Then one day, Sue saw Jim’s music collection. She noticed a rare punk rock CD that she also owned. At that moment, she realized that they both had the same interest in music and they started talking. Sue said, “I thought we had nothing in common (相同) until I saw his CD by the New York Dolls.” They are now married and living with each other. Some psychologists (心理学家) think that your taste in music is related to (有联系的) your personality. As part of a test at the University of Texas, Austin, USA, volunteers created a CD of their favourite songs. The volunteers then listened to each other’s CDs and made guesses about the CD creator’s personality—outgoing, adventurous, happy, and so on. These strangers correctly guessed much more about each others’ personalities through their CDs than through their clothesor taste in films. For example, Sue and Jim love punk music, which means they have outgoing personalities. The psychologists who did the test found Snoop Dogg (hip-hop) fans are likely to be energetic and talkative. People who like U2 (rock/pop music) are generally independent and adventurous. The psychologists also found that Louis Armstrong (jazz) fans tend to (倾向于) be serious and intelligent. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood powered or coal powered stoves. One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment (设备) powered by the sun. Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the “Sol 4”. “It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker.”The “Sol 4” works by reflecting (反射) light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct (把……对准) the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy. Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity. The cooker is also much “friendlier” than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it. And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Such individuals would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke. At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight. Each cooker costs about $2,000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem, Crosby Menzies has created a nongovernmental (非官方) organization called Solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations (捐款) to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.16.The writer starts the passage by ________.A.comparing facts B.sharing experiences C.listing numbers D.giving reasons 7.The underlined word “individuals” most probably means “________”.A.cookers B.people C.mirrors D.experts 18.Which of the following about the “Sol 4” is TRUE ?A.It is six to eight square meters of mirrors.B.It can work in any weather condition now.C.It can also heat the pan by lighting firewood.D.It is more environment-friendly than other cookers.19.From the passage, we can infer that ________.A.the “Sol 4” will be designed in a smaller sizeB.more Africans can use the solar cookers in the futureC.the “Sol 4” is the first product of the South African companyD.the African government will provide poor people with solar cookerD(2022·重庆开州·二模)◆Facial-recognition(人脸识别) cameras are everywhere, even in your smartphone. Many people use this technology to unlock their phones, open doors, or make quick payments. But during the pandemic(疫情), can it still work when people put on masks?◆The answer is no. Scientists are trying to solve this problem. For example, Engineering & Technology(E&T) magazine reports that Hanwang, a tech company in Beijing, has made a new system(系统). It can recognize 95 percent of people when they wear masks.◆What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes.◆Marios Savides from Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition. As we get older, he says, our faces change shape. But the area around our eyes doesn’t. It stays the same—even if we put on weight. As long as there are enough data(数据) from the area of our eyes, the cameras can recognize us.◆Tech 5 is another facial-recognition company. The Swiss company’s product scans(扫描) the shape of your face. It also scans your iris(虹膜), which is the colored part of your eyes. Tech 5 hopes to leave out(忽略) all of the face below the nose.◆This kind of software is more important than just unlocking your phone. “It can search for criminals(罪犯) and terrorists(恐怖分子) even when they wear masks,” said Huang-Lei from Hanwang. Hanwang’s technology is used by Chinese police in places like subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force.◆Huang pointed out one big weakness: it fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost,” Lei said to E&T.20.The writer leads to the topic(话题) by ________.A.giving an example B.telling stories C.listing numbers D.raising a problem 21.The new system can recognize 95 percent people by scanning ________.A.the face B.the eyes C.the nose D.the mouth22.We can infer that the new system ________.A.can recognize all people with masks in the futureB.can help the police to look for criminalsC.has brought plenty of money to Tech 5D.can recognize a person even when he loses some weight 23.The best structure of this passage is ________.A.B.C.D.

