text of the 2000 Graduate Entrance Examination (GEE) aptly illustrates, perseverance and determination are the key ingredients in overcoming these challenges and ultimately achieving success. The text, which focuses on the life and achievements of a renowned scientist, Dr. Jane Goodall, serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of perseverance. Despite facing numerous difficulties and doubts in her quest to study chimpanzees in their natural habitat, Dr. Goodall never gave up. Her坚定的信念和不屈不挠的精神enabled her to overcome obstacles and make groundbreaking discoveries about chimpanzee behavior. The lesson here is clear: perseverance is not just about stubbornly sticking to one's goals despite setbacks, but about learning from failures, adapting to changing circumstances, and never losing sight of the end goal. Itis about finding the balance between persistence and flexibility, between staying focused and being open to new possibilities. In the world of academics, perseverance is perhaps even more crucial. The journey towards acquiring knowledge and achieving academic success often requires years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Students must bewilling to put in the hours, endure the frustrations, and persevere in the face of difficulties. Only through consistent effort and dedication can they hope to achieve their academic goals. Moreover, perseverance also plays a vital role in personal growth and development. It is through persevering in the face of challenges that we learn to grow and become stronger. Whether it's overcoming a personal fear, achieving a fitness goal, or simply staying committed to a daily routine, perseverance is the key to success. However, it is important to note that perseverance does not mean stubbornly sticking to a single path. Sometimes, the wisest course of action is to reevaluate one's goals and objectives in the light of changing circumstances. This kind of flexible perseverance allows us to adapt to new situations and seize new opportunities that may arise. In conclusion, the power of perseverance is an invaluable asset in the pursuit of dreams. It is thedriving force that propels us forward in the face of difficulties and setbacks. By combining perseverance with adaptability and a willingness to learn from failures, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. Let us draw inspiration from Dr. Jane Goodall's life and embrace the power of perseverance in our own journey towards success.

(Text5)Text 5Scattered around the globe are more than 100 small regions of isolated volcanic activity known to geologists as hot spots. Unlike most of the worlds volcanoes, they are not always found at the boundaries of the great drifting plates that make up the earths surface; on the contrary, many of them lie deep in the interior of a plate. Most of the hot spots move only slowly, and in some cases the movement of the plates past them has left trails of dead volcanoes. The hot spots and their volcanic trails are milestones that mark the passage of the plates. That the plates are moving is not beyond dispute. Africa and South America, for example, are moving away from eath other as new material is injected into the sea floor between them. The complementary coastlines and certain geological features that seem to span the ocean are reminders of where the two continents were once joined. The relative motion of the plates carrying these continents has been constructed in detail, but the motion of one plate with respect to another cannot readily be translated into motion with respect to the earths interior. It is not possible to determine whether both continents are moving in opposite direcitons or whether one continent is stationary and the other is drifting away from it. Hot spots, anchored in the deeper layers of the earth, provide the measuring instruments needed to resolve the quesiton. From an analysis of the hot spot popultion it appears that the African plate is stationary and that it has not moved during the past 30 million years. The significance of hot spots is not confined to their role as a frame of reference. It now appears that they also have an important influence on the geophysical processes that propel the plates across the globe. When a continental plate come to rest over a hot spot, the material rising from deeper layer creates a broad dome. As the dome grows, it develops seedfissures(cracks); in at least a few cases the continent may break entirely along some of these fissures, so that the hot spot initiates the formation of a new ocean. Thus just as earlier theories have explanied the mobility of the continents, so hot spots may explain their mutability(inconstance).67.The author believes that _____ .A)the motion of the plates corresponds to that of the earths interiorB)the geological theory about drifting plates has been proved to be trueC)the hot spots and the plates move slowly in opposite directionsD)the movement of hot spots proves the continents are moving apart68.That Africa and South America were once joined can be deduced from the fact that _____ .A)the two continents are still moving in opposite direcitonsB)they have been found to share certain geological featuresC)the African plates has been stable for 30 million yearsD)over 100 hot spots are scattered all around the globe69.The hot spot theory may prove useful in explaining _____ .A)the structure of the African platesB)the revival of dead volcanoesC)the mobility of the continentsD)the formation of new oceans70.The passage is mainly about _____ .A)the features of volcanic activitiesB)the importance of the theory about drifting platesC)the significance of hot spots in geophysical studiesD)the process of the formation of volcanoes。

