as 在牛津高阶词典里是这么解释的：如图，as 包含 when 和 while 的意思，也就是说，它可以强调“时间点”，也可以强调“时间段”。

1. 两个动作（几乎）同时发生可以这样看，在某个“时间点”上，可以发生一个长动作、也可以发生一个短动作。

（注：为了方便理解，“延续性动词”可以通俗解释为“长动作”，而“短暂性动词”则是“短动作”。

）comb “梳头”，长动作，比如你可以对着镜子梳上10分钟。

I watched her as she combed her hair.她梳头的时候我一直看着她。

▲注意到了吗？在 as 这里，尽管是长动作，也可以用最朴素的「一般过去时」did，而不非得是「过去进行时」was/ were doing。

因为——as 强调：两个动作（几乎）同时发生，你一边梳我一边瞅，watched 和combed 是同时发生的。

再看短动作的例子↓open “张开、打开”，动作很短，比如张嘴，嘴有缝了就算开了。

试想，同一个呵欠谁能打上10分钟不闭嘴巴？所以 open 这类词长不了，我把它们叫做——短动作。

I thought of it just as you opened your mouth.你一张嘴我就知道你想说啥了。

▲ thought 和 opened 几乎是同时发生的动作，比如：你：“妈……”你妈：“没钱！”还没等你说第二个字，你妈就知道你是来要钱的了。

注：just 在这里用来加强语气。

2. 在某个时间段里正在发生的事情，相当于 when/ whileAs he was waiting for the woman, he became very impatient.在等那女的时候，他很不耐烦。

当然，这句也可以改成：When/ While he was waiting for the woman, he became very impatient.有些同学可能会焦虑起来：考试的时候，选项里如果同时出现 when/ while/ as，怎么办？别自己吓自己，考官还是很仁慈的，如果这3个同时出现，一般是第1种和第3种情况，都很方便你判断。