In exchange, some kids get allowances(补贴) or other rewards such as extra computer time. But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in__return. “Running any kind of household is a team effort, ” Susie said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and how they are going to keep it looking like what everyone wants it to be. ”Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards motivates kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed (兑取) either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. “Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards,” says Chris Bergman, the founder of ChoreMonster. “Kids need positive reinforcement (强化) to help motivate them. ”What do you think? Trying to Find a PartherOne of the most striking findings of a recent poll in the UK is that of the people inbterviewed, one in two believes that it is becoming more difficult to meet someone to start a family with. Why are many finding it increasingly difficult to start and sustain intimate relationships?Does modern life really make it harder to fall in love?Or are we making it harder for ourselves? It is certainly the case today that contemporary couples benefit in different ways from relationships.Women no longer rely upon partners for economic security or status.A man doesn't expect his spouse to be in sole charge of running his household and raising his children. But perhaps the knowledge that we can live perfectly well without a partnership means that it takes much more to persuade people to abandon their independence. In theory, finding a partner should be much simpler these days.Only a few generations ago, your choice of soulmate (心上人)was constrained by geography, social convention and family tradition.Although it was never explicit, many marriages were essentially arranged. Now those barriers have been broken down. You can approach a builder or a brain surgeon in any bar in any city on any given evening. When the world is your oyster (牡蛎),you surely have a better chance of finding a pearl. But it seems that the old conventions have been replaced by an even tighter constraint:the tyranny of choice. The expectations of partners are inflated to an unmanageable degree:good looks, impressive salary, kind to grandmother, and right socks. There is no room for error in the first impression. We think that a relationship can be perfect. If it isn't,it is disposable. We work to protect ourselves against future heartache and don't put in the hard emotional labor needed to build a strong relationship.Of course, this is complicated by realities. The cost of housing and child-rearing creates pressure to have a stable income and career before a life partnership.31.What does the recent poll show?A.It is getting more difficult for a woman to find her husband.B.It is getting increasingly difficult to start a familyl.C.It is getting more difficult for a man to find his wife.D.It is getting increasingly difficult to develop an intimate relationship with your spouse.32.Which of the following is NOT true about a contemporary married couple?A.The wife doesn't have to raise the children all by herself.B.The husband doesn't have to support the family all by himself.C.The wife is no longer the only person to manage the household.D.They will receive a large sum of money from the govemment.33.Which of the following was NOT a constraint on one's choice of soulmate in the old days?A.The health condition of his or her grandmother.B.The geographical environment.C.The social convention.D.The family tradition.34.Which of the following is NOT expected of a partner according to this passage?A.Good looks.B.An impressive career.C.A high salary.D.A fine sense of humor.35.The word"sustain"(paragraph 2)could be best replaced byA."reduce".B."shake".C."maintain".D."weaken". Milosevic's DeathFormer Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic was found dead last Saturday in his cell at the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The 64-year-old had been on trial there since February 2002.Born in provincial Pozarevac in 1941,he was the second son of a priest and a school teacher. Both of his parents died when he was still a young adult. The young Milosevic was"untypical",says Slavoljub Djukic, his unofficial biographer. He was"not interested in sports, avoided excursions(短途旅行)and used to come to school dressed in the old-fashioned way-white shirt and tie."One of his old friends said,he could"imagine him as a station-master or punctilious(一丝不苟的)civil servant."Indeed that is exactly what he might have become, had he not married Mira. She was widely believed to be his driving force. At university and beyond he did well.He worked for various firms and was a communist party member.By 1986 he was head of Serbia's Central Committee. But still he had not yet really been noticed. It was Kosovo that gave him his chance. An autonomous province of Serbia,Kosovo washome to an Albanian majority and a Serbian minority. In 1989,he was sent there to calm fears of Serbians who felt they were discriminated against. But instead he played the nationalist card and became their champion. In so doing,he changed into a ruthless (无情的)and determined man.At home with Mira he plotted the downfall of his political enemies.Conspiring(密谋)with the director of Serbian TV,he mounted a modern media campaign which aimed to get him the most power in the country. He was elected Serbian president in 1990.In 1997,he became president of Yugoslavia. The