Course description:
Ornamental plants and flowers is a general basic course which is set for non biology major students. The purpose of ornamental plants and flowers is broadening the students' horizons of knowledge and improving aesthetic appreciation of ornamental plants. By learning this course, students can increase their love to the environments and lives, improving their environmental awarenesses and forming right senses of culture literacy. Ornamental plants, also known as landscape plants, is used for beautifying and greening courtyards, streets, parks, resorts, sceneries, amusement parks, bonsais and public greenlands. Ornamental plants are the plants showing their color, shape and elegancy in order to improve the effects of landscapes, using the methods of cultivation arrangements, shapings, scientific managements. This course will introduce ornamental woody plants and ornamental herbaceous plants. Ornamental woody plants include ornamental flowering plants, ornamental fruit plants, ornamental foliage plants, ornamental shaping woody plants, pergolas and vertical greening plants. Ornamental herbaceous plants include lawn plants, ground cover plants, bedding plant, perennial plants, flowering bulb plants, herbaceous flowering plants and flower arrangement. Teaching of this course follows principles of scientificalness, universality and practicability.
Field Practice: It has four times field practice on this course in order to help students get in touch with ornamental plants and flowers on the field, getting to know their ornamental characteristics, cultivation features, cultivation arrangements, managements, ecological habits, reproductions and environment characteristics of wild-growing ornamental plants.
Scoring:
The score will be measure with both theoretical review (80%) and practical test (20%). For the theoretical review part, a short essay should be written, and practical test will be an outdoor test.
