唐立新:Good evening everybody!

Now comes the terrifying news that cats look up to their owners as role models and copy their behavior.Next time you reach for your fridge, think twice. If Kitty is watching, she is likely to overeat as well. What is your cat’s IQ?In a new study from the University of Messina, it turns out that indoor cats who live closely to their owners “mirror” the lives of their caregivers. They sleep at the same time, eat at the same time, and can even become more or less social depending on the behavior of their owners.“Cats are intelligent animals with a long memory,” Jane Brunt, the executive director of the Catalyst Council, told Discovery News. “They watch and learn from us, noting the patterns of our actions, as evidenced by knowing where their food is kept and what time to expect to be fed, how to open the cupboard door th at’s been improperly closed, and where their feeding and toileting areas are.” Because cats copy our habits, if you spend a lot of time raiding(搜刮) the fridge, your cat will return to its food bowl for that midnight snack, too. According to the study, this explains why “human and cat overweight rates often seem to match.” So, if you felt guilty about leaving your precious kitty at home while you go to work, now you can feel even worse: You are making your cat fat! There’s no word if drinking green tea and making sure you go to Yoga will benefit your cat, but based on the study, it sounds like sticking to a healthy eating and sleeping schedule is best for both of you. There’s a lot we can learn from our cats in return. “When they sit on our laps softly purring with rhythmic breathing and half-closed eyes, the sense of peace and calm that comes over us is like a private lesson in inner meditation.” Brant said. Sure. But cats don’t have to sit in rush hour traffic for an hour a day or worry about their in-laws. They’re probably pretty good at remaining calm. So, according to science, even though we assumed that cats were not close to us all these years, it turns out they are in fact learning from us and looking up to us. Scary, huh?31. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. Cats can copy humans’ schedule.B. Humans can learn from cats in some way.C. Cats are smart and have a long memoryD. Green tea and Yoga can benefit cats.32. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 5 refer to?A. Humans’ keeping searching the fridge.B. Cats’ going to their owners for food.C. Cats’copying humans’ habit of looking for food.D. Hum ans’ leaving cats home while working.33. What can we learn from our cats?A. To remain calm.B. To be able to copy.C. To stay proud.D. To look up to friends.34. What is the best title for the passage?A. Your Cat Can Bring You Pleasure.B. Are You Copying Your Cat?C. You Can Make Your Cat Social.D. Cat Is Copying Your Habit.BChristmas is long gone and Valentine’s Day is a distant memory. That me ans it’s a slow time for jewelers, and a good time for you to make a purchase. Whether you’re out shopping for gold, or silver, here are a few things you need to know:What determines price? The purity of the metal is one of the elements that determines the price. Gold purity is indicated with a stamp of 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K. And different countries have their own standards. For example, for a piece to be considered gold in the US, it must be at least 10K. In Britain and Canada: 9K. In Italy and France: l8K. Anything over l8K is really too soft for everyday wear. That’s why jewelry stores in the US sell mostly 14K.How much can you expect to pay? That depends on the weight of the metal and the gemstone(宝石). So keep that in mind, especially when buying online. To keep yourself from getting ripped off, ask yourself the following:● How long has the company been around?● What is its return policy?● Is the jewelry featured on the website visible from all directions?● Is the company transparent with the gram weights and the size of the gemstones?Yellow gold? White? Rose?Yes, it’s confusing, and while this is largely a personal decision, there are a few things to keep in mind. For starters, white or rose gold costs about 10% more than yellow gold. If you want the “look for less”, consider gold plated jewelry. “Gold plated” and “gold overlay” mean the same thing and guarantee a thicker layer of finish than “vermeil” which is a flash finish that is thinner and less consistent, but more affordable. Buy vermeil finished pieces you want for a season or two just to follow the fashion. For pieces you want to wear for a lifetime, solid gold is best. What about sterling silver(标准纯银)?Sterling silver has been an alternative for white gold during the difficult economy, and while it used to be more popular with just the younger these days it has much more mass appeal so much so that retailers are now offering fine gemstones with silver—something you used to see only with gold.Keep in mind that in the US the sterling silver standard is 92.5% real silver. Don’t buy it if there isn’t a“925” stamp on it. And keep in mind that th e lower price you’re pa ying for silver means more maintenance. To keep silver jewelry from becoming less shiny, consider keeping a piece of chalk in your jewelry box.35. According to the passage, the underlined phrase “getting ripped o ff” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_______”.A. being chargedB. being cheatedC. being affectedD. being attracted36. Which of the following is relatively good for only wearing a short time?A. A 14K necklace.B. A gold-plated ring.C. A vermeil ear ring.D. A gemstone necklace.37. We can infer from the last paragraph that silver jewelry should be kept ___________.A. in a dry placeB. in a cold placeC. in a wet placeD. in a hot place38. The author writes the passage mainly to ___________.A. encourage young people to buy fashionable jewelryB. tell people the best