rest of the story is well-known:his nationalist card caused Yugoslavia's other ethnic groups to fight for their own rights, power and lands.Yugoslavia broke up when four of the six republics declared independence in 1991.War started and lasted for years and millions died. Then Western countries intervened.NATO bombed Y ugoslavia, and he eventually stepped down as state leader in 2000.Soon after this,Serbia's new government, led by Zoran Djindjic, arrested him and sent him to face justice at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in the Hague.36.Where did Milosevic die?A.In TV.39.Why was Milosevic sent to Kosovo in 1989?A.To handle economic issues.B.To drive the Albanians back to their own country.C.To remove the Serbians' fears of being discriminated against.D.To launch an attack against his political enemies.40.What happened in 1991?A.Yugoslavia broke up.B.Western countries intervened.C.NATO bombed Yugoslavia.osevic was arrested. The World CupThis summer's World Cup competition will see teams competing to play the world's best football. But the football they play will not all be of the same kind. The fans expect different styles of play from Brazil,Germany,or Italy. What makes Brazilian football Brazilian? Our style of playing football contrasts with the Europeans because of a combination of qualities of surprise, accuracy and good judgment. This style has won Brazil five world cups.Yet many Brazilian fans only count four of these victories. In 1994,the team abandoned this style for modern, scientific training and tactics. The team won the cup,but in a boring way.The ltalians think differently."To many ltalians, the score 0-0 has a glorious quality, suggesting perfection,"says the British football writer Simon Kuper. In the ltalian culture, the idea of face is very important. This is why ltalian teams are traditionally built around strong defences. The Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff once said that ltalian teams never exactly beat you. It's just that you often lose to them.In Holland, there is a tradition of decision making through argument and discussion. It is a society where everybody is expected to have a point of view."Every Dutch player wants to control the game,"says Arnold Muhren."You play football with your brains and not your feet.""A Dutch player argues,"says Simon Kuper."An English player obeys his superior. He is a soldier."The qualities valued in English football are military-strength,aggression and courage. This can make for exciting football. But it also means that the English find it difficult to use skillful players.David Beckham is usually criticized for his failure to defend-despite the fact that he is an attacker. If the English like to fight, the Germans like to win.In recent years,Germany has tried to change its image as a country of ruthless efficiency and a desire for victory at all costs. But Germans are quite happy for these qualities to remain in their national football team."Football is a simple game,"Gary Lineker once said."You kick a ball about for ninety minutes and in the end the Germans win."It's difficult to predict who will win this year's World Cup.There is no strong favorite. But a look at the track record of previous winners shows that it is the nations with the strongest national characteristics in the football that perform best.It seems that you need to know where you come from if you want to get to the top.41.Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of the Brazilian style of playing football?A.Accuracy.B.Surprise.C.Good judgment.D.Ruthless efficiency.42.Why do many lialians think that the score 0-0 has a glorious quality?A.Because it makes no one lose face.B.Because the ltalian team is not very strong.C.Because ltalians are nice people.D.Because that score is what their team could obtain.43.What is one expected to do in Holland?A.To play football.B.To express his or her opinion freely.C.To make a fuss about nothing.D.To beat his or her opponents ruthlessly.44.Which of the following is NOT true of the British football players?A.They are aggressive.B.They are courageous.C.They play football for friendship.D.They obey their superiors.45.Who will win this year's World A recent study by the Chinese University of Hong Kong has discovered another saying: An apple a day keeps old age away. The study involved fruit flies(g果蝇), as they share many genes(基因) with humans. Researchers gave one group of fruit flies normal food, and another group of fruit flies got the same food including apple. The results showed that flies that ate apple lived an average of 55 days longer than the flies that didn’t eat apple. The study also found that apple-eating flies were more able to walk, climb and move about as they became old, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports. The researchers believe that the antioxidants (抗氧化剂)found in apples are good for health. In another experiment, researchers studied the diets of thousands of women. They found that those women who often ate apples were 20 percent less likely to have heart disease.Scientists have recently discovered the apple’s genetic code(基因代码). This allows scientists to make new kinds of fruit that are healthier. Researchers are already using this information to grow apples with added antioxidants. Antioxidants help to keep eyes and joints (关节)healthy and protect against heart attacks and cancer.Apples that help people lose weight may be in supermarkets in just four or five years.

