He pauses for a minute and then starts to shove his hands into the flames. He screams in agony as his skin starts to burn but he ignores the pain and continues to shove his hands into the fire. Finally he is stopped by the entrance of the beautiful Princess Belle. She stares at him in shock and confusion.) Belle: Who are you and what are you doing?!Beast: I'm the Beast. I'm trying to free myself from this curse.Belle: Curse? What do you mean?Beast: A witch cursed me into this form and I can only be freed if I can find true love before the last petal of the rose falls.Belle: Well, why are you trying to free yourself by burning yourself in the fire?Beast: That's the only way I know how.Belle: Well, I'm sure there must be another way.Beast: No, this is the only way.Belle: No, I'm sure there must be another way.Beast: (Sighs) What other way could there possibly be?Belle: There must be something else you can do. He suddenly saw some lights and soon found hims elf outside a vast mansion."I did not know that this was here," said the merchant. "I must really be lost!"The merchant went into the house as the front door was open. He looked around, but there was nobody to be seen. He suddenly sniffed the air. He could smell delicious food.A table in the dining room was laid for one, so he sat an d ate a hearty supper.He suddenly remembered his horse, and went to stable i t for the night, but it had already been done, and the hor se was tucking into a bag of oats.'How strange,' thought the merchant, returning to the house. There, a bedroom had been prepared for him. He slep t well, and in the morning, found all his clothes had been cleaned, breakfast was ready and his horse was saddled.At the front door, he turned to thank his unseen host, but then he saw the garden. I was full of roses - roses o f every different colour."Now I can get Beauty's present," said the merchant, a nd he picked a red rose.The merchant nearly jumped out of his skin when he hea rd a furious roar."Have I not been a good host? roared the voice. "I fed you, gave you a bed for the night and stabled your horse, and you repay me by stealing from me."The owner of the voice then came into sight. The merch ant shuddered. It was the ugliest creature he had ever see n."I am very sorry, " said the merchant. "I picked it fo r my daughter.""If you wish to live, you must send the first living t hing you see when you arrive home, " said the Beast."Very well," said the merchant. He knew that his dog u sually greeted him first.He then set off for home. But to his dismay, it was Be auty who ran out of the house to greet him. The dog was ly ing asleep in the sun.The other girls came out to empty the saddle bags and to see their presents. He went quietly into the house. She had a beautiful room and lovely clothes, and he gave her a magic mirror so that she could se e her family whenever she wanted to.The Beast spent every afternoon with her, and graduall y she became used to his ugly face and looked forward to s eeing him.One afternoon the Beast said, "Beauty, do you love me? ""Love you?" repeated Beauty. She foun d him by a great bush of red roses.Beauty ran to him and sat down to cradle his ugly head in her arms. She was crying and telling him how sorry she was. He was wearing fine silk clothes and roared, “I gave you fo od and a bed to sleep in! And now, you are stealing my roses!” The merchant was frightened and told the Beast about Beauty’s gift. The Beast decided to let him go only if he promised to send Beauty to this castle. The merchant agreed and ran back home. He cried and told his daughters about the Beast. But Beauty loved her father a lot and agreed to go stay with the Beast.The Beast treated Beauty with a lot of kindness. He was never rude to her. He let her stay in the biggest room and let her roam in the beautiful garden. Beauty would sit near the fireplace and sew while the Beast kept her company. At first, Beauty was afraid of the Beast but slowly, she began to like him.One day, the Beast asked Beauty to marry him, but she refused. She was still afraid of his fearful-looking face. The Beast still treated her kindly and with a lot of love. Beauty missed her father a lot. The Beast gave her a magic mirror and said, “Look at the mirror and you can see your family. Now you won’t feel lonely anymore.One day, Beauty looked in the mirror and saw that father was very ill and dying. She went to the Beast and pleaded and cried, “Please let me go home! I only want to see my father before he dies!” But the Beast roared, “No! You promised you would never leave this cast le!” Saying this, he stormed out of the room. But after some time, he came to Beauty and said, “You may go to stay with your father for seven days. But you must promise to return after that.” Beauty was very happy and agreed. Then she left and went to stay with her father. Her father, on seeing Beauty, felt very happy and soon recovered. Beauty stayed with her family for seven days and more. She forgot the Beast and his castle. But one night, she had a terrible nightmare in which she saw the Beast was very ill and about to die. He was crying, “Beauty, please come back!”Beauty woke up and went back to the castle because she did not mean to hurt the Beast. She cried and said, “Please don’t die, Beast! I will live with you forever!” The Beast miraculously chan ged into a handsome prince. He said, “I was under a curse all these years and could only be relieved when someone fell in love with me. I am now cured of the curse because you truly love me.” And then, Beauty and the Beast weremarried and together they lived happily ever after.。
