And she seemed at that moment to be sitting on the grass beside the mysteriously Black Sea, black as velvet, and rippling against the banks in silent, velvet waves. She saw the little group on the grass, their faces and hands white in the moonlight. Apart from them, with his supper in a cloth on his knees, sat the coachman. “Have a dill pickle,”said he, and although she was not certain what a dill pickle was, she saw the greenish glass jar with a red chili like a parrot’s beak.

Lesson 9
Against all odds
Introduction to the Text
This text is adapted from the biography of Stephen Hawking—Stephen Hawking: A life in Science, 2nd edition, written by Michael White and John Gribbin, published in 2019.
Stephen Hawking has worked on the basic laws which govern the universe. He showed that Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. These results indicated it was necessary to unify General Relativity with Quantum Theory. One consequence of such a unification that he discovered was that black holes should not be completely black, but should emit radiation and eventually evaporate and disappear. Another conjecture is that the universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary time. This would imply that the way the universe began was completely determined by the laws of science.

Why did the woman left the man?
the
woman: sensitive the man: egotistical; self-conscious; selfinvolved; self-engrossed; insensitive to others’ feelings
Question: How does a dill pickle taste? A dill pickle tastes sour, spicy, bitter and sweet. Any implications here? > It may symbolize the feeling of Vera, a mixture of flavors. Question: After you tasted dill pickles, would you enjoy them a lot? You wouldn't enjoy them very much, because they are not a luxury. They only serve as appetizer. You would not use them as a main course.
Lesson 9 – A Dill Pickle
Implication of the Title
From the woman's perspective:
Look at the implication of the title from various perspectives.
Here pickle refers to the whole encounter of the woman. Vera's life is very dull. So the meeting serves as an appetizer just as a stone is thrown into the motionless water and stirs up various desires to break the dull life of Vera. On the whole, a dill pickle appeals to you with attractive colors: greenish jar, red chili. But once you open the jar, one is enough and you won't finish the whole jar, which implies that the meeting will not bring Vera full satisfaction.

How I envy you. Ah, God!What had she done!
What a terrible thing for a man to believe. “How stupid he must think me!” said Billy.
Write a short essay of about 160-200 words on any of the following topics. 1. The changes Vera found her former lover when they met again six years later. 2. why Vera broke off with her lover six years ago and how she realized that it was impossible for them to pick up their romantic relationship when they met again.
Corsica French island in the Mediterranean, north of the island of Sardinia(撒丁岛).
Six years later, Vera saw him again, but he didn’t recognize her until she came towards him. She didn’t feel well with the old age, and he was still in the habit of interrupting her, the same case as six years ago. Together they recalled the first afternoon they spent together at Kew Garden, the man’s memory was filled with warm sunshine, while what Vera remembered was an absurd scene. The warmth in his words brought back her memory that they together in the lawn, he was deeply in love with her then. But now he looked far better than he had been. He talked a lot about his own experience in traveling around the world, especially the journey in Russia, while ignoring Vera’s obvious plight condition. In their talking about the men’s childhood story, Vera even remembered the details better than the man himself. The man’s insensitivity was best revealed when he referred to the letter written by Vera, he considered it funny to read it again. His trivializing the letter and thus their relationship hurt Vera a lot. But the man’s pleading her to say with him comforted her, hoping that their relationship would develop toward a better direction. However, the man’s claim that they’re both egoistical and self-engrossed hurt her deeply, finally she decided to leave him again.
Reading comprehension Questions on the text
Can you use your imagination on the basis of the clues provided in the text and reconstruct the story of Vera and the man? What do you know about Vera?
Do you think the text bears out the critic's opinions of Mansfield’s writings?
Don’t you feel well?
Aren’t you asking us to accept a pretty incredible coincidence? Isn’t that enough for you?
Kew Gardens
Famous botanical gardens located in a part of Richmond in Greater London, England.
The war Judging by the author’s life background, this can only refer to the First World War
His insensitivity contrasts with Vera’s strong sensitivity. Vera can imagine the man’s visiting in the Volga vividly as he describe, and she can even remember the details of the man’s boyhood story better than the man himself. The man’s insensitivity can be best seen in his recalling to the letter written by Vera six years ago, he stated that “I found that letter the only day, and I couldn't help laughing as I read.” His trivializing the letter as well as their relationship hurt Vera deeply inside.
An analysis of the text structure
Part One Paras.1-4: Recognition of the former lover 6 years after they departed.
Part Two Para. 5-21: The recall of their get-together in the past days.
In all, it is the man’s hardly understanding of Vera’s feeling and his overdue self-engrossment that made Vera determine to break off their relationship and leave him again finally.
What do you think was the nature of their relationship six years earlier?
Can you describe the setting in which they met again six years later?
Do you find Vera’s beautiful? Which one doห้องสมุดไป่ตู้you like best?
THE reason for Vera break off their relationship six years before and after was that the man was too self-engrossed and insensitive to show his concerns to others, what’s more, he even blamed this self-involvement on Vera’s part as well.
Part Three Para. 22-46: The men’s description of his traveling experience.
Part Four Para. 47-51: The memory of the men’s boyhood stories.
Part Six Para. 52-65 : The man’s indifference broke the heroine’s hope to renew their relationship and she made up her mind to leave the man finally.
The man is an egoist in that the he’s got the habit of interrupting other people’s words. The trick of interruption exasperates Vera a lot six years ago, and it was the same case until now. during the whole conversation, the man concentrated most on himself, talking a lot about his traveling experience around the world, totally ignoring the obvious fact that Vera was now living in a plight.