2010年海陵区初三英语总复习阅读理解(共20篇)(来自朱庄初中)(1)Last week, 169 Junior 1 students at No. 35 Middle School of Shenyang took their first no-teacher exam. After the teacher handed out the exam paper, he left the room and never came back. A student collected the papers when the exam ended.‘That test was not only a test of knowledge, but also a test of moral . We wanted to show students how important honesty is,’ said Cai Wenguo, the school's headmaster. The school says no cheating happened in the test. Next year, it wants 80%of its exams to be without teachers. But students have different ideas.‘I was happy and excited during the exam because my teachers trusted me,’ said Lang Yu Dan, a 13-year-old girl in Class 11. ‘Schools must trust students a lot not to use invigilators. But I think it is too early. Some students will cheat if there are no invigilators. And the students will not be able to ask for help when needed.’ said Hua Sha.‘I don't like having invigilators in exams. When they walk around the classroom, they make me nervous. I would get higher marks without them in the room because I would feel more relaxed,’ Liu Qing Xi said.‘I think it's very important to have invigilators in exams. Many students want to check their answers with each other after they have finished papers. And they can also keep the classroom in order when something unusual happens. They may make me nervous, but I still think we need them,’ Shang Guanyuan said. Not using invigilators may be a good idea. For example, give the clothes you do not use or the ones are too small to the poor. In a family, you may pass on such clothes to young brothers or sisters.Recycle Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled. By recycling we can save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat and melted. The metal can be used to make new coke cans.Recover When you buy a box of apples, then there will be a few rotten () ones. You have two choices: one is to throw all the apples away; the other is to throw the rotten ones and keep the good ones. In this way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.Repair If one of the legs of your table is broken, you should repair it. Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves. Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops(庄稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. 义务教育基础课程初中教学资料第一篇“Salty” Rice Plant Boosts HarvestsBritish scientists are breeding a new generation of rice plants that will be able to grow in soil containing salt water. Their work may enable abandoned farms to become productive once more.Tim Flowers and Tony Yeo, from Sussex University?s School of Biological Sciences, have spent several years researching how crops, such as rice, could be made to grow in water that has become salty. The pair have recently begun a three-year programme, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council,to establish which genes enable some plants to survive salty conditions. The aim is to breed this capability into crops, starting with rice.It is estimated that each year more than 10m hectares(公顷)of agricultural land are lost because salt gets into the soil and stunts(妨碍生长)plants. The problem is caused by several factors. In the tropics, mangroves(红树林)that create swamps(沼泽)and traditionally formedbarriers to sea water have been cut down. In the Mediterranean, a series of droughts have caused the water table to drop, allowing sea water to seep(渗透)in. in Latin America, irrigation often causes problems when water is evaporated(蒸发)by the heat, leaving salt deposits behind.Excess salt then enters the plants and prevents them functioning normally. Heavy concentrations of minerals in the plants stop them drawing up the water they need to survive. To overcome these problems,Flowers and Yeo decided to breed rice plants that take in very little slat and store what they do absorb in cells that do not affect the plants, growth. They have started to breed these characteristics into a new rice crop, but it will take about eight harvests before the resulting seeds are ready to be considered for commercial use.Once the characteristics for surviving salty soil are known,Flowers and Yeo will try to breed the appropriate genes into all manners of crops and plants. Land that has been abandoned to nature will then be able to bloom again, providing much needed food in the poorer countries of the world.31 Which of the following statements about Flowers and Yeo is true?A They are students