Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”“He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherw ise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance (坚忍不拔), by pushing on steadily.”Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.25. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week ago, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers(抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment buildingand unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车)pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 A.M. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.29. How did the writer feel when she was walking home after work?A. Cold and sickB. Fortunate and helpfulC. Satisfied and cheerfulD. Disappointed and helpless30. On her way home the writer _________.A. lost her wallet unknowinglyB. was stopped by a garbage truck driverC. was robbed of her wallet by an armed manD. found some homeless people following her31.In the fifth paragraph, why did the writer say she was dreaming?A. Someone offered to take her back home.B. A red-haired man came to see her.C. She heard someone call her nameD. Her wallet was found in a garbage truck.32. From the text, we can infer(推测) that the writer _________.A. would stop working at nightB. would stay on in San FranciscoC. would make friends with cleanersD. would give up her job at the bank.DAccording to most people, after a long period of studying or working, we need to have a rest to refresh ourselve s. However, that may not be the case. According to a recent report, you don’t need the break as much as you may think that makes you feel less tired.Scientists have long assumed that willpower(意志力)is a limited resource, which is why you feel theneed to h ave a rest, have a snack and come back a task when you’re feeling better. They argued that the only way to restore willpower was by rest, food or entertainment. But psychologists have challenged this theory, saying weak willpower is all in your head. They found that people’s beliefs in willpower determine how long and how well they’ll be able to work on a tough mental exercise. “If you think of willpower as something that is not easily used up, you can go on and on.” Said Prof. Veronika JobThe researchers designed four experiments to test students’ beliefs in willpower. After a tiring task, those, who believed or were led to believe that willpower is a limited resource, performed worse on standard concentration tests than those who thought of willpower as something they had more control over. They also found that leading up to final exam week, students who believed the limited resource theory ate junk food 24 percent more often than those who believed they had more control in resisting temptation(诱惑).Mr. Jo b said. “The theory that willpower is a limited resource is interesting. A belief in willpower as a non-limited resource makes people stronger in their ability to work through challenges.”The findings could help people who are battling temptation. Willpow er isn’t driven by a biologically based process as much as we used think. The belief in it is what influences your behavior.33. The underlined word “restore” in Paragraph 2 probably means______.A. to make something return to its previous situation or conditionB. to put things in a certain place.C. to give back to someone something that was lost or taken from themD. to repair an old building, piece of furniture, or painting and so on.34. Which of the following best helps the students to prepare better for their exams?A. Push themselves even if they want to take a break.B. Tell themselves that willpower is not limitedC. Don’t eat fast food while studying.D. Stay in a comfortable and quiet place.35. What’s the best title for the passage?A. Willpower doesn’t last long.B. How to build strong willpower.C. In fact, it's the world's 18th largest island. Most of the population, however, lives in the southern part of the country,in or around the capital city of Reykjavik. By its very name, you'd expect Iceland to be mostly ice. Looking at Iceland on a map, you'll notice it sits just outside the Arctic Circle. Despite this location and its name, Iceland actually has temperate climate—neither too hot or too cold, because it's warmed by the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream also helps keep Iceland's coastal ports ice-free through the winter. There is plenty of ice on Iceland, though. The country consists of a large plateau(高原)that includes fields of sand, mountains and glaciers(冰川).Over sixty percent of Iceland is tundra(苔原).About fourteen percent of Iceland is lakes and glaciers. Only about twenty- three percent of the country has plants or vegetation of any kind.Iceland was settled in the late 800s and early 900s by Norsemen from the Scandinavian country of Norway. Other settlers also came from Ireland and Scotland. From the thirteenth century up until 1918,Iceland was part of the Norwegian and later Danish monarchies. For most of that time, the small Icelandic population depended upon fishing and farming to make a living. For hundreds of years,Iceland was one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. After World War II,international aid and industrialization of the fishing industry turned Iceland into one of the wealthiest countries in the world. In 1914,Iceland became part of the European Economic Area .which allowed its economy to grow even more.Iceland is one of the youngest islands in the world. An Introduction to Iceland.DIt seems hard to watch someone yawn(打哈欠) and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force.Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a sign of pity and a form of social connection. Kids don’t de velop this deeply rooted behavior until around age four, the study found. Kids with autism (自闭症) are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect."Emotional infection seems to be a born thing that connects us together," said Molly Helt, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Connecticut. "Yawning may be part of that." Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did.“The fact that autistic kids don’t do it might mean they’re really missing out on that emotional connection with people around them,” she said. “The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand that humans have minds that are different from others,” s he added. “Autistic people never seem to understand that.”Like infectious (有感染力的)laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that promotes social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group.32. What does the new study suggest, according to the first two paragraphs?A. Yawning is a form of communication.B. It is easy to stop yawning when you see others yawn.C. Children follow others in yawning just after they are born.D. Yawning has some mysterious force which is related to God.33. According to Molly Helt, _________.A. humans differ from animals because they communicate with othersB. yawning is a kind of emotional connection among humansC. emotions are infectious, but yawning is notD. yawning helps clear ears on planes34. Which of the following is NOT true about yawning?A. It is natural to yawn back if people around you yawn.B. Some kids are too young to yawn after others.C. All he did after work was taking care of his family.I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in very hot weather. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days.Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing(秋千)for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend. One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Few hours later that day came a call. My father was in hospital. Immediately I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the chances I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and dreams. After his death I learned much more about him, and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time.