Lesson FiveTEXTOPEN CHAMBER STRATIFIED CHARGE ENGINESResearch and development efforts over several decades have resulted in a number of stratified charge SI piston engine concepts which appear to have potential for reduced exhaust emissions. As the name implies, the fuel is not distributed uniformly throughout the charge. The design goal was originally to improve part load fuel economy by operating the engine at or close to full throttle, and control the power by variation in fuel supply alone. To achieve satisfactory combustion, an easily ignitable mixture (generally fuel-rich) is created in the vicinity of the spark plug with air filling the remainder of the combustion chamber. As load increases, the volume fraction filled with ignitable mixture is increases. The improvement in efficiency comes from lower gas temperatures during combustion and expansion reducing dissociation, from reduced pumping losses, and from increased compression ratio permitted by the less severe detonation characteristics.A number of these stratified charge engine concepts, originally developed for improved fuel economy and multifuel capability, permit operation with overall fuel-air mixtures significant leaner than chemically correct, and with significant charge dilution with recycled exhaust gas. As a result, HC, CO and NO emissions can be reduced below equivalent conventional engine levels. Potential additional emissions problems with some of these stratified charge engines are soot and aldehydes, however. The concepts can be divided into open-chamber and divided-chamber stratified charge engines, depending on whether the aerodynamics of the fuel-air mixing process, or the geometry of a precombustion chamber, is the primary means of achieving the desired nonuniformity in fuel distribution. Here we will only describe one of these concepts, i.e., open-chamber stratified charge enginesFigure 1 shows schematics of two open chamber concepts now under extensive development. Figure 1 (a) is the Ford Programmed Combustion Process (PROCO) engine;Figure.1 (b) is the Texaco Controlled Combustion System (TCCS) engine. Both these engines employ a combination of inlet port swirl, cup-in-piston geometry, and high-pressure timed combustion-chamber fuel injection to achieve a local fuel-rich easily ignitable mixture near the spark plug, while the overall fuel-air ratio supplied to the engine is fuel lean.Despite the obvious similarities, the differences between these concepts are significant. The important differences are the fuel injection timing and the characteristics of the fuel spray. The PROCO concept employs a relatively low pressure fuel injector mounted on the cylinder axis; the injector tip is designed to produce a wide angle (about 90°) hollow cone fuel spray, with large droplets ( ~100μm), which have low initial velocities (~50m/s) relative to conventional diesel engine practice. Fuel injection starts early, about half way through the compression stroke. As a result, substantial vaporization of the fuel and mixing with air occurs before combustion, though large fuel-air ratio gradients persist throughout the combustion process. In the TCCS engine, fuel injection more closely resembles that in a diesel engine. The injectorand fuel pump are standard diesel engine components, the injector is angled as shown in Fig. 1(b) and the fuel spray directed into the cup to move with air swirl towards the spark plug location. Fuel injection starts just before combustion commences. Fuel droplet sizes are typical of diesel practice (~ 10μm) and initial droplet velocities are high ( ~ 200 m/s).The details of the combustion and emissions formation processes in these engines are not well understood. However, the emissions data which are available provide useful clues as to the events which occur inside the combustion chamber.Lavoie and Blumberg have analyzed the relationship between NO emissions and mixture stratification in the PROCO engine. Figure 2 shows the variation in NO exhaust concentration with overall fuel-air equivalence ratio for normal stratified engine operation, and for the same engine at the same load and speed, but with fuel and air premixed in a vapor tank outside the engine. For close to stoichiometric operation, stratification reduces NO emissions; for very lean operation premixed operation gives lower emissions. Since burning occupied roughly the same crank angle interval in each case, mixture stratification rather than different charge burning rates is the primary cause of this difference. The theoretical curves were developed from the work of Blumberg and Kummer by adding charge stratification to the analysis. Best agreement with the data trends was obtained by burning from richer-than-average to leaner-than-average mixture over the combustion duration interval, and by superposing small scale mixture stratification in the form of a gaussian fuel-air equivalence ratio distribution at each point in this mean combustion trend. 