at Sussex University.B They are rice breeders.C They are husband and wife.D They are colleagues at an institution of higher learning.32 Flowers and Yeo have started a programmeA to find ways to prevent water pollution.B to identify genes that promote growth in salty soil.C to breed rice plants that taste salty.D to find ways to remove excessive salt from soil.33 Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a cause of the problem discussed in the passage?A Natural barriers to sea water have been destroyed.B the water table has gone down after droughts.C Sea level has been continuously rising.D Evaporation of water leaves salt behind34 The word “affect” in Paragraph 6 could be best replaced byA “influence”B “effect”C “stop”D “present”35 The attitude of the author towards the research project isA positiveB negative.C suspiciousD indifferent. Ford?s Assembly LineWhen it comes to singling out those who have made a difference in all our lives, you cannotoverlook Henry Ford. A historian a century from now might well conclude that it was Ford whomost influenced all manufacturing, everywhere, even to this day,by introducing a new wayto make cars-one,strange to say, that originated in slaughterhouses(屠宰场)。

In many parts of the world, there are four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. In the U.S., there are only three: football, basketball and baseball. That's not completely true, but almost. In every season, Americans have a ball. If you want to know what season it is, just look at what people are playing. For many Americans, sports do not just occupy the sidelines. They take center court.Besides "the big three" sports, Americans play a variety of other sports. In warm weather, people enjoy water sports. Lovers of surfing, sailing and scuba diving flock to the ocean. Swimmers and water skiers also revel in the wet stuff. Fishermen try their luck in ponds, lakes and rivers. In winter sportsmen delight in freezing fun. From the first snowfall, skiers hit the slopes. Frozen ponds and ice rinks become playgrounds for skating and hockey. People play indoor sports whatever the weather. Racquetball, weightlifting and bowling are year-round activities. For many people in the U.S., sports are not just for fun. They're almost a religion. Thousands of sports fans buy expensive tickets to watch their favorite teams and athletes play in person. Other fans watch the games at home, glued to their TV sets. The most devoted sports buffs never miss a game. Many a wife becomes a "sports widow" during her husband's favorite season. America's devotion to athletics has created a new class of wealthy people: professional athletes. Sports stars often receive million-dollar salaries. Together they decoded(破译)a secret language and solved a difficult maths problem. The last challenge, however, stopped them. The key to the door was trapped in a block of ice.“We have to melt the ice,” Lucy said.“But there’s nothing hot here!” Maggie complained.Travis pulled off his sweatshirt and wrapped(裏)it around the ice. “This keeps me warm,” he reasoned.A few minutes passed by, but the ice didn’t melt.“Isn’t cloth an insulator(隔热材料)?” Lucy asked. She tried to remember what she had learned in science c lass. “Heat always flows from warm objects to cold ones. The heat in the air will eventually melt the ice, but we need to find something that will help heat move from the air to the ice more quickly.”“What about glass?” Maggie asked.“Glass is also an insulator. Another player paid too much attention to all their mistakes during the game. Other boys preferred to dig up the grass when they weren’t in the play. A lot of boys threw their baseball bats when they lost the catch. While their baseball skills improved over time with more practice, there were still problems with their all-important character. The team had a long way to go. For example, some boys were hard on those who made mistakes. 中考英语总复习之阅读篇——阅读技巧训练之语境猜词法说明1:在中考英语阅读中,我们主要从以下五点方法训练以提高学生阅读的效率:1.带题阅读法2.抓首、尾句法3.有意设问法(巧用五个W)4.词义猜测法5.找信息源法在本节课例里,主要训练的是学生猜词的能力。
在猜词方法上主要分为两种情况:1、孤立地根据构词法猜测词义。
2、在语境中根据上、下文猜测词义。
说明2:课例以Everyone has their own family 引出Words have their own family, too.
1:Match the meaning with the new words.1.rebuild A. 不安全的2.modernize B. 误解的3.man-made C. 重建4.unsafe D. 现代化5.misunderstanding E. 人造的说明3:事实上绝大多数单词不是孤立出现的。
1.Most of us agreed, however, Bill dissented.2.Why does jogging -- running slowly --become so popular?3.It's really cold outside, and my hands are both numb.
