as 在牛津高阶词典里是这么解释的:如图,as 包含 when 和 while 的意思,也就是说,它可以强调“时间点”,也可以强调“时间段”。

1. 两个动作(几乎)同时发生可以这样看,在某个“时间点”上,可以发生一个长动作、也可以发生一个短动作。

(注:为了方便理解,“延续性动词”可以通俗解释为“长动作”,而“短暂性动词”则是“短动作”。

)comb “梳头”,长动作,比如你可以对着镜子梳上10分钟。

I watched her as she combed her hair.她梳头的时候我一直看着她。

▲注意到了吗?在 as 这里,尽管是长动作,也可以用最朴素的「一般过去时」did,而不非得是「过去进行时」was/ were doing。

因为——as 强调:两个动作(几乎)同时发生,你一边梳我一边瞅,watched 和combed 是同时发生的。

再看短动作的例子↓open “张开、打开”,动作很短,比如张嘴,嘴有缝了就算开了。

试想,同一个呵欠谁能打上10分钟不闭嘴巴?所以 open 这类词长不了,我把它们叫做——短动作。

I thought of it just as you opened your mouth.你一张嘴我就知道你想说啥了。

▲ thought 和 opened 几乎是同时发生的动作,比如:你:“妈……”你妈:“没钱!”还没等你说第二个字,你妈就知道你是来要钱的了。

注:just 在这里用来加强语气。

2. 在某个时间段里正在发生的事情,相当于 when/ whileAs he was waiting for the woman, he became very impatient.在等那女的时候,他很不耐烦。

当然,这句也可以改成:When/ While he was waiting for the woman, he became very impatient.有些同学可能会焦虑起来:考试的时候,选项里如果同时出现 when/ while/ as,怎么办?别自己吓自己,考官还是很仁慈的,如果这3个同时出现,一般是第1种和第3种情况,都很方便你判断。
