The concept of comparative advantage makes a strong case for free, unrestricted trade among nations. Meanwhile economists believe free trade will be mutually beneficial, yet, many barriers to trade exist today, namely, regulations and measures imposed by authorities that unduly impede trade in goods or services, in export or import. Loss of business opportunities is the most serious impact of a trade barrier, but even their minor effects may require extra time and trouble and cause additional expenses. For example, the United States restricts the number of cars that may be imported each year from other countries and imposes taxes on certain imported goods; Japan provides subsidies to some companies so they can sell their products at lower prices to other countries; a tax of 15% makes jewelry from Mexico more expensive than jewelry make in the United States.

Answer the questions on the text:1)What were the two major factors comprising Japan’s economic bubble in the1980’s?# speculative stock# property bubbles2)What were the methods Japanese government adopted to stimulate itseconomy, but turned out to be a failure?# budget deficits# flood of easy money3)What does “economic Godzilla” mean in the text?It means economic giant with enormous power. It is so quoted because it is a Japan cultural icon.4)What are the reasons that the U.S. would not follow Japan’s suit, accordingto some economists?# the greater responsiveness of the American political system# Americans’ greater tolerance for capitalism’s creative destruction5)What are the specified steps in the “deflationary trap”?Demand decreases→supply decreases→unemployment/reluctance in investing→less spending→less demand.6)What are the factors contributing to Japan’s even dimmer future?# the wo rld’s largest government debt (around 200% of GDP)# a shrinking population# rising rates of poverty and suicide7)Why do people today refer to the Japanese youth as “herbivore s”?Because: under the background of long-term economic stagnation, younger generation of Japan become pessimistic and fatalistic, and they lack ambitions that their parents once valued and become mildly tempered and behaved in both career and sex.8)What do you think of Japan’s real estate industry?During the period of deflation, property keeps losing its value, and people then refuse to buy new houses and house-owners are burdened with large sums of loan. They have to come up with different ways to cut expenses, which sabotages people’s expectations towards a better future.9)Why is Mr. Kaiami expecting inflation to come back again?Because the Japanese economy has been depressed and sluggish for so long. If inflation comes back he expects to see vibrancy of the Japanese economy again. 10)According to the article, how would you explain “destructive destruction”?On the contrary to creative destruction, which describes the chaotic changes that occur when a new product (i.e., technology) or service is introduced into the market, and entrepreneurs can make great profit by innovation, destructive destruction here means people’s pessimistic expectation renders them making their living by cutting expenses and selling current property rather than risking creating new fortune.2. The following should be taken into consideration in defining audience:a. What will make them support you?b. Is their attitude toward your proposal positive, neutral, or negative?c. How are they likely to perceive you?d. Are there hidden audiences you haven’t considered?3. There are 7 categories in any business communication situation: the source, audience, goal, context, message, media, and feedback.4. First of all, we should consider what message will achieve our goal with theaudience. We should then have an idea about how much information they need, what doubts they’re likely to have, how our proposal will benefit them and how to make our message convincing and memorable.5. We could convey our message to each audience by either speaking, writing, calling, sending E-mail, sending a memo, meeting, faxing, producing a videotape, or hold a press conference.6. We should seek our audience’s understanding at every stage of thecommunication and give them an opportunity to respond. Communication is not an act, but a process. Our message provokes a response, which requires another message from our audience. In this way we know what they think and can modify our message accordingly.II. 1. b 2. d 3. i 4. g 5. e 6. j 7. f 8. a 9. c 10. hUnit 7Who Are Y ou as a Communicator 作为沟通者的⾓⾊I. 1. Aristotle spoke directly in his book “Rhetoric”, three essential qualities ofsuccessful communication. They are: logos, pathos, and ethos.2. Pathos plays a major role in every interaction in a business setting. For example,we are more likely to help out a colleague we like; we work harder for a boss who we feel respects and counts on us and we’ll probably promote a competentfriend instead of a talented competitor whom we vaguely distrust.worthy of support and respect and whether their leaders are working for a larger purpose than their own short-term interest.4. Without an understanding of human nature which can come only from a broadbase of knowledge and experience, the manager will get nowhere no matter how well they have commanded communication theory or public relations tricks. This important point has been proved by current experience in teaching and practicing business communication.5. These interests not only give business people something to talk about at the nextoffice party, but they also help you grow as a whole person. The ability to engage in informed conversation about someone else’s interests can establish rapport and increases willingness to grant you credibility on your own turf.6. I think the author will discuss the qualities of effective communication in detailnext because he mentions in the end that “Good communicators are good listeners”, and as we all know to be a good listener is one of the qualities of an effective communicator.II. 1. h 2. a 3.e 4. b 5. i 6. c 7. g 8. d 9. 