time to purchase gold and silverC. introduce the real value and popularity of gold and silverD. inform people of the factors to consider in buying jewelry四、任务型阅读How to Release CreativityAccording to most dictionaries creativity is the ability to create. However, creativity is more than what is defined by the dictionary. It is an idea, a process, a thought or a state of mind. One cannot learn to be creative because creativity is natural and unique to each individual. Peopleshould know that creativity doesn’t equal success. It equals the act of expressing. So if at first the goal that is aimed for is not achieved, there is no need for worry or frustration.Creativity can, however, be released by discovery. Some people need encouragement to help release their creativity. There are quite a few ways to release it.One way to release creativity would be to look for what can inspire you. Looking at the world and admiring the differences in people and places help. Creativity can be drawn from their beauty. A person can touch, taste, smell, hear, and see hundreds of different objects. Aromas from foods, textures of blankets, and sight of unusual objects can all give inspiration. Many people are too concerned with how things should look. The focus should be on how it actually looks in the raw, to the human eye. Colors and shapes can be distorted(扭曲) by the mere fact that people want others to see it for what it is. It’s more difficult for so meone to let go of all that and just let their creativity flow, unblocked.Another way to get the creativity flowing is to research what other artists have done or are currently doing. Their cultures and biographies alone can be an inspiration. Examining their works can help some appreciate artistic expression. New techniques can even be drawn from their works. Some people are even inspired by everyday events, like reading the newspaper or watching the news. Some can take other people’s situatio ns and describe how it makes them feel. That is a way to release creativity. Controversial issues, such as war or abortion, can inspire writings like poems. They can be used to express death, loss, or tragedy. General topics such as religion or politics can branch off into many directions, sending creativity into overdrive.Creativity is not about reaching a goal or being a perfectionist. It’s about being, feeling, and taking all that is inside and letting it out in one way or another. Creativity is not always expressed by paintings, drawings, or writings. One’s action is the main form to express creativity. Romance, for example, is a form of creativity. Love and emotion are inspired by one person for another. Taking something inside and then putting it back out into the world as another thing is the key of creativity. Knowing and loving someone so much that there is a need to express it is a very natural form of creativity.Another form of expressing creativity is talking. Some people are more blessed in this area than in more obvious ones such as painting or drawing. They paint a “word picture”. Speeches can be centered around new ideas and thoughts. It can contain all of o ne’s being and transform it into either simple or complicated words.Inspiration is vital to creativity. Even if it’s only a slight feeling or thought that inspires. Creativity can be released each time attempts are made to use the body as all outlet. Remember that creativity is not an art form, but that it forms art.

The best estimate now is that a college degree is worth about $300,000 in today’s dollars—nowhere near the million figure that is often quoted.“That million number has driven me crazy!” says Sandy Baum, a Skidmore economist who studied the value of a college degree for the College Board last year.Baum’s research showed that college graduates earn, on average, about $20,000 a year more than those who finished their educations at high school. Add that up over a 40-year working life and the total differential is about $800,000, she figures. But since much of that bonus is earned many years from now, taking away the impact of inflation means that $800,000 in future dollars is worth only about $450,000 in today’s dollars. Then, if you remove the cost of a college degree—about $30,000 in tuition and books for students who get no aid and attend public in-state universities—and the money a student could have earned at a job instead of attending school, the real net value in today’s dollars is somewhere in the $300,000 range, a number confirmed by other studies. But, especially these days, that still makes a college degree one of the most lucrative investments a person can make, Baum notes. Better yet, college graduates can go on to earn advanced degrees, which return even bigger payoffs. The average holder of a bachelor’s degree earns about $51,000 a year, Baum calculates. But those who’ve gone on to earn MBAs, law degrees, or other professional degrees earn about $100,000 a year.In addition, Baum found that there are plenty of other rewards for a degree. The quality of the jobs college graduates get is far better, for example. College graduates are more likely to get jobs with health insurance. And it is easier for them to find and hold jobs. The unemployment rate for college graduates was just 2.2 percent last year, half the unemployment level of those with only high school diplomas. There are lots of other nonmonetary benefits as well. College graduates are healthier, contribute more to their communities, and raise kids who are better prepared academically, studies show.Other researchers have found that the payoff of a degree is especially lucrative for students from low-income families, since the education and degrees give them a chance to break out of low-paying careers.31. What can be inferred from Para 1?A. The payoff of a college degree is still big enough to match the advertised.B. It’s more and more difficult to get a college degree.C. The return of a college degree is less than often quoted.D. A college degree is worth about one million dollars.32. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “lucrative” in Para.5?A. attractiveB. worthlessC. approachableD. balanced33. How can a college graduate increase his or her yearly income according to the passage?A. By getting jobs with health insurance immediately.B. By going on for higher degrees.C. By breaking out of low-paying jobs.D. By contributing more to his or her community.34. Which of the following statements can be learned from the passage?A. According to Baum’s research, high school graduates earn more than those who have collegedegrees.B. College education is enough to ensure you a good life.C. Nonmonetary benefits from the degree attract students more than monetary ones.D. Students from low-income families still think degrees are profitable to change their life.BDear Guys,I’d like to talk to you about the shame you subjected me to last night. Let me first refresh your memory: You, a group of fit, young men, were playing soccer on the field across from my apartment building. I, a better-than-average looking young woman, was walking along the sidewalk with my groceries. That’s when your ball came flying over the fence and landed in front of me.One of you approached and asked politely if I would throw the ball back to you. Fighting the urge to drop my bags and run screaming down the street, I reluctantly agreed. Before I continue, let me explain something that I didn’t have a chance to mention last night: I hate sports. This results from my lack of natural ability when it comes to throwing, catching and hitting. I’m bad at aiming too. So you can understand why I’d be nervous at what I’m sure seemed to you like a laughably simple request. However, wanting to appear agreeable, I put my bags down, picked up the ball and, eyes half-shut, threw it as hard as I could. It hit the middle of the fence and bounced back to me.Trying to act casually, I said something about being out of practice, then picked up the ball again. If you’ll remember, at your command, I agreed to try throwing underhand. While outwardly I was smiling, in my head, I was praying, Oh God, oh please oh please oh please. I threw the ball upward with all my strength, terrified by what happened next. The ball hit slightly higher up on the fence and bounced back to me.This is the point where I start to take issue with you. Wouldn’t it have been a better use ofyour time, and mine, if you had just walked around the fence and took the ball then? I was clearly struggling; my smiles were more and more forced. And yet, you all just stood there, motionless.Seeing that you weren’t going to let me out of the trouble, I became desperate. Memories of middle school softball came flooding back. I tried hard to throw the ball but it only went about eight feet, then I decided to pick it up and dash with ball in hand towards the baseline, while annoyed thirteen-year-old boys screamed at me that I was ruining their lives. Children are cruel.Being a big girl now, I pushed those memories aside and picked up the soccer ball for the third time. I forced a good-natured laugh while crying inside as you patiently shouted words of support over the fence at me.“Throw it granny-style!” one of you said. “Just back up a little and give it all you’ve got!”another offered. And, most embarrassing of all, “You can do it!” I know you thought you were being encouraging, but it only served to deepen the shame.Anyway, I accepted your ball-throwing advice, backed up, rocked back and forth a little, took a deep breath and let it fly.It hit the edge of the fence and bounced back to me.I surprised myself—and I’m sure you as well—by letting out a cry, “DAMN IT!!!”I then willed myself to have a heart attack and pass out in front of you just so I’d be put out of my misery.Alas, the heart attack didn’t happen, and you continued to look at me expectantly, like you were content to do this all night. I had become a sort of exhibition for you. I could feel your collective thoughts drifting through the chain-link: “Can she really not do it? But I mean, really?”Unfortunately for you, I wasn’t really game to continue your experiment. Three failed attempts at a simple task in front of a group of people in a two-minute period was just enough blow for me for one night. I picked up the ball one last time, approached the fence and grumbled, “Please just come get the damn ball.”And you did. And thanks to you, I decided at that very moment to never throw anything ever again, except disrespectful glances at people who play sports.Sincerely, Jen Cordery35. The writer agreed to throw the ball because __________.A. she needed to have a relax carrying the heavy groceriesB. she wanted to refresh her childhood memoriesC. she could not refuse the polite request from the young manD. she had fallen in love with the young man at first sight36. Which of the following is closet in meaning to the underlined word “game” in the last but one paragraph?A. anxiousB. braveC. afraidD. curious37. Why did the writer mention her middle school memory?A. To explain why she failed the attempts to throw the ball back.B. To complain that she had not mastered the ball throwing skills.C. To show how cruel those 13-year-old boys were.D. To express her dislike towards softball.38. What happened to the ball at last?A. The writer managed to throw the ball back.B. The boy got the ball back by himself.C. The writer threw the ball away out of anger.D. The boys got angry and left without the ball.39. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this open letter?A. To express her regret over what she did the day before.B. To announce that she would never play ball games again.C. To joke on her inability to throw the ball over the fence.D.

唐立新:Good evening everybody!