50% richer to 50% leaner than average with a local equivalence ratio standard deviation of 0.35 gave the best fit to measured data; we thus can conclude that substantial stratification is present. It should be noted that similar models of equivalence ratio nonuniformities have been found necessary to match observed NO and CO emission characteristics in steady flow liquid fueled combustors.A similar analysis of the TCCS engine concept is not yet available. However, work in progress at M.I.T. shows that the combustion process occurs in two distinct phases. The spark plug, with its long duration discharge, apparently acts as a flame holder and a continuous ignition source. Fuel-air mixture burns in the wake of the plug at about the rate the mixture reaches the spark plug location in the developing fuel-air spray. This rapid combustion occurs while the mixture is fuel-rich (just how rich depends on engine load), and lasts for the duration of injection. It is followed by a longer phase where fuel-rich products mix with excess air and burn to completion and lean overall equivalence ratios. These combustion characteristics give the TCCS concept a multifuel capability since apparently the development of the fuel spray between injector and spark plug location is not much different for gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuels. The use of inlet air swirl and cup-in-piston geometry results in high velocities and turbulence intensities in the charge at the end of the compression stroke. These engine concepts are characterized, therefore, by a fast burn. Because of rich mixture conditions at the spark plug and the fast burn, they are tolerant to substantial charge dilution. For example, the PROCO concept can be operated with up to about 40% exhaust gas recycle (EGR). A substantial reduction in NO emissions can therefore be achieved in a practical engine with about 30% EGR. There is, however, a performance penalty. As EGR is increased so the duration of the combustion process is increased.and the specific fuel consumption increases. The HC emissions from these engine concepts are comparable to those of a conventional engine. This is at first surprising since the fuel is injected primarily into the bowl in the piston and should therefore be kept from the piston crown cylinder wall crevice, a major source of HC in the conventional engine. However, the larger surface to volume ratio of these concepts may make quench layer HC more important. Also the higher compression ratio, faster burn and lean overall mixture ratio all reduce the exhaust temperature and make after burning more difficult. To achieve greater HC control, throttling at light load and combustion retard have been used. With an oxidation catalyst in the exhaust system, further HC and CO reductions can he achieved. The CO emissions from these engines are generally low due to the lean overall fuel-air ratio. However, one consequence of stratification is that CO emissions from these engines are higher with stratified than with premixed operation at the same lean equivalence ratio. In these fuel-injected stratified charge engines, the effect of variations in engine design and operating parameters on emissions is exceedingly complex. In addition to the parameters which are important in conventional SI engines, the fuel injection schedule, and the fuel distribution within the combustion chamber are important additional variables. A better understanding of the basic processes involved would provide a valuable framework for data interpretation and would assist in optimum concept development. Currently these engine concepts offer good control of NO within the engine cylinder with attractive fuel economy, and can achieve engine HC and CO emission levels comparable to or better than current conventional SI engine levels.Open-chamber stratified charge Wankel engines have been developed and tested, where fuel was injected into the combustion chamber close to the spark plug location. However, much more development will be required before the potential of this stratified charge concept can be adequately evaluated.(Adapted from the paper entitled “Pollutant formation and control in spark-ignition engines”)Fig. 1. Schematics of two open chamber stratified charge engines: (a) Ford PROCO; (b) Texaco TCCS.Fig. 2. Exhaust NO concentrations for Ford PROCO stratified charge engine as function of overall fuel-air equivalence ratio for normal and for premixed engine operation.NOTES TO THE TEXT1. Research and development efforts over several decades have resulted in a number of stratified charge SI piston engine concepts which appear to have potential for reduced exhaust emissions. As the name implies, the fuel is not distributed uniformly throughout the charge.