7 10. fUnit 8Business Internet商务互联⽹I. If we don’t understand cultural differences we won’t be able to succeed ininternational business and to be good citizens of the international community. Therefore we should not only learn to honor and respect our own cultures butalso to develop an appreciation, tolerance, and respect for others’ cultures.2. It is very important to create an environment of mutual understanding andrespect through our attitude and actions. Thus our blunders are usually met with understanding and forgiveness. To show some knowledge of local culture willalso help to establish a positive mood as negotiations begin.3. Status. For example people in the United States show respect by addressing topmanagers as “Mr. Billings”or “Mrs. Heinrichs”. However status is very important in China. In addressing businesspeople, the official title of each person should be used, such as Chairman, President, or Manager. If a Chinese thinks that he or she is not respected, most likely, negotiations will not be successful.Chinese “Y es”versus American “Y es”. For example, if an American business person wants to make an appointment with an associate, he/she will call the individual, and they will agree on a date and time for the meeting. If a conflict should arise and the person is unable to keep the appointment, then he/she will call and make other arrangements. All is understood when an American says “yes.”In the same situation, saying “yes.”doesn’t mean that a Chinese will meet at the agreed time and place. The Chinese is saying “yes.”, he/she likes and respects you and, therefore, wants to please you. If you understand this you will know that he/she may or may not be at the meeting. If he/she is not, youwill not be offended but will continue in your efforts to meet with him/her until you establish a time when he/she is free to do so. Then, you can conduct the business that is important to both of you.4. American desire for agreement on specific terms while Chinese tend to agreefirst on general principles. American is interested in short-term goals while Chinese in interested in long-term goals.5. Y es, there is. American lack patience and has a great interest in profits whileChinese make great efforts to establish an everlasting business relationship and focus on the future potential business dealings.II. 1.e 2.j 3.i 4.g 5.c 6.a 7.d 8.b 9.f 10.hUnit 14如何与来⾃不同⽂化背景的⼈谈判I. 1.
但问题更加紧迫(the question has a new urgency)。
去年早期,由于房地产市场(housing market)过热,中国官员仅命令银行削减房贷(cut back on housing loans),然后随着房屋销售量下降(fall),他们提供类似更低的房屋购置税(lower taxes on home purchases)。
Unit 1Why China WorksExercises1. Answer the questions on the text:1) How does the author view the Chinese economy? It is the most important bright spot in the world economy under the global recession, the only major economy that is likely to show significant growth this year, and the only one that routinely breaks every rule in the economic textbook. 2) According to the author, why can the Chinese economy perform so well?Because of:(1) the capacity for state control by the Chinese government.(2) its rejection of exotic financial innovations that are the melting core of the global credit crisis.(3) the integration of its economic policies between traditional market tools and state control measures.3) In what way does the author imply that western economists are erroneous in their bias toward “China’s market economic system”?The United States and Europe are moving toward state control by nationalizing their banking and car industries, and imposing heavy new regulation on the financial industry.4) What is the view of Stephen Roach on the Chinese economy system?Investment is the backbone of sustainable growth in the Chinese economy, which works more effectively than other market based systems in times of economic stress.5) Why can China work in the eye of the author? It has followed a radical pragmatism focusing on a slow but steady shift toward freer markets.6) What is regarded as the strategic thinking of the Chinese leaders in market reforms? They understand even under the serious financial crisis that it can stabilize the Chinese market and economy to introduce more sophisticated forms of securitization, including stock index funds, corporate bonds and other debt products. They also realize that, in the course of doing this, they should learn from the mistakes the westerners have made.7) What is the example given to illustrate the steadiness of the Chinese leaders in their policy execution? They continue to allow the value of yuan to rise despite of the American charges and the need for export competitiveness by their own enterprises.8) What is “shock therapy”?It is the economic policy adopted in Russia from 1991 to 1992 that totally deregulated prices and lead to a runaway inflation. It proved to be all shock and no therapy.9) In what ways does the Chinese economic system work efficiently? It can get things done quickly, move in a coherent manner, and marshal its people and resources to a common target: economic growth and prosperity.11) What are the Internet and public opinion used for?For putting pressure on local officials and influencing policy decisions.2. Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks. The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being “out of sight and out of mind.” He or she can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company’s plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superiors will have greater confidence in his or her ability to cope back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and English are becoming more and more prevalent .

And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communications equipment is greatly enhanced by foreign language skills.

”2.Even more farsighted is the new, landmark land-reform program, which would make it possible for Chinese peasants to rent or lease their land to outsiders. Simply figuring out who owns which properties can be a Byzantine task in China, so land reform could take decades--but the idea is already generating excitement. In November, real-estate consulting firm Jones Lang LaSalle estimated that land reform could unlock rural property worth as much as $2.5 trillion. Land reform will be China’s lasting legacy,”says JLL national research director Michael Klibaner. Turnning peasants into land-owning consumers could go a long way toward creating a consumer society, reducing China’s dependence on exports, and rebalancing the world economy.