二、根据关联词猜词表示因果关系的:because,as,since, for,so,as a result,of course,表示同义关系的:and, or ,similarly, like, just as,also表示反义关系的:though, unlike, instead (of), rather than, on the other hand, still ,but, while, however , yet, even though, although等等。
例如:1.I could see nothing because the light was so faint .(faint:昏暗的)2.Tom is very rude, but his brother is quite polite.(polite:有礼貌的)3.She is beautiful, and her daughter is as pretty as her. (pretty:漂亮的)三、根据定义、释义、举例或复述猜词常用的:be,or,that is to say,in other words,be called,to be, refer to, be known as, mean或破折号或定语从句等来表示。
1.Jane is warm-hearted,she likes to help. (warm-hearted:热心的)2.Pork is the meat of pigs. (pork:猪肉)3. (homeless:无家可归的)5.You must stop dreaming and face reality.

The first program was a dance named “ The Light of Life.” To my surprise, all the dancers had lost one of their legs. As they are performing , I could see how they had have to face so many difficulties. However , they showed us many wonderful programs. From these programs, I could see how lively their minds were. The two persons who came out next shocked us all. The first one was a singer. He was very young, but unfortunately , he had lost both of his hands in a big fire. The song he brought us was “ Late Autumn ” and he sang it in such a low and sweet voice. Though it was warm spring, I felt a little cold when I he ard the song , as if it was really late autumn. “How much love and feeling is hidden in my heart? I wish to hold your hands again. ” hearing this, I couldn’t keep back my tears. The other one was also a young man . He lost both of his arms when he was six. From then on ,his feet became his “hands”. However ,he could manage a number of things with his feet. What moved us most was his feet-writing. The two words “Flying High” expressed his wishes.“If your wings are gone, your heart can still fly,” said Zhang Haidi, a disabled writer. In the world, there are many disabled people, yet most of them don’t give in. They have strong wishes and beautiful dreams. Just as Zhang Haidi said they could still fly.Disability doesn’t mean complete(彻底的)failure . Once you try hard, miracles will happen sooner or later. A Strange WriterB. Some Disabled peopleC. A Special PerformanceBI left home for New Zealand to start my new life on my 15th birthday. My father and mother took me to Hong Kong, where we had to say goodbye. When we were saying goodbye, I suddenly felt afraid that I had never had before. This was the first time I had traveled so far by myself. And going to a far-away place I have never been before made me feel terrible. I held back my tears until I could no longer see my parents. As I was wiping away my tears, I realized that, from that moment on, I would have to do everything by myself. After my arrival in Wellington, my teacher, Ms. Lang, showed me around my new school.A few days later, I started having classes. There were only 20 students in each class.Only maths, science, social studies and English were compulsory, and students could choose other subjects for themselves, I chose music, Japanese and health. In New Zealand, students are very active in class. And teachers are not as serious. They often let us play games in class. We can sit with anyone we like, and the teacher can sit at her own desk or at a student’s desk. The school had an easy manner, with few rules.Because there was no homework, we could join clubs or do anything we liked. I always went to the library after school, where I found a lot of books to help with my studies.Studying in New Zealand is very different from studying in China. In New Zealand, students depend on the library to gain knowledge instead of waiting for what teachers ask them to do.Time went fast. The two months after I arrived flew by. Then a week of exams began.I did not have to take these exams, because I had only been at the school for a short time. However, my maths teacher encouraged me to take the maths exam, as she thought I could do well.Though there wasn’t much pressure on me, I worked very hard to get ready for the exam because I know that no pain means no gain .When the day of the exam came, I found that I finished the paper faster than the other students. He helped the patriots in the American Revolution and became a head in the war against Britain. He was one of the first men to sign the Declaration of Independence. Yet he is remembered best for his large signature. The story is told that when Hancock sat down to sign the Declaration of Independence, he said that he would write his signature large enough for John Bull to read without his glasses. John Bull means England, as Uncle Sam means the United States. Hancock’s signature on the Declaration was written two times larger than those of the others so that you can read his name more easily than even the names of Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin.Today John Hancock is used t o mean any person’s signature. If you ask any American to put his “John Hancock” on a piece of paper, he quickly knows what you mean—you are asking him to sign his name.11.
